View 5 RepliesUsing a new MacBook (C2D, 2.16 GHz) but am multibooting with number of Linux OSes. To make OS X writable from Linux, I need to remove journaling from the OS X partition. So, I go to Disk Utility and here's the info available about my Mac OS X partition: Quote:
Mount Point :/Capacity :113.0 GB (121,332,826,112 Bytes)
Format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled)Available :54.2 GB (58,217,304,064 Bytes)
Owners Enabled :YesUsed :58.8 GB (63,115,522,048 Bytes)
Number of Folders :115,197Number of Files :436,726
t looks like it's journaled so I should be able to disable journaling, right? now I go to File and look for a Disable Journaling option. But it's not there. What's there is Enable Journaling but even this is grayed out.
Anyone know how to disable Flip4Mac and QuickTime so that I can use Windows Media Player 9? I need to use WMP9 on a couple of websites that do not work with Flip4Mac/QuickTime. Previously I had just opened the WMV Upgrade that is in the Flip4Mac folder and unchecked Use Flip4Mac WMV Browser plug-in and then relaunched Safari. But now even when I uncheck Flip4Mac, it, and QuickTime continue to open.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI would like to find an inexpensive mini recording device for journaling... audio quality not a big concern... but something I could speak into then easily transfer to and archive on my MacBook. I would transfer like this often, so would like something that came with an app to capture it easily, via USB, for example, or wirelessly via BlueTooth.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently changed the iTunes Media Folder default location to a different area on my drive. I waited a couple minutes and the files did not move. I was unaware you had to go into your settings and also select to consolodate files. Since the files didn't move I reselected my default location and kept trying to go back and forth a couple times. After letting it sit for a couple more minutes I noticed over 200 GB's of files were missing. I looked in each folder I tried to change the default Media Folder location to but they were not in either of them. I have also ran multiple system file recover programs and been unable to find them.

If you can stream the Mac as a media server on your PS3 just like how it does on Windows for Windows Media Player....
View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm looking at the specs page for the MacBook Pro and it reads this...
Your MacBook Pro comes standard with a 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive. Choose a hard drive with a faster speed for greater performance. Or you can choose a solid-state drive that offers enhanced durability.
Basically suggesting that the HDD option has a performance advantage over the SSD, but is this the case? I always thought SSDs could read & write quicker because they use solid-state flash memory as opposed to hard disks.
I want to go with the 256GB SSD but I want to know how it ranks in speed.
I have a question regarding Time Machine functionality. Here's my situation. I have two hard drives in my Pro: one that operates as a Boot drive, and one for storage. Right now I have Time Machine set up to backup my storage drive, but I was wondering if it was possible to have plug in a second external drive and use it to back up the Boot drive. I searched for a similar thread, but couldn't really find anything. Has anybody successfully done this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been doing some reorganizing lately, including updating my file structure from My Music to My Media, with Music, Books etc within it. I did this using the built-in iTunes option (File->Library->Organize Library->Reorganize files in the folder "iTunes Media"). I have both "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" switched on.
When I performed this reorganization I noticed that the media folder was still called "My Music", not "My Media", though the directories within for Music, Books etc were all there and organized correctly. So I renamed the folder to "My Media" and updated this name in the Advanced Preferences by changing "iTunes Media folder location."
When I now add new items to the library I find they are being added to the directory My Media, and not to the media-specific subdirectory (Music or Books or whatever) even though the entries within iTunes itself appear in the appropriate media subsection.

