Having a bit more time, i stuffed up my iTunes library and can't fix it and would really appreciate any kind of advice.
A few things reg my mac and myself before I come to the core of the problem:
I have a macbook air, no 'extras' inside (normal 1.6GHz) and it's running at home with an airport and an external HDD of a few gig to store my data and backups. OS is Mac OS X 10.6.2 (10C540).
I am not a mac specialist and just started using mac roughly over a year ago and never got the real 'cores' but bit by bit I get there (I thought ).
And just btw I am not an english native speaker so I may phrase things 'funny' from time to time
I have my music, videos etc on my ext HDD and a copy of music on my mac as I like to have it with me 'on the road'.
As I was the only user it was just in my 'Music' folder
My bf just moved in and is wrapped by the mac anyway and had a user for a while. With his new iphone I *wanted* to copy the music to Users/Shared so we both can have it in our iTunes
This proofed to be not that easy as I couldn't give him access rights even though the music was in this 'shared' folder. With the 'information' of each folder I tried to give him access rights (rea & write) but even by doing so for some folders and their sub-folders, I still can't import these files into his library.
So there are my first (hopefully quite basic questions)
How can I give him access to all these music folders so he can load them into his iTunes? As I would like to prevent to click each folder and sub-folder - is there a way to speed this up?
Standing for this problems and having messed up my music a bit as the links of my itunes weren't updated to the new music location, I somehow (stupid stupid stupid) tried to make it work without making any backups of my library files and without having any in-dept knowledge about iTunes and how it actually works/ stores its information etc.
To cut a long story short: my whole iTunes it totally 'empty' : no movies, music, even iphone apps are there anymore and even when I connect my iphone nothing happens. I have no backup what-so-ever and unfortunately can't give you the steps I went to mess it up that way because I just panicked along the way and didn't trace my steps or stopped at the right moment to look up some handy and useful manuals/ guides. Would love to explain an interesting and maybe challenging error for you guys but that's the boring truth.
I was wondering if it makes sense if I de-intall iTunes now completely and then re-install it and import the music/ movies into both users iTunes and make a clean set up. As it is Christmas time I have a bit of time and this wouldn't bother me too much. So the question is here: would you recommend this / agree? Are there any tipps you would give me/ things to do to make this work?
And this of course still leave me with my access rights problems as all the music folders are under "shared" and my bf's account somehow doesn't have access to it. I have still a backup of that data on my ext HDD so I could delete it on my notebook and re-copy it to somewhere if I know where/ how to make it work.
Hope this is not too messy for you all to read through! I would really appreciate if I would get some hints/ tipps/ advice from you.
Oh something I forgot: before I wrote here I searched this forum and some others as well the apple standard help and tried to 're-create' my library but as deleted my rubbish bin within my mess-up-process I think I deleted the original files.
I think part of the whole problem is the missing back up and of course my half-knowledge of mac/ iTunes.

Is it possible for itunes to pull your media from two locations? What I am trying to do is to store my TV Shows and Movies on an external drive but store my music locally, but I want everything to be accessed through iTunes.

I recently changed the iTunes Media Folder default location to a different area on my drive. I waited a couple minutes and the files did not move. I was unaware you had to go into your settings and also select to consolodate files. Since the files didn't move I reselected my default location and kept trying to go back and forth a couple times. After letting it sit for a couple more minutes I noticed over 200 GB's of files were missing. I looked in each folder I tried to change the default Media Folder location to but they were not in either of them. I have also ran multiple system file recover programs and been unable to find them.Â

When importing songs into iTunes, the software by default is set to copy the music files to the iTunes media folder and convert them to .m4a format. This, of course, results in having two copies of each song after the import is done. Before I disable this option I'd like to know what you think are the pros and cons of having this option enabled/disabled.

I am using a 32 GB SDHC Card with my MacBookPro 13" running on Lion. As I put in the card the very first time I could use it properly, i.e. reading and writing. I have put about 10 GB music on it since I use the card only as audio source. The music plays just fine no matter in which device.Â
Recently, I wanted to put some more music on it but I do not have any rights to write on the card (only reading is permitted) even though I am using the same MBP. The card has the format FAT32 so no problem for Macs from this side. the lock on the card is not set to locked! As well, the card is pretty new and since I am able to properly read from it the contact plates can be assumed to work as they are supposed to, too.Â
why the rights to write have changed? Is this normal after it has been written on it the very first time? Can I (as administrator of my MBP) change the assignment of rights?Â
The Hard Disk Utility Program of Apple is not really useful in this case. All options are greyed out.Â

I already repaired the rights on the disk. Mac does not drive down, obviously after certain programs have been started. One of those programs is itunes. I have to use the power switch button for switching it off. Mac can be driven down normally immediately after start-up.

