Never had any issues with myMac Book Pro until today. Now when I open Illustrator, Safari (on some web pages) and Photoshop the mouse icon just keeps spinning and all the programs eventually crash.

Snow Leopard :: Finder Constantly Crashes At Startup And No Dock Icons
So everything was running quite well yesterday when apart from running chrome, notes, and vuse, I tried to resumed my vmfusion session and then it suddenly disappeared and then the machine started beachballing which was followed by a finder crash which left me with just my desktop image on the screen and nothing else. After a hard restart, the desktop came back but without any of the icons normally on the desktop and when i wanted to open up an app from the dock, the icon disappeared although the name (for example system preferences) remained.

All the functionality like spotlight and wifi at the top get highlighted but dont work, and then finder crashes again to just show the desktop image and nothing else. This has happened over and over, no matter if I started it in safe mode, repaired permissions, or even reinstalled snow leopard. I don't know what else I can do since it wont even let me start or open any apps or folders. I feel it was a problem with vmfusion messing up with the kernel but am not certain.

Snow Leopard :: Finder Periodically Plagued With Spinning Beach Ball
SBBOD = Spinning Beach Ball of Death. Could someone who understands MacOS X internals please explain to me why the finder needs to wait for an external Firewire drive to spin up to:

1. Open an app from the doc. (sbbod until the FW drive spins up)
2. Quit an app via right clicking the dock icon of the app. (shows 'Application not Responding' until FW drive spins up then 'quit' is the available choice)
3. Get a running program to respond. (sbbod then app responds as usual when FW drive spins up)

Let me set the scene. I do not have 'put drives to sleep' in energy saver. Spotlight is configured to ignore all of my external volumes. None of my apps use the external volumes for scratch or anything else. I rarely if ever directly save to an external volume from any application. I cannot change the behavior of the FW drive going into Stand-By mode (I've checked with Seagate and the feature is not changeable via firmware or dip-switch/jumper settings). My only thought is poor filesystem buffer cache management. Problem is even that doesn't make sense.

If I haven't read from or written to the external drives there shouldn't be ANY in memory buffers associated with the now in stand-by state firewire drive. The SBBOD usually only takes 5-10 seconds to go away and Finder behavior to return to normal. I know it sounds 'petty' but it definitely is a flaw in what is supposed to be (and usually is) a very responsive GUI. I've experienced this annoying behavior with the standard Apple apps (Mail, Address Book, iCal, iTunes etc) and my 3rd party apps (Photoshop CS3, Excel, Word, Cisco VPN client. I'm thinking about writing a crontab entry to 'touch' the FW drive every few minutes to keep it spun up as a workaround.

OS X Leopard :: Constantly Getting Spinning Color Wheel?
I have a 15" MBP that is from the late 2006 era. It's the 2.16GHz Intel Core Duo model. A few weeks ago I noticed that it started getting really slow and the color wheel was showing up all the time, taking forever to load anything. I searched around forums and stuff and decided that I needed to replace the HD. So i bought a brand new HD which I installed. Worked fine after that--until now, about 3 weeks later. Now the color wheel is showing up quite frequently (although it isn't as slow as it was, but it is still a big nuisance nonetheless). It will happen at any time, not necessarily when I'm opening a file or doing processor intensive. I also just replaced my 1GB RAM with a 2GB stick of brand new RAM, because I thought it might be that. It hasn't made a difference. When I check the Activity monitor, nothing is hogging the processor at all. However on the RAM tab it shows that ~864MB is active and 655MB is inactive, leaving 200MB wired and 326MB free. I don't know what that data really means, but I can't see anything in the list of "All Processes" that is hogging a ton of RAM. The biggest user was Safari which is 144MB.

The drive is spinning constantly and drains the battery quickly. It appears to me that the drive is constantly being accessed which is stopping the "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" setting from working correctly.

I have looked at activity monitor but cant understand what the processes are and therefore if they are doing what they are supposed to be doing.

The disk is being accessed every few seconds according to activity monitor disk activity monitor..

I have reset the power management module? by removing the battery and pressing the power button for 5 seconds, with no change.

OS X Leopard :: External Firewire Drive Constantly Spinning Up?
I am having a very strange problem with an external firewire drive that is connected to my iMac (Mac OS 10.5.6). About every 5 to 10 minutes the drive's light turns on and I can loudly hear the drive "rev up" like its about to do something, although I am not using or accessing the drive. It spins up for about 15 seconds and then ceases, but then in about 5 minutes the same thing happens again.

This behavior is driving me crazy and I can't figure out what process is causing this to happen. The behavior seemed to have begun when I stopped using Time Machine as my backup method, although now the behavior occurs whether or not Time Machine is on or off.

Can anyone explain if there is a way to close ALL open applications to that he in fact will no for sure that none are open?

I tried to reformat my computer to go back to the previous version of Safari, but their was one large "collective" update that quietly installed the latest version. I want to go back to my previous version of Safari, but don't know how to do it without reformatting my hard drive. Is there an easy way to uninstall Safari and revert to the faster, more reliable version?

OS X Leopard :: Finder Crashing Constantly - Cannot Start Up From Install Disk
Looks like I have a conflict between spotlight and the finder. The spotlight icon is missing from the menu bar and whenever I try to launch an application etc. from the finder it freezes & I get the spinning beach ball. The screen refreshes but the dock remains

I have done all the usual tasks like repairing permissions, repair the disk, rebuilding the memory with DiskWarrior, Mainmenu tasks , Applejack, restarting, Tech Tool Pro etc.

I have tried using the install dvd but I get to the restart page and it reverts back to where I was before and does not read from the DVD so I can't get to the installer. Have tried the disk in the internal and external optical drives without success.

