I'm getting a new 13" MBA, upgrading from a 2006 macbook. I have it all backed up to time capsule. Can I just connect the MBA to my time capsule and restore the macbook image?
View 6 Replies View RelatedSo I'm planning on getting a new MacBook here shortly and was wondering how the Time Machine transfer works. A few questions:
1. Can I select which Data I upload to the new computer?
2. Is data from Address Book saved?
3. When I want to backup my new computer, can I keep the prior back up from my old computer and have a separate one for the new computer?
I have a mac book pro 13 inch with 300 or so gig of disk space. I would like to upgrade this to 1 tb. Can you use time machine to restore all your photos, videos, music and files to the new hdd after the os is installed on the new hdd?

I just purchased a new Macbook Pro to replace my iMAC. The iMAC backs up to Time Machine. Is using the Time Machine backup easy to setup the new Macbook?? The thought of having to install all my apps and migrate all my data sounds overwhelming and I'm hoping Time Machine makes this painless?

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
Ever since I updated to 10.6.1 I've had the following problems:
- Time Machine does not work at all with my Time Capsule. When it attempts to back up my data, Time Machine gets hung up with a status of "Making backup disk available..." and the icon in the menu bar just spins forever (the status appears in the menu bar icon's menu). I also cannot enter Time Machine; it gets hung trying to connect to the Time Capsule and I have to cancel it. Finder then takes up 100% CPU and I have to power down by holding in the power button (shutting down from the Apple menu doesn't work).
- I store my iTunes library in a folder called Music under the Data folder on the Time Capsule. When I open iTunes, it prompts me to choose my iTunes library. When I do, it starts to load the list of albums, then iTunes locks up and I must force quit it. This also causes my machine to not be able to shut down or restart from the Apple menu.
Oddly enough I can still access the Data folder from Finder with no issues. I just wanted to put this out there in case other people are having similar problems. It's pretty frustrating as all this worked fine before the 10.6.1 update.
So I've ordered my new 13" Macbook Air (2.13 GHz, 4GB RAM, 256GB Flash) and I'm wondering the best way to transfer data from my 13" MBP? Which would be the best : Mac-To-Mac migration (via ethernet with the attached adapter) or Restore from Time Machine? I'm worried about compatibility issues with restoring from time machine, or migration all together, and was contemplating setting it up as a brand new machine, but that would be extremely time consuming. Also because I have iLife '09 on my MBP will that replace iLife '11 on my MBA?
View 20 Replies View RelatedI have an external USB drive containing my TM backups. I'd like to take the HD out of the enclosure and install it internally in my MacPro. Will TM just detect that the drive is now internal/SATA and continue to work, or will I need to clean it and start backing up from scratch?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently bought a new iMac and would like to migrate my stuff from my early 2006 iMac (first intel mac, 32 bit). There are several ways of doing this, but I'd like to achieve:
1) Identical copy
2) Defragmented drive (previously it was getting very slow)
As I know from using Windows, you cannot simply create an image from one PC and move to another, because of differences in the kernel. The new PC may never boot. I am moving from 32bit to 64bit, so that would be quite a change. Also, should I use the migration assistant, or boot from recovery disc and recover from my time machine backup? Will the latter not result in a more identical system? And, is that desirable? My old iMac has all updates installed, so it should be the same as the new system.
My existing Time Machine drive was running out of space so I decided to get a much (much) larger drive and move everything over from the one to the other. In doing so, I followed the directions on this page
Time Machine: How to transfer backups from the current backup drive to a new backup drive up to around step 9. That's where I deviated a bit. Initially, I did just drag the folder "Backups.backupdb" from one to the other but after 5 hours of spinning it's wheels, it informed me that it had about a day to copy all the data from the old drive to the new. I didn't have a day (again, stay with me). So instead of copying, I figured I'd just start moving all the files. That way, even if I had to shut down my laptop (which I did, to come in to work), I could just stop the process and pick up where I left off -- the system wouldn't have to re-look at files that it had already processed. So I just opened terminal and ran
cd /Volumes
sudo mv -fv <OLD DRIVE> <NEW DRIVE>
and everything seemed to be chugging along just fine. I let this process continue running over night and this morning, it was still working on the very first (ie oldest) backup directory. I aborted the process (^C), ejected the drives (and they ejected just fine -- no errors, no warnings), shut everything down and came in to work. Got in to work, plugged both drives back in (again, everything is fine) but when I went to kick the process this time (same commands as above), I keep getting the message "Operation not permitted" for every file and folder. Huh? It was fine with this last night.
So then I open up a couple of finder windows (one for each drive) and this time, I drag over just one folder from
<OLD DRIVE>/Backups.backupdb/MACHINE_NAME/
to
<NEW DRIVE>/Backups.backupdb/MACHINE_NAME/
and, after I authenticate, I'm given the error : "The operation can't be completed because backup items can't be modified" ...
In finder, when you start a copy process, OS X creates kind of a "ghost" folder/file in the new location and in finder, it appears to be kind of greyed out. When I started the copy process (before it told me it was going to take about a day), it created the ghost "Backups.backupdb" folder as usual. But after it told me that it was going to take a day and I cancelled the process, the ghost folder remained and still appeared greyed out in Finder. In terminal, I was able to change to that directory as normal so I didn't think anything of it -- the directory just existed. I cd'd, moved files and all was good, as I said above.
After I ejected the drive, I expected that when I mounted the drive again, the folder would appear as normal in Finder. But it's still showing greyed out. And I can't double click on it to open it as I can the same folder on my <OLD DRIVE> time machine. I have to right click and select "Open in new tab", which it will. When I do, though, the directory appears empty despite the fact that if I change to that directory in terminal, it's populated with files and folders that were moved last night.
I'm trying to backup my computer using flock but its moving very slow. I want to reformat my external before I start backing up again also. Can someone let me know what would be the proper way to format my drive and how to fix the slowness problem?

