MacBook :: Unable To Install And Restart Software Updates
Jun 15, 2010
i can't seem to update my macbook with any of its updates. I try to install and restart the ones that need to restart, but it doesn't even move a inch when restarting. I've left it for like a day complete to see if the restart would move in the bar, but it just stays in the beginning.

Every time I try to update the software (when the Software Update" panel opens up), I can download the software but after downloading it says "Unable to install software" "An unexpected error occcured".....
I have plenty of HD space (100G available out of 320G), and I've tried repairing permissions, restarting etc but I still get the same error message.

A security update (from like March or something) and Safari 5 just simply won't install. They are both downloaded, but when I click install it either shows a spinning loading thing for a few seconds, or the install thing for a few seconds, but then it just restarts.

I've noticed that all of a sudden my MacBook Pro stopped installing updates. Lately, the only one that was installed up to the end was an HP printer update. Updates from Apple or from Microsoft Office will not get to the end of the process. It doesn't matter if I try via Software Update or directly from the Apple site. What happens it that the process goes up to the point I click "install" (after choosing the volume - which is the main HD), then nothing happens - no dialog box, nothing. I can click "install" a hundred times (the button remains available). Then I have to quit the installation process.

I can't install updates. When I do and then restart, the screen goes blue and then to the purple space image. It gets stuck there with the arrow cursor and nothing else. (I end up having to turn off the computer manually.) I've tried a safe boot and a disc repair, but to no avail. I'm suspicious the updates aren't installing, because firefox has started doing weird things and refuses to download most files.

So yesterday I updated a bunch of programs on my macbook via the auto update function. Some of the programs I updated required a restart, which I performed when it prompted me to. Now my macbook won't restart all the way. It turns on and gives the chime then goes to a gray screen with an apple on it. After about a minute a spiral loading image appears underneath the apple and about a minute after that the computer shuts off and immediately restarts again only to do the same thing (its stuck in some sort of cycle). I've tried resetting the PRAM and a few other things but nothing seems to work.

So a while back I had final cut pro installed, and eventually deleted cause I no longer needed it. I used AppCleaner when removing to try and make sure I got it all.
Well every time I do a software update it wants to install "Pro Applications Update" and "Prokit Updates" Which are updates for final cut pro and its related apps.
Any idea how I can stop it from wanting me to install these updates for something I no longer have?

Recently, I tried updating an app on my Macbook Air, specifically Red Crucible 2. I clicked update, it started downloading, reached 10 MB, then started downloading from the beginning again, and it kept looping. I have 23 GB free, so I'm sure it's not an issue with free space. I tried downloading other updates and the same thing happens again, it reaches 10 MB then starts downloading again!

My imac will not shut off/restart or let me download the new updates because it says I have to quit the TextEdit first, but it will not let quit it. When I open up the TextEdit the Quit option is in a faded black/Grey color and does not do anything when I click on it.

I keep getting a message saying "Software Update can't connect to the update server. Make sure you're connected to the Internet, and then try again." I'm connected to the Internet, so that's not the issue. I've tried rebooting, and using Disk Utility to repair permissions. I've also tried waiting and trying again later. This is the third day in a row I've gotten this message.

Software update 4.0.6 has found Safari 5.1.7, iTunes 10.6.1, Java for Mac OX X 10.6 Update 8, iLife Support 9.0.4, and Remote Desktop Client update 3.5.3.
Have tried to download & install as a group and individually. Have downloaded Safari and Java to the hard drive and tried to install them. Also I've purchased Lion and tried twice to download and install but it reports an error at 4.1 GB and aborts, driving my downloads into pay-per-extra MB on my cable service.
Have also tried safe boot and disconnected (home) network.

I have a late 2008 aluminium macbook, recently "clean" installed snow leopard, everything cool apart from the recurring issue with adobe acrobat pro 9 64bit pdf printer driver, anyway. How do I know whether or not I have the apple firmware updates from this site [URL]. Is there any way of checking or have they just be integrated with the snow leopard install. Also is it still ok the drive makes a noise when you either turn the macbook on and / or when the macbook comes out of sleep. Apple fixed this with a firmware update for the imac and etc, has there been one for the Macbook?

I have a 2008 5th generation black macbook. It's a good 4 years old, so I figured I'd wipe my computer all together and reinstall os x. Once I did, everything is working fine until I do the software updates. Safari even looks like it's from 2008 lol. The issue is, it downloads the updates fine, but once it restarts and begins the actual install, it gets to the point where it's "Configuring update" and completely stops in it's tracks. I've tried letting it do its thing and walked away, because maybe it would actually take a while but no, the blue progress bar is in the same exact point. So I'm stuck with leopard 10.5.2

I have had problems with my macbook grey screening and having to shut down by holding down the power button (I get the screen with the instructions how to reboot in 5 different languages). When I start it up again I get the panic report from the shut down.In Utilities, Disk Utility I ran the Repair Disk and received the message that the disk was damaged and I had to do the reapir from the install disk.
So I put the install disk in (came with the laptop, 10.6) and I tried to repair the disk using the disk utility from the install disk. Two problems: when I insert the disk, restart while holding down the 'C' key, nothing happens (stays at the grey screen) until I let go of the 'C' key and then I get another Panic and have to reboot manually. So I tried inserting the install disk with the laptop already on and clicking on the disk to hopefully get to the disk utility or at least reinstall the OS, which leads to problem two: I receive the message 'Mac OS X 10.6 cannot be installed on this computer.' My laptop is currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

I've had my 13" MBA for a couple weeks now and have loved it. I was using it last night just fine and go to use it around noon today and it is completely unresponsive. I've tried all of the troubleshooting options available on the Apple website for those whose computers won't start up. I really don't want to have to bring this in to my not-so-local Apple Store which is almost two hours away and I really don't want all of my data erased.

I'm unable to shut down or restart my Macbook Pro (10.6.2) the problem only occurs when I have two users logged in. I type username and password as requested and hit shutdown or return and it just does nothing, the username and password box remains on the screen. I have just run Disk Warrior through the machine to no avail.

I installed a new 500 GB HD on my 13-inch mid 2010 Macbook Pro (since the original crashed). I successfully connected to the Disk Utility via the internet connection and started recovery from a recent Time Machine backup....but, the computer will not restart. It's been stuck in the grey screen with the Apple logo and rotating status bar all night. I shut it down and restarted, but it won't go past the grey screen state. I can't find any answers on the Support Page. Should I have first installed the Lion OS X first and then restored from the Time Machine backup?
Also, wondering if all my programs (2011 ILife & IWork and Microsoft Office) will be reinstalled with the back up? (I can't find my installation disks for ILife and IWork :-()

My iMac hard drive died and I got a new one installed from Apple and my dad's friend installed Leopard for me and he started to download and install the updates from Apple and I don't know if he stopped the install midway but when I tried to download and install them NONE of them install. I called Apple and they told me to try something in Disk Utility with "verify disk" and it didn't work still and then they sent me something about trying to Archive and Installing but it seems really complicated. Is there anything else I can try?

I ran software update and when the updates were finished downloading it told me to restart the computer. So I clicked restart. When I got to the blue screen with the turning gear it stayed on that screen for a while. Not just a minute or 2, I think at least 10 but possibly even more because I left the room for a while since it seemed to be doing nothing.
I came back in the room after a while and the computer was on the desktop. Should I be worried that it took so long to go from the blue screen with the turning gear to get to the desktop? Do you think my updates installed correctly, and would there be any way of knowing if they didn't?