I also can't seem to restore the system with Time Machine because it says to use the install disk which
my computer will not read from the disk.

Short of doing a complete erase, is there any else I can do. The console is recording both Spotlight crashes and the Finder crashes every few seconds.

IMac Intel :: Firefox AND Safari Crashing - Can't Even View Some Webpages
Firefox AND Safari have been crashing. MANY times. I can't even view some webpages. For example, my gmail account. When I bring it up, it shows me my inbox, but then it sits there for a minute and has the rainbow wheel pop up, then it's frozen. I have to force quit because it says not responding. This has been going on for about 2 days, I've already repaired disk utilities. I've never had a problem with a Mac and I'd love to continue to say that. And by the way, this isn't spordaic. Every time I go to gmail, it freezes and won't let me view my mail.

Recently I have been getting spinning beach balls of death on a constant biases. They come when I try to open web pages such as [URL]... ANYTHING actually. They come when I try to open applications, they seem to come when I try to do almost anything. I cannot force quit when they come. I have tried waiting for them to go away, sometimes up to an hour and nothing happens. They have come when I try to open utilities to try to figure out what is wrong. They come in safe mode.

I freed up hard disk space, over 60 gigs of the 120 gig hard drive. NOTHING.

IMac Intel :: External HD Constantly Spinning But Not Mounting
I have a 675GB hard drive in a Galaxy case for my Time Machine backup. I started having some problems so I used disk utility to fix it. It tried 3 times and could not fix it. Next I tried Disk Warrior, and since there is so much data in the directory it always runs out of the 4GB memory running in my iMac. Later I was going to use Copy Carbon Cloner and it would not access it because it was locked. I looked and could not find the lock icon. Then it would not mount, but still showed up in Disk Utility, now it will not show up in disk utility, but still shows up in Disk warrior and Data Rescue 2. It is constantly spinning, like it is reading and writing, but since I cannot mount it any more, I cannot tell what is going on. No wait, the external enclosure is showing up, but no hard drive volume.

OS X Leopard :: Finder Crash - Copying Data - Spinning Color Wheel?
Have posted before. Running OSX 10.5.7 on iMac with 3Gig Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM and 1TB HD.Basically my issue is that anytime I am making a duplicate copy of data (into a diff folder), I get the rainbow spinning color wheel and it crashes.Usually I am copying larger amounts (above 2GB) but this happens for large or small copies.

I am somewhat new to Mac's, so I'm not sure how to troubleshoot.I've had the issue since I bought my iMac last summer, and my warranty is up at the end of June. It has been in the Apple Store twice for HW repair, and they replaced the USB portion of the logic board (found that during HW scan), and the second time, found no issues, but I was able to prove it happened so they replaced the logic board and the HD.Please advise. First time buying a Mac, and I love it.... BUT it crashes more than my PC.

IMac :: Fans Spinning At 3500 RPMs Constantly / Not Slowing Down By Any Means
My parents have an older 20-inch white Intel iMac that has run great through the years. But about a week ago it just started spinning the CPU fans up to 3500-4000 RPMs and it won't bring them back down. Istat shows that the CPU temp is around 90 degrees and the computer remains cool to the touch.

So it isn't overheating. My parents keep it off most of the time because they don't want to ruin it, but they're planning on using it in their business they're trying to start up. We've done some web searches and nothing seems to fix it.

IMac Intel :: External Hard Disc Drive Constantly Being Accessed (Spinning Up)?
Every 20 minutes or so, I hear my external hard drive spinning up.

I know that there are no other computers accessing it remotely, and I don't have any files open which are stored on the drive, so there is really no reason that the external hard drive should be spinning up for access. I also have Time Machine deactivated, so there's nothing there that should be causing this. I have set the "Energy Saver" settings to "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible", but when it spins down it shouldn't rewake so soon unless I try to access a file, right?

OS X Leopard :: Odd Window View Behavior In Finder
I'm running a new unibody MacBook with 4GB ram and 10.5.5. Today, I noticed that once I plugged in a portable USB hard drive, I started to see very slow performance in accessing the drive contents. It took several seconds for folders to open on the external drive. Next, I started to notice that all of my finder windows on my drive on the MacBook would not let me horizontal scroll to the left edge to the see the name of my files/folders. If I physically forced the scroll bar to the edge it would stay there for a few seconds and then spring back to the middle of the window, showing me a view of the window contents between "date modified" and "kind." I'm attempting to reboot now to make this go away, as force quitting the finder changes nothing.

Other info: programs running while this happened:
Firefox, Omnifocus, EndNote, Entourage, iTunes, iCal, Pages, Address book, Yojimbo, textedit, MS Word, Preview, Quicksilver, Spam Sieve.

OS X Leopard :: Removing Shared From Sidebar View In Finder
I work in a school where we have 10.5 server and 40 clients as well as a windows network. The two networks are separate to a certain extent but from a mac you can access a windows server/client and vice versa. Since we moved to 10.5 we have noticed that when a user clicks on finder they also get the side bar, one element of the sidebar called shared we want to remove as this shows the user all the network clients (mac, linux and windows clients) around the school and it poses a bit of a security risk.

I was hoping I could just import a plist, so logged in as a regular student user, went to finder preferences, unselected the areas which I didnt want the user to see. Then went to that users library, preferences and found the So I copied this then went to the server and selected the group students where I want to enable this plist but when I log in as a student it still shows up.

Has anyone managed to successfully get this working so it is removed from certain groups of users or computers? On our OD network in workgroup manager we have 3 groups and all users are at least a member of one of the groups and we have 2 suites of Mac clients, we also have a computer group for these. I tried to add the plist for the computers but didnt like me adding a plist for computers.
