Mac Pro :: Unable To Boot / Kernel Panic At Boot And Graphics Card Failure
Mar 9, 2008Yesterday my screen (30" Apple Cinema) started showing symptoms of graphics card failure, jagged lines across the screen. I rebooted my Mac Pro and it was gone. Then it happened again an hour later, this time the machine didn't boot, I get the Apple logo, and then it hangs up and the screen is shifted to left (I get apple logo on left side of the monitor instead of the middle) and jagged lines all over.
So the first thing I tested was using Target Disk Mode, it works. I can access my Mac Pro's internal HD's by TDM from my MacBook Pro. Then I tested single user mode, it does boot, I can't read what's written since the screen is shifted to left, but if I type (without seeing) reboot and hit enter, it reboots. So I assume the single user mode is working.
What else can I try to 100% make sure it's my graphics card that failed and everything else is ok with Mac Pro? I already ordered a graphics card replacement but I wouldn't like to be surprised if the Mac Pro still doesn't boot when the card arrives. It won't boot from Apple Startup DVD either. Same thing happens, gray logo then kernel panic with jagged lines all across the shifted screen.

Aug 3, 2006So I installed osx 10.4 server on a Power Mac G4 (white/blue)
Went throught the setup screens and did a complete reformat / install.
Just boots to the loader screen. (Where the mac face shows, followed by a question mark) and just cycles over and over.
I can put the DVD in at this point and restart the install.. I did go in and check the disk permissions and disk status and both passed.

Got ?folder on boot on late 2007 21"iMac today. Have tried usual stuff including resettng pram and booting from cd. 1st time I booted from install cd it wouldn't even mountthe HD. Turned off and left for a few hours to cool down. Next time ibooted from cd HD mounted and I ran disk utilty repair bit it said there were no problems. Tried to boot from HD no luck.
So, guessing HD is fried:-(
so, before I take it to the apple store to get it replaced (doubt under warranty) or do it myself I want to see if I can recover the mportant data. While I am sure it's all backed up on cradhplan I have 80gb of photos and I'd rather ecover from USB to ext HD instead of over Internet from cradhplan.
So, I'm thnking... When my TM blew up last year I took the HD out and took it to work and slapped it in a drive bay of my mac pro, recovered the data, put it back in the TM before shipping it back to apple for a replacement (that then went on eBay since I got cradhplan)
so; question 1: can I take the HD out of the iMac and have a go installing it in my mac pro? Will an iMac HD fit in the mac pro case/bay?
Question 2: all my photos are also on the apple tv. Can I copy them from the apple tv to another mac if my backup had failed and doesn't restore or I can't recover from iMac HD? I know I had cradhplan set to backup iphoto library but I upgraded to aperture 3 recently and am worried that I have nit set crashplan up to backup the aperture library
MacBook Pro :: FireWire Target Disk - Computer Won't Boot - Data Specialist?
Dec 13, 2010I have a friend who's oldish-Unibody MacBook Pro started giving him the folder with question mark-flashing symbol on boot-up. I guess it could be PRAM, but in any case, he wants to get his data off the hard drive. The computer wouldn't boot up from the install disk (holding 'c' on boot), all I have managed is to put it into Target Disk Mode, with my own MPB. The funny thing is, that it works, but all that mounts on my computer is the Install Disc (in his disk drive) and his hard drive shows up in my disk utility (see below), but it will not mount, and if I try to repair it, it gives me an error and DUPLICATES the original 'root' drive. Does this mean the hard drive itself is damaged and we need to go to a 'data specialist' to get everything off or is there anything else I could try?

Oct 1, 2008The standard HD that came with my Mac Pro was a 320GB which I thought would be big enough. I also added a 500GB in bay two for all of my work files. As I migrate all of my files onto the Mac now, I'm realizing that the 320GB is quickly running out of space with all the photos, music, etc. and my work files currently take up about 50GB so the 320Gb would have been better for that. Is there an easy way to swap my 320GB boot disk files with the 500GB data drive?

Jul 14, 2009In my attempt to install Windows XP via Boot Camp, I accidentally inserted an SP1 disc instead of the SP2 disc that I have. The installation proceeded to the point where it does for most who attempt this: the screen where you are prompted to press ENTER. I could not proceed and therefore restarted the iMac and held down the mouse button upon start-up to remove the CD.
HERE IS THE PROBLEM:I can not boot into OS X because the keyboard shortcuts (those that might allow me to select which partition to boot from and/or reset PRAM) seem to be disabled. Instead, a reboot always ends at a black screen with a blinking DOS-esque cursor, or the prompt: "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key."
I have attempted inserting my SP2 disc at this point, to no avail. My keyboard seems to be disabled, as if the SP1 install proceeded just enough to establish itself as the boot drive without drivers for the keyboard. I've tried using all 3 USB ports, disconnecting other USB devices. Oddly, my bluetooth mouse works to eject the CD on reboot...
OS X :: Unable To Right Click After Transferring Data From Usb?
Aug 5, 2009About 10 minutes ago I was transferring some files from a USB stick when my Macbook just stopped responding to the click-pad. I can't right/double-click on anything! The cursor works fine and I can move it around but if I hit the clickpad, nothing happens... I can't get into anything, change anything...
I don't know what to do. I tried using the trackpad to click instead but all that does is give me a lasso tool and still can't click anything but it selects icons on my desktop. It also just selects the top bar automatically but I can't click on anything in the menu.
I thought it was my hardware but I plugged in a mouse and still nothing! I can left-click with the mouse but not right-click. I've tried rebooting and nothing changed.
It's like my right-click is constantly pressed down. But it's not physically.
Also, when I leave it alone it tries to go into the screensaver but constantly comes back out again, so it results in flashing between Flurry and my desktop.

