MacBook Pro :: 13" Too New For Combo Updater?
I was having some issues with Spotlight on my 13" MBP. One of the fixes I read about suggested applying the 10.5.7 combo updater. I downloaded it, triple checking that it was the correct file, not the server version, not the normal 10.5.7 version, not 10.5.4, etc... A few clicks into the install, I got this... You cannot install Mac OS X Update Combined on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update. My HDD had a red exclamation. I then downloaded the non-combo version of the 10.5.7 updater and got the same results. Could this be because the 13" MBP is so new they haven't updated the updater to work with it? If not, could it have anything to do with the fact that I initially used Migration Assistant to move my stuff from my previous computer?

OS X Leopard :: Runaway Software Updater ?
Ever since updating to Leopard my software updater has gone on steroids. If I uncheck the option in system preferences to automatically look for updates, it rechecks it. It then notifies me of new software every 15 minutes, regardless of what actions I take. If I run top -o cpu I can see that the CPU usage is highest from SoftwareUp.... I can hear my processor burning away and see that it is running at 100% in Activity Monitor. If I use ps -u <username> I can match the process id from top to the item /System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app/Contents/Resources/SoftwareUpdateCheck -b Logging out will stop it, but upon login the behavior resumes. I have a rogue process...

OS X Leopard :: Runaway Adobe Updater Process?
Each time I launch Adobe (Acrobat) Reader (was v8, now v9) on my MacBook, it seems to launch an Adobe Updater process in the background. I'd like to prevent that from happening if possible. But the real issue is the resources this Updater process takes: as soon as it launches, my CPU utilization shoots to 80+% on both cores, with 70-80+% of this being this Updater process. In addition, it never ends: the process continues to run at this rate and never stops. I've also noticed that with Reader v8, this process produced a visible icon in the dock: this icon didn't allow the process to be force-killed, but at least it was there and you could see it. In v9, I don't even see a dock icon, even though the process is still running. In v8, I found a "solution" that involved hacking a library file, but upgrading to v9 seems to have undone this hack. Is there a "proper" way to stop this from happening? Information: MacBook Mac OS X (10.5.6)

OS X Leopard :: Software Updater Store Its Downloads?
Just wondering where the automatic software updater stores its downloads. I would like to backup the installers and keep the aside for possible future use/ reinstalls of the OS Yes, I know that it is possible to go to the downloads page directly and download the standalone installers, but that requires going through all your software and seeing what updates are required and just downloading the required patches. If I can copy and store the patches that the system has already downloaded, before I install them, then I am guaranteed to have the correct patches. I can then store them in numbered folders and should I need them in future, re install them in the correct order. This is my first Mac, and I am not sure how I want to use it/set it up yet. I want to do a few re-installs etc to learn the OS, but only want to have to download the updates once. OS X Leopard :: Time Machine Backup Putting Quicken Updater Installers On Desktop?
I use Quicken for Mac 2007 and recently updated the Quicken software with a downloaded update. For the last few weeks, Time Machine backups have repeatedly placed two volumes (Quicken 2007 R2 Updater and Quicken for Mac 2007 the program installer) on my desktop. If I eject these volumes, they reappear in the next backup, no matter what I do. How can I stop these installers from reappearing each time? Information: iMac 3.06-GHz Mac OS X (10.6.2)

Snow Leopard :: Safari And Adobe Automatic Updater Fail To Find Internet
I updated to 10.6.5 yesterday but have since had issues with Software Update, Safari and Adobe Automatic Updater failing to find the internet. Network Diagnostics says that I appear to be connected to the internet and I can indeed access it via Firefox. I work in a studio of four imacs of similar spec and we have the same issue on one other machine that was also updated yesterday at the same time. The other two imacs operate 10.5.8 (we haven't upgraded them to Snow Leopard yet) and they work still work fine. So I'm left thinking it must be a problem with the updated OS. OS X Leopard :: Can Download But Not Install 10.5.6 Combo
I upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.5.4 using a DVD purchsed from Apple. Installation of 10.5.4 went OK. Computer worked just fine. I then did a manual Software Update to install 10.5.6 Combo. It downloaded OK, but at the installation stage it FROZE after the progress bar got about 1/5th along. I left it for one hour or so since it was a huge file (675 MB) and I thought it may just be taking a long time to install. I repeated the installation attempt several times with exactly same result. After downloading 10.5.6, Software Update dialogue box said to restart. Each time I clicked restart, I noticed that the background screen theme reverted to the default theme that came with the 10.5.4 DVD. I had changed this theme to my preferred theme after installing 10.5.4. But each attempt to install the downloaded 10.5.6 caused the backgound screen theme to revert to the 10.5.4 default theme as the installation process commenced before FREEZING 1/5th of the way along progress bar. No menu bar or dock was available - just the FROZEN progress bar and the default background screen theme. The whole computer becomes FROZEN. Each time I had to shut computer off with the power button. I've repaired permissions with Disk Utility. I've used Preferential Treatment to check for any bad Preference files. The Software Update log file under "Installed Updates" shows that 10.5.6 HAS been installed, but "About This Mac" reveals that 10.5.4 is STILL the current OS. Most, but NOT all, other downloads from Software Update, since installing 10.5.4, have installed OK. Information: eMac Mac OS X (10.5.4) PowerPC G4. 1 GHz. 1 GB

