OS X Leopard :: Disconnecting A Logged-in AOL Account Remotely?

My elderly parents have a dial-up AOL account, and they often forget to disconnect, which ties up their only phone line, so we can't reach them.

IMac Intel :: Cannot Connect To AOL Account In AOL 10.3.7 On Leopard?
After giving up trying to get AOL 10.3.7 to work on my Mid-2007 model iMac with 10.5.8, I have spent a few months using AOL's latest offering, AOL Desktop 1.5. I still find it lacking in functionality, performance, and aesthetics compared to it's predecessor, which I miss dearly. Once again I have tried reinstalling and configuring AOL 10.3.7 in a vain attempt at getting it to connect.

However, now that I have a laptop which I take out of the house, I have made a discovery - when I got to school this morning and woke my laptop from sleep, the AOL welcome screen was sitting on the desktop. Not really concentrating on what i was doing, I pressed 'Sign On', instead of a non-existent cancel button. Upon doing so, AOL attempted to connect, and came up with the message "Connection Warning: Unable to connect to AOL. Your TCP/IP connection may not be working properly. If you are connecting via a LAN or another service provider (dial-up, cable modem, DSL, etc.), you may need to re-login to the provider before attempting to sign on to AOL." As far as I can see, the content of the message is not overly important, (although those more technically adept than myself may be able to decipher more that I can). What is important is that I DO NOT get this message when I try to sign on with airport connected to a network. This would suggest that AOL is making a connection to the internet (contradictory to what I was previously assuming), but not signing on with my account details. Indeed, when trying to sign on with my existing account AOL has been telling me that my account is not valid, but I assumed that this was because it could not connect to the internet. So anyway... the question: Why does AOL 10.3.7 think my account is invalid when it is not?

OS X Leopard :: Key Does Not Work When Logged Into A Specific Account
a specific key that refuses to work when logged into their user account. Example "1" will not work...

Log into another account such as admin or type 1 into the username box at log in... and the key works fine.

The only fix that I have found thus far is to delete the problem account and start again.

Restoring keyboard shortcut defaults makes no difference.

Usually it is just one key, but not always the same key for each user (the last one I fixed was the "d" key.

Xserve :: System Freezes Whenever Account Logged Out
Ok so I'm setting up a simply 10.5 Xserve. Nothing complicated, just needs iCal, Wikki, iChat, and Time Machine. Two shares as well, but no restrictions on who can access it. So the system comes in with 10.4 Server installed and a 10.5 drop-in CD, which isn't what I would have preferred but it's what I have to work with. The first 10.5 install seems to go ok, but the system freezes whenever an account is logged out. Not good.

I wipe the drive and reinstall, selecting the Simple Server option since that's really all they need. Everything looks ok at first. The problem comes when I try to activate Time Machine on client machines. The clients see the server and see the designated drive, but I get permission errors every time I try to select the drive as the BackUp drive. Doesn't matter what user name/password I use, it errors or simply does nothing.

Software :: Unable To Log Into Account That Was Logged On
We experienced a power outage and upon restart of all the machines, the user who was logged on when the power outage hit, can no longer log into the system successfully - the only visible thing is the pinwheel of death which spins indefinitely. Strangely, even after the username has been deleted and recreated, the account experiences the same behaviour- the only recourse so far has been to copy the user's profile to a new account that has been created.

OS X :: Online Movies Play Differently When Logged In, And Wife Is Logged In?
I know there is something simple Im overlooking, but I cant figure out what it is. There is a website (subscription) that my wife likes to go to watch streaming movies and TV. When she logs into our iMac, goes to the website, and clicks on a movie to watch, the movie opens in the websites own movie player. When Im logged into our iMac under my user name, go to the same website and click on the same movie, QuickTime launches and plays the video in a separate QT player. The QT and Safari preferences are set the same when either of us are logged in, so why when I log in do movies play in QT, and when my wife log in they play in the websites movie player? Is there something other than preferences that may be set different? What other settings should I be comparing? BTW, my account is the Administrator account.

OS X Leopard :: Restarting With 2 Admin Users Logged In?
This does not work under 10.5.8 on either PowerPC or Intel portables. The OS does not accept either user's id or password. You must logout one user and then action the restart from the other user.

This means that if you want to install software that requires a restart, make sure that the other user is Logged OUT first.

It appears to be a bug since I have it on 3 separate computers. Did not appear with 10.4.11.

I selected the Visualizer, selected full screen mode, and then typed command-F - hoping (since I'd never tried the visualizer) it would take me out of full screen. The image froze. I clicked my mouse and bam! the music stopped, my screen went blue (as if the system was rebooting) and then showed the default background and the Login window. Snow Leopard :: Cannot Shut Down MB / When Multiple Users Are Logged In
OK this is weird. I updated my MB Pro from 10.5.6 to 10.6.1 last night. I am unable to shut down the computer with multiple users logged in, from my admin account, unless I type in my username with the exact propercase I used when I set up the account. This wasn't the case before as all lowercased letters were accepted and are used on our other Leopard-based Macs.

