OS X Leopard :: Find Out What's Eating Up Hard Drive Space?
I installed Leopard quite a while back on my 1,8 GHz PowerPC G5 tower. I had to try twice and call Apple support because I was having problems installing it. I never seem to have much hard drive space, and I don't really have much on this computer. My iTunes library takes up a bit of room, but there's really not much else on the hard drive. I cleaned out some old stuff tonight and made some room, but I am wondering how much of my space is eaten up by the previous OS. Also wondering if Leopard is on here twice because of the double install attempt.

I am trying to make room to install Logic Express 8. So where are the OS's on here so I can trash anything extraneous, and is there a way -- other than individually Apple I'ing everything -- to see what's taking up so much space on my hard drive. As you can probably tell, I'm not the most computer literate person.

MacBook Pro :: Can't Find My Files On External Hard Drive / Where To Find That?
My old computer (iBook G4) recently died, and I extracted the Hard drive from the computer. I got an external enclosure for the hard drive and got it up and running, and it shows up on my MacBook Pro.

My problem is that I can't find the files I really want, which were in the "Users" file. I can get to the Users file, and it says that there is 15GB in the folder, but when I open it there only like two files, and I even checked the hidden folders and they simply weren't there. Any ideas?

OS X Leopard :: Archive And Install Failed - Can't Find Hard Drive
My computer just randomly restarted this afternoon, and wouldn't advance past the apple start-up screen with spinning progress dial. So I started trying out my usual diagnostics:

1. Verifying and repairing disk permissions wouldn't even start (but at least at that point it recognized the hard drive).

2. I tried to Archive and Install, but it failed halfway through and told me to restart the installation. But upon restarting, the computer could no longer recognize the hard drive. (It asked me to select a drive for installation, but none was pictured.)

3. I connected it to another computer, which said the hard drive was not available for repair. However, I was able to run Techtool Pro and repair volume structures. It ended up greatly reducing the number of files, but since all my important documents are backed up, not a big deal. In the end, though, this didn't seem to change anything.

4. So now when I start my MacBook, I get the flashing question mark folder. As one last ditch effort, I reset my PRAM, but it didn't have any affect.

Snow Leopard :: TM On My Macbook Couldn't Find Its Backup Drive
I have a Mac Mini that has several HDDs hooked up to it. One of them is the Time Machine backup for my MacBook which has worked wirelessly without error for three months now. I recently rebuilt the OS on my Mac Mini by reinstalling the OS and all the apps. Anyhow, after I completed the re-installation I noticed that TM on my macbook couldn't find its backup drive anymore. After repointing TM to the same old drive with the sparse bundle its been using for 3 months, TM ignored the old bundle and wants to start over. Is there anyway I can trick Time Machine into just continuing on with the old bundle? I have a complete backup of the Mac Mini that I made before rebuilding its HDD. Is there a file on there (perhaps a plist file or something) that could use to trick TM on my Macbook into continuing on with the old sparse bundle. I really don't want to loose 3 months of backups. Besides, TM really should be able to continue an old sparse bundle. It just makes sense, but... well these are computers

OS X :: Installed A New Hard Drive - Can't Find Airport
I just installed a new hard drive successfully (I think) onto my Powerbook G4 after my original died. I installed Leopard from the legal CD - but now I can't find the Airport program. I know I have the original wireless card because my computer was running wireless on my old hard drive. Any advice out there?

I also realised that Dashboard didn't install with my OSX dvd. On the apple website that program is specified (as with Airport). Am I doing something wrong?

PowerPC :: Disk Utility Can't Find New Hard Drive?
I have a dual 1.25 ghz MDD Powermac G4. It was working fine until a couple of days ago. It froze up, I restarted it. I got a blank blue screen.

Also, the computer made some awful clicky noises that I've never heard before.

I booted from the OS X installation CD. Disk utility lists the WD1800 hard drive, but I can't do a re-install and there's no option to repair it.

I can't erase or partition it because when I try, I get a failure message saying it can't be done ("chosen size not valid for chosen filesystem"). The HD is listed in system profiler... with a capacity of 0 bytes.

I assumed that the hard drive had died, so I went to a local PC shop and bought the only IDE drive they had (a Maxtor 6l250r0). I installed it, then booted from the OS X CD.

I know that new hard drives need to be formatted, but I assumed that this could be done with disk utility.

But disk utility can't find the new hard drive, doesn't list in the left column. It shows the optical drives and the install CD and the old WD hard drive which can't be erased or repaired, but no new hard drive.

It's not listed in the system profiler, either.

I checked the cable connections and tried installing it in the front carrier rather than the rear, but nothing works - disk utility and system profiler can't recognize it.

