OS X :: Inactive Safari Tabs Display Incorrectly
Feb 23, 2010
I have Safari set to open all new tabs in back of the current tab (option-clicking links). It's been working fine, displaying the new tabs normally like so. For the past few weeks, all of a sudden all tabs that open in back of the current tab display like so. If I make the second tab active and then make the first tab active, everything looks fine as it should. It's only when new inactive tabs are created that they look all funky. I've tried deleting the Safari prefs file and also reinstalling Safari.

I've created an extension for Safari which does exactly what you want. It closes all the tabs except for the tab that is currently active. As a side effect you can also change a setting which when enabled will on pressing the button ask you if you really want that (to prevent accidental button presses). You can find the extension on the extensions page of Safari.
I will be adding functionality soon: Context menu options will be added so that you can create a white list of websites that you don't want to have closed upon clicking the Close All Tabs button. This can be convenient if you, just like me, have a number of tabs open with websites you never close. For example, I always have my GMail open and another page I am working on. All the other tabs can in most cases be closed all at once at some point, however I don't want it to close my GMail and currently active tab.

I have really tried to like the new Safari, but I can't seem to generate 'affection' for the tabs. One thing especially is irritating to me. Being over the address bar is bad enough, but when there's a bunch of tabs, finding a spot to 'grab' the window to move it is difficult.
Is there a way to move the tabs back below the address window like the older Safari? I hope this hasn't been asked and answered before. I didn't see it.

my safari upon opening shows a tab for the current window. i thought tabs only appeared when you have 2 or more concurrent windows open at the same time.
is there a way to hide the tab when you only have 1 window open?
for example: [URL]

Safari had tabs yesterday. Today - no tabs nor tab bar. Nothing in Safari Preferences brings back the tabs. How can I get my tabs back?

Earlier this week I did a clean re-install of SL and now in safari 4 I cannot remember how to get the tabs back like they where in safari 3 - under the address bar. I have search on here and also in google, but they did not retrieve much.

so just the other day, I noticed that my safari window was fading transparent any time I would make it an inactive window, for example by clicking onto the desktop. I don't know why or how this could have happened, although the only thing I remember installing recently enough was "Inquisiter" for Safari, but I've uninstalled that and it still seems to be happening.
I'm using the most recent version of the Safari 4 beta in case you needed to know.
I guess it's not really a BIG deal since it doesn't really harm my ability to do anything in OS X, but I'm just a little confused as to how this happened in the first place. Does anybody know why or how this happened and how I could disable this?
Here's a video of it happening just to help you understand what's happening:[URL}

I have an MBA 2011 with 10.7.4 and Safari 5.1.7. I am very shortsighted and have struggled with the poor contrast levels between tabs and the rest of the Safari UI. My solution has been to switch off tabs, use windows instead. and configure my right option key as an App Expose shortcut. This works very nicely, but the only fly in the ointment is that when I click on a link I wish to open in a new window, it defaults to always opening in a new ACTIVE window, when I'd usually prefer it to open in the background as per tabs.
I have checked and unchecked the option in the 'tabs' preference pane with no luck- do I need to re login to make this stick? CMD-Click works to a point, but it's not reliable, and I find it finicky, even though I've routed it to a touchpad gesture through BetterTouchTool. Is there any other way to force safari to open new windows in the background - perhaps by adding a new item to the context menu? I'd really like to resolve this as I'd love to make the switch from Chrome to Safari, especially with ML coming very soon.

I just got a new MBA and I have never had a multi-touch mac before. I saw once that you can swipe finger gestures to go from tab to tab in safari. How do I do that?

OK, I'm a little stumped by this: I open a new tab that is blank...not even showing history. When I type in an address on the blank tab (2nd tab), the 1st tab changes and the 2nd tab stays blank. In order to view multiple pages, I have to use New Window. After several windows.

So, I have been using Safari for a while now, I like it for the most part but one thing that bugs me is how the tabs work.
I open alot of tabs, which works good, but when I select a tab and close it it goes to the tab to the left. When I close a tab I would like to go be viewing the last selected tab. Eg, if I am on tab one, and open a new tab to view something, then close that new tab, and it happens to be tab 10, I want my view to be tap 1 again. Right now it goes to tab 9 if I close tab 10

In the new Safari 4 released today, is there any way to bring back the tabs on the title bar? I loved this because, believe it or not, that extra space really enhances my browsing.

