OS X Leopard :: System Preferences Won't Save After Change / What To Do?
I am running Mac OS 10.5.8 on a Black Macbook. The problem I am having is that none my changes will save in the system preferences. For example. I change the desktop background but the background won't change. The display window in the systems preferences window will show the picture I chose, but the desktop won't.

Another example: if I turn off "spaces" in systems preferences. It will show as off in the system preferences window, but as soon as I close the system preferences window, the changes won't take affect. This seems to happen with any change to settings in the system preferences.

I have recently used both "disk warrior" and Onyx to rebuild my desktop, check my drive and everything else those applications do. But still no change.

One more hint: I deleted an application (TomTom home) from my computer a few months ago, but the old icon shows up in the Dock as a "?" after each restart. I can drag it ot the desktop and delete it, but if I restart it will always show up.

What could be wrong? Should I do a reinstall? I don't have the disks.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Network Preferences Won't Open After I Had RAM Replaced
My computer just got back from the shop (in Vienna, im studying abroad till august) because my computer wouldnt start up anymore after crashing multiple times. They replaced the RAM and said that they couldn't get airport to work. but that wasnt exactly the whole story. Network Preferences apparently doesnt exist anymore. I've tried to locate the bits that should be resettable, and I've tried a PRAM restart. still no network settings, and no internet at all. Super frustrating since i just picked him up today.

OS X Leopard :: System Preferences Won't Launch From Apple Menu In Mac OS X 10.5.8
I recently upgraded to 10.6 and then went back to 10.5.5 in a few hours.

When doing so, I chose to save a folder called "Previous System", as the Installer gave me this option.

I've upgraded to 10.5.8 via Software Update, after prior 10.5.5 installation through the DVD.

At some point, I tried to launch the System Preferences through Apple menu and got the familiar message: "The application quit unexpectedly, etc.". Since then it's a recurrent problem. It's been 3 days.

However, it does open from the dock icon.

I still have the "Previous System" folder on my disk. I've moved a few things from it to my Library (i.e. some minor applications like Skype, some Desktop items like documents and folders, some photos, music, etc.). I've pretty much started from scratch with everything else - Finder preferences, Wacom tablet driver, etc.

OS X V10.4 :: Can't Open Accounts In System Preferences
I'm running Mac OS 10.4.11 on an iBook and for some reason, when I select Accounts in the System Preferences, I get nothing but a blank screen. I can't manage the accounts since I can't see the accounts to manage or any of the settings. I threw away the cache and restarted System preferences to see if that would help. It says "Loading Accounts..." but it never loads the that system preference. If I click it again, it comes up blank again and the cache is regenerated. This machine was purchased used and I don't have the OS disks to relaod the system.

ICloud Won't Let Me Sign Out Of System Preferences
I've recently installed Lion and moved to iCloud. I have iCal set up with iCloud and it syncs with my iPad.In the iCloud System Prefs Pane, which I'd not looked at before, I have Calendars ticked, but when I click on Sign Out, I get a message telling me: "If you stop using iCloud for Calendars and Reminders, calendars and reminders stored in iCloud will be removed from this Mac."This seems to me to indicate that the message generator can't see my tick next to Calendars. Or is it that one isn't meant to sign out in this Pref Pane.?

Aperture :: Custom Keyboard Shortcuts Don't Work Until I Open System Preferences
I have assigned a shortcut (Option+A) to "Auto Enhance" in Aperture 3.

It doesn't actually work unless I open up System Preferences, click "Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts" and then click "Application Shorcuts." I can see that the custom shortcut is still in place.

As if by magic, Aperture suddenly starts to recognize the shortcut again, and I don't have to go 3 menus down (or open the Adjustments tab and scroll down) to use Auto Enhance.

This has happened countless times, through multiple reboots.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: System Preferences Won't Launch
2011 Core i7 iMac with Lion. Noticed yesterday that system prefs won't launch. No spinning beachball, does absolutely nothing including no launch animation. tried resetting the SMC, followed by booting into disk utilities and doing repair permissions. Then did a reinstall of Lion, again from the disk utilities boot. Not sure if I was at 10.7.3 or 10.7.4 before all this, but reinstall got me back to 10.7.3, updated to 10.7.4, problem persists with both.

