Snow Leopard :: QuarkXPress 7.5 Crashes - Software Conflict With OS 10.6.3?

I'm a graphic designer who knows her way around a Mac fairly well but I'm having problems with running my version of QuarkXPress (7.5) on my new MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.3). I installed everything correctly- when it asked for all my serial numbers and validation codes- they seemed to go through no problem. When all was said and done, I went to launch Quark and it crashed right after the first little splash page comes up. I can't get it to work. I read a thread on Quark's site where a guy tried everything and ended up having to return his brand new MacBook Pro he ordered online (like me- fully loaded) in return for a MacBook Pro at the Apple store and then when he reinstalled, Quark worked. I'd hate to do that- I love my new customized MBP and have all my stuff on it already. Yeah, I use InDesign, but I need Quark as well.

Software :: QuarkXPress Crashes - Cannot Link Across Master Page Items
The error is confusing; it goes something like: "Cannot link across master page items" and brings me from my page, to the master page and keeps coming up with this same warning each time I try to Undo, or when I try to go back to my body page, it wont let me because of some crossed link?

This is very confusing to describe, but hopefully someone else has had this exact problem and luckily they have been able to fix this problem because when I Force Quit or either revert to last saved (this has happened to me twice now) it crashes Quark and the file is unreadable. I'm thinking of because this linking problem, it makes Quark crash.

Snow Leopard :: Working In QuarkXpress 6.5 Printing To Ricoh C2500
Everything else in my computer prints directly and successfully to the Ricoh Aficio MP C2500, but if I just send a job from Quark it usually says the wrong paper size has been chosen even though 'letter' has been chosen as the default. I've kind of sorted through that, but now when I print I have to go to page setup where "tabloid extra" has been chosen, reset it to letter or whatever I need, OK that, then go to options and change 'binary' to "ASCII". That's a lot steps just to print a page.

OS X :: Any Way To Fix The Type 1 Helvetica Neue/Snow Leopard Conflict?
I know this problem has probably been discussed and I've searched but have not been able to find good information. Main computer still running 10.4.11, MBPro running 10.5.8.

I'm a retired graphic designer, only now doing pro bono work, so not completely up to date.
Since leopard and snow leopard there are a number of font problems. Type 1 Helvetica Neue has been a standard of mine for 20 years. Likewise, Adobe Garamond Extra glyphs are in thousands of my files.

10.5.8 AGE characters do not show up. I installed 10.6 and they still don't show up. Any way to fix?
Also, any way to fix the Type 1 Helvetica Neue/ Snow Leopard conflict?

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Internal And Public DNS Conflict Breaks Mail
We set up a new Mac Mini Server to replace our existing Server. The Mac Mini Server is setup behind a Time Capsule, which acts as our router and DHCP server. It also acts as our firewall on the public IP address and forwards mail to our internal server. Our situation is almost identical to the example situation on page 18 to 19 in the 'Getting Started' guide. Our ISP acts as our DNS server and they host our public website. They also used to host our mail, but we have now moved the mail to our new in-house server. We asked our ISP to update their MX records to point to our static public IP address. Public DNS records for [URL] also resolve to this IP address. When we originally set up the new mac mini server, the ISP had not yet updated the MX records. I am wondering if this affects how the Server sets up DNS on the local server machine? Issue: The local server machine on the local LAN is called server.[URL] which resolves via local DNS (hosted by our server) to the server's internal IP address. (The local DNS server was setup automatically by the Server during initial installation / setup.) This conflicts with with public DNS records which identify [URL] with our public IP address at This somehow causes confusion for the server which consequently seemingly randomly resets our domain [URL] and host name [URL] settings under Mail settings - which breaks our mail service. (We then edit these to the correct settings and all works again.) I spoke to an Apple tech and they advised that we reinstall the Server operating system, using a local server name that differs from the public name. e.g. server.mydomain.lan (local) vs. [URL] (public). This may seem like a dumb question: Would it be easier to keep our local host and DNS set up to and then rather have our ISP change the records for our public address / IP to or public If we could make the change via the ISP's records versus our own, then it would save us a lot of work. A second potentially dumb question: Since we rely on our ISP for DNS name servers, could we delete / stop the local DNS server for the local network and just use straight IP addresses instead? Plan of Action: Assuming that there is not an easy fix via the ISP's DNS records, then I'll reinstall the operating system and use server.mydomain.lan as the local machine and domain name. If I do this, then what should I be using as the domain and host name settings in mail? .com or .lan? Should there be any need to manually configure DNS settings to make Mail work?