I have searched but I can't seem to find an answer to this question...
I have 4 x 500MB drives in my Mac Pro and 4 x 500MB external firewire drives.
Currently I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone each internal drive to it's respective backup. ie Drive 1 > Backup 1, Drive 2 > Backup 2 etc
Is it possible to use Timemachine in a similar way? so that each internal drive has it's own corresponding Timemachine backup?
I work in litigation support, and I end up working overtime a lot, and I also work weekends fairly often, and there are times when I am sitting around waiting for the machines to finish processing the data I give it. This could take hours, so I end up with a lot of time just waiting. I have been looking for a media server that I could use to watch movies on my Mac that I have in my apartment from the computers at work. I have not had any luck finding any. All the ones I found were just for home networks for streaming to another computer on the network or a PS3 or 360. I do know that VLC is capable of doing what I want, but I'm having a b*tch of a time getting it to work.
View 10 Replies View RelatedThe last PC left on my network has been relegated to being used solely as a media server which I use tversity to push media to my PS3 wirelessly. Now its been working out relatively well but I would like to be able to be rid of the PC and simply integrate this function into my Mac. Also, my PS3 only contains an 80GB HDD so its a constant issue of manually moving and erasing content on the PS3. Doing research on how to accomplish this is making my head spin with all the different ways I could do this. I also have a separate issue of backing up all the macs manually every week via a USB HDD. Ideally I would like to just add a bunch of external storage to the PS3 and stream the content once and be done, but then I'm still stuck with the PC and it still does not address the backup issue. I know time capsule would work, but I already have plenty of storage and a good router. I'm willing to spend the money on whatever I need but would like to do this as efficiently as possible with the hardware I already have if possible.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm considering getting the base Mini and using it as a media hub to replace my AppleTV. I've hacked my AppleTV to run Netflix, Boxee, etc., but playback in Firefox can be slow. The only issue is the lack of Blu-Ray in the mini which would mean getting a Blu-Ray drive and cracking the mini open. Seems like a lot of work but it could replace my Sony Blu-Ray DVD player leaving only my Denon receiver, Cable box and Mac Mini.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am looking to pick up an old Power Mac G4 and use it as a media server. Right now I have a 1.6 AMD Athlon doing this running Windows XP. I will only be using this to stream movies to my tv. The Athlon does perfectly fine, but a few hundred bucks is worth getting windows entirely out of my house.
I want to make sure to pick up one of the Power Macs that can address a drive larger than 128gb, which I believe puts me at about an 800mhz G4.
My question is... Who else is using a G4 as a media server to stream videos over to their tv? If you do have a setup like this how well is it running and please post the specs.
Itunes - Tries to "determine" gapless playback information everytime it starts up, won't work when you got your media over a network share.
Cog - It would be the best media player IF it didn't have so many bugs.
Songbird - I can't use my native keyboard media switching capabilities on the macbook pro. Also, it's slow.
So what else is there? (has to have a playlist)
Has anyone seen this doc?
Anyone managed to do this with a macbook pro, snow leopard and a new time capsule?

I'm trying to make this a reality, but although Eyeconnect is switched on in the system preferences the PS3 does not appear with any Eyeconnect media server. Is there anything I can try for this? Maybe a plug in?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a mint condition iBook G3 for an absolute steal, but the only problem is it has OS X 10.2.8 on it. I have Tiger but it's on a DVD and this iBook doesn't happen to have a DVD drive on it - just the CD-ROM. I can't really install much of any updated apps (Adobe Reader, Flash player, newer web browsers, etc etc) with 10.2.8 so it's crucial I get it on there. I tried using an external DVD drive I have but no go - the disc never popped up.
My only thoughts on how I could get this on there would be to install it from a .iso image somehow or to use a flashdrive. How would I go about doing this? I'm only vaguely experienced in using OS X so I don't know the programs well enough to know what to download or use - something that's just a trial would be fine if I can use something to mount a .iso image of my Tiger disc that I can put on the machine from a flash drive and install it that way. This is my only Mac so the other computers in my house which I could manipulate the Tiger disc on are Windows 7 based.
I really want to update this iBook so I can see webpages properly (Safari 1.0 is the newest I'm allowed to install and I can't update flash!). I saw someone being able to install it from an iPod but they used the firewire - I have an iPhone 3G if it's easier to somehow install it from that. If this were a PC laptop I already know of Windows based ISO mounting programs, I just need to know of something I can install on an old 10.2.8 install (Something that I cannot seem to find anywhere!!) so either that or the ability to turn a flash drive into what would allow the computer to install Tiger straight off the drive as if it were the disc.
I have a 15" late 2008 MBP. The primary usages for my computer are: internet, and watching recorded TV shows from my laptop to my TV (I have my MBP hooked up into my TV).
Given that I want to store all of my DVD's on my computer, and I also download and watch TV shows (in .mkv format) on my computer, I'm looking for some advice on how to best use my MBP to organize, and watch tv shows.
My questions are to people who have similar usages/setups on their MBP:
1. Did you upgrade the HD for storage? If so, what size do you have?
2. What program do you use to manage your media? Since the files are in .mkv format, I can't use iTunes (which I use for music and audiobooks).
3. Is their a better HD format than .mkv to watch these in? Would I be better off converting into iTunes compatible format?
We just bought a mac mini with 2.5 GHz to act as our media server. We wanted to be able to stream, which it handles nicely. But now our desktop has fallen to disrepair and I am tempted to take the 2.5 Ghz mac mini as our desktop and buy a cheaper mac mini for our server. Will this work?

I'm considering using a Mac Mini as a media centre computer and supporting it with a eyetv dongle. Does anyone have an opinion on it's ability to do so. eg. Noise, speed, Graphics power? If it's not going to cut it, is there an alternative? I'm not keen on the Apple TV given it's limitations out of the box.
