Snow Leopard :: UNIX Console Login

I have 3 machines running on 10.6.2, they all behave the same way. When I logon to the machines via the desktop and finder and open X11, the UNIX command 'open' behaves normally. I can open finder by typing' open.' and I can open all applications by using the open and unix path commands.

However, if I restart the machine and log on as Username: ">console" and go directly to Darwin, and then log in with my username and password from the full screen Console window, I get the infamous -10810 error when I try to open any apps or launch any urls.

Any idea is this is a permissions issue or Snow Leopard? I have two different MacBook Pro's and an iMac that all behave identically.

OS X Leopard :: Console.app Hogs CPU While Looking At Console Log?
I would like to revive thirtynine's unresolved query on this topic [URL], as I am having the exact same problem:

" Console 31127: Error: failed to register for new message notifications (status code = 1000000)

Of course, the process number 31127 is not always the same. After this message appears, the app uses 60 to 70% of CPU time. Switching to another log, say system.log, CPU usage goes back down to % or less. "

I notice that only get this problem if I log in under my normal username. If I log in as another user (I set up an non-admin account for comparison purposes, this problem doesn't present itself.

I have also figured out that it the error messages are generated by 'notify.h' [URL], but as to the cause, I am as much in the dark as thirtynine and BlacknTan (who also reported having the same issue).

Snow Leopard :: How To Read Unix Executable File
In clean up my older folders I've found several files that don't have any of the usual icons, but rather a Terminal file icon and the Get Info shows that they are "Unix Executable Files." I opened them using Text Edit and found that some have the type/creator code of WDBN MSWD and others are PICT SPNT, or DRWG MD.

Snow Leopard :: Files Converted To Unix Executable Format
I recently downloaded some old files that I'd saved to my iMac and many of them were converted to a 'Unix Executable File'. All of them were either Pagemaker, Quark, or Illustrator files from about 1991 thru 1994. I've searched, but haven't been able to find an answer that I could understand. I'm an graphic designer and my technical knowledge is limited. Might there be a program out there that can restore these files so that Adobe InDesign, or Illustrator can open them? Using 'Open With' doesn't work. I can see the text in them using TextEdit, but of course there is no formatting whatsoever.

MacBook :: Starting - Freezes At Login And Goes To Darwin Console
The weirdest thing has happened to my MacBook. It was running a little slow today so I restarted it thinking it would help clear out the memory and whatnot. When I restarted it, everything seemed normal. It makes the classic "mac soud" and shows the apple with the circular loading wheel. It then goes to the login screen, just as it normally does. However, once it goes to the login screen, the spinning beachball comes up and it freezes temporarily. This is when it starts to get bad. The screen then goes black and comes up with white letters saying: Darwin/BSD (my name's Computer.) (console) login: sometimes, I have time to type in my username and password, sometimes not. Either way, the following comes up: disk0s2: 0xe0030005 (UNDEFINED)

it then goes back to the login screen, which completly freezes every time. I am completly frustrated and terrified that I will not be able to access my data, which includes over 2 years of music, pictures etc. that have not been backed up. Does anyone know what is going on with my MacBook?

Snow Leopard :: App Converted To Unix Executable File / Fix It?
I moved Illustrator 10 to our server (I'm on a mac, our server is a pc) because I was running out of disk space. When I next checked on it or moved it back to my mac, the application and associated files were all unix executable files. I've had this problem with documents and images and I just add the extension and all is well. I know the pc formatted hd has somehow wiped out the resource fork (or creator fork?) and I'm wondering if here is anyway to get in there and fix the app.

