OS X V10.5 Leopard :: HD Needs To Be Repaired Time Machine Is Failing?
Jul 4, 2012
My mac os x 10.5.8 has been acting very wierd. The other days after restarting it, it would not go past the apple/grey screen. Then i retried while holding (i believe commn, alt, p &R) and it worked. Howevere, my mac has been acting very badly/freezing. I just ran "verify disk" and got the message "first aid failed... the volume Macintosh needs to be repaired".Â
So sicne i figure i should back everything up on my time machine, i just got an error message from time machine saying that it has failed as well. i also do not have my mac osx install disk with me as i moved and it is overseas Â

For the third time in 7 months, Time Machine says it can not do backups because it can not write to the disk. I have also gotten several times the drive is full, even though T M should automatically delete older backup files.Â
When this failure happens I have to re-initialize the drive and let the machine chug away for over 18 hours to create a new backup.Â
I have an external 750 GB FireWire drive that never had failed any backup until I got my new computer with Lion installed in August 2011. The T M back up is currently monitoring over 886,000 files with a total size of over 366 GB.Â
If I recall correctly, T M has to operate on an external drive. I have 3 internal 1TB drives and I could use the third one if it was allowed. Does the external drive only still hold with Lion? It would be nice to have a drive with 25% more capacity to use for T M.

My Time Machine backup is failing... and I'm a little confused as to why. I thought it was supposed to just write over the old backups? Here's a breakdown of what I have going on...Â
-I have two x 1TB WD MyBook's.Â
-I'm using one of them as storage, and the other one as my Time Machine drive. So essentially I'm doing a poor man's RAID. I just want to make sure I have a backup of my data in case the drive dies... and it's too big to back up to a cloud.Â
-The main drive is about half full (Available: 460.49GB)
-The Time Machine drive shows 485.48GB available. Close enough I suppose.Â
The backup is failing with the attached message. Yes, I added more stuff to the drive today (hence the increase in backup size), but why would it need that size all over again? Why wouldn't it just append the exsisting 485GB, and add the new 158GB. Come to think of it, there's no way what I added today increased the size 158GB, so that's strange in itself.Â

My iMac was in the middle of burning a CD on Sunday and spat it out halfway through. Next it was spitting every disc out, including the OS disk at firmware. Anyway, Applecare confirmed the superdrive needed replaced. The machine is only just over a month old (but it is the old top end 3.06GHz model)! So, it went off for repair in perfect order, all packaged up in the original packaging. Based on the advice on others, I also took many photographs before I dropped it off at the repair place. When I picked up the machine today the back of it has been scratched in a number of places. The screen also has loads of dust/debris underneath the glass display.

I understand Time Machine taking a longer time initially when first installed, however my Time Machine seems to always be running, backing up ALL my files each time not just the newer ones. i.e. "it" (Time Machine) is always running.

None of the issues discussed in the apple support page on this issue seem to apply to me (except one below regarding not completing the 'prepare for backup'). It still takes way too much time (a night is not enough) to prepare for time machine backup, even though there was a backup recently, and it is not a one-time event but a recurring problem, and there are no big changes to my files or disks. And of course because most days it does not complete the backup before I have to leave to work, the condition on 'not interrupting the backup' cannot be respected. This looks like plain poor design. The only thing that helps is to connect my laptop directly to the Time Machine by Ethernet but it is very inconvenient.

I've been using my Time Capsule for about 5 months with no major problems. Recently I've had a lot. The last few days I've been having issues with backing up. It would start up and go for a few minutes then I would get a message that the backup has failed due to network interruption. I reset everything multiple time and no luck. I now have it sitting on my desk as a extension of my 802.11g network. Periodically I notice the status light go from solid green to orange and blink for a few seconds then back to green. Would there be anything that would be causing this. I made an appointment Monday to see a Genius. I'm hoping its just a faulty unit that can be replaced.

I want to backup my MacBook Pro and for the first time I tried to use Time Machine on this particular computer. The issue here is that even without any external disc connected I get the same crash error every time I launch it: THE OPERATION COULD NOT BE COMPLETED. An unexpected error occured (error code -43). I thought the issue was the disc partition on my Seagate disc, but after reformatting it I get the same error over and over again. This computer was upgraded a couple of years ago and everything seemed to work out fine until I got this error. I want to backup my computer so I can migrate to a newer one, as well to service this old one.
My Mac is a MacBook Pro 15", with Mac OS 10.5.8.