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: DNS Conflict When Running Open Directory Master Inside Of WIndows Network?
We installed Snow Leopard Server as an Open Directory Master in a building that already has a Windows Primary Domain Controller. The intent was to create a Mac network inside of the building with their own services. The Mac server does not pull LDAP/Kerberos/etc. from the Windows server and the Mac clients do not use the WIndows server for any other services.

Everything (Final Cut Server, Open Directory, DNS, File Sharing) worked fine for a day. The next day, all of the windows machines were getting DNS conflict messages on their screens every 15 minutes. After shutting down the Snow Leopard Server, the Windows machines are back to normal.

I am still learning my way around the mac, so I'm looking for some advice here. Is there some way for me to delete this smart group without launching the app? OS X Leopard :: Office 2008 Causes Fatal Conflict When Trying To Save?
I'm in some rather dire need of assistance - any help you could give me regarding this topic would so much appreciated! The problem is this:We are a college music department trying to run a suite of iMacs over a Windows network. The iMacs are locked to their maximum level, so only administrators can perform updates (regular users can't even, for example, save a new "Normal" Word document template!). More often than not, whenever we try to save projects (in all applications but most noticably Mac Office) to our network user areas the "black screen of death" appears with the message 'you must restart your computer immediately'. I have read this is caused by a kernal panic and I copied the following log from Console after the last crash

Server V10.5 Leopard :: Connect Conflict - Different IP Addresses On All Clients
When I am connected to server1 and try to connect to server2 I only see the shares on server1. And vice-versa. This occurs for different users. The obvious problem to me was DNS, but they both resolve to different IP addresses on all clients and the IP addresses are setup on the respective server.

- Server1: Xserve, Quad Core Intel, MacOS X 10.5.7, running Directory Services and bound into our AD, AFP, FTP and SMB.
- Server2: Xserve, Dual Core Intel, MacOS X 10.5.8, running AFP and bound into our AD.

- Server1 is also configured with bonded Ethernet ports and static IP
- Server2 has only 1 Ethernet port configured as static
- DNS server is on AD (Windows Server 2003) and correctly identifies both servers. Server1 also has DNS record for 169.x.x.x as the Ethernet interfaces default to this after bonding.

Looking at the clients - they are running 10.5.x and 10.6.x and some have username/password recorded in Keychain and some don't. So there doesn't seem to be a pattern of connection and configuration on clients to indicate a problem.

OS X Leopard :: 3rd Party Extension Conflict (won't Shutdown)
My G5 has refused to shutdown for a few weeks now. If I startup in Safe Boot (holding the shift key) it works fine so I guess that's a 3rd party extension conflict. how to troubleshoot that to find the problem? The only thing that has changed in the system recently was the addition of a Viewsonic VX2439wm but no drivers were added, just attached the monitor.

Note: At shutdown, all GUI disappears (dock, menu) but I can still call up the Force Quit screen with the key combo but there are no items in the application list. The user desktop background remains. If I hit the Ctl-Opt-CMD-Eject keys after requesting a shutdown, the screen goes blue and stays that way.

OS X Tiger :: Why QuarkXPress 7 Creating Such Big Files
I have a "problem" with QuarkXPress 7.3 and I don't know if this is the right forum to ask. Anyway, I have created a document, about 750 pages, with 1000 pictures placed in it. I have divided it in 3 layouts. I'm saving the file and the file created is 1,20GB. Isn't that a very big file for QuarkXPress? In that project there are 3 layouts. I tried to make a copy of that file and delete 2 of 3 layouts and the project's file size is still the same! (Last year, I had created (almost) the same document and as I checked that document now, its size is about 280 MB!) The problem is that I have "autosave" on (every 5 or 10 minutes) and it takes some time to save it! Why does Quark has made SO big file?

