Using time machine, how do I restore my entire hard drive to the way it was last week? I can recover individual files and folders but I want to restore everything in one go.

My optical drive spits out any disk you put in it. I think it is a software not a hardware problem. I want to use Time Machine to restore my entire system to a time when my drive worked (2 weeks ago). Is it possible to do this from an external hard drive and without using the optical drive? Mac Pro :: Transferring Entire Os And Applications From One Hdd To Another
im looking to get a 10,000rpm velociraptor drive and transport all of my current apps and osx from the standard 320 gb drive to the velociraptor. how would i go about doing this? would i need to save everything on an external drive and then transfer it to the velociraptor? or could i just insert the velociraptor into drive bay 2 and then drag everything from the 320 gb hdd in drive bay 1 onto the velociraptor? ive never installed an os on a computer before so this might sound like a dumb question but any information that you might have would be helpful.

Aperture :: Backing Up Images On External HDD And Restoring To New Internal HDD?
I recently purchased a new external hard drive and a new internal hard drive. Before installing the new internal drive, I backed up the old internal drive on the external drive. Then I installed the new internal drive to my Macbook Pro. However, when I tried to access and print my Aperture images on the new internal drive, I received an error message saying "versions with unavailable master images cannot be printed." I clicked on 'show referenced files," but couldn't determine how to recover my master images. I checked the forum and under "referenced files go offline after restore from a backup" it said to go to "File>manage referenced files" but nothing else. How can I recover my master images? OS X Leopard :: Restoring Second Internal HDD From Time Machine
I have a second internal hard drive for media files that I have backed up with time machine, in addition to my main first drive. I switched out this drive for a larger one and want to restore the files on the second drive only, without effecting those on my main drive. I tried going into time machine and pulling in the past copy of the smaller drive into the larger drive but this said it would take 54 hours last night, and 50 when I woke up this morning. Information: Powerpc G5 Mac OS X (10.5)

OS X Leopard :: Restore Time Machine After Restoring HDD?
My iMac HD crashed and the good news is I was using Time Machine and it appears to have done an excellent job of restoring the drive. However, it is now trying to do a "full backup" onto the drive that already has the TM data so of course there is no room. Apple support describes this as normal behavior, but to me "normal" would be allowing me to pick up where I left off as if the drive had never failed. Information: Imac 24" Mac OS X (10.5.7)

Windows On Mac :: Restoring Time Machine Backup From External HDD?
Okay I've had it with VMware Fusion 3, tried Parallels. The graphics capabilities are poor for my standard of work (we use 3DS Max and Maya for intensive modelling during studies). I know my graphics card is quite outdated (ATI X1600) but a lot of the graphics-intensive apps on the Mac side run very smooth. So I'm going down the Boot Camp route since graphics-wise, it'll use the actual X1600 instead of some virtual one. It's telling me that I need to reformat into Mac OS Journaled or something, and some basic research tells me the only way to achieve this is a fresh install. My question is, if I perform a Time machine backup onto my external drive, will it restore the applications/settings/files completely how they were, after I reinstall OS X?

OS X :: Changed Permissions For Entire HDD
I right clicked on my Macintosh HD icon, chose get info, then changed permission to read & write, and applied it to all enclosed items. Then I restarted my MacBook and it wouldn't boot. It would just hang on the Apple logo boot screen with the spinning thing. So I did some research online and saw that I would have to wipe my whole hard drive and start over since I applied read & write to all enclosed items. I put the OSX disk in, and booted to it. Before I went to install a fresh copy of OSX, I tried to repair disk permissions instead. To my delight, it worked. I was able to boot like normal. But now I am having some strange problems. -When I load Firefox, the bouncing icon will be all jumpy. -When I log into Skype, the log in sound will only play halfway. -The most weird and major problem is the no setting will save at all. If I add a new bookmark in either Safari or Firefox, then quit and reopen the program, it will not be there. If I change my home page, the setting won't save after I quit out. If I remove something from my OSX dock, then log out then log back in, it will be back.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Restoring HDD Via Clone Image
I've been trying to partition my drive to use bootcamp for the past 3 days now. I've done this before with ease and let me just say Apple (usually) makes this very simple.  I have 10.7, all updated and working properly with no disk errors (repaired/verified). Disk Utility won't partition my 500gb HDD into a 100gb windows partition along with a ~400gb OSX one, says some files cannot be moved. So everything I've read says to image the HDD (image saved on USB external terrabyte), restore to it via disk utility on boot from the image, and then to partition. I created the image of Mac OSX successfully and saved it on the external. I rebooted and got into Disk Utility, selected the image in the left column, marked it as the source image, and then chose my internal HDD as the destination.  From the looks of it, I've done it all correctly. But I keep getting the same error... it says it needs to scan the image, I let it, and it goes for about an hour or two with the subscript "Block Checksum Partition #X". In this case, it is at #2, and when it gets toward the end of the scan, an error pops up saying "unable to scan (internal error)". Info: MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