I have an iTunes library of approx. 60GB that is currently stored on an external hd connected via USB to a mac mini. I access this music library via other devices such as ipad, iphone bose soundtouch. Currently the iTunes library is only accessible from the other devices if the mac mini is awake and functioning.
I am therefore considering moving the external hd USB connection from the mac mini to my time capsule which provides the network in my home. I assume that this will provide me with an always on music library rather than one which is dependent on the mac mini. Firstly is this assumption correct or will I still need to have the mac mini awake and iTunes open on it in order to access the iTunes library from an iphone for example?
If my assumption is correct, what steps do I need to go through to relocate the hd from the mac mini to the time capsule and still be able to play music?
I've just got my iMac so for me it was important to get TM up and running before I start doing some real work (and hard play!).
I want to share the lessons learned from my experience and from others in this forum in the hope that it will help others.
I am using a NS4300N NAS from Promise on a LAN with an iMac running Leopard 10.5.2. I connect to it using SMB. It should work with any NAS since the instructions here are not NAS specific. I haven't tried with AFP.
I have regularly been using TM with my Leopard. I just wiped my MBP clean and installed Snow Leopard. I have done a manual restore of all the files I need. My question is, can I use the old TM hard drive as the new TM backup drive, without losing the old backups? In other words, if I plug in the old TM drive and designate it as a backup disk, would my old backups be removed?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just set up the Mail app but dislike that even after I quit the app if I click it again to reopen it it doesn't require me to re-enter my password. This means even if I close/quit it and walk away from my laptop anyone who uses it can just click Mail and they have complete access to my Gmail account.
I went into preferences but could not find where or how to require it to ask for my password after it's been closed. If there isn't an option then I will go back to copying an address when on a website then opening gmail and pasting it and emailing. Obviously using the Mail app would be more convenient for those types of emails but if it means my account is always open and available for anyone to read then I will go back to the longer method.
I have two questions. Firstly, I am considering buying a western digital MyBook Studio Edition II [URL]. If I use time machine with this drive, will I be able to remove one of the drives and keep it off-site for safekeeping and have time machine continue to backup on the remaining one as usual? Secondly, if I remove drive #2 and keep it off site, would dropping it back into the raid setup update drive #2 with drive #1's current time machine backup? I'm new to raid, and I am basically trying to have a time machine backup, and a off site backup.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo if my current setup on my Mac Pro is (2) 1 TB drives.

Can I connect a 1 TB Time Capsule to essentially "back up my Time Machine back up"?
So I want to have (3) 1 TB HDD's, (2) in the Mac Pro, and (1) in the Time Capsule, all with the same information. I basically need to know if the software is set up for a 1X's backup only, or can it copy the same information again as a redundant backup?
I just installed a new HD in my mac pro to replace my dying HD and i transferred all the data over using disk utility, but when I go to set up my time capsule my new HD does not appear in the list? what gives?

