PowerPC :: What Kind Of Hard Drive Do I Put In A Clamshell Ibook

May 17, 2009

i just bought a clamshell ibook on ebay for $90, quite a bargain i think. its 366mhz, 320mb ram, only problem is the 10gb hard drive. i know its upgradable. the 9.5mm UltraATA-66 hard drive which is what i read it has, dont really go over 10gb, or at least i cant find any that do. the ones i find are very expensive. i see some clamshells on ebay upgraded to 20 or 30gb, what kind of hard drives do those people use? i know it takes a lot of disassembly to do it too, if someone could point me to a guide to doing that it would be most good.

PowerPC :: Best Way To Get OS For IBook Clamshell

Aug 26, 2006

I bought an indigo ibook clamshell 366 on ebay. Looks great but has no software. Can someone tell me best way to get OS 9.2.2 and/or OS 10 (.2 or .3) on this machine. Will any of the restore cds I see for sale work on this, or do I need other retail versions. I can put this on a network with my mac mini if that will help install.

PowerPC :: IBook G3 (Clamshell) - Booting From New MBP CD?

Oct 18, 2010

I recently came into possession of an iBook G3 (Clamshell) model M6411. Unfortunately, I believe it had a cactus HDD - it shows up in Target Disk Mode on my current model 13" MBP but refuses to format or read - locks Disk Utility/Finder up when accessed. The iBook also has NO CDROM drive in it, either (removed by previous owner, reasons unsure). I'd just like to get it to boot to see that everything else works ok. I have a retail install of OS 9.2.1 as well as an iMac G3 OS X 10.1 install CD, and a 10.3 retail disc too.

I am aware that PPC Macs cannot boot from USB CDROM drives, but they can using FireWire. So, I tried plugging it in via FireWire to my MBP, put the MBP in Target Disk Mode, put the CD in it, and held Option while booting the iBook. The iBook sees the CD on the MBP, I click on it to boot it, and it shows the Happy Mac (this is with the 10.1 CD). However, after about a minute, it shows a strange "broken folder" icon (a Mac OS 9 folder with a tear down the middle) on a grey background. It gets no further. If I use the 9.2.1 CD, it shows a Happy Mac briefly then switches to a floppy disk with a question mark. The 10.3 CD refuses to boot at all. One thing I forgot to mention is if I try and boot the iBook normally, it shows a Finder icon alternating to a ? in a blue Mac OS 9 folder.

PowerPC :: Cannot Install OS On Clamshell IBook

Jul 22, 2006

I bought 25 clamshell 466mhz graphite IBooks and whenever I put the HD in and put a disc in the drive to try to install an OS nothing happens, so I pressed the option key and this blue screen with a lock on one side and an arrow on the other, with a space to write in, in the middle. Now what I need to know is what should I do? I can put these things together like no one else but when it comes to software I'm lost. I'm going to try to attach the picture of what the screen looks like but I'm not too good at that either. But if someone can get these things up and running I'll give you a complete (no power cord) graphit clamshell for free.

PowerPC :: Putting OS 10.4 On IBook G3 Clamshell?

Dec 19, 2009

At my school, we have a 300MHz, 512MB RAM iBook G3 clamshell with OS 9 on it currently. It does not have FireWire and trying to use XPostFacto did not work to install. Me and my friend decided that we will try to just replace the current HD with one with Tiger already on it. We already cloned the drive with Carbon Copy Cloner from a Power Mac G3 we also have running. Drive is still sitting waiting for installation. Will this work to put Tiger on this machine? Just wanted to know before my friend and I take apart the laptop to install a HD that might not even work.

PowerPC :: Reviving IBook Clamshell With SSD

Jun 28, 2010

I have an iBook G3 Clamshell 466mhz SE here and had the hard drive upgraded to a Team 16gb IDE Solid State Drive by a Mac repair shop (didn't have the time to do it myself at the moment). The tech there tried to install an OS but (from the phone explanation) the drive is recognized but can't be formatted for Mac or something like that. If you need more information on anything please ask me as I haven't booted the iBook myself yet. I have already spent $150+ on the SSD and labour costs I would dearly love for it to work. To my understanding any HDD/SSD with the right interface should work (which I know it does).

PowerPC :: Hard Drive Swapping - IBook G3 And IBook G4

Oct 20, 2006

My brother's iBook G4 (800Mhz, First Rev) has completely splattered itself and we're getting a new Macbook for him under insurance. My iBook G3 (White, 900Mhz G3..the last G3 Rev of the iBook) has a failing hard drive.

Now, could I swap out those two drives, at least to recover stuff? And is there a specific method of opening up the iBook G4 so that I don't break stuff (I've already messed with my G3..and ended up with a dozen extra screws ^_^

Mainly the aim is to salvage the hard drive and swap them out; replacing my faulty iBook G3 one with the iBook G4 one which is perfectly fine.

PowerPC :: What To Do With Clamshell IBook (Airport Card)

Dec 28, 2006

I sort of, well, inadvertently bought an old Clamshell iBook on eBay on Christmas Day (when I'm bored, I make lowball bids on things - this was one of the rare cases where I won). The model I got is a 300 Mhz with 96 Megs of Ram - but it also has an Airport Card (which, really, was, itself, worth the price I paid for the thing - it was a really good price).

I've got an extra 256 Meg chip laying around - will the Clamshell recognize a PC133 chip? Or will it have the same problem as Lombard and only see half the memory? Also - am I better off putting, say, Panther on it, or should I do a clean install of OS 9.2? I never really used OS 9.2, what's the functionality like in terms of Airport - am I going to have trouble connecting to modern networks?