I just noticed this is only with the main admin account. There is one secondary account on the computer that my kids use - if I switch to it I am able to access system prefs.

OS X Tiger :: System Preferences & Software Update Won't Launch From Apple Menu
I recently upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 and then changed back to 10.4.11

When it was installed (from a Universal retail not the DVD that came with the mac) I copied all the folders from "Previous System" and replaced the newly made ones.

At some point I was using System Preferences when it vanished with the usual message "Closed unexpectedly, reopen, close etc". Since then neither System Preferences nor Software Update will launch from the apple menu. System Preferences will, however, open from the dock.

When they are clicked on the hard drive makes some noise and then stops and nothing appears.

OS X Tiger :: Classic Won't Start / No Classic Preference Pane In System Preferences
Recently Classic will not open. OSX 10.4.11 I have searched the discussions and not found a problem quite like this. The preference pane for Classic has disappeared from System Preferences. OS 9 is fine however, as the OS9 system folder is blessed and I can boot from it. I then thought maybe the preference pane was corrupted or something, but this does not seem to be the case b/c I also have a secondary mirrored hard drive that I update with SuperDuper and when I boot from this hard drive I can start Classic using OS9 from either the secondary hard drive or the primary hard drive. In addition if I replace/write over the OS9 Classic preference pane (Primary Hard drive/System/Library/PreferencePanes/Classic Preference Pane with one I know is good and works from the secondary mirrored hard drive and then reboot into OSX10.4.11 on the primary hard drive, the Classic preference pane still does not show up in system preferences and so I cannot start Classic. This seems to have started after I wanted to do some maintenance on a Canon 850inkjet printer. The driver for this printer in OSX doesn't seem to have the options for aligning the print heads etc so I went into Classic to do that. I did read somewhere about some problems with Classic and Apple Talk so I guess it is possible I changed something having to do with AppleTalk when I was fixing the printer. It was about this time that I started having trouble starting Classic. I have not mirrored my secondary hard drive with SuperDuper for a while b/c at least I can still open Classic from it. Any suggestions other than re-installing the entire OSX system? (permissions have been verified and repaired)

OS X Leopard :: MPB 17 - Open - "system"
I have run into a bit of issue it seems. I have MBP 17 that has a Envision 20 inch LCD that is connected via the DVI of the MBP. This works fine, as a matter of fact it is what I am using to view this forum and type on. However, the issue is that my screen on the MBP 17 has gone south and no longer provides any display.

What I have been doing as of late is "fishing" for applications in the main display (the MBP) and hoping to get lucky to snag one with the mouse pointer. So far I have been able to get Mozilla and Terminal (or anything else started by command line) I have been trying to "fish" out the system preferences from the MBP from the Envision display for a few hours. I am thinking to get the system preferences open and change the display positions and move Display #1 from the Laptop LCD to the external Envision LCD. This way I can burn all my files prior to sending the Laptop in for repair. So far, "ps" shows me that "system" is started, I was wondering then if there was a possibility to modify manually some config file like what a X-windows would have.

MacBook :: Internet Says Have Internet But Wont Connect - Cannot Open System Preferences Or Internet Preferences
I have a macbook a little over a year old. It's my first mac and I love it. Yesterday though it started acting really weird. I first noticed that it was really, really hot and the fan was running. I turned it off and back on and here's what I found out:

Applications are being deleted from macbook. ITunes, IPhoto, iChat have clear question marks over icon. There are 8-10 blank spaces in the Applications folder where applications have been deleted. However, data is still there (ex. pictures still there, but no iPhoto).

Internet= Says I have internet but wont connect.

Cannot open " System Preferences" or "Internet Preferences".

If connected to home computer will connect to internet and allowed to open internet preferences but still no system preferences.

If shut down....takes a while to come back on and starts up 2-3 times.

Also "Preview" is gone. Now " ColorSync Utility" opens.

Is this my hard drive dying? I'm tech challenged, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