Software :: QuarkXPress 6.52 Failing To Print Files (Verdana Font)
When printing from PPC or Intel Macs running 10.4 or 10.5, Quark fails to print files containing Verdana. On 10.5 Macs, the file prints, but substitutes Courier. On 10.4 Macs, the file fails without notification. It just disappears from the queue. I've tested copying the text to InDesign CS3 and it prints just fine. I've tested printing to four different HP LJ models, they all fail the same. One printer (HP LJ 9050) kicks out an error and requires a reboot: 49.60FF. Copying the font(s) from a Mac that prints fine does not work. I've thought about trashing the Quark preferences, but am waiting for a window.

Snow Leopard :: Lots Of Crashes With 10.6.2?
10.6 seems to crash more than any other version of X I've had. Especially after that last security update last week. And when I say crash, no, I don't mean the force quit type crash, I don't mean the kernel panic thing either where it tells you you need to reboot and and least it's an "orderly" type of crash, I'm talking about a good 'ol OS 9 style "freeze", where it's like you took a screenshot of your screen and no way to get out of it except reboot...

Been happening a lot since that last security update, randomly and when I plug an external monitor in and out of the DVI on my laptop. I also heard 10.6.3 is supposed to address a lot of crashes. So is this whole thing just me for some reason or have other people noticed this too?

Snow Leopard :: System Crashes And Errors In 10.6.4
Before I installed the Snow Leopard, my system was working perfectly fine, without any crashes or having to "work like a Window user". But, ever since Snow Leopard was installed and updated, I seem to be experiencing errors and crashes that are not expected from Apple. First, it was that my application was crashing in my system, making the screen to be locked and I was unable to gain control of it. Well, since it was that application that was causing the trouble, I stopped using it. However, the problem persisted though I thought it was the end of it. Even without opening that application, my system still hang and lock any control over it. I am not a developer, so I don't install extraneous things or software into the system. All I use my system is mainly for personal entertainment and schoolwork.

Snow Leopard :: Multiple Application Crashes ?
I have a brand new iMac: OS 10.6.4, 2.93Ghz Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB 1333MHz DDR3 RAM. I added this iMac and another identical one to my Active Directory Domain and have the users logging in with Network Accounts. One of the iMac's is having applications crash constantly. The three apps that are crashing are System Preferences, iCal, and Mail. I have pasted the crash report from one of the System Preference crashes below. After the crash the System Preferences icon has a question mark over it and will not launch for several minutes. Once the question mark goes away it launches again and everything may be fine for several hours then one of those three apps will crash again with a similar crash report.

I am new to Mac's and this is the first time I have added them to our company network. I'm proficient with all other hardware and software in my environment but not sure where to start with this issue.

I just downloaded the 10a380 build of snow leopard, and burned it using disk utility to a DL DVD. The burn completed successfully and the computer recognizes it. Every time I click on Install, it opens the installer and I press continue.. it says "Finding Disks" with a blue progression bar for about 30 seconds, and then exits the installer. I even rebooted the computer, holding down option, and when it gets to the screen with different partitions, the disk ejects itself. I have bootcamp with windows 7 installed if that makes any sort of difference.

Snow Leopard :: OS Crashes When Posting Comment Over 4KB
I tried Leopard and Snow Leopard, both hang at the same time when I click "Post", the dim screen scrolling down and shows that I need to Press the Power Button more than 4 seconds to Power down and reboot. I was shocked, because I've been using Leopard 10.5.x (I have installed an Update recently) for over 3 years and have never hung, not even one time. I was very shocked by CNN's webmaster, it seems like they hired a very good programmer to make this script, so it can hang our Mac right away when one post a comment over 4KB in size. It hangs every time I try, the same time, same situation. I thought Snow Leopard will pass this security loop hole, but it failed too. I feel so sad. Both Leopard and Snow Leopard will hang when you leave a comment message over 4KB in size on CNN web site.