OS X Leopard :: Mac OS Combo 10.5.7 Update
In May, I downloaded the Mac OS 10.5.7 Combo Update. Today I noticed that there is a new Combo Update dated 7/10/09 that is labeled as the 10.5.7 Combo Update? Is this correct or is this latest update really the 10.5.8 update but with a wrong description? If it is just another version of the 10.5.7 Combo Update, is it needed since I have the May version? Software Update doesn't mention a newer 10.5.7 update.

OS X Leopard :: Permissions Anomalies From 10.5.8 Combo-not Ones Which Can Be Ignored-V.K.?
I applied the 10.5.8 Combo over a 10.5.8 originally done from the Delta, then got these unusual "Permissions Differ." Found this discussions thread which suggests these do need to be removed or corrected. Could someone, maybe V.K. who was involved in this earlier discussion, please clarify just what it is I have to do now. This was a very long, complicated thread, and I'm not certain I understand how to proceed. And I wonder if anything since has come to light regarding this issue? Read through carefully and just found this. Will try it. http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9951085#9951085 I have tested this and it works. If you install the update twice without repairing permissions in between, the permissions database does not have the permission-000 settings for the files. [url] Is this the solution here? Not sure I understand the procedure. OS X Leopard :: Superdrive Only Recognized As Combo Drive?
I installed an HP 300n DVD+RW drive in my Power Mac G4, running Mac OS 10.5.6. Reading CDs/DVDs works fine as well as burning CDs. Somehow, part of OS X is only recognizing it as a Combo drive. System profiler recognizes it as a fully compatible Superdrive as seen in this picture: [URL] The rest of the system thinks it is a combo drive as seen here: [URL] When I insert a DVD-R, nothing happens. The Finder presents no dialog, it does not show up on the desktop, and Disk Utility does not realize that anything was inserted. Nothing happens differently than if I closed the drive with no disc in. Why is it only working as a combo drive? EDIT: Is it possible that the drive is +R only? OS X Leopard :: ACL Warnings After 10.5.7 Combo Update
After applying the above update (downloaded, not through software update), I ran a permissions repair and am getting a lot (i.e., several pages worth) of "ACL found but not expected" errors, mostly regarding items in a /usr/share/vim/vim72/syntax directory with a .vim extension. This is on top of all the front row.app and itnues.app problems that persist. However, specifically about these "vim" warnings. First, what the heck are all these "vim" files? Is this part of the osx install, or was this something installed by something else? Second, are they something that can be safely removed? Thirdly, is my only option to get rid of all these annoying acl errors to open terminal and run chmod -N on them all individually? Information: Mac OS X (10.5.7)

MacBook :: Install Snow Leopard With Broken Combo Drive
I've been searching but I can't find anywhere where my specific problem is answered. Short version: Does Remote Disc work in Tiger (10.4.11)? Long version: I have the following: Macbook running 10.4.11; busted DVD drive PC running Win7 w/ Firewire port Snow Leopard install disc I'd like to get Remote Disc running on my laptop and install over the network (using my Win7 PC). I've done the terminal hack which is supposed to enable Remote Disc on MacBooks. However, Remote disc doesn't show up in my finder (not sure that 10.4.11 has a place for it to show). Does Remote disc work with Tiger-Macbooks? Or do you need Leopard? If Remote Disc won't work, can a Win7 PC install Snow Leopard via firewire to a Mac? If possible, I'd like to avoid buying an external DVD drive, as it appears Remote Disc will work in Snow Leopard. Don't have a firewire cable on me but I could buy one -- just want to be sure it will work before I waste the money.
