OS X Leopard :: System Preferences Won't Launch From Apple Menu In Mac OS X 10.5.8

I recently upgraded to 10.6 and then went back to 10.5.5 in a few hours.

When doing so, I chose to save a folder called "Previous System", as the Installer gave me this option.

I've upgraded to 10.5.8 via Software Update, after prior 10.5.5 installation through the DVD.

At some point, I tried to launch the System Preferences through Apple menu and got the familiar message: "The application quit unexpectedly, etc.". Since then it's a recurrent problem. It's been 3 days.

However, it does open from the dock icon.

I still have the "Previous System" folder on my disk. I've moved a few things from it to my Library (i.e. some minor applications like Skype, some Desktop items like documents and folders, some photos, music, etc.). I've pretty much started from scratch with everything else - Finder preferences, Wacom tablet driver, etc.

OS X Tiger :: System Preferences & Software Update Won't Launch From Apple Menu
I recently upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 and then changed back to 10.4.11

When it was installed (from a Universal retail not the DVD that came with the mac) I copied all the folders from "Previous System" and replaced the newly made ones.

At some point I was using System Preferences when it vanished with the usual message "Closed unexpectedly, reopen, close etc". Since then neither System Preferences nor Software Update will launch from the apple menu. System Preferences will, however, open from the dock.

When they are clicked on the hard drive makes some noise and then stops and nothing appears.

OS X Tiger :: Unable To Launch System Preferences From Apple Menu
My System Preferences opens from the dock and from Finder, but not from the Apple menu.

Here's the read out from Console:

Mar 8 17:14:01 david-cains-computer crashdump10475: crash report written to: /Users/davidcain/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/System Preferences.crash.log

I tried erasing com.apple.systempreferences.plist and relaunching Sys Pref from the Apple menu but without success.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: System Preferences Won't Launch
2011 Core i7 iMac with Lion. Noticed yesterday that system prefs won't launch. No spinning beachball, does absolutely nothing including no launch animation. tried resetting the SMC, followed by booting into disk utilities and doing repair permissions. Then did a reinstall of Lion, again from the disk utilities boot. Not sure if I was at 10.7.3 or 10.7.4 before all this, but reinstall got me back to 10.7.3, updated to 10.7.4, problem persists with both.

I just noticed this is only with the main admin account. There is one secondary account on the computer that my kids use - if I switch to it I am able to access system prefs.

OS X Leopard :: System Profiler Won't Launch
I don't often use System Profiler but recently I tried to and it wouldn't launch - neither from the 'more info' button in the 'About this Mac' window, nor when I tried directly double-clicking on the application itself. The icon seems to expand for a fraction of a second as if it was going to launch, and then collapses back to normal again.

I have probably downloaded a few system updates since I last used System Profiler - could one of these be the problem? I have tried resetting the PRam with no effect.

OS X Leopard :: Mouse Preferences Missing From System Preferences Menu?
I have a G5 PowerMac (PowerPC processor) running 10.5.8. I just picked up a new Magic Mouse today and checked the mouse options to enable scrolling, only to find the "Mouse tab" under the Keyboard & Mouse menu missing. I've got Keyboard, Bluetooth, and Keyboard Shortcuts and nothing else.

I've delted the Systempreference.plist file.... and nothing. Anyone else have any suggestions?

This isn't a case of the System Preference not being found, being moved out of the Applications Folder, or anything trivial like that. System Preferences will not launch. This is a clean install of Leopard, and updated to 10.5.8. The error message in console is.

Software :: Safari Won't Launch On My MacBook - Leopard Operating System
I have a MacBook; purchased in Oct. 2006. All has been working fine until yesterday. Safari suddenly shut down and when I tried to relaunch, the icon on the toolbar jumps a couple of times (teasing me as if he is going to launch) and then doesn't open. I did get it to "almost" launch a couple of times and it never opened my home page. It instead, within seconds, it shut down and I got the error message that the application suddenly quit but that my operating system wasn't affected, etc. All of my Office applications work fine but Safari will just not launch..

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Java Apps Won't Run, Java Preferences Won't Launch
Since the flurry of 2012 updates, Java is completely broken on my Mac Pro.  Java dependent apps don't start and Apple Support says to enable the apps in Java Preferences. Nice idea, but Java Preferences WILL NOT LAUNCH either. There were plenty of tools to address flashback and they DID NOT break normal day to day operations.I downloaded the package from support to try a re-installation, but it says "A newer version of Java is already installed" and offers me the option to Close. No reinstall, nothing. Apple support is at it's usual level of service on this issue, completely INVISIBLE.

