Power Mac G5 :: Start Up - Tower Powers Up, Fans Racing, Monitor Blank?

Basically, the tower powers up but doesn't start up. There is no start up tone and my monitor, which is correctly connected, shows nothing but a message to check connection cables. Within a 30 seconds of turning this beast on, the fans start racing at max speed and continue to do so until I hold the power button to turn it off.

I recently had a playstaytion connected to the same monitor, Mac connecting via VGA, ps3 connected via dvi. I would shut down th Mac and wait a minute, then power the ps3 and the game would come on the monitor. Since ditching the ps3 a few days ago and reconnecting the Mac to the Monitor via the original connection (dvi) the above mentioned problem started. At first I could manually turn off the Mac, restart and get the welcome screen on the Mac and be ready to go. Now the thing just races the fans and never shows me an apple or desktop to work with. I googled about resetting the smu and did that, but there was no change in the situation. Have any ideas for this poor soul?

Power Mac G5 :: 23" Cinema Display Is On But BLANK With G5 1.8 Dual Tower?
The display works fine on an older G4 powermac with an aftermarket 64Mb ATI 9000 Pro graphics card. The G5 runs a CRT or another LCD monitor with no problems. I have run software update, zapped the pram, restarted. Still nothing. I am only using one monitor at a time. I'm pretty sure it's a graphics card issue. ATI says only their chips are used on stock Apple cards so they can't help. This is a dup post from the displays discussion but after 30 views and no comments there i noticed this board

Power Mac G5 :: G5 Fans Are Blowing Full On Start Up?
I've scanned loads of forums and sites to see if there is a fix to this. So far all i've tried has resulted in nothing changing.

The fans on my G5 are blowing really hard as soon as I start up. I've changed the processer settings in energy saver. Repaired permissions. Cleaned out the inside (not much dust at all). The G5 i have at work runs a shed load more apps & info throughout the day and that doesn't sound like jet on the runway.

Power Mac G5 :: G5 1.8 Single Stuck On Start Screen Fans Wild?
I just installed an airport extreme card into my power mac g5. After putting everything back together and plugging everything back up, I powered it up, and everything worked fine. I started to install the 10.8 update, and it got stuck on the very last part. An error message popped up saying that there was an error during the update and it was moved to the trash, take it out of the trash if you want to continue with the update. After that, everything froze, so I powered it off via the power button. Upon attempting to turn it on again, it wouldn't advance past the white screen with the gray apple and the spinning loading sign, and the fans were at a constant increase until they were going full blast. I powered it off again, and turned it on and the same thing happened. This has never happened before. Is the airport card the culprit? I do remember finding a lot of dust on the inside of the computer when I installed the airport extreme card, could that in any way attribute this problem?

Power Mac G5 :: Quad Doesn't Start Up - Crashes And Fans Become Real Loud
I started having problems with my PowerMac G5 Quad 2.5GHz (late 2005) about a week ago. First I found the computer with the fans running at full speed (really loud) after leaving the computer alone for a while (instead of going into Sleep mode). At this point, I wasn't able to recover it from that state and had to force it to shut down by holding down the power button. Another thing that caught my attention was that a couple of red LEDs were on (just behind the power button). Last night, after finding the same situation and shutting down the computer, it would no longer start up. I could hear the hard disk starting to spin and the chimes sound, but I'd get no video at all (no gray screen or anything). After trying 3-4 times, the computer finally started up.

The situation got worse this morning, as again I found it with the fans on full blast. Now I can't get the computer to boot anymore. I no longer here the chimes sound or get a video signal at all. I can't open the CD tray either (it doesn't seem to recognize the keyboard) so I could not boot from a CD. And holding down the power button is no longer shutting it down, now I have to unplug it. I've already tried relocating the RAM, resetting the SMU, and read about resetting the NVRAM (however, this was not possible as I have no response from keyboard input). I've not installed any new software or hardware lately so maybe this was caused by the latest software update. After reading forums and searching the web, it looks like this problem has become quite common in the past few weeks. Has Apple taken any steps to solve this problem on the affected computers?

Power Mac G5 :: Start Up Won't Get Past White Screen - Fans Blow Loud
I have a G5 single 1.8GHz (late 2005 model?) serial number YM439***QYT It gets stuck on the White Screen at startup. A minute later the fans start to blow really loud and it just keeps doing that and does not boot up. I was using a hard drive that was copied from the original drive. So I put the original drive in and it was fine for a day. Now the computer is doing the same thing at startup with the original drive, as explained above. I reset PRAM & NVRAM, nothing. I have two different video cards, that's not the issue. I do not have the OS Install Disc as this computer was given to me as a gift.

Power Mac G5 :: Intermittent Racing Fan And Lock-up
Sometimes when I push the power on button to boot up, the boot is incomplete and fans begin racing. I power off and try again, usually three to five times, each time getting a little further in the boot till finally it is successful. My Apple disk diagnostic detects this logic board error: 2FAN/4/8: Fan for backside. The problem has been around for a year, maybe two, but it is getting worse and worse.

What other things might I do before jumping to the expense of replacing the logic board?

I have run permission repairs, run ONYX maintenance routines, blown out the dust, scanned the surface of my hard drives...

I keep reading and searching for things to try. I'm going to replace the computer battery now. Should I press the SMU reset button?

