I am very new to Macs. Recently I was given the job of trying to fix a G4 for the town's public access committee. I ended up buying a used G4 and swapping out the HD and cards. All was well but no one could remember the old password, so nothing could be updated.
So I used: "/sbin/mount -uaw" "rm /var/db/.applesetupdone" "reboot" and setup a new account from which I could change the original account's password; then chose the original account to be the default boot.
In the original account I was able to update all the software, (except a 168 MB combined update for OS 10.4) and decided to delete the new account just to get things back to how they were before.
Mistake. The new account must have been made the root account, because now the system hangs at the Mac OS X screen and the progress bar never gets any blue.
The above commands in terminal don't go beyond "...applesetupdone", which receives a "no such file or directory" response.
Ironically I erased my kids' favorite iTunes movie (Cars 2) while in the process of trying to back it up off of our Apple TV and laptop onto an external drive. Is there any way to recover it without having to purchase it again? Is it on the iCloud? Does Apple keep a record of our purchases and will the restore the file?

View 24 Replies View RelatedI am a bit desperate because I accidentally deleted all my phone contacts using iSync. Previous to the sync I had my contacts in my mac address book, but I deleted them to make a fresh list from my phone. Therefore my address book was empty when I did the sync. I thought that the contacts from the phone would be copied to the computer. But instead, when I did the sync all the contacts from the phone were deleted! I did a search in google and found that the version of Address Book under Tiger kept a file called ddressBook.data.previous that contained your contacts before the last change. But I cannot find that file in Leopard. Does anyone have an idea of where that file is? Or does anyone have a suggestion about how to recover my phone numbers?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI was trying to add my home folder to my dock from dragging it from the finder sidebar to the dock, but it wasnt draggable. It did drag, but it wouldnt stay in the dock, when I let go of the drag, it vanished in a puff of smoke. How do I get it back in the sidebar, it was pretty helpful over there. Just to be clear I'm talking about when I open a new finder window, I see a few folders under 'Places' --> Desktop, Applications, Documents and My name which is the home folder. Now all I see is Desktop, Applications, and documents. How do I get it back if possible, and when I do how do I put it on the dock? Next to apps and downloads folder? Nevermind I found out how to add it. CMD+, for finder prefs, and then sidebar. I still have no idea how to put the home folder on the dock now.