I have a 2009 imac with snow leopard. I want to set up my time machine with an external USB or Firewire hard drive, but I'm not sure which would be better or less costly. Need some advice on which brands would be best. I have a My Book on USB right now, but as it's configured for both Mac and Windows files (I use Parallels) I cannot use it for Time Machine. Also, I've been reading that rebooting through Time Machine could take a long time, but if i could partition the new drive and make some of it a reboot disk alone, that would be faster. I don't know how to do that, or which external drive to get that would work best for that arrangement.

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

I am trying to setup a firefighter's apple laptop into our linksys net at firestation. She got access fine when we did not have it secured but now we setup a wep key. All other members can get in by entering wep key when they choose the wireless router but when we input the wep key to apple laptop airport I think we get connection error. Key is definitely right. What changed in the apple setup other than the wep key, again when signal was unsecure laptop safari worked fine. The linksys is a B about 3 years old.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to do a favour for a friend. She has a 320Gb external WD hard drive which she used on her Macbook to backup with Time Machine. It is not partitioned and she keeps the "Backups.backupdb" folder with other personal folders she throws in there. Recently she sold her Macbook and all that was left was this hd. She now only has access to her work pc but it won't recognize her hd as she's apparently formatted it with option "Mac OSX Journaled". So she gave me her hd to backup and then format to FAT32.
I've been a Mac for a long time but have never used Time Machine, I simply copy my important files into an external hd as I feel it's cleaner and I've never really had HD problems with any Macs I owned. So basically I have no idea how this works. I managed to copy all of her personal folders into my hd as well as the one labeled "Latest" on the Backups.backupdb folder ("Latest" is actually an alias). But I can't seem to be able to copy the rest of the backup folders. I can copy them into my computer hard drive, but each folder (I'm talking about the ones labeled with dates, there are 35 of them) is around 70Gb. Now, of course that doesn't make any sense, as it would be impossible to have 35 folders of 70Gb each in a 320Gb hd. I can only assume they use aliases as well, but when I try to copy them individually or as a whole (enclosing folder) Finder says I have no space available for that (even though I have more than 320Gb available).
Now, in my mind it's completely idiotic to keep any folders other than the Latest one. She doesn't even own a Mac anymore. But she's freaking out that I'm going to lose her entire life (she's that kind of person). I don't want to open the Time Machine app because like I said I don't use it on my computer and these are not my files, so I do not in any way want to sync with this hard drive or backup to it. I'm on a 21" 500Gb iMac running 10.7.3.
I've got a Time Capsule attached to an Ethernet network, which gets it's internet access from DSL. I can't seem to get the configuration I want. I'd like it to be part of the ethernet network, available to Macs on the network and I'd like it to act as a wireless access point for Macbooks and Macbook Pros. But when I go through the Airport Utility install, once I tell it it is to connect to the network, which already has internet set up through DSL, then it won't allow me to set up wireless. It's as if it wants to work one way or the other. And the instructions are confusing about which port in the back of the unit to insert the network cable. I did manage to get it set up and connected to the network, and to deliver wireless, but I ended up creating a "bridge" and doing things I did not quite understand.
I ended up creating a wireless network and I guess "bridging" that network with the ethernet. Maybe that's the right thing to do, I don't know. Maybe I'm just not understanding the terminology right. is "creating a wireless network" the same thing as merely creating a wireless access point for a wireless device to connect too? I guess I was thinking that they were two different things, maybe not. So, it's probably a simple thing, and I hope someone can just tell me in what way I am supposed to set up the Time Capsule. I know I got it working, but I can't even remember how after a zillion tries I even got it working right.
I got the iMac Wednesday and have been setting it up all week/weekend. I finally down to the end of getting time capsule setup. Here's what I'd like to have:
Internal iMac HD: 500gb
time capsule HD: 1tb (750gb backup, 250gb usable space)
Right now I've got it set up and I'm about to pick the drive in time machine, but it looks like as soon as I do that it's going to just start backing up my internal HD to the time capsule's HD? Will I later be able to set aside 250gb of time capsule space to use as storage? Do I need to set up something before I backup to it? Is this even possible, or is this what everyone is talking about when they say time capsule can't be used as a NAS?
I currently have a Netgear DG834G Wireless ADSL Router. I would like to purchase a Time Capsule and set it up as a wireless bridge. The Netgear is downstairs in the living room and has my Xbox, Xbox 360 and HD DVD player plugged into the Ethernet ports. My iMac and girlfriends MacBook connect wirelessly. My question is can I use the Time Capsule in Bridge mode and utilize the Ethernet connections for my iMac? This way backups will be much quicker to the Time Capsule. If anyone sees any areas in my setup that could be improved please let me know.
