OS X Leopard :: DVD Player Won't Recognize Disc - Reinstall Program?

For some reason my DVD Player won't recognize the DVDs I've put in to my computer. I haven't used the DVD player in a while, but I don't think I've missed any software updates. Currently I am running OS X 10.5.8 and the DVD Player is 5.0.3. Any ideas? Can I reinstall the program somewhere ?

I am currently working in Orlando, Fl and would like to watch DVDs on my time off.

I burned 4 DVD+R disks with an iMovie via iDVD on my MacBook Pro. All disks work perfectly in my MacMini, my home DVD player, and my work PC, but are not recognized by DVD Player on the same MacBook Pro 3.1 (2.2 Ghz) that they were burned on! The disks just spin for awhile and then are ejected.

If I go to applications and try to open the DVD player it says "Initialization Error. A Valid DVD drive could not be found-70012." If I look in hardware at ATA it says I have no ATA devices. way to get the disc out.

PowerPC :: IBook Won't Recognize DVD Player / But Playing CDs
Part of my iBook says there is an initialization error when I open up the DVD program, and the other part of it says I have have no drive at all. But I have tried everything that I was told to do. Basically I have a problem with my white iBook Laptop, a G3-4 800 mhz, which runs on OSX-10.14.11, and has 384 sd-ram

It has a DVD application program, but opening it just gives an initialization error. The date on the App is something from earlier this year, so it's not that old. It has the corporate "DVD" player logo. (but it won't open) If I drop down the Apple menu at the top corner, "About this Mac" I see the list, and if I select Burners, it says No Burner Found. If I look for CD or Audio devices, there is nothing like that on the list but i can find the cd drive under ATA drives (it has the HD listed, and then a CD drive). When I open Disk Utility to find out about 'repairing disk permissions' all I see on the left side of the screen are 2 drives: the hard drive and a CD drive (LG Model 8245B), and I cannot select 'repair permissions' or 'verify' because they are in light grey (un-selectable). If I click on 'First Aid" bacically nothing happens. It's sort of like "nothing's broken, nothing to fix."

So I went on to reset the PRAM, as this was the last suggestion
someone gave me.

Some interesting things: The thing plays CD's. It detects a CD drive, like I said. There is no CD/Audio player Application, anywhere (i was looking to see if it was read/write). There is also, buried somewhere, an older Apple DVD application, for an Apple DVD player. It wants to run on OS-9. So I open OS-9, and after OS9 has opened, it tells me that OS-9 doesn't support it.

The DVD application I mentioned earlier (it's about 28 MB) is newer, and runs on OS-X 10.14. (So.. yes, this was an OS-9 computer which got upgraded to OS 10.4.11)

Lastly, it came from a brother in law who is a filmmaker, and I know that he used it for DVD's. I was told i could also burn with it.(it doesn't burn cd's right now) He re-set some names and passwords when he gave it to me; from what I can see, all the 'permissions' are ok, and set to my name. I have his passwords in case I need them.

If the computer has forgotten that it has a DVD drive, then I can't run OS 10 (which is a dvd), if it were to crash. This worries me, since I had to do this with my old Pismo only 2 months after buying it (at least it had a dvd drive!) I lifted the keyboard to see if there was a label on the cd-dvd player.
Nothing. I can't pull it out (like I could in my old Pismo) to examine the underside. How does it come out? (it's a tray-loader)

Before I start trying to remove the drive, just to see what it says...

Is there any program on the iBook which will actually detect, and tell me what hardware I have? I think that the computer still thinks it has the old cd drive in it, even though it was obviously upgraded to a dvd drive. If I could find out the brand I could maybe download some software driver
for it..?

(i am sort of afraid to go poking around the system files if I know that I cannot use the OS- 10 startup disk when it crashes (since it is a dvd)...

So is it beginning to sound like there WAS a dvd drive in there first, which burned out, and was replaced by a cheaper LG (that's Dell) CD-R drive

OS X :: MBP Disc Drive Won't Recognize Snow Leopard Disc?
I have a 2007 Intel MBP, running Leopard. I purchased the family version of Snow Leopard. When I tried to install it, it just spins the disc for a minute, makes the noise like it's trying to read it and then spits it out. All other discs work fine with my MBP so I know it is not the disc drive itself. I have all software "up to date." My brother installed SL on both of his MBs, one newer than mine and one older, just fine (with the same disc). I haven't seen anything out there with this issue so I wanted to start a thread to see if anyone knows how to resolve this issue (beyond taking it back to Apple and exchanging).

MacBook Aluminum :: Super Drive Won't Recognize DVD's But Will Recognize CD's.
My optical drive won't recognize any DVD's. It doesn't matter what kind of DVD, it won't recognize any. I was watching a movie one day about a month ago. The movie ended, I ejected the disk and put another disk in. It wouldn't recognize it. It jsut let it spin a few times, stopped, and spit the disk back out. I thought it might just be the disk. I put another one in. Same thing. I tried the disk I'd been watching just minutes before. Same thing. I tried a number of movies I've watched on the computer many times and it does the same thing. The thing I'm worried about is my warranty ran out about a week before this started. Has anyone had to have their drive replaced? How much did it end up costing and how long did they keep your machine? I use mine for business and really can't be without it. Has anyone figured out a simple fix for this issue? Beow is my drive information.

