OS X :: Any Alternatives To Use DVD Player For Better Quality DVD Playback?
Jul 20, 2010
I just bought a new Macbook Pro 13" and popped in a DVD to test out the playback. Nothing is wrong with the DVD player program. It just seems the playback quality is not too great.
Are there any other programs for use with Snow Leopard that will play DVD's better on my Macbook? I've heard VLC is a great alternative but not sure if it actually plays DVD's with better quality.

In FCPX 10.1.3 I was able to set in Preferences the Playback Quality to High Quality. I just purchased FCPx 10.1.4. It has NO such High Quality Option for Playback Quality.
Now all my still clips are blurred badly. Is there an option to set a High Quality Playback Option. Or can I download 10.1.3, the level where that worked ?

I have several problems with my NEW Imac. First is trying to archive photos. I select the correct amount of photos from IPhoto to fill a DVD. I initiate the burn process. Near the end of the burn I get a message "error." No explanation, no advice just 'forget it.' I have wasted a few discs before abandoning this operation but my photos are mounting up and I fear losing them if they are not archived. Any ideas? Second is a major problem with creating a slideshow in IDVD. get a faultless preview. Excellent image quality from my photos. I burn a DVD. I then try to play it and it jams up on the 3rd photo. I skip forward and it jams again after one or two photos. Also the quality of the photos is terrible, the dissolves are jumpy and the 'grain' and noise of the photos makes them look like 5th generation VHS. BUT it will play on my $60 DVD player to my television. Same horrible, unacceptable quality and there is always one 'glitch' in the sound, which of course wasn't there in preview. These applications are quite useless unless something can be done to correct them. I'm hoping for a magic button somewhere that will unlock these problems. Third is unrelated to photos. My Epsom colour printer will not print with the font that I have selected for my work. It's there in the font book and my laser printer finds it and prints with it. The Epsom will print this font from my G3 but not from my Imac...?

QuickTime Player (we have version 10.1) seems to play movies at a minimum movie size of 480 pixels wide. Smaller movies (say 80, 200, etc. pixels wide) get enlarged to 480 pixels wide when played, making them blurry. Movie Inspector confirms the original size of these movies (of various formats) and that the current player window size is 480 pixels wide. They can't be viewed any smaller (either by the window resize handle or from the View menu). We frequently make moves from slices through small sub-volumes of 3D reconstructions and it doesn't seem that this latest version of QuickTime Player can be used to view these small-sized movies any longer. Am I missing a preference or checkbox somewhere in QuickTime Player?

Started archiving all my old photos and creating dvds. started off using iphoto which is great for compiling a quick slideshow to a couple of music tracks. i then imported these to idvd and created my first dvd project which i was pretty pleased with for a first attempt. The only thing i found annoying was that i could not link all the slideshows together in idvd so that they played one after another, instead you had to come back to the menu and start the next one...so i thought i would import these slideshow movies into imovie and create a complete movie with chapters, titles etc. but when i did this i noticed that the quality of the slideshow in imovie was very noticeably worse.
being new to mac i wasnt sure what was up so i thought about importing the photos directly into imovie and working with them there. but once again the quality was really poor compared to the iphoto and idvd slideshows. after this i though maybe its just a preview problem and all will be well when i burn them to dvd and watch them on tv...so i burnt a dvd with one slideshow created in iphoto and imported into idvd and also put on a movie of the same slide show that id imported into imovie and back.
anyway long story short quality still better in slide show created in iphoto.

When I export my sequence into a Quicktime movie the quality is much worse than it appears in the editor. More specifically, it looks washed out.

I recently switched to Mac OS X and love it except for iTunes. I hate the way it encodes tracks and the difficulty it poses in easily accessing one's music library. When I had Windows XP, I used to use foobar2000 or Winamp. I'd love to find something similar for OS X. Is there any alternative to iTunes or should I just resign myself to using this app?

I know that OWC and Transintl both sell kits up to 32GB ram. I was looking to put in 32GB ram in my newly ordered mac pro 2009. I expected the ram prices to be somewhere near the 32GB kit price of the previous mac pros at OWC but they are more then double.
Does anyone know of a brand I could purchase maybe elsewhere (8GB kits) and just get 4 of those requesting they be from the same lot.
Just looking for other alternatives then 2 stores.

I want to move my Boot Camp partition to a new hard drive, something which I would have used Winclone for in the past. Now it's been discontinued and seems to not work under Snow Leopard I need to find another way. Are there any other programs to complete the same task?

I have successfully converted my dad to a Mac and he purchased his first Macbook earlier today. The only program he absolutely needs for work is MS Access. Unfortunately, MS Office for Mac doesn't include MS Access. I have searched the forums and seen a few alternatives with Open Office being a pretty popular (and free!) solution. My question is this, if all my dad needs to do is be able to open MS Access documents and do minor revisions, is Open Office a solution that will meet his needs? Again, all he is really going to be doing is opening MS Access documents and reading their data.