I recently bought a 1st generation 500GB Time Capsule as I don't need the dual-band functionality of the 2nd Generation. Since setting it up I've been having a problem, whenever my iMac sleeps from a long period of time the backup is delayed when I wake the computer up. This would be less irritating if the backups continued like normal after the computer was awake, but I have to keep re-starting the backups manually to get the backup schedule back on track. This is especially frustrating as the whole point of the system is so I don't have to worry about manual backups.

I have a Macbook, and used Leopard with a Time Machine to backup on an external HD. The internal HD started to fail, so I bought a brand-new internal HD to replace it. I want to restore my machine with the Time Machine backup I have but I have a problem. I lost my Leopard install disk -- I only have my original Tiger install disk that came with my computer. I will partition the new internal HD using the Tiger disk.. So I ask: Will I be able to back-up my files into my new Tiger-OS HD if the back-up was done with Leopard? Can I load my backup files if they were done with a different version of OS?

possible to back up all your data with Time Machine on Leopard and then install Snow Leopard and use Time Machine to restore all of your pictures/movies/music and the like?
I'm going to assume it's a no go since Time Machine is capable of a full system backup -- it may just turn your system back into Leopard?

I am a little new to Time Machine, so I was wondering if anyone could answer this? I am currently using Time Machine to backup my Mac. I am running Leopard and I want to move to Snow Leopard when it comes out. When i get Snow Leopard, I will perform a reformat on my hard drive so its a nice fresh install. My question is what options will I get when I get when I go to install it as I have Time Machine? I'll be honest and say I'll be happy to just copy across my iTunes, iPhoto, contacts and calender over to Snow Leopard and not worry about anything else (stuff like downloading Firefox takes seconds and isn't a problem). Is this an option? Can i just install Snow Leopard totally fresh, then connect the Time Machine drive and copy the iTunes (etc etc) folders/files/docments over to my fresh install?

I just tried and everything seems non-responsive or on a 2 minute delay. I use Time Capsule and Time Machine and things are just not acceptable at this speed.
Also, I don't think the archives are right. I used to have a ton of things on my desktop - most of which I cleaned recently by moving or deleting the files.
However, going back a few months in Time Machine, the only files that show up in my desktop folder/view are the ones that are on my desktop today. All the older, moved or deleted files no longer show up in Time Machine.

I have a Apple Time Capsule which is used as a Time Machine Backup Facility and also a Wireless Hub for File Sharing and Internet Connection. I've been using Leopard for a couple of years without any significant problems. The other day, I installed Snow Leopard and suddenly, I'm facing a number of different problems and errors regarding backups to the Time Machine with the Time Capsule.
First, I was facing problems with a Case Sensitive error and now that I have ejected the Time Capsule, the Disk Utility has come up with a different name altogether and now I have the added problem of disk space on the time capsule. I know I could re-format and start over but that would defeat the whole point of my backups. The Time Machine/Capsule should re-write over the old backups when making space for new ones but its just giving me an error about not enough disk space.

I am nearing the 200GB capacity on my MacBook pro mainly due to 100+GB of home movies that my brother copied onto my computer at Christmas after he converted them all to digital for the family. I have a 1TB external HD that I use once a week to do time machine with to create an identical backup of my MacBook Pro. Is there a way to store these home movies on my external HD and keep them there indefinitely while removing them from my MacBook Pro, but still using time machine each week to back up my MacBook Pro?

My MacBookAir was frozen and was cleaned up in understanding that I can recover all settings and backup from Time Machine. But - password to enter Time Machine network was cleaned up too... It was the first long indusctrial sort of looking password that was given to me by the Time Machin during the process of starting it up. I made a note of it but lost the notebook..

Runnning OSX Leopard 10.5.8 on a G4 tower with 2GB ram, three internal IDE drives and an external USB drive for back ups. I noticed TM is running really slow doing it's backup. I had it running for two days and saw it copied only 3.8GB of 57GB. TM backs up all mounted drives correct? Am I wasting my Time with TM? Is it suppose to run this slow or am I missing something?
