MacBook Pro :: Stuck In Sleep Mode - Can't Restart Or Shut Down

I'm running the latest version of Snow Leopard on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro Unibody. After installing the latest Software Update, including a Firmware update for my SuperDrive, the following problem has occurred, for the very first time: I closed the lid of my laptop for the night, as I do routinely every night, thus putting my MBP to sleep. I leave the various apps open, usually Firefox, iTunes and Entourage. The next morning my MBP felt hot and the screen remained black... it would not change. After repeatedly trying and failing to clear the black screen and bring my apps up, I held the power button down to do a complete Shut Down. My system turned off, but did not do an actual Shut Down. When I press the power button to turn it on, it comes right back into sleep mode with the screen remaining black. I cannot seem to force either a Shut Down or a Restart. I unplugged all peripherals and the power cord, let my MBP cool down completely--for a couple of hours-- and tried everything again. Still no change: I'm stuck in sleep mode with a black screen. I've also tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC, but neither works, probably because I'm not coming from a Shut Down. Is anybody else having this problem?

MacBook Pro :: Double Tap Restarting After Sleep Mode / Restart / Shut Down
so i've been having an issue with the double tap to hi-light any text i wish to copy. Such things as double tapping the URL bar to hi-light the whole url so i can just retype w/e site i want to go to. Every time i restart or turn off or my mbp goes to sleep and i reopen it, the double tap function resets. So i'm forced to go to the system preferences > trackpad> "double-click speed" to slowest in order to get my double tap to hi-light anything again. Is there something wrong with my mbp? Or is there a way i can save the settings when i put the double-click speed to slow so that it wont reset every time my mbp needs to be woken up or restarted?

MacBook Pro :: Cannot Restart After Sleep Mode
I was using my Macbook Pro, finished, put it to sleep and left for a few hours. When I came back it was off. I try to turn it on and the power light comes on and I can hear the disk for about 3 second and then it just shuts off again. I searched the apple support site for this problem and I've done these things. [URL]. I play computer games on it and often the battery would drain. I would plug it in when the 10 minute warning came up, and the little light on the MagSafe plug would turn from green to amber. Lately it had been turning back to green even though the battery icon on the screen said the battery wasn't charged, sometimes the computer would even shut down even though it was plugged in (again, it was plugged in and the light was green, even though the battery icon said it wasn't charged). Maybe it's related to my computer not turning on?

MacBook Pro :: Get Files Off Of A Stuck In Sleep Mode?
A bit of a backstory: Recently my mid-2008 MacBook Pro stopped working. When I try to boot it up, the screen just stays black and the idle light flashes perpetually. I've reset the NVRAM and SMC, even attached it to an external monitor, but nothing works. After a lot of research, I'm pretty sure it's a problem with the hall effect switch. But I digress; I don't actually need this computer repaired, as I have a second (newer) MacBook Pro I can use. However, there are some files on the old one that I'd like to retrieve. And yes, I've tried booting into target disk mode, which unfortunately doesn't work for reasons listed above.Essentially what I'm asking is, is there a way I could transfer the files off the old computer to the new one? I know, I should take it to the Apple store, but that's not really an option right now due to personal reasons.

MacBook Pro :: Stuck In Sleep Mode After Update Now Not Booting
I have an older but babied 2008ish Macbook Pro. Today upgraded my 3GS to os 4 with no problem. I downloaded a couple things but didn't go crazy today. I left work and shut lid. When I got home it was stuck on the screen saver password for a long time. I turned off the unit and now it just boots to a white screen. I can boot via OSX disc but it also doesn't see HD. This is a 500gb Seagate drive and I'm screwed if it's dead. Any suggestions to at least get to my bootcamp partition?

MacBook :: Laptop Holds Charge Only In Sleep Mode / Shut Down
I tried SMC resets and everything. The Macbook takes a charge and charges normally when it is asleep, or off. It will charge to the max (96%). Battery has 349h load cycles. Charges when asleep or off. As soon as I power on the laptop or wake it up, it will stop charging. Battery holds the normal charge I usually get (3ish hours). Tried a few pram and smc zaps. Battery charger is a Hong Kong knockoff. Battery inside is genuine. 2008 Aluminum Macbook. Cleaned magsafe and port with q-tip and still to no avail.

When plugged in, it will run *off the battery* and the charger will show a green light and not trickle charge the battery. It will drain the battery, and then when it is drained it will run off the power. Check the screen shot. I am thinking that the charger is the culprit. Because it holds a charge when I let it charge while it is off. It will charge up just fine, in the two hours or whatever it takes to charge itself up. Battery usage is normal when it is running off the battery.

MacBook Pro :: Can't Shut Down Or Restart
I have recently attempted to shut down and restart my Unibody 15" Macbook Pro. However, upon attempting this, I receive this message:

"The application iTunes cancelled restart. To try again, quit iTunes and choose restart from the Apple menu."

Now iTunes wasn't open in the first place, but I open it anyway and quit it. I try again. Same message.

I am really becoming frustrated. What should I do? Let it run out of battery? And why am I receiving this message?

MacBook Aluminum :: Cannot Wake Up After Sleep Mode - Need To Restart
I have a friend he got a problem at waking up his macbook. It is a macbook unibody late 2008. Everything is ok, but once we close the cap make it sleep and then open it, it cannot wake up itself. We have to power it down and power on, but when it turn on, there is a loading bar. We haven't see that before. We have reinstalled the system both with 10.5 and 10.6, but it still there. here is the video of the wake up process.