IMac Intel :: Restoring From Time Machine Backup With New HDD
my hard drive died in my 24" Early 2008 Aluminum iMac. Luckily, I had a time machine backup, and I took it upon myself to replace the 320 GB Hard Drive with a 2 TB Seagate Barracuda disk. The hardware replacement (although difficult) went fine. Now, I'm having a bit of trouble restoring the new drive from my time machine backup. The new disk shows up in Disk Utility with the correct capacity. I formatted the new drive with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using my installation disk. My only problem is that the drive isn't showing up when I am choosing which drive I want to restore my time machine backup onto. I can pick out the backup I want perfectly fine, but I can't find the new drive. Information: 24" iMac 2.8 GHz 2 TB HD 4GB RAM 6 MB L2 cache Mac OS X (10.6.4)  Designed By Apple in Cupertino California 

Software :: Restoring After HDD Change And Clean System Installation
I have just upgraded from a 60GB HD running OS X 10.4.11? to a 250GB drive. Before changing HDs, I backed up the old HD onto an external FireWire drive using Retrospect Express 6.1. I made a clean install of 10.5.6 onto the new HD, installed Retrospect Express. I then restored my entire old HD to a *folder* on my new HD. There is room for it on the external FireWire disk also if that is better. I expected wrongly to be able to use Migration Assistant to integrate my applications, e-mails, calendar, bookmarks, etc. into 10.5.6 but it did not allow me to select a folder to migrate from (I think it is looking preferably for another Mac attached via FireWire or at least an external disk, but I'm not sure what it's limits are). I am also now concerned about Migration Assistant losing data (such as filed e-mails) as I have consulted with a tech friend who says it is problematic and I should restore by hand!Can you tell me the most efficient and reliable way to get out of my predicament? I'm crazy busy business-wise and I don't have time to lose wallowing & finding my own way, I can afford the time to do things right though :-) which is why I'm asking. Obviously I am shut down now, I do not want to start doing "real work" on my computer until all my applications and files are in their proper places. Applications (Quark, Adobe, Apple), all my Mail accounts, iCal, Fonts, Firefox + extensions & bookmarks are my mission-critical tools.

IMac Intel :: HDD Fails Again After Restoring Data From Time Machine?
I will try to explain my case and end with a question that maybe someone will be able to answer (I hope..): 1. My imac started to run very slow and every 2 minutes or less appeared the coloured wheel for some secs. While the wheel was visible, the Os and all the apps running freezed. 2. Firstly I thought it was a software problem, but after some "testing" I started thinking on a hard drive failure or similar. 3. I did a disk verification whith the Disk Utility and it failed. 4. Snow Leopard :: Best Way To Restore Entire Contents Of Mac HD?
After installing Snow Leopard my iMovie 6 project went haywire. As I found that others had the same problem, I backed up Mac HD with TM, and then re-installed Leopard using the erase procedure. After that I couldn't access my TM backups via TM, so I copied it to the Mac HD folder. This didn't work out too well, as I had to manually restore various applications and libraries. I then found out you can access the backups via TM by pressing Control, click. So I deleted almost all the files I copied and I'm ready to re-install the entire folder Mac HD via TM. Now it asks me for a folder's name or to create a new folder. I can restore it to the existing Mac HD folder, as a separate folder within it, but then it will be like the previous attempt I made to copy it. What is the best way to do it? Should I create a new Mac HD folder and try to delete the one that came with Leopard? Information: MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.6)

It's impossible to select single files to restore. The checkboxes fail to work from a certain level, so I can't do anything else but restoring 50GB just to get my 1MB file back! OS X Leopard :: Restoring Mail From Intel (10.5) Mac To G4 (tiger 10.4)
My Macbook recently died and has been sent back to apple for repair. I did back everything up with super duper prior to the crash. So I have now connected the drive with the super duper backup to my G4. I moved the Mail folder from the User Library over to the same folder on my G4. When I open mail, non of my accounts are visible. Some mail saved in folders is there but nothing for my inbox (where I keep most incoming mail). Is it possible to move Mail from an Intel to a G4 mac and have it work? what other files or settings do I have to mess with to get all the emails, attachments and account information to be usable on the G4? OS X :: Restoring MAC To Leopard Using Carbon Copy Cloner
Would appreciate some help in trying to restore a copy of Leopard created using Carbon Copy Cloner. I created a bootable backup of Leopard, as I am installing Snow Leopard. I checked that the bootable backup I took of Leopard works and then installed Snow Leopard. Not really happy with the Snow Leopard at the moment and so decided to go back to my original Leopard as this worked faster and without issues. The thing is, I cannot work out how to restore my backup from my external drive to my Macbook. All I can see in the backup location are the main folders, like Applications, Library, System & Users. Is it just a case of copying over the original backed up folders into the main "Macintosh HD" folder and overwrite the new ones there following the install of Snow Leopard?