Snow Leopard :: After Turning On Firewall ITunes Taken Over Console Logs
I turned on Snow Leopard's Firewall, and the first time iTunes tried to get out to the 'net, I was asked to allow it to accept incoming connections. I did so, and I see iTunes in the list of allowed apps in the Security System Preferences pane. However, since then, Firewall entries about iTunes have taken over my logs, and it seems like mostly when I'm syncing our Apple TV. Console.app lists a new entry every couple of seconds like this:

11/18/09 10:17:04 AMFirewall {63}Allow iTunes connecting from 10.0.1.4:54107 to port 3689 proto=6

It's literally every few seconds, sometimes anywhere from 5-10 entries or more in a single second. What's going on? Is this a problem that should be fixed, or should I simply expect the Firewall to be this active in logging every time an app has to get chatty on the network? Also, everything's up to date: I'm on 10.6.2, iTunes 9.0.2, and Apple TV 3.0.1.

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: No Network User Login At Login Window When Over WiFi??
I can only log in as a network user (home directory on server instead of local) from computers that are connected via wired Ethernet, but not on computers connected via WiFi. From any computer a local logged in user can access server resources -- they just can't from the login window. It is as though WiFi is only enabled once logged in (however it still doesn't work even if I use Fast User Switching to get a login window.)

Anyone experiencing this problem and found a solution?

As a secondary issue, I haven't been able to figure out how to automount shares via any technique nor have I found an explanation of how to do it in the manuals. Enable Automount in Server Admin doesn't seem to do it for "Shared Library Folder" however at least something appears in /Network/Servers for "User Home Folders and Group Folders, although it isn't mounted. I've also tried Workgroup Manager, Perferences, Login Items, adding shares there, also to no avail. All the shares will mount via client system command so the sharing does seem to be working.

Snow Leopard :: Can't Login To My User Account Just Goes Blue Then Back To Login Screen
I'm on a 24" iMac core2duo running snow leopard 10.6.4 and all of a sudden it won't let me in to my main user account which i've always used. I get the list of accounts screen up and the others work fine, but for some reason my account when i enter the correct password it tries to load the profile then just goes back to the login.

Very frustrating as all my work, saved passwords and application settings are under that account, and whilst i can access files through my partners account (also an admin) Nothing is setup the way i like it.

Has anyone experienced this before, it feels like a corrupt preferences file or something but i don't know where to start. I'm just backing everything up through time machine and contemplating a re-install.

I've tried zapping the PRAM (cmd+opt+P+R), and i've repaired disk permissions. Anything else i should be trying?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Console Log Missing From Console.app?
In Mac OS 10.6, the Console.app had an option to show the "Console Log" which included what looks like the stdout/stderr message of running applications not explicitly sent to syslog. The option showed up as the second option in the system log queries/database queries list on the Log List.In 10.7, the only option is "All Messages" and there does not appear to be a way to view the "console log" as it was in 10.6. Is there a way to turn this on in 10.7? Does the Mac no longer provide a way to see the stdout/stderr messages for running applications (those run as .app and not from terminal)?see attached screen shots (left is 10.6/right is 10.7) with console messages option missing.

OS X Leopard :: Word Doc Appear As Unix Executable Files
I am running 10.5.5 on my Intel Imac. The problem is that many old MS Word documents have suddenly flipped into documents with no file extension, but which are identified in the Preview window as "unix executable files." I've had this happen before and all I had to do was add the .doc extension for them to become Word documents again. This time there is nothing I can do to change them over. I have tried opening them from Word, from Pages, from Text Edit, with no results. (I have also used all the possibilities available from Word as well). There doesn't seem to be any pattern - random documents in the same folder, created at the same time and modified at the same time, appear as unix files, while the others seem fine.

OS X :: Unix Folder Structure Exposed After Installing Leopard?
I installed Leopard on my MacBook Pro (Core Duo) from day one (totally clean install) and it's been smooth-sailing.

One niggle I had was that my Macintosh HD had all of the ugly Unix file structure exposed (see pic). I thought this was a bit sloppy and un-Apple, then when I saw a friend's mac and realised that it wasn't normal I assumed that for some reason hidden files were just visible - nope. I ran the command line commands to re-hide hidden files and it had no effect.

Anyone know how I can amend this aesthetic atrocity?