I am not being able to sync my iPad, after having been using it for more than a year now! I had been syncing my iPad2 with iTunes on my Windows Vista machine. After my Windows Vista Laptop crashed, I replaced it with a Macbook Air 128GB (MBA). Since hard disk space on the MBA is at a premium, I transferred my iTunes Media Library to a 64 GB USB drive.
Now I tried to sync my iPad with iTunes on my MBA. iTunes on MBA saw my iPad: sync started: backing up completed without any hitch: and then came the error message "The iPad 'Rishav's iPad' cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the selected items (additional 7.88 GB required)". I checked the available memory on my MBA, USB and iPad.
Details:
a. HDD of MBA: 86.6 GB out of 120.47 GB Free.
b. USB Drive where iTunes Media Library is located: 39.93 GB out of 64 GB Available.
c. iPad 2: 7.7 GB out of 58.1 GB Available.
Despite this availability of free memory, the sync is not going through. The memory utilization within my iPad, as seen graphically on iTunes on my MBA (when iPad is connected to MBA) is as follows:
a. Audio: 8.10 GB
b. Video: 7.30 GB
c. Photos: 7.50 GB
d. Apps: 14.00 GB
e. Books: 1.01 GB
f. Others: 2.60 GB
g. Free: 17.94 GB
How I can carry out my sync.

I've been doing some reorganizing lately, including updating my file structure from My Music to My Media, with Music, Books etc within it. I did this using the built-in iTunes option (File->Library->Organize Library->Reorganize files in the folder "iTunes Media"). I have both "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" switched on.Â
When I performed this reorganization I noticed that the media folder was still called "My Music", not "My Media", though the directories within for Music, Books etc were all there and organized correctly. So I renamed the folder to "My Media" and updated this name in the Advanced Preferences by changing "iTunes Media folder location."Â
When I now add new items to the library I find they are being added to the directory My Media, and not to the media-specific subdirectory (Music or Books or whatever) even though the entries within iTunes itself appear in the appropriate media subsection.Â

iTunes is playing and I hit the play/pause key (F8) the entire keyboard will go dark, but only if I'm pausing. it doesn't do it when I'm hitting the button to resume a song, only when I'm using it to pause one. the backlight sometimes takes minutes to come back on, at random, and sometimes it doesn't and I just have to turn it back on myself.

I have installed Parallels to run an embroidery software (Floriani) on my MacBook Air. Both Parallels and the Floriani are running fine and I can see my windows formatted external hard drive when in Floriani and can bring in files from it. But when I try to save a redesigned embroidery file to the external hard drive it tells me I can not because I do not have administrative rights. I have tried to also tried to copy embroidery files downloaded from the internet to my Macbook and get the same message. Since I am the administrator (and only user) of this laptop, how can I get access to the hard drive. I tried following the all the suggestions in the Help Center for setting permission but even though I can set the drive as a "shared" file I cannot see the "lock'" icon referred to and in the "Sharing and Permissions" it still says I can only read.Â

What im thinking now is, can I setup iTunes or even Media Player to see my iTunes library on the Mac side without actually copying it to Windows?

I was trying to change a file entry in the system files. After making the changes I clicked on "save" and was then told that I do not have the permission to write to this file. I checked the "get info" to this file and saw I can only read this file. I am however the administrator so why can I not make changes?
This is what I was trying to do:
Getting rid of Tynt in OSX
Mac OS/X
In Finder, from the Go menu, choose "Go to folder."
In the "Go to the folder" dialog, type "/etc/".
From the /etc/ folder window, open the "hosts" file in a text editor.
Add the following to the hosts file in its own line, using the site that applies to you:

127.0.0.1 tcr.tynt.com
Save and quit.
At this point I was told that my changes could not be saved as I have no rights.
In System Accounts I am set as the administrator. I am on automatic Login. I was asked for my password in order to save my settings in the text editor which I entered but was then again told that I do not have the permission. The "get info" on the host file shows me as read only. How can I change this?

how to save space on my MBA by pointing iTunes to my library on my Macbook Pro (While it is on). I've got sharing set up and I hold option while opening iTunes so that it asks me to choose my iTunes library. I try to point it to Shared > MBP > Username > Music > iTunes > iTunes library and it opens but doesn't show any of my media. Pointing iPhoto to my iPhoto library with a similar method works fine. Is there a file that I need to point it to hidden somewhere else? Apparently my media location on my MBP is iTunes > iTunes Media but it won't take that either.