Initially I thought, "OK, SL is more strict with the username/password." However, the other admin can log us all out in her merry old fashion: uppercase, lowercase, propercase be damned. The only other fact I can think of is that SL was installed under my admin account (if that's relevant).

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Internet Sharing While Logged Out?
I have 2 Mac Minis (10.6.8) and a laser printer in my upstairs office, while my Cable Modem is downstairs.  I use one of the upstairs Minis to connect via wireless (to a SonicWall TZ210) and then share the connection via the Ethernet port, which is connected to a gigabit switch, along with the printer and the other Mini.

As long as the host Mini is logged into a user, the other Mini can connect to the Internet just fine.  I had to tweak the settings on the TZ210, to allow for the shared subnet on the upstairs network, but - as I said - it works just fine as long as someone is logged into the host Mini.

However, as soon as the user logs OUT of the host Mini, the client mini can't ping, nslookup, surf, or anything else.  It's like Internet Sharing has been deactivated on the host Mini.

How can I get Internet Sharing to continue to function on the Host Mini when no users are logged in?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Logged In But Locked Out Of Stuff?
I'm the admin on my Macbook and after I restarted it earlier am essentially locked out of everything on my HD save for the Applications folder. I keep getting the error "The folder "Documents" can't be opened because you don't have the permission to see its contents" and would like to regain access to it as I have not backed up my stuff in about a month because of a Time Machine issue.

I don't know if it's related to this but all the prefernces have been changed to default and cannot change them in system prefrences.

I'd just like to get my stuff back and am fine with a clean install.  I have access to 3 external drives: a 1 TB FW400 which stores my backups, a 120GB FW400 other external, and a 2TB USB one.  Could it be possible to install OS X on the 120, boot from there, copy everything on the Macbook's disk to the 2TB, and then restore from a much earlier Time Machine backup on the 1TB once OS X is sucessfully reinstalled?

Alternativly is there a simple terminal command I can use?

OS X :: Can't Restart Or Shutdown In Snow Leopard If Other Users Are Logged In
This is a neat one. I found out last night that I cannot restart or shut down either of my Macs if my wife's account is still logged in. In order to perform either function, I have to log onto my wife's account and log it out before it will allow me to either restart or power down the computer.

If I try to do so while both accounts are logged in, I will get the usual prompt for an Admin name and password, but then it just won't go past that screen. The prompt just keeps coming up to enter the Admin info. Anyone else experiencing this, or have any recommendations?

I did an update install on both machines. I updated our iMac with a full retail copy, and the MBP I updated with an UTD disc. Perhaps doing a full erase and install is the answer? Or do you guys think it's just something buggy in SL?

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Mysterious User Appears Logged In Via SMB
I'm running Snow Leopard Server (10.6.3), and for the last couple of days I've noticed a mysterious user logged in via SMB. The connections panel shows user name "Guest" at address "DENY_NONE" connected for 00.00 hours. It seems to really slow down the network when this ghost user is accessing the server. I may be wrong, but this user seems to appear after I have our Windows 7 test machine (iMac 3GHz Core 2 Duo) access the server.

I also get the following message in the logs for hours after the machine logs off:
2010/05/03 14:01:10, 0, pid=51155 /SourceCache/samba/samba-235.2/samba/source/locking/posix.c:posix_fcntl_getlock(250)
posix_fcntl_getlock: WARNING: lock request at offset 2147516416, length 32768 returned
an Invalid argument error.

This can happen when using 64 bit lock offsets on 32 bit NFS mounted file systems. The only way to get rid of this is by shutting down SMB for a few minutes. We're going to be switching all our Windows clients to Windows 7 soon, and I don't want to magnify this problem 10- to 20-fold when we do. I don't get these messages when our Windows XP clients access files from the server.

Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Have Multiple Users Logged In At Once On A Single Client Computer
I am running OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Pro, and have two iMacs (27.5") as clients in my workgroup.

Computer A : Server

Computer B, C : Client machines

The problem is that when user1 is logged onto the server network drive (/Network/Servers/ComputerA/Users/~user1/) from a given client (say ComputerB), it is not possible to login another user (user2) onto the server network drive from client Computer B.

It IS possible however for user2 to log in from another client machine (ComputerC) without any problem and access his home directory.

Similarly it IS possible for a local user to log onto ComputerB while a network user is logged onto the central file server.

If user1 is logged into ComputerB, and user 2 is logged onto ComputerC, if user1 ssh's over to Computer B, he can log in, but he cannot access his home directory, getting the following error:

Could not chdir to home directory /Network/Servers/nplab0/Users/chris_dimattina: Permission denied
-bash: /Network/Servers/nplab0/Users/chris_dimattina/.bash_profile: Permission denied

and gets sent to the root directory of ComputerB.