I've been looking at the long list of read outs in my console and system logs, but don't know how to make sense of it. My system was pretty stable until about a month ago when I tried to update to QT 7.3... at least I think that's what started a host of software problems... including lots of Safari crashes, and problems exporting Final Cut Pro movie files. So I've got what I think are hardware and software issues. But for now I'd like to focus on the hardware problem discribed above with the logic board error. I only mention the other issues in case they might all be related.

Power Mac G5 :: Fan Racing And Get Black Screen And No Restart
Came home today to find my G5 Quad fan racing and a black screen. Pressed the power button and it seemed to be starting up but after a few seconds the fans would begin to race and the screen remains black several attempts yield the same results. ( No chime after pressing start button, just drive spinning up for a few seconds then fans begin to race.) Blew out any dust and pressed SMU, same results.

Power Mac G5 :: How To Stop Racing Fan And Disc Drive Motors
Tried Disk Utility and I ran fsck, and repairs were made, but with no help on the racing motors issue. Ran DiskWarrior and that was no help either. I took the tower to Advanced Office Systems and they told me that the HD was about to "go", so they did a file transfer of the HD info and installed a New HD. Same result....the fans still race on startup so I shut down. At immediate restart, everything is fine! The only difference now is that the computer runs slower, like a stuttering movement overall. The racing motors only happen at startup, when the tower is cold.

NOTE: Sometimes the fans do NOT race, but the desktop freezes at startup and shows the beginning of an error message in the upper left corner about system failure(the complete message is not shown). OR the cursor is frozen in upper left corner. At that point I can shut down, then restart and the computer runs normally.

Power Mac G5 :: Dual 1.8Ghz Tower Won't Power Up?
I went on a weeks holiday, and stored the tower in a cool dry lockable cupboard for security. Cabled it back in to mains/monitor etc. Pressed the power button and nothing happens. There is a click from the front of the tower, the power light flashes on once for a short time then fades out.

I have tried resetting the PMU/SMU, unplugged machine for 10 minutes, pressed the PMU reset button etc. I have taken out the most resent RAM upgrade (installed about 4x months ago) still wont restart.

It's beginning to look like either a power supply failure or possibly a logic board failure.

Power Mac G5 :: Powers On - Does Not Boot Up And Light Flashes 3 Times?
Yesterday I powered on my G5 and it loaded up normally but the mouse was not responding, the red light was on indicating it was plugged in. Regardless I unplugged the mouse and replugged it back in but still nothing. So I held down the power button to shutdown my computer. When I next powered it back on after checking the connections for my keyboard and mouse, the G5 Powers on, but does not boot up. I get nothing at all on the apple display, apart from the power light which stays on but flashes brighter 3 times (same on the unit) and will do this constantly until I hold down the power button to shut it down.

I have a lot of photos and files I haven't got round to backing up yet and would love to be able to get them backed up on my portable HD

Power Mac G5 :: Dual 2.7 Powers On But No Boot Chime / Video And Keyboard Activity?
I have a Power Mac G5 dual 2.7 from late 2005 w/ 2 GB RAM and no hard drive. Clearly, I won't be able to boot without a system. I bought it without the hard drive, thinking I'd install my own but test with a universal Tiger disk first.

The problem I have is that after I turn the power on, the fans go and the manufacturing LEDs (the two red LEDs indicating that the plastic cover is off and that the optical inputs are present) go on, but nothing else. The keyboard shows no activity, and I can't open the DVD-RW with the open button. No video comes up. I've tried resetting the PMU. The fans start slow, but rev up after a cople of minutes. The logic board shows no diagnostic LED activity, and other than white when I press on or off the power button, no activity from the LED above the power button. I tried reseating the video card and using a new PRAM battery.

Power Mac G5 :: Can I Move A Hard Drive From A 1.8 To A 2.5 Quad Tower
I tried moving a hard drive that was from a 1.8 ghz G5 tower and placing it into a Quad 2.5 G5 tower so that I could gain a speed benefit. The drive from the 1.8 ghz machine is running 10.4.11 (an OEM disk that shipped with it originally).

Well after I moved the drive to the quad 2.5 and tried to boot from it all I got was a gray screen. The quad G5 was probably looking for drivers on the 1.8 drive but the original OEM install disk that was used on the 1.8 didn't have them on it.

So, I don't want to reinstall a new retail version of Tiger (one that would have the updated drivers for the quad 2.5). Does anyone know which pieces of code I can copy from the quad 2.5 system folder to append to the older drive from the 1.8 system folder so that the newer 2.5 quad will recognize and boot from it.

Now, however, one of my internal hard drives (not the primary one) won't mount. Various programs can't even tell it's there. I'm completely lost as to how to solve this problem. My first thought was to try to swap it into an external case to see if it would mount that way.

Hardware :: G4 800 Tower Switches Off After Start Up
I have a G4 800 powermac Quicksilver tower. I haven't used it regularly for a number of years, although it has been started up say every 5 months or so without any problems at all. Last weekend I started it up and it worked for about 2 minutes before suddenly shutting down, without warning. I tried starting up again and it started up, only to shut down as soon as the desktop appeared.

I started up again, and whilst the light in the power switch on the front panel illuminated, and a short 'apple boing' noise came on, it just shut down immediately after. Having left the computer untouched until the following weekend (today) the same order of events has unfolded. two minutes for the first go until unannounced shutdown, and then progressively shorter amounts of power. Whilst this isn't a critical piece of hardware for me, it does hold some useful data.
