PowerPC :: Replace Tower G5 Single Core Chip To Dual One?
Someone I know wants to buy a used Mac pro G5. It has a speed of 1,8 Ghz. I think he's going to use it for music. (logic pro, adium). But he said he was going to use FCS as well. His question was if he could replace the G5 singlecore chip, with a G5 dualcore chip. And if that's possible, could somebody give me extra info about compatibility and such. For example, will it just boot without problems when you replaced it, or do you need to do extra things (drivers, reinstalling the os and such). The G5 will be used in the near future for HD video editing. Also, I know the new intel mac pro have graphic cards from nvidia and ati. But what graphic cards do the G5 towers have? are they good?

Power Mac G5 :: Dual 1.8Ghz Tower Won't Power Up?
I went on a weeks holiday, and stored the tower in a cool dry lockable cupboard for security. Cabled it back in to mains/monitor etc. Pressed the power button and nothing happens. There is a click from the front of the tower, the power light flashes on once for a short time then fades out.

I have tried resetting the PMU/SMU, unplugged machine for 10 minutes, pressed the PMU reset button etc. I have taken out the most resent RAM upgrade (installed about 4x months ago) still wont restart.

It's beginning to look like either a power supply failure or possibly a logic board failure.

Power Mac G5 :: 23" Cinema Display Is On But BLANK With G5 1.8 Dual Tower?
The display works fine on an older G4 powermac with an aftermarket 64Mb ATI 9000 Pro graphics card. The G5 runs a CRT or another LCD monitor with no problems. I have run software update, zapped the pram, restarted. Still nothing. I am only using one monitor at a time. I'm pretty sure it's a graphics card issue. ATI says only their chips are used on stock Apple cards so they can't help. This is a dup post from the displays discussion but after 30 views and no comments there i noticed this board

My trusty G5 dual tower 1.8 is competent, but slow for HD video rendering. Would the new Mini be a significant upgrade for me? I have a great monitor and keyboard already. I can't see much difference between the Mini and standard Imac, beside the slower internal drive. If I use an external firewire drive for capturing, would this no longer be an issue?

Our setup is 2 GT120s in a Mac Pro with 1 30" Cinema HD display (display 1) and 1 30" Eizo CG303W (display 2) both using DVI cables. The 30" Cinema HD display works fine but the CG303W is very pixelated in its native mode of 2560x1600 and other resolutions are screwed up as well. This is not a monitor problem as when I use the same monitor on another Mac Pro, the resolution is crisp and fine.Changing display 1 and display 2 still has the problem on the Eizo. The Apple Cinema display is fine either way so it seems the GT120 is working okay, at least with the Apple Cinema display.

This just started a few days ago. After turning my G5 off the previous night I start it up in the morning and the computer hangs at the Apple gray screen. I let it sit for two or three minutes, hit the power up button the monitor, let it sit for a minute then restart and it is fine. I have added no new software or updates for a few months. I used Disk Utility to Verify/Repair Disk Permissions and Verify the volume and it passed. Is the battery, power supply, or some other hardware going out? Or is it some system software issue?

Power Mac G5 :: Dual Displays On Power Mac PPC Dual 1.8ghz
I have been trying to set my PowerMac PPC G5(vintage 2004) for dual displays.I have two Apple cinema displays, either one will connect to the back of my computer via the ADC. The connector in the computer is an 18 pin (with funny jumper) female receptacle. It follows that the ADC on the display is 18 pin (with funny jumper) male connector. One of my monitors is brand new. I am using a Radeon X800XTC card that has one ADC (female receptacle) and one DVI connector (also female). Is this possible?? I did order what Apple told me would work, the DVI to ADC adapter, model M8661LL/B. I could not use this item on my system, as it comes with the exact opposite sex for the connectors! Also the Belkin adapter is the wrong sex as well.Mac OS X (10.5.1)

One Of Those 24 Items Is A File : INSTALL MAC OS X. When I Double Click On The Icon A Window Opens With MAC OS X TIGER. Power Mac G5 :: Can I Move A Hard Drive From A 1.8 To A 2.5 Quad Tower
I tried moving a hard drive that was from a 1.8 ghz G5 tower and placing it into a Quad 2.5 G5 tower so that I could gain a speed benefit. The drive from the 1.8 ghz machine is running 10.4.11 (an OEM disk that shipped with it originally).

Well after I moved the drive to the quad 2.5 and tried to boot from it all I got was a gray screen. The quad G5 was probably looking for drivers on the 1.8 drive but the original OEM install disk that was used on the 1.8 didn't have them on it.

So, I don't want to reinstall a new retail version of Tiger (one that would have the updated drivers for the quad 2.5). Does anyone know which pieces of code I can copy from the quad 2.5 system folder to append to the older drive from the 1.8 system folder so that the newer 2.5 quad will recognize and boot from it.

