I purchased an ibook g4 8 months ago from a school. It works great but I can't make any updates because old passwords are currently on the comp. How do i reset the passwords without losing any of my info. that I have on my comp? Do I have to set up a new username?
The software update on my mac OSX 10.4.11 says I'm up to date - but I need Leopard 10.5 to download stuff for my amazon kindle via computer. Is there a way to get this Leopard on to my computer? in v. simple language? - am computer idiot....
Hopefully someone here has an idea what's going on with this machine. I haven't had much trouble with the Macs I've owned, so I don't have a lot of experience with troubleshooting.
I got on my friend's iBook yesterday and noticed she hadn't installed any updates in a while. This is a 500 Mhz G3 iBook running OS X 10.4. So I went through all of the udates and installed everything, and today none of the Apple branded applications will open. iChat, Safari, etc. will bounce a few times on the dock when you click on them, but they won't open. I tried running disk utility but when it opens it says a background process that needs to be running did not start properly and then it crashes and I have to force Disk Utility to quit. My friend doesn't have the original Tiger disks, as the person she bought the computer from just installed Tiger on the computer and kept the disks (I know, I would have advised her against a sale like this if I had known about it).
But anyway, the computer has worked just fine until this last update. Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be or how we might go about fixing it without Disk Utilit?
i recently updated itunes ver8.. after completion, i was prompted to restart ibook.. from then... all i got was the progressing circle going on and on and on..
i do hear my chime then the apple screen with the progressing circle.. then it goes to a blue screen that is forever..
i tried to power off n on again, and its the same..
anyone experienced it?
i cant find my utility start up disk. can download from somewhere?
i got it checked at my local apple store, they told me its a software bug?? they dont have any ibook support to help me further. they told me that the hardware itself is ok.. if i cant do it myself, then i hv to send it in for an exorbitant charge..
I have an iBook (running OS X Tiger) which is wirelessly connected to a home network via a wireless router. On this network I have a Windows PC to which a HP Laserjet 1010 is connected via USB. I would like to be able to share this printer on the Windows PC so that I can print from the iBook.I have set file and print sharing options on the Windows PC. I have then added a new printer in OS X over 'Windows Printing'. OS X sees the printer and allows me to add it after puting in a username and password (I used the 'Guest' username). However when I try and print from the iBook the printer initialises and then procedes to print "%!PS-Adobe-3.0 %RBINumCopies: 1 %%..." and then lots of random letters. I thought that this looked like the iBook wasn't using the right drivers and after checking it appears it is using Generic Printer drivers.
I have a G3 iBook and just the other day the display stopped working. There were no signs of the display going bad, it's just went. Am I able to boot the iBook via Target Disk Mode on my PowerBook and run the iBook Hardware Test CD on it? Also, can I reboot my PowerBook and choose the iBook as the startup volume?
I know how to do Target Disk Mode but the latter I'm not sure about.
My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.
Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^
Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.
Right now I have a G3 iBook (900 MHz, 640 MB RAM, Combodrive, 40 GB HDD). I'm looking at a G4 iBook (1.2 GHz, 768 MB RAM, Superdrive, 60 GB HDD).
How much faster would the G4 be over my G3. I figure that after selling my G3, the G4 would only be another $200ish on top of it. Would this be worth it?
I just bought a parts ibook from ebay, but I managed to fix it, except there was no hard drive. I currently have a 6 GB HD in it with OS X.3.9 on it, but I want tiger. I have the tiger family pack, so I have a license for it. It only has a CD-ROM drive, so I am wondering if I can buy a 40 GB HD, and clone the one from my G4 onto it.
SPECS ibook G3- 500 MHZ 192 MB RAM CD-ROM currently has 6 GB HD ibook G4- 1064 MHZ 1.25 GB RAM Combo drive 40 GB HD
So, I'll spare you guys the details, haha, but I am stuck trying to decide between getting an iMac Intel or a MacBook Pro for my home use computer. What would be the advantages of one over the other? I just really love the fact that a MacBook Pro would be portable yet powerful. And yes, I have this iBook for portability to school and such, but if I want to do extensive work on the couch, I could bring a MBP vs. an iMac. What do you all think? Are too laptops redundant?
Yesterday Apple released Safari 5.0.1 and Magic Trackpad and Multi-Touch Trackpad Update 1.0, but Software Update on my Mac makes me able to download only the first one (Safari 5.0.1) - which I did. Why can't it find the Multi-Touch Trackpad Update?
- My MacBook is fine (it's 13-inch, Mid 2009).
- My OS is fine (Mac OS X v10.6.4).
Sure, I can download it manually, BUT it makes me really annoyed if something on my Mac works not as good as it should.
I have problems since applying the latest security Update 2009-001 and Java 10.5 Update 3, I have 10.5.6 on the new unibody 2.4ghz and have completely lost the ability to connect to my wireless access point which is an apple airport extreme base station.
I can sometimes se the base station but cannot connect to it and sometimes cannot see it at all. I have three other apple computers at home all less then a year old running the same build of 10.5.6 but have not updated them and they all are fine.
This one was perfect untill I applied the update.
The machine I am having problems with is partitioned with windows 7 beta on it which has no problems connecting to the base station, which indicates that its not a hardware problem but more then likely the update which is causing the problem.
Is there a way to uninstall the last update or delete it? Any one with a similar problem or know how I can fix it, I have googled but cannot seem to find anyone with similar problems.
I was wondering whether to update the nvidia drivers from time to time, is this done through and included in the normal 'software update' from the top-left apple menu bar or do I have to go to the nvidia site and manually update each time?
I updated with the latest Lion patch yesterday and since then Entourage has either hung or taken a very long time to update from our 2003 Exchange server (I have MS Office 2011 but as you're probably aware, there are issues integrating with a 2003 Exchange server). how this might be fixed, short of updating both our 2003 Windows Server to Windows Server 2008 x64 and Exchange to 2010 so I (the only Mac user out of 85 staff) can use Outlook 2011?
If I create a smart playlist in itunes and deselect live updating then how exactly does the smart playlist load up?
The reason I ask is that started setting up Smart Playlists for all of the artists on my computer and they're all set to live update which is consequently slowing down my itunes. I realize that I may not necessarily need that. My question is though...how exactly would I go about manually updating a smart playlist that has live updating turned off?
Started the 10.7.4 install, and it halted. Turned my Mac off, started it back up, and apparently the 10.7.4 update didn't install, but it has caused the Mail function to not work AT ALL - I get a long error report that is auto sent to Apple.Â
I downloaded Lion from the Apple store, but have my Snow Leopard disk. How do I go about re-installing Mail?Â
Info: Mac Book Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.5), 2.93 GHz Core 2 Duo 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

A Brother printer update has just appeared in my Software Update, to my surprise.
I actually thought Apple had stopped offering Software Update to third parties, as the only other one I can think of is the Stuffit update that appeared several years ago on fresh installs of OS X (not sure if it still does).
If you have an ALUMINUM MacBook and you updated to 10.5.6 with Software Update (NOT the Combo Update), then please post the build number here. The more replies, the better. Also, please specify if you have 2.0 or 2.4.
