View 2 RepliesI forgot my administrator's password for my home computer. I purchased office 2008 for mac with a free upgrade to office 2011. I upgraded it to 2011 when it came out (late 2010/early 2011). I have since made a new password and forgotten what it is. The mac tells me to reinstall my microsoft office but when I do, with the office 2008 disc, it tells me I have MORE RECENT SOFTWARE and to use that. I did it on line and cannot find it again.

Does anyone have any recommendations on one software suite versus another? I have used iWork (brief use of the trial) and MS Office in the past, and right now I am looking at Openoffice, which seems really nice.
I am considering dropping some money on iWork, but I am not sure if it is worth it.
Any shared experiences or recommendations or comparisons will be very welcome.
I need to make a powerpoint presentation but don't have any Microsoft office programs whatsoever on my mac. Everywhere I have looked on the internet has Microsoft Office UPDATES available but I need the raw product.
View 2 Replies View RelatedRather than listing Office for Mac on the Mac App Store, Microsoft is offering a new 30 day free trial for the suite, something that can't be done through Apple's App Store. In contrast to smaller developers such as Pixelmator, which have embraced the new Mac App Store enthusiastically, Microsoft (along with Adobe) hasn't released any titles through the Mac App Store yet.
It has released Windows Live Messenger and Bing search apps in the iOS App Store, in addition to the new iPhone OneNote, a note taking component of Office for Windows that hasn't ever been ported to the Mac. Were Microsoft to release Office for Mac through the App Store, it would likely become a top selling title, much as iWork has on the iPad and Mac App Stores. There are some modifications Microsoft would need to make however, including not being able to install background processes, needing to be self contained, and being unable to use undocumented, private APIs....................
If you try configuring a new macbook pro through the education store, I get all the usual student discounts and stuff. Now, like usual, they also have the option to get microsoft office preinstalled on my laptop too. However, clicking on it, does not add to the price at all (like its free....) but I can't see any promotion of this being free. Is this just my browser being weird or is this legit?
View 7 Replies View RelatedMicrosoft's Mac Business Unit this week is making available to Mac users a "fully functional, no strings attached" free trial of Office 2008 so that prospective buyers and users of previous versions can 'kick the tires' on new suite before plunking down the cash for a permanent copy. The 545 megabyte download is available after a quick registration over at the Redmond-based company's MacTopia website. The registration is required to generate an trial product key that will expire 30 days thereafter. Although Office 2008 for Mac made its debut over a year ago, this is the first time Microsoft has offered customers the option of trying the software before they buy it. The trial copy will run side-by-side with earlier versions of Office and includes a year's worth of maintenance and security improvements.
"The MacBU is aware that a number of customers have wanted to try Office 2008 for Mac before purchasing, and they have been working to make this available in tandem with updates to 2008," a representative for the software giant told AppleInsider.*"Today customers can now check out Office 2008 with the fixes and performance enhancements that have been made since launch." Once the 30-day product key expires, users will have the choice to either purchase a copy of the suite from an Apple authorized reseller or buy a product key from Mactopia online and be up and running without reinstalling. Of course, Microsoft fragments the office suite into various versions like it does its Windows operating system. A "Home and Student Edition" costs $149.95, the standard version is priced at $399.95, and the Special Media Edition fetches 499.95. However, Amazon.com has these same editions listed for $111.99, $240.00, and $224.95, respectively. For a breakdown of what's included in each edition, see this article. Meanwhile, readers interested in familiarizing themselves with Office 2008 and the history of Office without downloading the software may want to check out AppleInsider's six-part series: Road to Mac Office 2008.[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]
I updated to Lion on my desktop a few months ago and I swear now I can't read older Microsoft word and Excel documents correctly on this computer using Office 2011. The document opens and you can see all of the data in a preview window (from finder) but once it opens fully the data/words are not there. I have Lion on a brand new Macbook Pro I just purchased and installed the Microsoft Office 2011 and it opened the excel document I was having trouble with fine.I can't find many links for Office for Mac issues.

