Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: How To Replace An Expiring Self-signed Certificate

Well, I've successfully (I THINK) replaced two of the three certificates that are expiring.First off - 90% of what's in the Security manual concerning certificates is useless to this issue. I don't want to know how the watch is made - I just want to tell time! In fact there is a GLARING typo on Page 167 of the Snow Leopard Server Security Configuration Manual showing a screenshot of the Certificate Assistant in Server Admin that is just plain wrong!

It's clear there is no way to RENEW the certificate. You have to delete the old one and replace it with a new certificate. The issue I have is that with all the services using the certificate, I don't know what the impact to the end-users is going to be when I delete that expiring certificate. It appears that a certificate is created automatically when the OS is installed, although I installed the OS Server on a virtual machine and I didn't see where it got created, nor was I given any input during the creation (like extending the expiration date).I don't know whether those certificates are critical to the running of the OS or not, but I went through the process of creating a new certificate in Server Admin. I deleted the expiring certificate. Because the two servers on which the expiring certificate was deleted does not have any services running that require a certificate (such as SSL on my mail server), nothing bad seems to have happened or been impacted negatively.

I did, however, name the new certificate the exact same thing as the old certificate and tried to make sure that the parameters of the new certificate were at least as extensive as the old certificate. You can look at the details of the old certficate to see what they were. Here's the "critical" area of the certificate that was "auto-created" on my virtual server. (It's the same as the one on my "real" server.Note the "Public Key Info" for "Key Usage": Encrypt, Verify, Derive. Note the "Key Usage" Extension is marked CRITICAL and it's usage is "Digital Signature, Data Encipherment, Key Cert Sign". Extended Key Usage is also critical and it's purpose is Server Authentication.

OS X Leopard :: How To Replace THAWTE Certificate By VERISIGN Certificate
These day millions of user receive an e-mail "Important Thawteģ Personal E-mail Certificate Holder Notice - Thawte Personal E-mail Certificates and Web of Trust are being discontinued".

The message comes with a special offer from VeriSign giving you a full year of VeriSign digital certificate fro free which seems to be a fair offer (I think normal price is around 20$ per year).

Enrollment and installation of the new certificate is well described and worked perfectly: you'll end up with a brandnew certificate from VeriSign in your Key Chain - BUT...

Mail keeps on encrypting with the old one from THAWTE and Address Book shows in your own record that your mail address is still linked to the old certificate.

Some users will just delete the old one - DON'T DO THIS - because you might find out that all your old encrypted mail that you received earlier won't be readable any longer.

I din't find a way to select the new certificate for the encryption of outgoing mail and I gues there thousands of former THAWTE & Mac users who are trying to find the solution.

OS X Leopard :: Mail Certificate Signed By Unknown Authority
Since this morning everytime I start up Mail on my iMac using 10.5.8 I get a warning window displayed stating:- Mail can't verify the identity of "pop.xxxx.net"(where xxxx is the name of my internet provider). The certificate for this server was signed by an unknown certifying authority. You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be "pop.xxxx.net"which could put your confidential information at risk. Would you like to connect to the server anyway? There are three options:- Show Certificate, Cancel and Connect.

Clicking on Show Certificate brings up the info:
pop.xxxx.net (where xxxx is the name of my internet provider)
Issued by Verisign Class 3 Decure Server CA
Expires: Sunday, 3 April 2011 00.59.59 BST

The certificate was signed by an unknown authority. The "Reveal" triangle for "Trust" shows that the System Defaults are being used, no value is set for SSL
and no value set for X.509. The "Reveal" triangle for "Details" shows a whole host of details including the subject name being my Internet provider with the common name of pop.xxxx.net where xxxx is the name of my Internet provider and the issuer as being Versign Inc. My Internet provider cannot explain what is happening and Applecare don't see any risk in connecting but I am concerned as this has never happened before. Mail work perfectly on any powerbook using 10.4.11.

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Create SSL Certificate
I have done this once, and it worked then. Can't remember precisely what I did.

I have a CA setup in my Admin account. The self-signed root is in the keychain.

In Server Admin, I attempt to create a new leaf SSL server cert, giving it any name so as not to conflict with any other cert. It seems to work, but then gets an error:

An error occurred while trying to save the certificate to the server. Check your server's logs for more information. The error (code 5001) was: Expected SecKeychainItemImport to return a SecIdentityRef, but it did not

I have searched the server's logs. Nothing. I have first-aided my keychains. No probs. It seems the public/private keys are added, but the certificate is not.

I have tried manually doing this: creating a certificate in Certificate Assistant and trying to move it to the System keychain. The public/private keys can be moved, the Certificate not. Some error about the item already existing.

Trying to get a new SSL cert to be used for a WEB site, I have it imported in login, but cannot move it to system. It always complains that there is already an item of that name there. There is not. I can move it happily between other keychains, but not System.

Keychain first aid passes, fwiw. After a few times, if fails mysteriously. Nothing in the logs.

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Can Server Replace The Services Of MobileMe
Can the Mini Server replace the services offered by MobileMe? Find My iPhone is now free. If I got a domain name, could I use Mini Server as email Server, correct? What's the downside of using my Mini for this? If the power goes out and I send an email using my iPhone would the iPhone know to keep sending the event until the Mini had power again. Similarly, if events, contacts, email etc. reach the Mini and is about sync (send out) to other devices but power goes out, would the Mini know to re-send (re-sync) once power comes back on to the Mini?

