OS X Leopard :: Hidden Folders (But Not All) Visible After Install
I used this same install disk to install several computers including this laptop without any problems. The same install disk 2 days later is installing over and over with the folders visible, and not all the other hidden items. l have not really checked the filesystem to see if its all folders or not.

My concerns:
Is there a chance this is security related and I have some kind of "swapped" install disk that could have any form of malware built into it? It is troubling to me that the same disk is producing different results days apart. I also don't like the apparently rare nature of this problem nor that it is not fixable using any methods i have found so far. Honestly, I don't want to fix it. I want it not to happen on install or I am going to have questions about its origins, since I have had no problems prior to this.

Can the installation of Linux (specifically use) do something that a Disk Utility wipe would not get rid of such as some kind of open firmware setting (seems impossible to me) or similar vein? The fact that it now appears I cannot install without this happening after 75 installs of it not happening is bothering me.

OS X Leopard :: Certain Folders And Documents - Visible In One Of Spaces?
I was wondering if it is possible to have certain folders and documents on the desktop, which would only be visible in one of my spaces (as opposed to being seen in all of them). I have a folder and a .pdf I use constantly for music, and I want them on the desktop, but I don't want to have to look at it when I am in another non-music space.

OS X Tiger :: Hidden Files Now Visible After Running Disk Utility
I ran disk utility the other day and it couldn't complete due to errors. Since then I ran applejack which ran to completion. After that disk utility will run to completion with no errors. My issue is that now the invisible files show up (.DS_store). Also, the icons in the preferences window have changed. Most of them now look like a light switch with the upper right corner folded down and the original icon shows up in a miniature size on the lower left corner.

IMac :: External Drive Visible But Hidden Folder Not Shown In OS X
I'm not sure if this qualifies as a hardware issue or a software one. I recently swapped out from a PC to a iMac. I wanted to keep all my old files so I pulled out the internal HDD and placed it in a HDD Enclosure and connected it via USB 2.0. Now the Mac recognized it and all seemed well, but a hidden folder I need access to doesn't show up on my drive. If it helps, this drive was the master drive on my old PC and the file I'm trying to locate was on the desktop.

Final Cut Pro :: Always Render After Making Video Visible / Hidden?
I've spent more time rendering than actually working on this project. I'm cutting together a music video that has 3 takes. The video is layered one track on top of the other, with the only audio being the guide track. Since I can only view one video track at a time, I have to make them visible on and off. However, every time I do, it needs me to render the entire video again. Which has naturally, become rather time consuming. I've done a lot of videos, and this hasn't happened before.

Snow Leopard :: Hidden Folders Unable To Open / Show
I used finder to copy tons of files to my NAS (Synology). This worked more or less well. Those files are used/modified from both Windows and Mac Computers. Now when I access those directories from Mac, I see in finder a some folders greyed, and hence not accessible anymore. Using Terminal I looked at the permissions and attributes which looked ok for me. The Invisible Attribute is not set. I saw that on all those directories the attribute "com.apple.FinderInfo" was set. I deleted those attributes with actually no effect. What else could I try to access those directories/files again? By the way - In other programs, like ForkLift or PathFinder I can see and access those files normally.

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Make Smb Mount Visible To All Users?
We have a Macintosh OS10.6 server and a big storage system accessible via SMB.

I can mount the partition using mount_smbfs or mount -t smbfs. The problem is that only the user who executes the mount command can access files on the share. We want them accessible to all users (ideally through a common UID).

It there any straightforward way to mount so that all users will be able to access the files?

OS X Technologies :: AppleScript - Count Only Visible Folders
How can one count only visible folders (one level down only) in the Finder?

The following script works fine except that it appears to count some invisible folders eg: when the selection is the startup disk the count is 6 although the actual number of visible folders is only 4. tell application "Finder"          set vSelection to selection as alias  count every folder of folder vSelectionend tell

I have tried various ideas such as "whose visible is true" but to no avail.

Assuming it is possible to perform a successful visible folder count, how could one then move between these visible folders in the Finder prior to performing a command (eg: open)?

OS X :: Rant Over Hidden Files And Folders
Namely: Library and its contents. If Windows can do it, I'm confident Leopard 10.5.6 can too. None of the myriad permutations of the below Terminal command work.

Code:
# defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool TRUE
# KillAll Finder
When I "search this Mac" in the Finder or querry Spotlight, I want nothing but nothing excluded from results. I am not a computer retard in danger of ruining my OS through hasty file relocation or deletion. I want my search returns to include even the most sensitive system files which, if accidentally deleted, would cause my Mac Pro to reach out through my monitor and stab me in the face.

Folder example: There are several folders called "Mozilla" on my system, and yours if you use Firefox. Good luck finding a folder called "Mozilla" using the Finder or Spotlight. You'll have to know where it is and manually navigate there.

File example: I have a file called userChrome.css buried in users/me/Library/AS/Mozilla/ext/yadaYoda, But when I search for "userChrome.css" - Mac OS peers out at me through it's glowing red eye and says, very calmly, "What are you doing Dave? I can't let you do that Dave."

