OS X Leopard :: How To Repair, Recover A DMG File Not Recognized

i unfortunately kept many large backups in the form of .dmg or disk image files. i stored these on an external hard drive, accessible over the network. sometimes they were connected to a mac, sometimes my airport extreme base station (original square white one).

many if not all of these dmg files are now unable to be opened. disk image mounter or disk utility reports them as "not recognized"

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Disk Image .DMG Unable To Mount / Attach - Not Recognized?
After a fatal mac crash (PPC 10.5) i had no option but to reinstall the OS (10.5), i obviously didnt reformat the drive in the hope that i would be able to recover some if not all of my data. Using various tools i was happily able to recover most of my data successfully, including 3 AES encrypted Disk images of around 30GB in size each.

I didn't hold out much hope for actually recovering the data inside the dmgs, although after some fiddling i was able to recover 2 of them fully after receiving the no mountable file system error, i dont know how i done it but nonetheless i dont appear to have lost any data from those two dmgs whatsoever. Now the third dmg (also about 30GB in size) never gave me the no mountable file system error and instead returns the error: unable to mount: not recognized. Im pretty sure that my data is still there somewhere due to the sheer size of the recovered file, tied with the fact of the success of the recovery of the other 2 disk images. I have read every post i could find on this site and have trawled the web tirelessly looking for a solution to this, but have yet to find anything that even comes close - the closest i have found was a post on this forum where it would appear an apple engineer was able to recover most of the data using some sort of magic.

I am not in a position to pay for professional data recovery and besides i would love to see a solution to this problem appear somewhere on the web. I have tried the usual, rebuilding permissions, mounting on another machine (imac G5), resizing with disk util, repairing with disk warrior, converting to ISO - all which return the same error - not recognized! I have tried every terminal command i have found on the web, although decyphering some of the information is a little out of my remit and my knowledge of HEX is limited. I haven't yet tried Toast, basically because i dont have a copy, but it would be my guess that this would return a similar result. Incidentally when i recovered the original data, there were some small (what appeared to be dmgs) files around only maybe a few Kb each with part of the file names of the original files, i'm guessing these maybe the headers or something like that? although i didn't have to do anything with them to get the other 2 disk images working again.

OS X Leopard :: Repair Disk Permissions - Error (File System Verify Or Repair Failed)
Today I installed some software and then ran 'repair disk permissions' to check that all was in order - which it was. However, my finger slipped (I actually find the new trackpad quite inaccurate from time to time but I guess that's my fault)- instead of closing Disk Utility I clicked on Verify Disk. I thought I would let it run its course ... imagine my surprise when this was the result ..

OS X Leopard :: DMG Image - No Mountable File Systems
I had Mac OS X Leopard running with Boot Camp (Windows Vista). I needed extra space for my Mac OS so I deleted the Windows partition using the Boot Camp Assistant. Then, I shut down the computer, but after I turned it on, there was the flashing question mark, which meant that the computer couldn't recognize the Macintosh operating system that was installed. Therefore, I put in the Mac OS Install Disk, and tried to repair the disk but it said invalid BS_jmpBoot in block 000000.

Seeing this, I decided to reinstall Mac OS X, but backing up with Disk Utility: Create New Compressed .DMG Image before doing so. After a successful installation, I tried to mount the image, but it says No Mountable File System. I feel hopeless, because all of my precious data was backed up in that disk image. When I try to verify or repair that disk using Disk Utility, it says Unrecognized File System. Are all the files on that image corrupt and impossible to recover, or is it possible to recover those files (but of course, losing some files, since the image appears to be corrupt).

OS X Leopard :: .dmg File On The Internet That Changed The Icons In Menubar
OK, so I stumbled onto a .dmg file on the internet that changed the icons in the menubar and I thought that would be kind of cool so I gave it a try. It was fine for a week or so but with most things in my life I grew tired of it and decided to give it the boot.

But alas, it was more difficult than that, there were no simple ways to uninstall it. So I did some research and found that I had to change the Menu Extras in System-Library-CoreServices. So i tried that and now my menubar is lacking the time, the airport icon, and the battery life so needless to say it makes using my computer slightly less enjoyable.

OS X Leopard :: How To Recover Temp File From Time Machine
I had some information in a Word doc, that I had not yet "saved" under a file name. I inadvertently closed the Word doc, prior to saving it. I did have this single Word page open for several hours, so I am "assuming" that it was captured in one of the hourly Time Machine back-ups.

My questions are:
1) Would Time Machine have saved this, even as a Temporary File?
2) If so, how do I get at it, and pull it up? Being new to the Mac world, I do not even know what directories to look in.

My system is Leopard 10.5.7, and Word 2008.

OS X Leopard :: Recover Deleted .AVI File From A User's Desktop?
Downloaded a video file from Camera flash card directly onto the desktop of a user account set up with FileVault Protection

File was deleted from desktop and Trash emptied (but not using secure empty)

Tried using Data Recovery 3 and TechTool Pro 5 to recover data from Mac HD but to no avail

The closest I've got to achieving a recovery is via the beta version of Disk Drill as I was able to use that to try a data recovery from the Camera's flash card. However, after recovering the file onto an external HD and trying to play it, I get a message that it's not a movie file. This is despite the fact that it still has the .AVI extension and icon with the correct filename. However, the recovered file is 1.09GB in size, so I figure there must be some video data in there somewhere?

Have just downloaded Boomerang Data Recovery and it also sees the file on the Camera's flash card, but I can't recover it without purchasing an activation code and I'm not prepared to spend the hefty $99 without knowing if it's going to work.

OS X Leopard :: How To Globally Repair File/folder Permissions
I recently did a CLEAN install of Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro -- yes, Clean. Erased drive with Disk Utility and installed a fresh OS. Then, using Time Machine, restored all my apps and work files. All went well. But now the OS is forcing me to fix permissions on EVERY SINGLE FILE AND FOLDER I TRY TO OPEN, MOVE, COPY, EDIT, SAVE. Probably because in the Clean install I did not copy over my old User Settings. I wanted to start from SCRATCH! Disk Utility, of course, does not fix such global permissions fixes. I have to go into each item, choose CMD-I (get info), click on the "Sharing and Permissions" triangle. In nearly all cases, I see only the following "Names" listed: system, everyone. Both say "read only." So I click the ADD button, and offered the opportunity to add "administrators" or my particular user name. In many cases, adding "administrators" works because I am the administrator, of course.

Snow Leopard :: Recover Files Or Entire Home Through Time Machine With File Vault On?
I have file vault on when setup the time machine, everyday I usually shutdouwn my computer, that means it should backup my home folder.

Yesterday I found problems with some files and are planning to recover by timemachine, can't do that!

I was trying to make some research and find that time machine don't work to well with file vault on, but it's possible to recover. Some people said about turn file vault off and use the time machine, some people said that the only way its to recover the whole home folder....

I tried to go directly to the time machine drive and see what its inside, found the day that should be possible to recover, but on the user folder only can see the share folder inside....

I don't know if the home folder was backuped or was the view restriction provided by file vault on.

I read where it is good to save an iDVD project as a .dmg file so that burning it again later will be faster. I have done that with a project. Now I want to burn more copies, and just wanted to ask how to do this. Do I open iDVD and burn it from there? Or can I use Toast? If so, what setting? Or can I just drag the .dmg file onto a mounted DVD? I will want it to play on a standard DVD player, and for PC users to have access to the photo files that are included. It works fine that way when I have just used iDVD to burn it.