Server V10.5 Leopard :: Finding Wildcard SSL Certificate And ICal
So, I've seen this posted before, but there doesn't seem to be any resolution for this issue. We just purchased a SSL wildcard certificate for ourselves and are having trouble with it working in iCal.

The behaviour is, we can see it the cert in the iCal Settings page, but when we select it and click "Save", it defaults to a "Custom Configuration..." instead of the [URL]certificate holding. I have tried every single option I can in Server Admin to get this configured, and nothing works. Also, let me say that the Self-Signed works just fine, but not the purchased SSL cert. It does have an intermediate cert, but this cert has worked fine for everything else including Mail, Apache, etc. If I do try using a Custom Config, then the /etc/caldav/error.log just throws up a bunch of errors.

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: VPN Server In Snow Leopard Server Not Accepting Connections
I've got some issues with a new Snow Leopard Server, running on a Mac mini Server, and VPN.

I have a Linksys WRT310N performing router duties. I have enabled the VPN Passthrough in the router's configuration pages (IPSec, PPTP and L2TP all Enabled). In the Applications and Gaming section, I have enabled ports 1723 (TCP and UDP) and 1701 (TCP and UDP) to go through to the mini Server. In order to have the VPN Passthrough enabled, I have to have the SPI Firewall enabled on the router.

I have both PPTP and L2TP enabled on the Server. When I first tested it, everything worked.

Within 24 hours, it stopped working, and I can't work out why.

On the Server, I can see in the logs the following messages: (server name and IPs changed to protect the guilty)

Mac OS X Lion Server :: SSL Server Certificate Does Not Work (copy Of Cert Included)
I am desperate for help because whatever I do I cannot get my own certificates to work. When I first set up Lion Server a so-called Intermediate CA and a corresponding SSL server certificate was automatically  installed and that works fine. Now, I wanted to create my own Certificate Authority (CA) and a leaf SSL server certificate.[URL]First I created my own CA, and then I created a new certificate with the Server App (ID type "leaf", certificate type "SSL server". (see screenshots below), and I had it signed by my own CA. When I checked the certificate it said "valid".Next, I exported the certificate from the keychain (as .p12) and then I went to Server App's "Import a certificate identity" to drag and drop the certificate onto the window. So far so good.

When I opened the list of certificates (Server App -> Hardware -> SSL -> Edit ) the new certificate showed up once, and after the Server App had tried to install the certificate it simply did not show up any more. I have copied the important parts of the certificate below (private parts have been cropped). The common name and the DNS name  are "myserver.domain.private", and yes, DNS is working fine.(I stopped started services and re-booted in between creating and importing the new certificate.)

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Add Attendees To ICal Server On SL Server?
I try to narrow this problem down as much as I can. First off... the normal calendar function works fine, but adding attendees to events doesn't work anymore. The server isn't live yet, so nobody noticed the error until now and I have no idea what went wrong and when. When I access the Wiki calendar the error happens as soon as I want to add attendees. It says something like "You don't have permission to view this calendar" in a popup.Webserver log:
<IP-address> - - 12/Dec/2009:13:38:26 +0100 "POST /calendars/__uids__/28DEB<...>D7C/outbox/ HTTP/1.1" 403 131

Decided that I wanted to image the server just in case I screwed something up, I could just image it back to the Mini and then I would be back a few steps rather than starting from scratch. I shut down the mini server while both my clients had I chat open. Both of them displayed the dialog "Ichat has lost a connection with the server dialog.

Imaged the server, took the mini back to where it was sitting, plugged in the ethernet, turn on the power. When to go to ichat and both clients can't connect. One gets you have been disconnected dialog, the other which is snowleopard gets "Enter your user name and password)

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Using Permanent Server To Server VPN Connection?
I have two Snow Leopard Servers in different locations which I would like to connect to each with a VPN over the Internet so that it appears as if they are in the same LAN. Something like:

ServerA_live_IP <- ("permanent" VPN over the Internet looking like a LAN) -> ServerB_dynamic_IP

The connection should be permanent without a user being logged into either of the two. Both servers need to still be able to communicate "normally", so not all traffic can go through the VPN even if only in one direction (routing?). In addition it has to be actually server to server, I cannot put any other devices such as dedicated VPN appliances between the servers.

Snow Leopard :: Difference Between SSL Certificate And Authentication
First off, is there a difference between SSL Certificate and SSL Authentication? I have a POP account. The Incoming port is set to 110. The Outgoing, 26. (This is according to Bluehost.com). The security settings for both incoming/outgoing are set to none. Everything works fine. But if I want extra security, I'll set the incoming to 995 and outgoing to 465. If I set the security settings to SSL, do I check "Use secure authentication", or do I have to purchase a SSL certificate to secure the authentication? This is where I'm confused. I tried asking the hosting company but they're not much help.

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Change Filename When Publishing To FTP Server?
When publishing a captured podcast to a FTP Server I noticed the Podcast Producer Server builds a filename for the resulting movie file from the entered title and some UUID that is very long. Because I always run into codepage problems when handling special characters on FTP servers and my customers are having problems downloading files with special characters, I want to remove them from the filename. How to change the filename of that movie to a shorter version? Or even how to put the files into different folders?

MacBook Pro 2.4GHz
Mac OS X (10.5.2)