Power Mac G5 :: G5 Tower Won't Boot Beyond Chime?
my Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5. Fan has been running loud and fast, and on last restart, whirred like crazy w/no reboot. Shut off by pressing power button on front of unit and waited a few minutes. Now when I try to turn on, I get a chime and brief noise as if trying to start but then nothing but blank screen (if I leave on, the fan gets loud after a few minutes). Also tried unplugging power cord for a few minutes then restarting, but that hasnt worked. Cannot find my OS X disks (augh!), so what now?

Power Mac G5 :: Tower Now Boots But One Of The Internal Hdd Won't Mount?
For those of you who saw my previous thread, my G5 tower would turn on and play the startup chime, then sit there until the fans ramped up. It seems that the problem was the Belkin PCI card. I removed it, and the machine started up with no problems.

Now, however, one of my internal hard drives (not the primary one) won't mount. Various programs can't even tell it's there. I'm completely lost as to how to solve this problem. My first thought was to try to swap it into an external case to see if it would mount that way.

Power Mac G5 :: Reload System Software On Tower But DVD Drive Dead
My G5 tower won't boot. It hangs up just as the blue progress bar reaches all the way to the right. I'm sure I need to reload the system software, but the DVD drive is also on the fritz and I can't use it. I put an old G4 TiBook into target disc mode, hooked it up to the G5, held the option key down at startup and I was able to get the G5 to boot - so I'm sure the hard drive is not dead. How can I use an apple system DVD disc and reload the software? Is there another way? I looked at some old G4s I have lying around, thinking I would pull a drive out of there and use it, but it just looked too hard to do. Is there a way to use Carbon Copy Cloner? I have free firewire drive space. Can I just copy the system file from the G4 TiBook onto the G5?

Power Mac G5 :: Start Up - Tower Powers Up, Fans Racing, Monitor Blank?
Basically, the tower powers up but doesn't start up. There is no start up tone and my monitor, which is correctly connected, shows nothing but a message to check connection cables. Within a 30 seconds of turning this beast on, the fans start racing at max speed and continue to do so until I hold the power button to turn it off.

I recently had a playstaytion connected to the same monitor, Mac connecting via VGA, ps3 connected via dvi. I would shut down th Mac and wait a minute, then power the ps3 and the game would come on the monitor. Since ditching the ps3 a few days ago and reconnecting the Mac to the Monitor via the original connection (dvi) the above mentioned problem started. At first I could manually turn off the Mac, restart and get the welcome screen on the Mac and be ready to go. Now the thing just races the fans and never shows me an apple or desktop to work with. I googled about resetting the smu and did that, but there was no change in the situation. Have any ideas for this poor soul?

OS X :: Power Mac Dual G5 Dual Video Cards
I have a Powermac Dual G5 @2.0ghz, with 8gbs of ram, and 2 1tb drives running the latest version of 10.5. The problem I have is that I have 4 LCD monitors that I was using with my PC. I swapped that out with my mac, and while I am no novice, I didnt take into account that I cant just put any AGP and PCI video card into the system. What I need to know is if I can use two PCI video cards both with Dual Monitor outputs, and if so, which cards should I buy, and where? I found some video cards on ebay that are PCI, and it is quartz extreme compatible, but I am unable to use it with the AGP card already installed. The person selling the cards was unable to answer whether or not two of those cards could be used together. I only have about 75 per card to spend. Please help, I cant go on using this awesome machine with only one 19inch LCD. and I cant afford to buy new monitors

Power Mac G5 :: Process Of Troubleshooting A Dead Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8GHz Machine
I'm in the process of troubleshooting a dead Power Mac G5 dual 1.8GHz machine. I've been through every procedure I can find on the Internet and I even have a second machine that I have been using to swap certain parts with for testing. During my experience I have had a few questions that I cannot find an answer to, even on other forums. If anyone out there can answer these questions, I'd be grateful.

1. The Power Macs that I am using to swap parts are slightly different models (revisions?). As far as I can tell one is an M9393LL/A (ser. no. G84010VSQES) and one is an M9454LL/A (ser. no. G84493NQQPQ). I know the CPUs are good in the M9454 model because the machine is working fine. When I put one of the M9393 processors into the working machine (M9454) in slot B, the CPU does not show up in System Profiler. The working machine boots fine, but it only registers one CPU. Does the logic board in the working PM automatically reject/ignore the CPUs from the other machine because they are from a different revision, even though they are basically the same spec?

2. If I can't swap the "in-question" CPUs into the working PM, how can I determine if one or both of the M9393 CPUs is bad?

3. In my experience there is normally a plastic or paper shield glued to the logic board beneath the dual CPUs. The logic board in the non-working PM does not have a shield. Is it possible that the lack of a shield caused the failure? Is the shield there to prevent contact between the CPU daughter board and the logic board? Or is it there to reduce heat transfer? Or, why is it there?

4. Is there any way to run a diagnostic on a PM that is completely dead and won't start or boot even from CD?

5. I'm 99% sure the logic board is bad in the M9393 machine, but how do you troubleshoot the logic board itself to find out what has failed? Or, do you always have to install a new logic board?