Can anyone tell me how to really & truly include ALL files and folders in searches? I'll reiterate that I've tried a dozen terminal commands I found online.

MobileMe / IDisk :: Some Folders Not Visible In Public Folder?
I've just started using iDisk. Within my Public folder, there's a folder with four sub-folders. If I click on the little arrow beside the parent folder, the arrow turns and the four sub-folders are visible. This works fine for me when looking at iDisk on the web, using either Safari or Firefox on my Mac. I have given access to my fellow choir members but the altos complain they can't see their folder! Of the four sub-folders, it is the first alphabetically. When others (presumably using Windows computers) click the little arrow, it turns but only reveals 3 of the 4 sub-folders. They found that if they double-click the parent folder, all four sub-folders are visible!!! What could be going on here?

OS X Tiger :: Using Hidden Folders And Files / How Can I Unhide Them
I have a file folder that is suddenly hidden from Finder. It was fine last week and the previous year or two that I have accessed that folder. I can still find and open it using Spotlight, and I see the correct path displayed, but when I navigate that path in Finder, the files/folders are not visible.

Why is it hiding? None of the discussions I've read about hidden files helped explain or solve the issue. It happened with an Excel spreadsheet file a few months ago, and I was able to unhide that one with the "Hidden Files" widget. Do I really need to venture into Terminal?

I'm on an iMac G5 with OSX 10.4.11.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Make The Users' Library Visible?
For a variety of reasons I want to make the Users' Library visible. The main reason is that I want to Import the Safari bookmarks into Opera. I can't do that because the Users' Library is invisible.

If I enter Safari into Spotlight I can find the folder okay but that is useless for my purpose. It's okay if I want to transfer Bookmarks to a new computer or external drive but not for importing the Safari bookmarks to Opera.

It used to be visible, I don't know why, it just appeared out of the ether. Since I have updated the OS it has vanished again. Never could understand why the folder was made invisible anyway.

OS X Leopard :: To Make A Structured Set Of Folders In Automator
I'm after quite a unique folder structure - I want to be able to build automatically from scratch every week (to save me doing it by hand.

The structure should look like this (but probably a lot more):
computer.CFB.001.Dave/Originals/
computer.CFB.002.Chris/Originals/
computer.CFB.003.Ann/Originals/
computer.CFB.004.Paul/Originals/

So the main folder has two changeable things, the 001 and the name afterwards, the rest of the structure is constant.

At the moment, this is what I have (based on only 2 names):

new folder
new folder
Ask for Finder items (allow multiple entries, and directory chosen)
Rename Finder items (making sequential, using the numbers starting 001 etc)
Ask for Finder items (allow multiple entries, and directory chosen)
Rename Finder items (add text 'computer.CFB.' to beginning)

So if I run that, I can get all the folders to show up and it works BUT I get extra duplicated folders inside those folders - I'm not sure why this is happening.Next step is that I need to individually add the names (chris, ann etc), so I want it add this to the end of the filename (but I would like a prompt so that I can write in each one - I don't see any other way around this apart from typing them in a prompt). If this can't be done, I'll just have to rename the folders by hand (but with over 100 people that could be hard work). Then lastly, how can I add an 'Originals' folder into each of those folders?

Snow Leopard :: Mail Does Not Check All IMAP Folders / Make It Possible?
I use Mail.app with an IMAP server that has some server side mail rules. So, often, new mail will appear in some other folder besides the INBOX.

The problem: Mail.app does not seem to check all these folders if I leave it running.

Sometimes it does detect unread mail, but more often it doesn't. I have to click on "Synchronize" to reliably download all the unread mail.

Is there a fix to this?

When I google, some of the latest fixes are an AppleScript which forces a synchronize in the background, but that is from 2004 and I'm not sure if I would break stuff by running it now.

OS X Leopard :: To Make Folders Stay Collapsed In List View In Finder?
if there is a way to make folders stay collapsed next time you open that particular folder (like they used to in tiger)

let me explain this in more detail

back in tiger, when you were in list mode, when you press right arrow on a folder it was expanding its contents, but the next time you open that folder those folders were collapsed, whereas in leopard it remembers the folders you expanded and they stay expanded forever (or until you collapse them all again manually)

i think its a lot more logical for them to stay collapsed next time you're opening that folder because if you have a lot of subfolders and they're all expanded when you open the folder next time its huge, the side scroller bar is tiny and its very difficult to find your stuff

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: How To Make Sub Folders Invisible To Certain Users
Back in the 10.3 days simply setting the posix permissions so that certain users and groups had no access to a sub folder in a shared folder would make the folder invisible to those users and groups. Flash forward to Snow Leopard, I'm trying to accomplish the same thing with ACLs, and I can't seem to do it, the folders are still visible with access denied badges. I read the ACL white paper that was on AFP548, and that suggested creating a deny full control ACE for groups that shouldn't have access, but that no longer seems to work the folders are still visible. I've been fiddling with different ACL configurations, but I can't seem to get it to work. I am running Mac OS X Server 10.6.4, and the clients are 10.6.4 as well.