PowerPC :: Clamshell IBook Not Recognizing Battery

Jan 23, 2007

I have a 366 G3 graphite iBook that was working fine in OS9 a few months ago. I took it out of the closet yesterday and installed 10.3. I did all the updates etc., and now the computer will not recognize the battery! There is a battery icon on top, but when the light is amber on the machine (charging) it says it is calculating how long it will take to charge. Once the light is green (charged) it says there is no battery. I take out the plug and the machine turns off. On top of that, the clock has to be reset everytime I unplug the machine. I don't get it, the battery was like new back in September - it would go for hours. Now it's like it's not even there!

PowerPC :: Clamshell IBook Running Slow?

Nov 2, 2008

My old clamshell iBook seems to be running very slow suddenly, I have to wait for typing to catch up with me and in this chatroom I go in, the chat screen keeps filling in and changing to same colour as background so I cant read what people have sent into room or and all buttons disappear until I run cursor over where they were!

It doesnt do this when I go in same room on iMac. It didnt used to do it on the iBook either! is it just getting old and needs replacing? Think mine was made in 2000, so is about 8 years old.

How do I do things like disk defragment or see how much hard drive and memory is been used? I wondered if it was maybe full?

PowerPC :: Connecting Clamshell IBook To Internet?

Jan 7, 2009

Now when im in front of the telly, it would be nice to use the iBook, however ive tried tonight and failed Basically I unhooked the ethernet cable from the iMac, into the iBook - but nothing. The iBook is running OS 9.1. I went to the TCP/IP panel on the iBook and changed it to connect via ethernet...from there I assumed everything else should be automatic. For the configure section, there are four options - manually, using BootP server, using DHCP server, or using RARP server. I have only tried with the using BootP server, as for the others it asks for settings which i do not have, and are not provided under the iMac TCP/IP settings.

PowerPC :: Will Clamshell IBook Run Smoothly With Panther Upgrade

May 7, 2009

I just took delivery of a clamshell ibook that I bought from ebay last week and have been wondering whether OSX would run well or not on it.
The specs are:
Indigo Firewire version
366mhz G3
193mb ram
10GB Hard drive
Airport fitted

Att the moment it is running OS9 very smoothly indeed, and I don't have enough cash at the moment to upgrade it in any way. I would leave OS9 on it, however I have never used the operating system before, so wondered whether it would be wise to upgrade it to panther, as I have a copy lying around. My concern is that installing panther would leave the machine feeling much slower, as I'd rather have a faster machine that can't do as much than a machine can do most things but takes ages to open up the finder.

PowerPC :: Hard Drive Failure In IBook?

Sep 15, 2006

I was using my mom's 500 mhz G3 iBook circa 2k1, running 10.2.0 and it decided to start tweaking out on me. Being a somewhat aware computer person, I thought tat a simple restart would fix all of this. Shows you how much I know. Anyway, the boot-up screen showed the icon of the file with the question mark inside. Find the OS 9 CD that we have and I booted up through the CD. I finish starting up and, to my surprise, the drive appears to be erased- the computer asks me if I want to initialize the disk. I hit cancel and proceed to run the disk repair on the OS 9 CD. After it's done scanning, the the results are: "Missing Thread Record, 62078, 4260". What does it all mean? Will the computer be able to recover? What fate lies in store for the iBook?

PowerPC :: Ibook Won't Recognize New Hard Drive

Mar 15, 2007

I have an ibook g4 1.2 ghz 14 inch model with the 60 gig HD runnig Os X. One day, it start freezing up, and when I restart it, it would be fine. However, after a couple of day, it would not longer boot and I would get the folder with finder and question mark. I ran the hardware test on the CD, and it said I had a mass storage error. So, I went and bought a new hd and put it in. (another hitachi one, exactly the same). So i boot it up, run the hard ware test and it is fine. Then I go about installing os x and stuff, and everything is fine. However, on my first restart a couple of hours later, my computer no longer boots up again. I run disk utility, and it does not see any Hard drives, and when i reattempt to install my os x, it can not find a destination folder. What is going on? Also, I have the old HD from my ibook that I put in my external Hd case. If this thing is not actully broken, can I use it to boot through the usb 2.0 drive on my mac? I tried to plug it in, but for some reason no power goes to it, but if i plug it to my desktop, it powers up. (the light on the case)

PowerPC :: Installing Hard Drive In IBook G3?

Aug 15, 2007

so my boss' ibook g3 just broke, he brought it to apple and they said it needs a new hard drive and were going to charge him something like 400 dollars to replace it. He decided not to do it because it's so old. (not sure how old, but it's a white g3 with a cd tray). Anyway, i told him i should be able to do it. I've found directions online on ifixit and stuff but need a few more questions answered.

1. Will any 2.5 inch hard drive fit? I think i'm going for 5400 rpms because i don't want it to get too hot and he wants 80 gb. how is this one? [URL]

2. How will i run the os once it is installed? Do i need to installl 10.0 first and then move up? Can i install from the cd or do i need to do it from another computer via target disk mode?

3. ifixit suggests i get a "spudger" which i guess it a plastic anti static toothpic type thing to remove hard to get parts. Definitely needed or no? I have a set of small screw drivers that i've used for my powerbook that i thik should be fine.

4. Any tips at all you wanna throw at me.