MacBook Pro :: Can't Logout , Restart Or Shut Down
SOME ago, I came across a strange problem on my macbook pro: I wast able to log out, restart or shut down using the apple menu, nor using the power button, which just won't respond. When I try to restart, nothing just happens. No spinning wheel, nothing. The only way to restart is to use sudo reboot in the Terminal. This problem started short after I installed a program called FontForge, but uninstalling it didnt help, nor did recovering the system from an older Time Machine backup (from the time before I installed the FontForge).Finaly I thought it could be something about the SMC and I reseted both it and the PRAM, but without any success. Then I did a re-installation of Mac OS X Lion using Lion recovery, but still no difference and now Im beginning to feel quite clueless.

When I try to restart, my computer makes a click sound (once).I have tried pressing the power button and immediately holding down the Command, Option, P and R keys simultaneously until you hear the startup sound a second time - I still only hear the click once. OS X Leopard :: Can't Shut Down - Restart Macbook Pro / Resolve This?
If I choose restart or shut down from the apple menu the icon for my hard drive disappears and it looks like the finder has quit, but nothing more happens. I can bring everything back by simply choosing the finder in the dock.

It got to this state after I connected a nook ereader via usb. I found that I could not eject the nook. After spending nearly an hour on hold with B&N customer "service" I decided just to unplug the thing. Of course I got the message warning of possible serious harm, but the nook seems to be ok. At first there seemed to be sort of a phantom nook still connected. I got the message that the nook could not be ejected because it was in use, but by a series of steps that I probably can't reproduce, I got rid of that message. The MacBook seems to work fine except for this little problem of not being able to restart or shut it down. Eventually I'm going to need to do one of those things to, e.g., install new software. So I would like to resolve this problem.

Snow Leopard :: Macbook Stuck In Sleep Mode / Make It Normal?
I let my computer on over night, and when I came back to it this morning it was in sleep mode. I know this because the light on the front right on the laptop was fading in and out. I tried to move the mouse, and nothing. Pressed the power button ... no change. I ended up just holding down the power button to get the computer to turn off, and then started it back up again. I have a 13 inch Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard (10.6.4). I never set my computer to go into sleep mode. I normally leave it plugged in all the time.

I opened up the sys log file (in /var/log/system.log) and it looks like Chrome did something funny.code...

OS X Tiger :: Unable To Login From Sleep / Restart Or Shutdown Mode
I am unable to log in to my computer from sleep, restart or shutdown mode, sure the password window appears and I type in my password.. there is a 2 second pause and then a window appears which has an "A" application logo and it says that I cannot access the users account at this time, the message disappears and then the password window shudders like cyber jello, i kid you not! No matter what I try the result is the same, I was given password hint, I was asked for master password, I tried it all and the same "no access at this time notice.

So what did I do prior to the block? Well this morning I went and shot some video as you do when down by the seaside, I came home and connected to IMovie 08 and imported the clips, I noticed how the video stuttered and jumped in places and so I decided to take advice and turn off filevault so as to edit the clips and place in a separate folder & not my home folder, seemed like a reasonable idea. To initiate turning off FileVault I was first asked for my account password, then I was asked for a password again i assumed it was the master password this time (I seem to remember that only the master password opens the FileVault ?) However the master password was never accepted, after several attempts I decided to enter my account password and this action opened the FileVault.

Now at this point I say how strange to be asked twice by to separate windows for my account password only? However it did the trick and FileVault said it was decrypting the home folder, 17 minutes pass by and then its done, the computer restarted asked me for my password and flaming jello windows here I am hello I feel rightly focked now, Finally I tried installing OSX startup 1. but of course it just spins and spins a little more and then i eject it get outta my seat quick and strive for fresh air. I am locked out, please tell me what can I do now?

IMac Intel :: System Not Wake Up After Sleep Mode - Need To Restart
Well, my brand new (just out of the box) 27" i7 iMac doesn't want to sleep: it shuts down immediately instead. Not a normal shut down, but it looks like it's going to sleep, but it won't wake. It's not simply that the screen remains black, but it's shut down: one quick press of the power button and it restarts (no forced-shutdown needed). All applicable updates are installed. Did some trouble shooting with AppleCare, and the following didn't work: Reset the PRAM, SMC (more on that later), set up a test account, reinstalled the OS.

On the SMC: The rep insisted that doing so involved just unplugging everything for 15 seconds. I've read things that say you need to press the power button (when all is unplugged) for 5 seconds; he said that's not for this machine. Haven't done it the other way yet: was he right? Also, he wanted me to do an archive and install of the OS, followed by (if needed) an erase and install. I saw no such options in the Snow Leopard software disk--the installed just ran, no options to do either (nor shown in options/customization buttons). After reinstall, my system looks exactly the same as before.

OS X Tiger :: Macbook Won't Restart Or Shut Down?
My Macbook warned me that the Startup Disk was Almost Full. I moved a lot of stuff to the trash can, emptied the trash can, and I told it to restart. By then it had "zero kb left". I have file vault on. It has been several hours since I told it to restart and the file vault screen still hasn't popped up yet (the one where it tells you file vault would like to reclaim space and asks if you want to skip or continue).

Should I be patient and wait until the file vault screen pops up eventually, or should I hold the power button until it shuts down? Or do I have any other options?