Nov 5, 2010I was partitioning an external storage drive with iPartition and ipartition stopped and said it couldn't complete its task and now I am stuck with a drive I cannot access, or rather I cannot access the data that is on it. Drive is greyed out in disk utility. It was not written over however, which I am hoping is a good thing.I have little to no experience with data recovery so some advice on what app to use would be swell.

My question is, is there a way to basically transfer all of my files/programs/etc. to the new Mac without having to reinstall everything? The iMac will become my primary computer, and the MBP will become kind of a sitting on the couch/travel computer. This is the first time I will be upgrading Macs, as the MBP was my first non-PC computer.
The MBP is running Snow Leopard already.

OS X :: External HD Failure / Unable To Complete Data Recovery
Aug 31, 2009So i have been searching the Internet and forums to find someone with the same issue as myself. there are many that are close to it. though nothing that has helped me in this situation. so here i go posting a thread. My USB self powered HD was plugged in with data being accessed (Movie) when the cord got knocked out and unplugged the HD. This has happened before, though not when i was accessing the HD... usually this is fine.
Any way, i herd the HD struggle three time as if the needle jumped from the physical disk, it kinda sounded like it died. though when i plug it in now it sounds fine, the disk spins and receives power.
although the disk no longer mounts. though when i look it up under the Disk Utility it sees the drive and the fancy name i gave it (though it cant mount the drive) when I run verify and repair it gives me this message which is probably pretty standard:

I'm wondering is there any way to setup time machine to backup my data on network hard drive running Windows XP. I use my macbook with my windows desktop PC for internet and sharing file. It would be great if time machine can backup data on my windows desktop network hard drive.
OS X :: Unable To Backup Data Via Time Machine / Volume Cannot Be Mounted
Jan 1, 2009I've spent a good deal of time over three days trying to do something that I think is both doable and shouldn't be all that hard. I have a 750gb external HD attached to a Mini, and I'd like to use that drive to do TM backups for the Mini, as well as three MacBooks.
But I can't seem to get access to the backup drive from the laptops to either get going in the first place, or to remain available for TM. I get "volume can't be mounted" errors, "image can't be mounted errors", etc. I find that I can't ever eject the backup drive from the Mini (always told an application is using it...even if I've just booted up the Mini). And with one of the MacBooks, even a direct FW connection to the drive doesn't result in the drive showing up in Finder.
Isn't this a pretty straightforward thing to do? Is there a step by step somewhere that might help me figure out what I'm doing wrong, or what I need to fix? Should I reformat the drive again and start over (there are no important backups on it yet)? By the way, the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

Aug 22, 2014I have noticed that several of my browsers (Chome v36, Firefox, Opera) are unable to display web pages. Safari sometimes shows pages, but mostly displays them as blank. On the other hand, Chrome Canary and Epic browser seem to display web pages without a problem. I have attached screenshots of what some of these error messages say.