The only other desktop mac I have access to right now is my old 450 mhz Sawtooth G4. I tried putting the HD into the sawtooth and got the same results - disk utility and system profiler can't find the new HD at all, but has no trouble finding the old 20gb HD and the DVD and zip drives.

I'm... not really sure what to do here. Am I doing something wrong?

Intel Mac :: Disk Utility Can't Find Hard Drive
I had to power off my iMac by Pressing the power key and holding it several times over the last few weeks. The last time it wouldn't reboot - I'd just get an apple icon. When I tried a safe boot I'd get the icon and it would change to a no entry sign.Next I started up from the snow leopard installation disk with the intent of repairing the iMac disk. The installation disk worked but when I opened disk utility it only found the installation disk. It didn't find the iMac disk.

Laptops :: MacBook Freezes On Startup / Can't Find Test For Hard Drive
My August 2007 MacBook runs OSX 10.4.10. It has performed flawlessly since my daughter bought it in 2007, and perfectly after I purchased it from her last september. The other night I was surfing the web while flying on a commercial airliner. (GoGoNet or something similar) Performance was kind of slow but I attributed that to the in-air wifi, which I had never used before. Then the browser started to hang with the spinning pinwheel. Option apple escape WOULD NOT force quit safari. After a few shutdowns using only the power button, the mac hung up on startup. I hear the chime, see the apple icon, the gear turns but it never goes past that point. It may be significant that the plane was flying through scary turbulence when my problems began.

When I boot up using the mac install disk 1, I can get it to start cleanly using the C key, the D key and NO keys. But when I run the hardware diagnostic, both short and long test, the mac comes up 100% clean. But i cannot see any test for the hard drive. When I try to run disk utility, the colored pinwheel arrives and it never goes away. When I go down the road of re-installing the system software, I cannot see the target drive.

When I put my ear on the deck, just to the right of the track-pad, I can hear the hard drive quietly spinning away with regular - not random - clicks.

I see that Apple is quietly replacing these hard-drives, but the affected computers seem to have a folder/question mark on the desktop on startup, not the apple/spinning gear.

I really would like to be able to recover my photos and some files if the hard drive is going to be swapped. But I am resigned to the situation that these un-backed-up files will be forever lost.

OS X :: Snow Leopard: External Hard Drive Won't Eject When Downloading?
This is a major issue for me, as I feel like I'm going to end up damaging my hard drive.

I am downloading a legal torrent to my external hard drive, however when I quit Transmission and try to eject my external drive, nothing happens. Snow Leopard doesn't even say it is in use like it is meant to. It just does nothing to eject the drive.

So I end up having to yank the USB plug out.

What gives? It ejects normally as long as I don't download to it.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Installed From External Hard Drive Won't Boot?
I have no id whats wrong, I want to install Snow Leopard(from the external) on my Core2duo Macbook pro, which is running Leopard at the moment.

I have a Snow Leopard image, and I have used Disc utility to partition the external hard drive (GUID), and I assume the partition and install went well on the external, because in Disc start the external appears as OSX 10.6.

Then the problem: The macbook wont boot from the newly made external it just gives me this sign (of course without the colours).

I have tried to start the macbook normal, and with the option key held down were the external pops up.

I have also tried to chose the external in disc start and reboot with no luck.

I have tried to start the Snow Leopard install(external) within Leopard where the install start fine, but when it reboots and wants to continue the install, the sign appears.

The external harddrive is a 5400rpm 40gb 2,5" which is only powered by the usb port maybe thats the problem?

I am being requested to repartition the drive using "GUID partition table" this is where I am now stuck, I cannot find any option which allows me to partition the drive. I go to the erase and name window but there is no option to partition.

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: IChat Service Can't Start Anymore / Looking For Files In Hard Drive
About 2 months ago after i removed the iChat service i renamed my harddrive from HD 2 to HD2 (without the space) because of certain problems. Snow Leopard :: Hard Drive Space Disappears / Can't Account For Missing Disk Space
Hard disk space disappears for no identifiable reason.

I have been using this computer for 4 years, and the problem emerged within the last month.

I am aware that downloading files, creating files, chatting, recording, downloading mail, and browsing will use disk space, and that certain applications download/create files in the background. I'm used to the amount of disk space these things take up. In the past month, the amount of space I lose is very abnormal.

I think about 20-30 GB of space has inexplicably vanished in the past month. I've gone from having about 25 GB free (with the other space accounted for) to having to scrounge for files to remove to keep more than 2 GB free. Right now, after restarting, I have 4.5 GB free, and that will disappear after a normal days' worth of computer use.

What's draining my space???