I am stuck away from home on business and I mistakenly deleted some of my core fonts now some of my programs are not working correctly. Is there anywhere where I could download a file with all the fonts included in OS X 10.5 startup disk? I guess that it is possible to make a trip to the Mac store but the nearest one for me is a four hour bus ride... So ideally this would be avoided via internet if at all possible. OS X Leopard :: Disconnected External HDD Is Somehow Writing Itself To My Internal HDD?
so the other night I got a notification from OS X that I was almost out of disk space, which I found very odd, because the last time this happened was when I had my external hard drive connected, and it was somehow writing itself onto my internal hard drive (it is formatted so that I can use it for both my MBP and the Windows machine at home). You can understand my puzzlement when I got the message, as I did not have my external connected at the time, and had not had it connected since the day before. I had, however, noticed some significant lagging in Safari and Adium, which I found very odd as being the only things affected. As of writing this, I will have cleaned off what has been written to my hard drive twice now (each time 50+ GB!), and I am starting to get very frustrated, with finals and projects coming due very fast now. It appears that the writing starts after I leave Safari/Adium idle for a while, which is very odd, as I can't imagine why either of these programs being idle would initiate this unexplained writing. I have, however, noticed that there seems to be something invisible in the trash folder that will simply not delete, and has been there since I had the initial problem of my external writing to the internal drive. The Trash constantly tells me there is "1 item" in the trash, but nothing shows up. When I go to Secure Empty I get the little window that tells you the completion status on the emptying, and it always says "4 Items to delete." Even after showing all hidden files and folders, nothing shows up in the trash, despite there always being "1 Item" in there. My guess is that this could be what is causing the writes. What I don't understand is how in the world it managed to store my 100+ GB of stuff on my external in an invisible file that is taking up next to no space on my system, because when I do a scan using Grand Perspective, it doesn't show anything out of the ordinary files and folders that I know should be there. Certainly not 100+ GB of what I have on my external, as I know what I have where, and what are duplicates, and duplicates only show up after the external files have written themselves. Some additional details for consideration: Bootcamped hard drive, 15GB for my Windows partition, have only used it to play Roller Coaster Tycoon, and have only connected to the internet on Windows a total of 3 times, each time to download Firefox, iTunes, and Safari, no additional browsing. External HDD is a LaCie Firewire 400 drive, 320GB formatted for both Windows and Mac (HFS+, right?), haven't connected it in at least two days. Last time this happened it was actually connected, but this time has not been connected when the files have magically appeared on my internal HDD. There is an invisible file (or multiple files) somehow not showing up AT ALL that is hanging around in the trash. I believe this invisible file(s) to be the culprit, though I'm puzzled as to how. Each time the mysterious writes have happened, Safari/Adium have been idle and open. If you're wondering how in the world this is happening, don't worry. The first time this happened when my drive was actually connected, I took my MBP to the Apple Store in Indianapolis and totally stumped three employees, including the store manager. If he thought that was odd, wait until I tell him its now writing to my HDD without being connected! Information: 15" MacBook Pro (Santa Rosa) Mac OS X (10.5.5)

I am using an iMac , that has Two external HDD connected to it, HDD ( A ) and (B ) both formatted in Mac OS Extended ( Journaled ) . ( A ) is only used to backup the iMac with SuperDuper and ( B ) is only used to store photos and music . I now want to transfer every thing thats stored on ( B ) over to ( A ) and then remove ( B ) from the iMac all together. before I go and do any thing , as I am still learning, I really would like to find out if there's a best way to do the transfer ..? Hardware :: External HDD - Extend It - Format A USB HDD In FAT32 Using My Mac?
Probably about 10 years ago I was a big techie with DOS and all that, and now I seem to have forgotten how to do anything! Two questions. i) My iMac, which I bought last year has run out of HDD space. What can I do to extend it? I really can't work out what I have filled it up with as I have only 8.5gb in my applications folder 4.7gb in the systems folder 9.1 GB in the libary 40.18GB in the users bit (of which 32gb is music on iTunes) Other than the standard applications I have a DOS emulator, Office and Spore. But apparently I have used 200gb?!?!? I can't find where this disk space is being used up. Any ideas on what I can check to clear this out? I put a partition in to possibly install windows, how do I check that's been removed correctly? Also if I plug in a USB drive to extend the memory how can I get the mac running as if this was actually the normal drive for this computer? And question ii) I have a PS3 which I want to back up my info on, but its on a FAT32 format. Can I format a USB HDD in FAT32 using my Mac?

Anyways, I just got this Powermac and just bought 1TB internal harddrive in second harddrive bay and still using the 150GB start up disk. But I have crap load of music and its transferring into the start up disk! So its full already. How can I share or whatever to use the music in 1TB harddrive? I hope you guys understand what I'm trying to say.

OS X Leopard :: Delete Backups For Entire System?
Is there a way to completely remove a system from the Time Machine's backups? A system was backed up while directly attached to the Time Machine drive. Now that system is being backed up across the network, so it's backups are going into a sparsebundle instead of the folder structure created by the first backup. I'd like to entirely remove all traces of the first, attached, backup from the drive. I know how to delete an individual backup, but how does one delete a "machine"? Information: Mac OS X (10.5.7)
