I cannot find a way to search available network drives using either Spotlight or the Find command.This is a simple action in Windows. How do I do it in Snow Leopard (10.6.8)?

I have set up my mac at work to connect to the smb network, yet I cannot search the shared folders via the finder. I will pre-empt the apologists here, thanks, I don't want to hear you point of view about how I don't need this fuction. I don't want to hear how os x uses and index and apple are wise to disable it in network drives (yet they are not wise enough to implement any other way to search said drives...). I want to put my point across that they better fix it soon.  I also want to hear other people who 've run into this problem and if they 've found any work arounds. There's a free app called easyfind but I am not that happy with it, and there's also some convoluted terminal work around that has to be repeated every time os x starts from what I 've been reading.Â
I will also be submitting feedback to apple. Ios looking fancy artifacts are all good and well (I dislike them, but I am not that much bothered) but what about some real functionality in core os services such as the finder? Does any one at the os x team really think it's acceptable in 2012 that your mac connects to a network drive in an office and can't search it? I am using a folder in the network to store my work and I can't search that folder to quickly find something to show to a colleague? What do you expect me to do copy it over to my local drive, use a third party app to sync it to the network, and search my local drive instead?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have spotlight configured to not index the folder ~/Development, because it contains a lot of jars and I couldn't figure out how to turn off indexing of jars.Â
1) I open finder to ~/Development/Foobar, which is a folder containing other folders containing files ending in ".png".
2) I go to the search field in the toolbar and type "png", switch the search mode to "File Name", but nothing is found.Â
It looks like Finder's search function is completely broken if the folder being searched is not indexed by spotlight. Finder should search without the indexes instead, or the search field should be disabled if it is broken.Â
Is there an way to search a folder that is being excluded from spotlight indexing? How do I prevent spotlight from indexing the contents of jar files?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a PDF library located inside a bundle. Spotlight does not appear to search inside this bundle even if I trigger the search from inside it. I need it to index the PDFs to allow searching for key words in the text of the PDFs. If I remove the PDFs from the bundle Spotlight works fine, but I then loose some functionality of the software that I am using. how to make spotlight do this? I am running Snow Leopard.

I've made a Smart Folder to have one place to look for any bills I've paid in the last 40 days, with the following parameters:Â
- Search within a folder within my Home folder called "Accounts & Services"
- Name begins with "PD 2" (all my paid bills are labeled like "PD 2012-02-01 AT&T," for example)
- Last modified date is within last 40 days
The folder worked when I created it, and whenever I opened it for a day or so afterwards.Â
But a month later when I open the Smart Folder, the latest bills aren't there.Â
When I "Show Search Criteria," I see the "Search within" has been changed to a circular reference — it SEARCHES WITHIN THE SMART FOLDER ITSELF!Â
The practical upshot of which is that it finds only the files that were found at the time the Smart Folder was created, and does not find anything newer because it's looking in the wrong place.Â
I'm hoping someone has a remedy for this, but I don't have high hopes considering the "Mac Quick Tips" podcasts from 2009 in which Smart Folders are demonstrated show this problem in the demo without realizing it.