I have a Mac Pro and the stock 2600 installed. Having waited for months on my preorder of the Radeon 3870, its still not in stock, and its been delayed for another 3 weeks in the UK. I have a couple of questions, Is it possible to flash the PC 3870 card to work in OS X? Ive had a quick search on this forum, and Im unsure as to what the results conclude. What is the highest performance mainstream graphics card that can run on the Mac Pro, officially or unofficially? I need the card by this weekend.

I have been using TextEdit up until now, but have recently realised a few of it's limitations. E.g., I had a file from an app I use that needed to be edited and a small bit of code C+P'd into it. TextEdit opened the file but showed it as a blank file? I downloaded and installed TextWrangler and it worked perfectly. However, I don't really like TextWrangler all that much, and was wondering whether you had any alternatives that you use that are better than TextEdit?

I have just convinced my parents to buy a Mac as I was sick of trying to help them with the bugs of windows. They are struggling a bit with the transition so often on the phone. I would like to be able to see their desktop but don't really want to pay 300 for remote desktop. Are there are any other ways?

I have been a Mac user for a long time and have always tried to convince my old man from jumping onboard the Mac bandwagon. He tells me that the only reason why he does not get a Mac is because of a specific software that he uses for his business. My father owns his own business and works from home, so he really needs just one computer, and so far, that one computer meets his needs due to the compatibility of the software with his Dell PC.
However, I really want to "update" his XP workstation by getting him a new Mac, but I am afraid it would go unused without this software that he needs for business. Does anyone know of any good alternatives to Floorplan 3d? I am really not that familiar with software for this industry. Here is a link to the software that he uses for his business: [URL]. Also, I am aware that Windows can be installed on a Mac and that is not a solution that I am seeking.

alternatives to mathtype or endnote for use with iWork on Mac? I know that in iWork '09 these two are offered, but they also both come with a good price tag. I would mostly need a mathtype alternative but an endnote one would also be great if there exist any.

Well, I am learning how important drag and drop is on OSX. There is no Cut/Paste of files and many tricks require dragging on top of an apps' icon. So, I hate the tap to click and I can't stand the unibody trackpad click and drag. I can't seem to keep it depressed and drag across the entire High Res screen. Is there any alternative? Say a key I can hold to lock the click so I don't have to keep the pad depressed?

I've recently been running into problems with mouse clicks not being picked up by OS X. At first I thought it was my mouse, but it seems to happen with other USB mice as well. Turns out the problem is being caused by USB Overdrive. Seems there is a problem with it and 10.6.x. Turns out that I am not the only one with the problem and no one has heard from the developer of a workaround or patch to fix the problem.
I use a Logitech MX518 and Logitech won't release Mac drivers for it, so I need something like USB Overdrive to get full functionality. Does anyone here know of any alternatives to USB Overdrive that work with Snow Leapord?

My wife's been working with Entourage for the past several months as she likes having all of her PIM data integrated in one place. In particular she likes the project view as this lets her see all of the relevant files, emails, notes, tasks and calendar appointments for a specific class (she's in grad school) in one place. Unfortunately she also wants to sync that information to her phone (a Nokia N82), and Entourage does not play nice with sync services. Every time we've tried setting up Entourage to sync with iCal so she can then sync with her phone we've run into a host of problems, including losing all of her calendar appointments and getting a massive number of duplicates.
As such I'm looking for an alternative to Entourage that duplicates the Project view features. The most important items for my wife are email, notes, files and calendar, she wants to be able to go to one place and look at all those items for individual classes. I've looked at Contactizer and Daylight, but both are a bit pricey, complicated and don't cover everything she wants, in particular they seem to lack the ability to look into the contents of a defined folder and track the files in there as Entourage can.

I am looking for a wireless router to use at my apartment. I like the Airport Extreme, but it is a bit pricey. The things I like include: 802.11n The ability to chose between 2.4 and 5 GHz bands (or both with the latest revision) Gigabit Ethernet ports USB port for printer or storage There are, of course, several routers out there that offer many of these features.

I got a Speck hard shell for my 17'' unibody and I love it in all respects (beautiful, MBP doesn't run hoter, rubberized, tough) except for its weight (over 1 lb). It tips the weight of the MBP from very bearable into too heavy. Any alternatives? I'm not looking for protection from dings but just small scratches.

After many years of using a PeeCee for my personal machine, I've switched over to Mac. I've never been a fan of trackpads for pointers/mice until I purchased my uMBP (2 weeks ago today). The MBP trackpad is the first trackpad I've used and liked.
I have played with the magic mouse a few times, and I just don't like the operation of it. It's too low to the desktop and I'd prefer something that is stationary for "mousing"...
Is there a good trackpad alternative for the desktops that uses identical gestures to the uMBP trackpad? I've seen the Wacom Bamboo family and see that they support gestures -- but I don't know if the gestures are identical between something like this and the uMBPs trackpad.