As I'm sure you're aware, I want to setup a server with my 733 MHz DA G4.
Until I can get my hands on a copy of Tiger Server, I'd like to have an iTunes server to centralize my media. I've done some searches and couldn't find anything relevant.
I know I can just copy all the stuff to the G4 and make a shared library, but I'd like to be able to have the media transferrable from the client computers, i.e. putting it on an iPod because the G4 is in the basement which is a hassle to get to and a bit of a ***** shack.
My G4 has the following specs:
733 MHz G4
1 GB RAM
1x 60 GB HDD, 1x 40 GB HDD
Mac OS X 10.4.11, not server
The latest version of iTunes 8
A gigabit ethernet connection

I imported a video in to iTunes, and it came in as a movie. It's an educational video, so I thought it would be nice to set its media type to iTunes U. I did that, then clicked iTunes U in my left hand pane, and the video did not appear. I created a smart playlist where media kind = iTunes U, and there it was. So I figured I'd change it to Podcast. I changed it, and it didn't show up under Podcasts, (but again does appear under smart playlist). So I figured I'd change the media kind back to Movie, but now that media kind is no longer available from the dropdown list! My only choices are Music, Podcast, iTunes U, Audiobook, Voice Memo. How can I change the media kind to movie so it appears in my movies?

I just recently bought my first MBP and I have been busy transferring all my files from my Vaio to my MBP. I convert all my dvds to digital format and keep them on an external HDD (LaCie 1TB HDD) and was adding them to my iTunes on my MBP. I came across a problem trying to change the media kind for some of the videos.Â
I have several shows on my HDD (anime, Dexter, Walking Dead, etc.) but when I go to change the media kind to TV Show, it doesn't let me. The info on the folder says my MBP has "Read only" permission. How can I change this so I can read and write the files for my MBP? This is about the only snag I've come across trying to set up my MBP similar to my Vaio.Â

Afterwards, I downloaded an episode from the iTunes store and when I tried to watch it appears a warning "THIS MOVIE REQUIRES QUICKTIME WICH IS NOT SUPPORTED BY THIS VERSION OF ITUNES", I checked iTunes version (10.6.1) and Quicktime (no updates available).

I used an extension to control iTunes from within the game. It worked much as the media keys do now, with one (great) additional feature: the name of the song you unpaused or skipped to appeared briefly on the screen, Quicksilver style.
I'm loving the media keys but I really miss this feature. Has anyone heard of a plugin that accomplishes this? If not, does anyone know if it's possible or where a starting point for writing such a plugin is?

I have a macbook pro with a 150g HD and only 30g remaining. I'd like to know how you find where all this mass is located? From my own findings it would seem that I have at least 43g of iTunes content found C Stride - Music - iTunes I don't fully understand why i have this and indeed if i can delete it as I thought i had all my iTunes content on an external so not to tie up my lap top HD (500g with 230g of iTunes content). But, when I look in preferences on iTunes the media location folder is no longer displaying anything?? It used to.
1. Can I get rid of the 43g of content on my HD?
2. Why is no media location displaying in iTunes?
3. How else can I see what is using 120g on my HD?

I have 100% of my songs for iTunes stored on a USB Hard Drive.
I dont let iTunes organise my library, nor copy to iTunes library when adding
The default iTunes Media Folder is located on this drive where about 70% of the songs are (songs that have been ripped from CD or downloaded.
My USB HD was plugged in correctly, but a song couldnt be found...so I tried another and it found it straight away...odd
I then hit 'Get Info' on the bad songs, and the location that Itunes was looking in, was changed to a new Default iTunes Music Folder on my Macs drive
Very strange as I have never known iTunes to change the location of a file before within the library?
Ive come to the conclusion that it was only the files that were stored in the Default iTunes Media Folder that coudnt be found.
So I then checked in preferences, to see where the Default iTunes Music Folder was, and it was on my Macs Drive, instead of the USB drive (possibly due to starting iTunes up, without my HD plugged in)
Changed this back to location on my USB Hard Drive, and all of a sudden iTunes re-writes my library to show all the files in the correct position again! Ive never known it do this before on my PC, is it a new feature?

I just noticed that instead of the normal iTunes folder structure in my home dir of Music/iTunes/iTunes Music now the iTunes Music folder as well as the Mobile Applications folder have been copied into a new folder called iTunes Media. Is this something to do with iTunes 9 or Snow Leopard. Also what folders are safe for me to delete? Because everything has been duplicated I am wasting about 30gb of my hard drive and I'd like the space back.
