OS X :: Unable;e To Boot From Internal Hard Drive / Use Disk Warrior To Repair Disk?

Apr 11, 2010

I am considering purchasing diskwarrior but want to make sure it can help my situation before I purchase it. My imac will not boot from the internal hard drive (Intel processor) When I use disk utility to try and repair the disk, I get error messages and it won't repair. I can see the HD but cannot repair it. When I connect using target mode with my mac book pro, the hard drive does not appear on my host (macbook pro) computer. I have reloaded OS X (Leopard) onto a firewire external drive and can boot my imac that way but I can not find my original internal Macintosh HD. Will disk warrior be able to help with this scenario. I would really like to access that internal Macintosh HD and retrieve my files.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk (1 Partition) On External Hard Drive

Apr 24, 2012

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!

Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'.  And it needs to be reformatted.  It's become a read only disk.  When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question.  I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969!  These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.

I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure.  Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state!  Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive?  And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

OS X Mavericks :: MacBook Pro Only Turns On In Recovery - Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk

Sep 12, 2014

Macbook Pro running on OSX Mavericks is having problems.

Today I turned my Mac on, and it started up with a loading wheel and a loading bar. When the loading bar finished, the Mac turned itself off. I tried many times, same happened every time. I then went into OSX Recovery, started repairing Macintosh HD, but the error message saying "Disk Utility can't repair Macintosh HD" came up and now I don't now what to do.

Is there any way I can back up my files in this situation? Is there any way I can repair the disk without having to erase all data and reinstalling OSX? Or do I really need to bring it to a Apple Store for repair?

MacBook Pro :: External Hard Drive - Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk

Jun 27, 2014

I have a Seagate 1 TB Backup Plus Drive which was working perfectly fine until I plugged it into a USB hub. It detected it while in the hub and I was able to get files off of it, but when I ejected it from the hub and put it back into the USB slot on the computer it was not detected by finder. It shows up in the disk utility and I clicked verify and repair and it says:

Verify and Repair volume “Seagate Backup Plus Drive”
Checking file system
Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.

Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.

Is there any way to get this to work properly again? Or if not is there a way for me to recover my files on the external hard drive?

I have a Macbook PRO late 2011 running OS X Mavericks.

The utility does not offer me the chance to unlock the partition with my passphrase. How can I repair the filesystem errors on this partition?

MacBook Pro :: Lion On Ssd Crashed - Disk Utility 'cannot Repair The Disk'

Apr 25, 2012

Fortunately I got a time machine backup. And its restoring the drive while in Lion recovery mode. Here's what happened... I dont have a router a my place at the moment and so my two phones (iphone 4 and htc android) connect to my internet using my MBP's wifi via internet sharig. For some reason they were not able to get an IP from the mbp. After doing some wifi swtich toggles and forgettig & rejoining the network, i decided to reboot all my devices. I shut down my modem, phones and restarted my mbp. On reboot, after the chime, it showed an unsusal 'progress bar' under the apple logo. The bar progressed to about 10% and then the mbp just powered off. This happened several times even after PRAM and SMC reset.

So now i booted with cmd+r pressed and in recovery mode ran a 'verify disk'. It said the verification stopped and that i should repair the disk. When i tried to do that it said the disk cannot be repaird and that i should back up as many files as possible and attempt to format the disk and restore it with time machine. It is precisely what im doing at the moment.

1. Mbp wont sleep even when internet sharing is off

2. Mbp wont lit the onboard display upon opening it in clamshell mode until i removed the 3.5mm audio cable of my speakers from the audio out port!

EMac :: Repair Disk Is Dulled Out In Disk Utilities?

Mar 23, 2012

I have a very old E Mac running version OS X version 10.1.5. My Mac is showing a flashing question mark so I have tried to repair it using the Install Disk provided with my E Mac.  Unfortunately, when I insert my Mac OS X Install disk (which is for version 10.1.4) and press the C key at startup and click on Disk Utility the "Repair Disk" button is greyed out (although I am able to Verify the Disk.) How do I get round this problem? (I should add that I have had the flashing question mark once before, and I was able to repair my E Mac on that occasion as I was able at that time to click on the "Repair Disk" button. However, I can no longer do this.)

I have also tried using my OS 9 Install Disk, as I was using OS 9 the last time before the flashing question mark appeared. When I go into Disk Utility using that disk, I am able to click on the "Repair Disk" button but it lists errors that it says it is unable to repair.

MacBook :: Disk Utility Can't Repair Disk

Mar 12, 2012

I just saw that the amount of memory left on my HD just dropped around 60GB, so I used the "Verify Disk" option on Disk Utility, and the output was: Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”Performing live verification.Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.Checking extents overflow file.Checking catalog file.Checking multi-linked files.Checking catalog hierarchy.Checking extended attributes file.Checking volume bitmap.Checking volume information.Volume header needs minor repairThe volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk(such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.