I have loved being a Mac owner since 2008...UNTIL now. WHO can educate me on the compatibility of Lion with the following (I currently have a 2G 2008 MacBook with 10.6.8 Snow Leopard)
- 2008 MS Office for Mac (Word, PPT, Excel)
- Have many old files in MS 2004 and even 2002. What will happen with these when I am on Lion?
With this move to Lion/the Cloud, I cannot get a straight story from Apple on compatibility of Lion with MS products (Word, Excel, PPT.). Totally different scenario when I was a PC CONVERT. Apple sales people could tell me all that I needed to know to move from PC to Mac. A little bait and switch now that I am on board.

Microsoft on Tuesday released stability and performance updates for Office 2004 and Office 2008 for Mac, both of which also patch vulnerabilities that could allow an attacker to overwrite the contents of a computer's memory by using malicious code.
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.5.1 Update
Aside from the security fix, Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.5.1 Update [14.5MB] also updates the Japanese postal code dictionary in Entourage and fixes an issue that causes Word 2004 to close unexpectedly when opening a document that contains a numbered list.
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.2 Update
The 12.1.2 update for Office 2008 for Mac [159.6MB] is more substantial, repairing a global issue that prevented all Office 2008 applications from running AppleScript scripts from the Script menu, while also delivering a number of individual fixes for Word, Excel and Entourage.
More specifically, Microsoft said Word should now launch more quickly and tables will no longer included random instances of bold text. Other changes improve the display of form fields and the reliability of headers & footers in the word processing application.
Meanwhile, Excel should now open spreadsheet files that contain invalid characters and see improvements to the overall performance of calculations. Number formatting for some international languages and stability when saving workbooks that contain PivotTable reports has also been improved.
One of the major focus areas for Entourage was to improve stability when using Microsoft Sync Services, Microsoft said. In particular, Tuesday's update fixes an issue that where all contacts in Entourage or in the Apple Address Book would be deleted and re-created when you use Microsoft Sync Services. It should also prevent duplication of events and other items in Entourage or in iCal.
Other changes to Entourage focused on improving junk mail filtering, recurring calendar events, time zone information, embedded images, and the reliability when Entourage establishes a encrypted channel.
Student Office 2008 deal
Earlier Tuesday, Microsoft said it has teamed with a select few Apple authorized resellers like Amazon.com to offer students up to 30 percent off its various Office 2008 productivity suites when they're purchased alongside a new Mac before September 8th.
The offer translates into $15 off Office 2008 Home and Student Edition, $80 off Office 2008 Standard Edition, and $150 off Office 2008 Special Media Edition..
Amazon is also offering between $50 and $200 rebates on Apple's entire Mac line through August 25th.
I recently installed Office on my macbook. When using Excel, it quits unexpectedly and a window pops up asking me to relaunch. I relaunch and it takes me back to the last spreadsheet I had open but sometimes it doesn't save the last changes. I uninstalled and reinstalled the Office files and it still continues to happen. Any ideas?

I recently downloaded the iDefrag demo and it reports that my files are 0.7% fragmented but the free space on my disk is 75% fragmented, what does this mean? Should I be concerned and should I defrag the drive? My mac seems to take forever to boot up these days and programs open very slowly. I work with quite large Photoshop files regularly, but my scratch disk is set to a different drive to the system disk.
Any recommendations for the best way to learn about troubleshooting the Mac would be appreciated, as I'm keen to avoid any down time due to failures of any kind (I don't mind investing some money for the right training). The area I'm particularly interested in is restoring a system, if there are certain corrupt files, but doing this without affecting all the third party program files etc. I use carbon copy cloner to keep an exact copy of my system disk but am worried that if the system files becomes corrupt, I'm just making a copy of the corruption onto another disk!
I have a 2009 imac running intel core duo 2.66ghz processor, 4gb ram and 256mb graphics. It currently runs os x 10.5.8 and I wish to upgrade it to the latest operating system (lion?) I recently purchased a macbook pro 3 inch running lion. A friend told me I'd be able to upgrade my imac too as 'apple doesn't charge people twice.'
1) Is this true? and if so, how do I obtain the free upgrade?
2) should I wait until mountain lion is available?
3) Is the computer going to be capable of running the latest OS or will it need a ram upgrade?