Hardware :: Unable To Mount Hard Drive In OSX / Data Recovery Software?
Aug 5, 2010Recently, I was hired by a client to recover the data on a new macbook pro. They said one day the computer just wouldn't start, so they brought it to the Apple store, where they switched out the hard drive. They got to keep the old drive, which I attempted to recover using VirtualLab and R-Studio data recovery programs and a USB hard drive case. Both programs did the same thing: they scanned, and kept finding errors and never even got through 1% of the disk! R-Studio even scanned for almost 24 hours and nothing came up from the partition we needed to recover! Disk utility was the first thing I tried, and it appeared to have scanned the entire drive (this was about 3 weeks prior to trying the other programs)and found a lot of errors, but was not able to recover or repair the drive.
Also, the hard drive kept making a pulsating, repeating sound while it was being scanned that sounded like it was trying to read the disk, almost a scraping sound but not quite. The drive did spin up and was recognized by the recovery programs, but it did not mount in OS X.
I was just wondering if anyone here has had a similar problem, or knows of a better program and/or a good, trustworthy advanced data recovery service she can hire to recover her important data.
Hardware :: Unable To Mount Hard Drives / Cannot Recover Lost Data
Jan 6, 2010I have a dead La Cie Big disk terabyte external drive. It won't mount and it isn't recoverable the way it is. So I looked inside, it's 2 x 500 gig Seagate drives. So, I took the 2 drives out and installed one of them in a Mac Pro to see if it would mount on it's own. I figured probably not, since there were two drives mounted in this La Cie external case, they must have been RAID-ed together. I don't really know much about RAID, obviously.
Disk utility saw the disk, but it wouldn't mount and gave the unreadable message. Tried to disk utility it, and it gave file system errors, not surprised. It looks like you can't separate them, the RAID must split the files onto the two disks.
Is there any point to trying the utility Data Recovery on it? Or should I just tell my boss the only way to get the data back is to send it out to a data recovery place? I don't want to try and reformat them if there is still any possible way to get the data off them. I think the drives are fine and would work as a terabyte drive in the Fantom case if reformatted, but then we lose all these important projects.We seem to have the worst luck with external hard drives.
The odd thing is that I have another dead terabyte drive, a Fantom drive in which one of the 500 gig drives started clicking. I took both 500 gig WD drives out of the Fantom case and installed the two Seagate 500s from the dead La Cie case. It shows up in Disk Utility as an unformatted 1T drive. I was hoping it might just reconstitute itself in another case, but no go. If worse comes to worse, I will reformat it and it will probably be useable.

Sep 24, 2009I have a student who put most of her project work for the past few semesters on an Western Digital hard drive which was in a I/O Magic shell. It was dropped and immediately started a grinding noise. She took it to the local mac guru who has been unable to recover any of the data. My gut tells me it's a goner but I wanted to run it by the gurus here to see if they might recommend anything that we might try before giving up.

Apr 9, 2010Once I turn on the guest network in the Airport Utility, the network is unavailable and I can't connect to the Time Machine with the Airport Utility. I have to reset the device and keep it disabled. As long as the guest network is disabled, everything works fine. The Time Machine is fully updated and working fine otherwise. Any ideas?

I have PhotoRec but can't seem to navigate to my NTFS external to save the data (the only drive big enough to save the data too is my girlfriend's 500GB external and it is NTFS).
Any tips to getting photorec to navigate to the drive (I am pulling from one external to another). Photorec sees the one I want to save too I just can't get it to select it. Also if there are any other programs yall recommend, I will give them a shot.
OS X :: Unable To Boot From SL DVD
Oct 20, 2009I'm having an odd problem that I can't figure out. I have a fairly new iMac (the aluminum one). It originally had Tiger on it, then Leopard came out 1 week later. I upgraded to Leopard once it came out. I then purchased the Snow Leopard upgrade, and upgraded my iMac to SL.
I've been running SL great on it for several weeks now (since SL was released). I haven't had any issues, except with Time Machine. I wanted to do a verify/repair disk on the HD, so I attempted to boot my iMac from DVD.
It did not boot automatically to DVD, so I attempted a "C" during startup to boot from my DVD. After about 5-10 mins of waiting, it dropped me into "Safe Boot". I can not seem to boot it from the DVD.
I rebooted my iMac, and double clicked the install icon from the DVD. It's giving me the following error:
"Mac OS X 10.6 cannot be installed on this machine"
It's claiming that I need v10.5 or higher to install. I'm currently at 10.6.1, so I'm not sure what it's complaining about.
Has anyone had or seen this issue before? All I'm trying to do, is perform a repair disk on my HD...but I can't even boot from my DVD anymore.

OS X :: Unable To Boot From Disk
Sep 23, 2010So I have been running into a bunch of weird issues lately (got errors on emptying the trash, FCP is acting all crashy, couldn't unmount an internal disk to format it, etc) so I wanted to run the hardware test that is on the installer disk that came with my MP. Problem is, the machine won't boot from the disk. If I boot holding down the D key it boots to a grey screen and a dialog box pops up for a second and then *poof* the computer shuts down. It happens so quick there is literally no chance to read what it says. If I boot holding down option and try to click the install disk I immediately hang, the mouse doesn't respond anymore and I'm screwed and need to hard restart.
So I figured "hey I got a backup, I'll just reinstall OS X". Nope, still won't boot using the "install Mac OS X" from the disk. I click restart and I just get a grey screen again and nothing happens. I hear the drive spin up and then spin down and silence. Everything is disconnected from the computer except for my screen my keyboard and mouse.
Everything is up to date. Zapped pram, repaired permission and ran cron scripts via Onyx so I am at a loss what to do now. This is troubling because even if I have a problem I have no way of reinstalling the OS. I can work because the computer is working almost normally but this worries me.
This is a new MP 2.8.
Everything has been working tip top until this morning.
EDIT - I bought SL for my MBP so I have the retail disk. I was able to boot from that but it doesn't have the hardware test so it still looks like I am SOL for now.