Power Mac G5 :: Address Book Won't Launch After Re-installing System.
I just installed a new HD and made a nice clean install of system, starting with original that came with my 1st edition G5 Tower and then upgraded to 10.3, then to 10.4.11 (which is where I stop), performing the Apple Software updates along the way. Everything seems to be fine. Boots extremely fast, just like when it was a baby.

Everything except Address Book. I had been importing e-mails, etc. from my 2nd HD so that I could erase it and went to import from my old Address Book and it won't launch. Does the little animation in the Dock, but immediately quits. If I try to open it through Mail, it immediately kills the Mail application.

I really don't want to have to go through the lengthy installation process again. Does anone have any thoughts as to what might be causing this? Even the version of Address Book on my 2nd HD is doing the same thing.

OS X Leopard :: System Preferences Won't Save After Change / What To Do?
I am running Mac OS 10.5.8 on a Black Macbook. The problem I am having is that none my changes will save in the system preferences. For example. I change the desktop background but the background won't change. The display window in the systems preferences window will show the picture I chose, but the desktop won't.

Another example: if I turn off "spaces" in systems preferences. It will show as off in the system preferences window, but as soon as I close the system preferences window, the changes won't take affect. This seems to happen with any change to settings in the system preferences.

I have recently used both "disk warrior" and Onyx to rebuild my desktop, check my drive and everything else those applications do. But still no change.

One more hint: I deleted an application (TomTom home) from my computer a few months ago, but the old icon shows up in the Dock as a "?" after each restart. I can drag it ot the desktop and delete it, but if I restart it will always show up.

What could be wrong? Should I do a reinstall? I don't have the disks.

OS X :: System Preferences Hanging On Launch?
Ever since I installed Snow Leopard, every so often when I try opening System Preferences, it just keeps bouncing and never opens and says it's not responding. If I force quit and reopen, it'll suddenly open on first bounce. This happened on 10.6.0 and 10.6.1.

For context, I installed SL clean on my iMac Core Duo. The only 3rd party apps in System Prefs is Backblaze, Flip4Mac, GeekTool, Growl, iStat Menus, and Perian. All are up to date.

OS X :: Getting The Pinwheel Every Time - Launch System Preferences?
For the past month, every time a launch system preferences it takes several seconds to load. Then, when I go into desktop/screensaver it takes a long time to load. So I open activity monitor, and when system preferences is open, its using 22mb but as soon as I open desktop/screensaver, it shoots up to 735mb and goes to 45% on the user usage. I hope this makes sense. I'm not sure if this is normal or if my ram is going bad.

OS X Leopard :: System Preferences Ignores Choices, Will Not Display Info In Menu Bar
I started up my Macbook Pro today, and the Time, Airport, and Bluetooth info. had all vanished from my menu bar. I went into System Preferences to put them back. I am able to check the appropriate boxes in system preferences, but this still does not cause the selected items to appear in the menu bar. Slightly scarier - my choices in System Preferences un-select themselves the instant I navigate away from them. Even if I select the option to "lock" my preferences, they disappear.

Hoping to fix the problem, I just downloaded and installed every system update available (including updating OS from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8), but that didn't solve anything.

I think this same problem might extend to other system preferences settings, because at the same time the menu bar problem started, I began to have minor display problems with my 3rd party monitor. Haven't had time yet to go through every single system setting to see how extensive the problem is, but it seems like a lot of different things became "slightly off" at the same time my menu bar problems started.

Mac Bluetooth :: Menu Missing Under System Preferences Possibly Due To SL?
I have a Mac Mini, Intel Solo Core. Has Bluetooth, and was using it for a while when I got my Mini, under Leopard. Upgraded to Snow Leopard a few months ago. I am now realizing that the Bluetooth menu under System Preferences is missing, not sure when that happened. My bluetooth aluminum keyboard first started not fully working (the Function buttons lost their Play/Rewind/Volume etc commands, but I could still type).

Just installed the latest update that was just made available to me, and now WHAM, I have no keyboard. I've trashed the Bluetooth pref file in my library, tried resetting the SMC.