On safari if you open a lot of tabs they use to all compress so you can see all your tabs. Can anyone confirm on safari 4 that you can't do this anymore?
If you open a collection of say 19 tabs, you can't see them all at the same time

I want to be able to open new tabs automatically when I click in a top site link. At present it only opens the clicked website in the same window/tab. I've tried defaults write com.apple.safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true. This does nothing. It has worked before i updated to Snow Leopard. I must be missing something.

I tend to like to keep a lot of tabs open at once, but once I try to open a twelfth, there is no more room and it goes off to a side-bar. Is there any way to have safari make a second row of tabs for folks like me?

[URL] ctrlSwitcher is nice but having to press ctrl with a number with one hand is uncomfortable. Is there another software that is similar but offers CMD key combination instead of the CTRL? I asked this on here [URL] but nobody found an answer to it.

I have tried all your online support facilities to try and gain an answer to this highly irritation and obstructing technical issue with YOUR software. Safari tabs keep automatically reloading - it appears you are well aware of this technical issue as there are people complaining on the community (most of which I cannot follow as I am not an IT expert) - where is your support? What are you doing about this problem?

I usually have several tabs open in Safari. Sometimes when I reopen safari, it only opens 1 or 2 of my tabs, and then I have to dig through my history to find the other pages. This is at least the 3rd time this has happened and I'm getting sick of it.

I will browse the internet, click back on a tab, and the site will refresh. Highly annoying for when you are streaming radio, music etc.If I am downloading, when the page refreshes, the download stops, so I have to start again.

I am having issues with an "inactive plug-in" message in Safari when I want to do something using a Java plug-in. I searched the communities and sure enough, when I opened Java preferences the box next to "enable applet plug-in and Web Start applications" the box was unchecked so I checked it. Unfortunately, when I go back into preferences, the box is once again unchecked. I did find out that I had a Trojan in the user.jar file associated with java but despite taking care of that issue (which for all I know is not related), this issue persists. All of my software is up to date and from what I gather uninstalling and reinstalling Java is not an option and should not need to be fone.

Yes you guessed it, it's about the small air. I wish there was a hack to let you have the safari 4 beta tabs on top a la (the otherwise unremarkable) chrome. I can't find one though...

I just switched from Firefox to Safari, but I am really starting to miss the ability to close tabs by clicking them with the middle mouse button (scroll wheel)Is there a way to do this in Safari, or are then any better ways to close tabs withouth having to click the little close button to the left of them?

I'm a long - very long - time user of Firefox but would like to switch to Safari as FF seems to suck lots of CPU on my Mac (in fact it seems to do so on any *nix OS ) but there's one thing that I can't get used to, which is the Close Tab button being on the left of the tabs in Safari whereas it's on the right in FF.
OK, so there's nothing inherently better about them being on the right, it's just that I've got so used to it that I can't seem to break the habit of clicking over to the left-hand side of a tab when i select it which of course in Safari closes the damn thing. What makes it even more annoying is that there doesn't appear to be a Re-open Last Closed Tab command in Safari as there is in FF (Cmd-Shift-T).
Is there an undocumented command-line option to switch the close buttons to the right-hand side and/or a Re-open Last Closed Tab command?

Whenever I drag a tab out of the tab bar to make it open in a new window, it shows the window thumbnail and will not open in a new window (hangs up). Yes, I am letting go of the trackpad and it still does not work. I have tried removing the Safari plist and still no work.

I would love to get rid of the four finger swipe left/right that switches applications and replace it with switching tabs in Safari. I have Googled this -- MultiClutch doesn't recognize four finger swipe. Can anyone think of solutions?
I would use Firefox, but twisting is really annoying.

Just recently I took my 13" MacBook Pro (Late 2010 Model) to my local Apple Store. When I brought it there they fixed my problem, but in the mean time they had to completely delete and uninstall Safari and Google Chrome off of my laptop. Before the apple store, my Safari would always open pop-ups and links in a new tab, now they open up in a new window. how to change it so they open in new tabs? The reason I need this changed is I might have unecessary websites open, and they would just be taking up space.