I have a 2007 mac pro running tiger currently. I'd like to upgrade to snow leopard, but I want to make sure that I'm not affecting the other drives on my computer. Currently I have all my apps on the main drive (the one that came from apple) and three other drives on the other bays. What is the best way of doing a fresh install without worrying about my other drives?
I was thinking of removing the three drives, do my upgrade and then slotting the drives back in, would my computer recognize these drives? Do I even have to take these drives out? I am also going to back up my main drive via super duper. If something happens during my upgrade, how can I clone my old drive data back?
Just updated to 10.6 from 10.4, and one of the first things I notice is that it keeps spinning up my three external harddrives at actions that should not set them in use, like starting an application or opening the trash. It seems pretty random, though I'm suspecting it has something to do with mdworker, quicklookd or both. If anyone knows of a solution that doesn't involve unmounting the harddrives, do tell.
View 11 Replies View RelatedThis is the third drive that has failed since I was assigned this Mac Pro at work a few weeks ago, and the drive was purchased less than a week ago. The other two were older drives. They would suddenly stop being readable. Sometimes there was a problem ejecting the drive before it stopped becomeing readable (message would say the drive couldn't be ejected because another program is using it, when there were no programs open). One of them eventually mounted again and I recovered some of the files (but some files weren't readable when I tried to copy them). But that was just luck as they all seem now to be consistently unreadable. When I plug them in I get the message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". same if I plug it into a different computer. And when I try to repair, it shows this: http://i.imgur.com/ivK9d.png. When it happed to the second drive, I just thought it was a fluke... but now a third, brand new drive? Something about the computer must be causing it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just can't figure this out. I have several external drives I use to edit video. Most are 1TB drives, and I recently got a couple 3TB drives I was hoping to use to consolodate my scratch drives and reorganize my footage, etc. Ideally, I'd like to just be able to drag the entire contents of the smaller drive over to the bigger one, but I can't, because I keep getting error messages. Sometimes it's "Cannot complete, [file name] is in use" or I get an "error -50" code. Â
Before I began the copy, I formatted the destination drive in Mac OS Extended (journaled), and zeroed out the data to protect against bad sectors. I've scanned the drives since to determine if there are any verification issues (no), and I've tried turning off icon preview and the preview pane, none of it solves the problem. What the eff is going on here??Â
(I'm using all firewire800 drives. Currently several LaCie and Western Digital drives, but only trying to copy one at a time)

When executing a find (command f) in the finder, it appears the find does not work on any non-boot drive.
For example, in my Mac Pro (10.5.6), the find command works fine for the boot device, but when selecting another internal drive or a connected server in the resulting finder window, the find never returns any results, even if I search for a known file.
It is possible to rename an external NTFS formatted Disks Drives??????
I've tried with "diskutil" command but it's no possible.

I have an external drive with a lot of music on it. I recently upgraded to Lion and now the spotlight will not search the disc.
There used to me a spotlight box in the corner of the drive window and now there isn't. The disc is half a tare and it's next to impossible to search manually. It is a Go Flex drive.

I would like to always have one external hard drive attached to my iMac for Time Machine backups, and another external hard drive off site - periodically swapping the two. The though is that if there is fire or theft, it won't help to have a hard drive onsite attached to the computer, because both the iMac and the hard drive could be lost. Is Time Machine smart enough to allow me to configure two drives, so that whenever I plug in one of the drives, it can figure out what needs to be backed up?

Has anyone used an wireless external hard drive to share media with more than one mac? I'd like to have a central hd where I can store shared documents/files. I'd also like to be able to use that same hd to back up the different macs. I tried searching in this forum and didn't find too much. View 2 Replies View Relatedthis is more of a very open ended question to see if anyone knows an answer, but I just uploaded snow leopard onto my mbp (early09) and all is great until I try and connect to my wifi, which it does but at the same time brings down the whole system so no computer can connect to the Internet the only way to fix it is to reset the wireless modem and turn off airport on the mbp. does anyone know why this might happen like hardware compitablity or is it a glitch other people are having ?

Likely not useful for most of you - but for anyone who happens to use Juniper Network's Network Connect app for ssl VPN access, here's how to fix post SL install. Apparently, SL messes with perms and removes the 'Frameworks' dir.

I have a Mac Pro which I just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard. I have an HP Multi-Function 2840 hooked up to the router via ethernet. This printer previously worked through Leopard.
Now, my understanding is that for SL, the drivers for this printer are in the operating system and can not be downloaded from HP.
How do I set this up as a network printer? I would like to be able to print from my other computers in the house as well.
Please Note: Snow Leopard only provides drivers for the printing function of this machine. I am going to have to revert to other means to use this device to scan.
My issue with time machine is it says another network is using my id. Now amber light is continuous even after restart, and says I have no dns.