I don't have the disk right now, so is there some other way I can repair it, get another install disk, or anything else? I've been thinking of booting up with a Linux livecd, but can it access the HFS+ filesystem?

Intel Mac :: Disk Utility Cannot Repair Disk

Apr 1, 2012

I'm experiencing some problems with my iMac right now, and I'm not sure how they started or what to do to correct them.

1) Computer seems to hang up from time to time while starting applications, or in the middle of some tasks. There's no rhyme or reason or any patterns.

Question: Is there anything I should try to clean up the computer?

2) About a week ago I started using Time Machine to do scheduled backups rather than me manually starting my own backups. Now whenever time machine does a back up, it seems to stop working somewhere in the "Preparing to Backup" stage, and I end up needing to restart the computer manually because the whole system becomes useless. It will no longer complete any backups, even when I start manually.

Question: Why would time machine now all of the sudden start freezing in the middle of the prep to backup stage?

3) I just tried to use my disk utility to check and see if I need to repair the disk and here is what reported back:

MacBook Pro :: Acting Slow After Repair?

Aug 31, 2010

I just picked up my MBP yesterday from the Apple Store after the display was replaced. I've noticed it's been acting a little slower. For example when I scroll down it lags sometimes (when it never used to), and when I am deleting a word or something it might freeze or take a few seconds to delete. Also on occasion it goes into the spinning wheel which I rarely ever saw before.

OS X :: Macbook Is Slow/Freezing - How To Repair

Jun 9, 2009

To preface this, this is my friends macbook and I'm very unfamiliar with how they work. However, she had dropped her laptop off her bed (i'm not sure how bad of fall it was) , suffice it to say her screen broke and she asked me to fix it. This turned out to be a fairly routine job, save for the hinge that is a total pain to get back on.

On starting the macbook up, the screen/camera work fine but it is moving at a terribly slow rate. I timed it and it took 3 minutes to get to the login screen, 30 seconds to log in and another 2 minutes for her desktop to load. Once loaded, the applications take forever to start, lag terribly and some crash automatically (safari, ichat) despite being connected to network. On top of this, I have tried restarting/shutting down the computer but this freezes and will show the "thinking circle" for an infinite amount of time.

I have tried the disk utility, and it fails to verify the disk. I'm not sure what else to try, as I am unfamiliar with macs. I fear though, that she damaged her hard drive when it dropped, although once again I'm not sure.

MacBook :: Disk Utility Can't Repair 2011 - Saying "disk And Restore Your Backed-up Files"?

Mac Pro :: Need To Repair Disk But Disk Utility Won't Allow?

Feb 3, 2009

I live in France and my nearest authorized dealer is 200 miles away, so I've been on the phone with support a couple of times and gone through various hoops.

Two days ago, my hard drive (or CPU?) started acting up. My Macbook Pro (bought May 07, 2.16 GHz, running 10.4.11) took a long time to boot, and then my desktop image appeared as a fragment along the top of the screen. Various processes started to hang the machine, during which time a repetitive sequence of ticking could be heard from inside the machine until whatever was wrong resolved itself. There were no program crashes and in fact the machine operated fine inbetween these hangs. I ran an extended hardware test, no problems there. Disk Utility, however, would not complete its verification, saying "the underlying task reported failure on exit". It stated that the HD needed to be repaired. However, the "repair disk" button was greyed out, disallowing the repair.

TechTool showed the directory scan failed, as did the volume structure test.

I tried numerous times to Safeboot, but the computer crashed (simply turned off suddenly) midway into the boot each time.

Apple Support had me zap the PRAM, clear the caches, and do that 15-second power-button thing with the battery out. All the log-in items that might have been slowing the boot were removed. This succeeded in getting the machine to boot faster and the desktop image returned.

However, both Verify Disk and TechTool showed the same problems, saying the disk needs to be repaired.

I have since backed everything up and would like to try to resolve this myself rather than driving it to the service centre. What are my next steps? I'd like to somehow avoid a clean install and have to reload everything

Mac Pro :: Ripping DVDs Is Very Slow / TheRipper Is As Slow As Making A Disk Image

Nov 23, 2008

I am copying my DVD collection to the computer to be able to play on an iPod and a mac mini hooked up to the hdtv. Mainly TV shows.I have a Mac Pro with 2 DVD drives. The first one is the original drive (Pioneer DVR-111D) and the second is a Pioneer DVR-116D which I added. I intended to use this 2nd drive mainly for ripping DVDs because I knew I would have to update the firmware to get rid of riplock.

On the DVR-116D drive, I updated the firmware to remove riplock so it would not be limited to 5x read. I have not updated the firmware on the original DVR-111D drive. I am using fairmount to rip the DVD.Under OS X just ripping the DVD to the hard drive takes maybe 20-30 minutes. MacTheRipper is just as slow as is making a disk image using disk utility. I boot into Vista and use DVD Extractor and the same DVD takes 7 or 8 minutes .

Why is it so slow or is there a faster method of ripping a DVD on OS X?
