I installed the virtual microscope application "Virtual microscope 6.2.2" as system administrator and all works fine.As soon as I switched to my daughters account (standart-user) the application did not start. All I know is that the application needs java but I see no hint for additional requirements or permissions and also no error messages.I'm using OS-Lion, version 10.7.3?

I have set up my mom with an older Macbook Pro of mine to save her from the evils of the PC. I set up two users, one for her and one for me; hers is uber simple (big icons, only the essentials in the doc) mine is crazy complicated. We share apps, of course, which was fine until I realized she is going to want to download Mah Jongg game apps and the like from the App Store, and I would LOVE it if I didn't have to have all that cluttering up the root Applications folder. I already tried to move one app from root to her user's Applications folder and all that moved was an alias, the app stayed at root. So how does one move these things? Is there a way via the finder? Can I use terminal.

I want to separate the application folders of both myself and my girlfriend using the same Mac. She doesn't need to see my system tweaking tools and DVD conversion software, and likewise, I don't need to see her BlackBerry Desktop software and Facebook album tools. Currently, all apps reside in HD/Applications, as is default. My question is: is it safe to simply copy all applications into HD/User/USERNAME/Applications, or is this going to cause problems will existing file structures?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI seem to have lost my Applications folder from my User menu under Places in Finder. It is still present however, in the Macintosh HD menu under Devices. So I thought I would just drag it to my User menu where there was one before, however it started to copy the folder there. Is this the correct way to get it back there, should it in fact be copying the Application folder? Seems like a waste of nearly 11GB to simply have a copy there.

I have this program installed called KeyAccess (or KeyServer). It is used by my college to allow me access to the licenses to a slew of software provided by the school. However, it loads at startup, and I have no idea how to prevent it from doing so. There's no option to configure it not to, I have tried looking for an entry in StartupItems and Login Items of my Accounts preferences. It is located in the Preferences Pane, its not really a standalone program.

What I want to know is what would cause transmission to use most of my processing power, just on start up? this screen shot below was taken while waiting for the application to start. Transmission is up and running now, but why would it take 15-20 mins to do so?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a mid 2011 iMac running latest version of Mavericks. I recently purchased an external thunderbolt SSD and cloned my boot HD to it, excluding the user folders as these are too big for the SSD and will remain on the internal HDD, and made it the start disk. Then, once booted with the SSD, I went into users settings and mapped my user to the user folder location on the internal HDD. I then rebooted.Â
After the reboot everything is working just fine with the exception of Dropbox which first asks for my Mac user account password and then returns the following error and closes the app:Â Couldn't start DropboxThis is usually because of permissions error. Errors can also be caused by your home folder being stored on a network share.
I see involve going into the preferences in the Dropbox application and clicking the button to repair permissions, but I can't get to that because the application just quits. If I reboot using the internal HDD again I can get the application to load just fine.Â

I just bought a new macbook pro a little over a month ago and have since upgraded to Snow Leopard (fresh install). One day about a week ago, out of no where, the mail application seemed to launch itself whenever I opened my laptop (resume from hibernate?). It is asking me for my name and email address to start setting it up. From there, I press cancel and the window disappears but the icon stays on the dock like its open and when I go to the Force Quit window it shows Mail as not responding and I have to force quit it. This doesnt happen every time but happens pretty often for seemingly no reason.

unable to view user login in OS X Lion 10.7.3 startup. I had made some changes in icloud settings & by mistake must have checked some option related to username & password. I have a 15" mbp and a 20" external dell monitor. Right now I just have my macbook sitting beside my monitor in clam shell mode. It occurred to me that this is a giant waste of good desk space. The solution I have pictured in my head is some kind of stand that I can put my monitor on that has enough space under it for my closed mbp (with enough space for decent ventilation too). So if anyone knows of a nice stand that would do that, I would love to hear about it.