Snow Leopard :: Flash Crashes All Browsers After 10.6.5 Update
I started this thread because the one at was marked Answered.

Immediately after updating to 10.6.5 (incremental from 10.6.4), Firefox started crashing on the 2nd or 3d window load. Switching to Safari, I experienced the same behavior, but with a helpful error dialog identifying the Flash plug-in as the culprit.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Flash, no help. I used OnyX to rebuild permissions and do a host of other maintenence things, some of which I didn't even really understand, but no help. (That was one of the proposed fixes at the other thread that apparently worked for someone, though I can't be sure he had the same OnyX settings as I did). I eventually re-installed Snow Leopard from disk, then did the Combo updater, then installed Flash fresh. Still no help.

I've installed the previous version of the Flash plug in(flashplayer10_1r82_76_ub_mac.dmg) and now am not crashing anymore, but given all the security concerns around Flash, I don't see this as a workaround I want to trust for long.

Anything else I can try to do to get the current Flash plugin to work with 10.6.5? Others have apparently had the issue but solved it through one of the techniques above, and clearly others aren't having it at all. My only other course of action is to wait for the next System update and hope the conflict is gone, but since this appears to be a limited problem, not holding my breath that will be the answer.

OS X :: ICal Crashes - Full Of Errors In Snow Leopard?
I waited a long time to upgrade my MacBook to Snow Leopard, mostly because I didn't really need any of the speed increases or other updates, and because I remained concerned about having new bugs in my system. I was always happy with Leopard and never had any issues. I finally did upgrade to SL, and iCal is giving me hell. Its tough to explain the problems that its causing. Basically, the boxes get out of alignment (see attached screenshot), then stuff disappears, sometimes will come back if I click forward a month and then back. If I do this more than one or two times, it just straight up crashes. It is incredibly frustrating. Has anyone else run into similar iCal issues? I feel like a calendar program is one of the more straightforward things Apple has to work on, so I am really surprised that out of everything, this is the biggest upgrade problem I have run into.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Freezes - Crashes - System Hangs
A few months ago I had a problem with my Macbook Pro, (late 2009 model, 15" 2.53 ghz) that many users with Snow Leopard have, the random 30 second freezes. I simply reset the PRAM and SMC and I never encountered it again. Now, out of the blue, on Sunday (yesterday), I started experiencing these hangs again, but worse. The night before I had been browsing the web and my battery went to reserve and shut down, so I plugged it in and when I awoke and turned it on I started experiencing problems. I figured I would try the same fix, and it almost seemed to make the problem worse. Now if I shut down the computer via "apple -> shut down", then turn it back on and log in etc., from the first few seconds the machine hangs. If I open a folder I get the immediate beach-ball and the machine is un-responsive for anywhere from 1 minute - 5+ minutes.

I have read a lot of fixes for this problem, but most of the people's problems resulted from using Safari or Spotlight. I strictly use Firefox and very rarely even open Safari, and I think I've used Spotlight maybe 3 times total, none in the past few months. So far the things I've tried are:

- Reset PRAM
- Reset SMC
- Run Disc Utility and verify, repair etc. (from SL install disc)

So I'm wondering right now what can I do? Its finals week right now and im in college so wiping my HD is not an option. I feel like there is just something hanging the computer but I can't find the culprit.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: TM Causing Constant Crashes?
Since I hooked up a new external hard drive as a TM backup, my computer crashes constantly. And I mean constantly.  I never had this problem with my previous external drive, which eventually failed.

If I unplug the new drive, the computer works perfectly. Having spent $$$ on a 1TB drive, I don't want to buy yet another one.

I did notice that the drive has USB 3.0 on the bottom ID label.  I'm using USB 2.0.  Does USB 3.0 require a special port because my 2007 Mac Mini doesn't have one as far as I know.

Mac Mini 1.83ghz, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Great for a while.
