OS X :: App On Dock Keeps Removing Itself?
Dec 4, 2010
On my MacBook Pro (Late 2007, Discrete, Snow Leopard), Adobe Photoshop CS5 keeps removing itself from my dock for no reason. I'll drag the app to my dock and within about 5 seconds, the app simply disappears from the dock. I have tried dragging it back multiple times, restarting my computer, etc, but it always disappears within about 5 seconds.

I shall explain my problem.
Um, a few weeks ago[2 wks to be exact], i went overseas. Upon coming back, I on-ed my imac and found something very weird. There were icons at the bottom of my screen appearing to be a '?'. At that point of time I didn't know how to make em appear normal, thus i moved em to the thrash. I tried to open it earlier when it was a "?" but it wun open. However, what I didn't know and which was a careless mistake, i moved my microsoft office[entourage, word, ppt, i moved em into one folder] into the thrash as it appeared to be a question mark. However, when i checked the thrash, i saw no such folder... How do i fix this?

I can't get any of the apps off the dock. I've tried clicking and dragging them outside the dock and a little cloud of smoke appears near the mouse cursor. But then, When I release the app, it just pops back to the dock. I have tried dragging it to the trash too.

I want to get rid of the pop-up labels which appear when you mouse over dock icons. I've routed around in the dock plist, and found that I can achieve this for items that are permanently in my dock by just blanking their 'file-label' string in the dock plist, but was wondering if there is a way to do this for all items in the dock?
I've tried adding every logical 'key' to the plist file, I can think of, with a false boolean value, but to no luck. I'm pretty new to OS X.

as an extension to my question regarding RAM utilization, I've decided to upgrade my RAM. I went through the process of removing the underside of my MBP. After taking the screws out and mentally marking which slot they came out of (some are of different size), I pulled the lid up at the black trim area (the "neck" of the display mount) as this was the easiest way to get a non-damaging grip on the metal underside -- read: I avoided using a screw driver on the lid. As I started to lift, I was surprised at the amount of force I needed to use in order to remove the lid; something near the center of the cover was still holding the lid to the underside of the body. In fact, the amount of force I needed to use made me pause to question if I missed an important step other than simply removing the screws. I decided to "go for it" and applied more pressure while pulling the lid up and away from the body and heard a "pop" noise.

I've been trying to change my docks theme for the past few days but have been unable. I've used Candybar, Dock Library etc. and none of them seem to work. I'm really annoyed because it used to work for me. Any suggestions on how I can remedy this problem?

Today the OS X dock on my late '08 MacBook Pro 15" stop working like normal. It used to be, when an App was open, the icon would appear in the dock with a sort of highlight.
Now, the apps run fine but no longer appear in the dock. If I minimize it, it does show as a running app in the left hand side, but that isn't what I want it to do. Is there a quick way to get it to work again?

I have created other accounts on my computer previously and the dock on those is fine...I have looked in Activity monitor and it flashes on and then disappears in there.I tried using terminal to 'killall Dock', but this did nothing...Am using Leopard on Alu iMac.

I would like to move my windows partition from a shared disk with OS X & Windows7 to its own drive. I have true image so that should be easy. I have 2 questions1 Do I need to run bootcamp setup on the new drive before cloning?2 On the old windows partition that I would like to turn into a OS X partition can I just reformat that partition to wipe out windows or is there another step. The other half of the drive is my boot disk so I do not want to reformat the whole drive.

I am not very techie so please accept apologies for a naive question.
I am getting delivery of my new macbook pro today. I have already received advice on how to transfer all my software and data over (thanks). Once done I will be selling my Powerbook.
Is it ok just to remove my personal data? Or do i need to do a complete reinstall?
If i need to do a complete reinstall i have a question. I cant remember where ive put my original discs but ive bought some which are original panther install to a powerbook. My powerbook runs on Tiger (ibought the upgrade discs last year but have put them with the originals no idea where!!). So do i just put in the powerbook install discs that i have just bought which will be for panther or can i just remove my data?

I'm trying to remove the front fan assembly on the 2006 Mac Pro and it's giving me a hard time. The top part near the screw popped out easy but the bottom is stuck. I'm not sure how much force to use or in which direction to pull, straight out of the case (2) or upwards toward the hard drive bays (1)?

In windows, I have to click a taskbar icon and cancel the function of a USB device before it can be safely removed. New to Mac OS, and wondered if there is a similar process or whether a flash drive/etc. Can just be unplugged.

I would like some help before I do something I might regret. I separated the whole reason for what I want to do in that quote, or if you would like to help me you can go directly to my question below.I have a Mac mini, and connected in it I have a 500GB firewire drive from Iomega, from which I run OSX Leopard. The internal 80GB drive is used for some backups. I've been on this configuration for about 4 months. But now the firewire drive is really driving me nuts because of its noise. It's just so incredibly noisy when the computer is doing ANYTHING at all. Opening any application makes me feel the computer is slow because it looks like it's going to explode of so much disk reading/writing. When I used the Mac mini it was all smooth and silent.

I also can't understand how they got on there in the first place but that's another matter.

I want to completely remove final cut studio from my machine before I install Logic Studio. I used App Cleaner and then emptied the trash.
But still, when i put in the Logic install disc, it says it detects an install of Final Cut Studio 2 or older.......
And in software update it still has updates for final cut. But with the application being removed it shouldn't try to upgrade it right?
What else do I need to do to get everything off my machine?

On the 13 inch macbook - can you pop off the keys individually and put them back on? Similar to say how you would on a standard keyboard? I wanted to know if anyone has done this? I thought I read in another post that you couldn't do this on the Macbook without removing the entire case? One of my kids spilled some soda on my keyboard and it is sticky. I wanted to know if I could just pop them off and clean it or if they don't just pop off.

I used to remove my Safari search bar using this tip:
Quote:
In the Finder, control-click on Safari and select Show Package Contents. Navigate into Contents Resources English.lproj. Create a backup of ToolbarItems.nib, then open the original in Interface Builder.
Set the main window's view mode to List (middle button in toolbar)
Navigate into (by clicking the 'reveal' triangles) Window Content View, and you'll see two Split View entries. Open each of those, and you'll see a Custom View and a Web Search Field. Delete the Web Search Field from both Split View entries. (Just select them and press Delete.)
Save the file and quit Interface Builder. In this newest update of safari, however, this appears to be impossible. Is there any way to remove the search bar anymore?