OS X Leopard :: DVD Player Won't Work - How To Fix It
At some point the DVD Player stopped popping up after inserting a dvd. I checked the options under CD/DVD and saw that the settings were fine (At DVD insert open with DVD Player). I also tried opening the DVD Player from 'Programs' in order to try playing the DVD from there and the DVD Player just wouldnt respond (no window was opened). I then decided to download and install the Apple DVD Player 3.1.1 [URL]. This didnt help as the Player still didnt work.

I installed VLC Player as a workaround for my friend to be able to play DVDs and it works fine but it would be nice to get DVD Player working again because of nice features like controlling the DVD with the Remote Control.

Final Cut / DVD Studio :: Won't Work In DVD Player. What's The Checklist?
I burned a DVD-R using DVDSP 4.2.1. The computer recognizes it and plays fine, but no DVD player will. The assets used were .m2v and .ac3 files created from Final Cut timelines with Compressor. The client needs a new copy that works ASAP, so what's the checklist of usual suspects for this kind of problem?

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: DVD Player Window Won't Resize Properly
I have several DVDs recorded on an LG DVD recorder that are the wrong aspect ratio (they play what should be 16:9 as 4:3, making everything look tall and narrow). I have tried everything in DVD Player to fix this, but only one thing works :Select Video ZoomDeselect "Lock aspect ratio"Select Manual mode and move "Width" slider until picture looks correct At this point, the adjustments have moved the left and right edges of the video out of the Viewer window. "Hey, no problem" I thought, "I'll just resize the Viewer window horizontally until the whole video is showing". Unfortunately, I can't. Dragging the bottom right of the Viewer window resizes it both horizontally and vertically DESPITE the "Lock aspect ratio" box being unchecked. In other words, it wants to preserve a 4:3 aspect even though I have adjusted the width slider manually. What I'm left with, is a window that shows the video undistorted, but with the left and right edges missing. What am I doing wrong, or this a bug in DVD Player?

Now, from what googling I've done, it seems the only way to fix this is a fresh install. Only one problem - it will not boot the install disc when I hold "C" at power up.

I've already done the reset (remove battery, hold power 5 sec) and also reset PRAM. Neither of these helped the system recognize the disc.

MacBook :: Won't Recognize A Specific DVD
My MacBook simply does not get along with one specific DVD, and I can't figure out why. It's the third disc in a set of four (First 13 episodes of Glee on DVD -- don't judge), and the others play perfectly. The disc is flawless, as far as I can tell, but for some reason, my MacBook won't recognize it. When I put it in, it sounds like the disc is trying to spin but can't. It does this for about ten seconds and then it gets spit back out.

The DVD will play anywhere else but the MacBook and the MacBook will play anything else except that DVD. I would just accept that this DVD and my Mac will never be friends IF it was just a stand alone DVD, but like I said, it's from a set of four. They should all be in the same format/region/what have you, right?

When I put in a blank CD or DVD nothing happens. It doesn't ask me what to do (that's the default in my System Preferences) or take me to iTunes or anything. When I try to do a burn from iTunes, the Finder or iDVD, it asks for a blank disk, but when I put it in, nothing happens - it just keeps waiting. If I hit the eject button on my keyboard - the disk ejects. In Disk Utility it says that I have a CD-R or DVD-R but it won't let me erase it.

But when I play the DVD using any of three different external DVD players, the audio momentarily drifts out of sync by 30 to 40 frames, near the end of my 30-minute program, but is back in sync after about a minute, when the shot at hand ends and the next shot begins.

IMac Intel :: Won't Even Start/boot From OS X Install Disc (DVD)
when I returned to my iMac a few days ago (it's almost always on) i saw that the screen saver was frozen. The iMac didn't respond to anything so I had to turn it off and back on again.

From there things started to get worse. It never booted back to the installed latest Leopard.

None of the boot up keystrokes works either: Shift key for safe boot, alt key for letting the user select the boot device, verbose mode, single user mode, even booting from the Leopard or my brand new Snow Leopard Install DVD doesn't work! After a few tries the DVD gets ejected and eventually the flashing folder with the question mark appears. (Which means that the iMac can't find a boot device.)

Sounds to me like a dead hard drive. I can hear the hard drive spinning up, a little head access and then a spin down. This repeats endlessly.

Apple/OS X doesn't make use of the S.M.A.R.T. features of modern hard drives more thouroghly and doesn't warn the user much earlier that the hard drive is about to die!

But what I don't understand: why can't I even boot from DVD?Wouldn't the first thing be: boot from DVD and run Disk Utility and check the hard drive? (Can't do it via fschk from the command line because I can't boot into single user mode...)

The hard drive isn't user accessible in the aluminum Intel iMac 24", right? So I have to bring it to an authorized Apple dealer, right? My my my, that's gonna be expensive!

If only I could boot from DVD/CD and check the hard disk ..
