MacBook Pro :: Valid DVD Not Found - Initialization Error

I had a disc in my computer and then I started having trouble with some of my applications, so I restarted. Now the disc doesn't show up, and starting DVD Player gives me: "There was an initialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found. -70012". I can't eject the disc (I suppose because the computer doesn't realize it's there). I tried logging out, no luck. It's a friend's DVD.

Software :: Initialization Error - A Valid DVD Drive Could Not Be Found -70012
I am very upset and am ready to buy a different computer for my personal use than my iMac 20". I am running OS X 10.5.6 and it's a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM and the 320 GB HD. My DVD/CD won't accept/load the CD/DVD at all and the real kicker of it is is that the machine JUST went off warranty. I think the CD/DVD is the Mitsubishi one. Any help would be GREAT.

I have been getting the error message:

There was an initialization error.
A valid DVD drive could not be found [-70012].

I have tried to reset the parameters.
I have tried to restart the computer and then wait for a few moments.
I have tried to use the hold the mouse down and restart.
I downloaded the Tray Eject applescript and don't know how to run that.
I have NOT tried the shut off and unplug everything but will and see if that works.

MacBook Aluminum :: Unable To Play Or Eject Dvd / A Valid DVD Drive Could Not Be Found
My MacBook was working OK until I was asked to update the Superdrive Firmware Update 3.0 which I did. But after that the drive does not work - cannot play DVD and cannot eject. When I go into Applications and chose DVD Player, I got this error message "There was an intialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found. -70012" What does this mean?

I tried these:

(1) Press the eject button (at top right hand corner of keyboard)
(2) Rebooted and pressed eject button
(3) Rebooted and pressed TrackPad
(4) Connect a mouse and rebooted and pressed the left mouse key.

Mac Mini :: DVD Player Initialization Error 70017
Mac Mini early 2009 - 2.0ghz, 3gb ram, 10.6.2. I am having a regular problem with the dvd player; I usually get the message "There was an initialization error. A valid video device could not be found for playback. Error 70017" when I start the program. The DVD drive works wonderfully for reading, burning, etc. If I restart the computer the dvd player usually works for watching movies. If I use Toast, disk utility, or any other dvd related program, the player will now work again.

I have tried the pacifist method to reinstall and have deleted every dvd player file I can find. The same happens when I reset pram. Repairing the drive/repairing permissions is not effective either - sometimes it works for a little while, but the issue always returns. I can use any number of other programs to watch movies, but it sure is nice to be able to use dvd player to see which title is playing, etc...plus I just want it to work - after all, isn't that the hook?

OS X Leopard :: DVD Player - "There Was An Initialization Error 108"
Starting about a week ago, whenever DVD Player is launched it reports the following:

There was an initialization error.. Error: -108

The dialog only has an OK button, which immediately quits.

I've tried removing the preferences, rebooting, and even repairing permissions; nothing has worked. This only happens in my account; other accounts on the machine are not affected.

DVDs themselves seem to mount just fine (I can see data DVDs in the Finder; movie DVDs play fine with VLC). It seems that the problem is with the DVD Player application itself (I can't even launch it without a DVD in the drive).

MacBook Pro :: Folder With Question Mark - Error No Valid Packages
My macbook greeted me with the gray screen and folder with question mark this morning - I've tried everything listed on the Apple website for this issue, I've tried running the Disk Utility (although I'm getting an "error no valid packages" message) and I've tried running DiskWarrior. Disk Utility sees the harddrive - DiskWarrior does not.

The hard drive only "clicks" 3 times at bootup, but it stops immediately after. Can I conclude that the hard drive is not entirely defective that it's just a bad header, or boot sequence or whatever "fixable, I won't lose all my data" error? My other question is that if I can see the hard drive in Disk Utility, is it possible to create an image of it that I could say extract the data from on another Mac?

OS X :: Handbrake Conversion - No Valid Source Found
Basically I am trying to convert a 2.2 GB .mov file that I shot and edited using Final Cut Prom to an MP-4 file using Handbrake. When I try to convert the file I get a message that reads. "No Valid Source Found". Why is this? I realize I can export as an MP-4 right out of Final Cut but the codecs in Final Cut aren't optimal enough to produce as high a quality video as it would be if I did a conversion using Handbrake.

ITunes Mac :: Error On MacBook Pro - Requested Resource Not Found
I just purchased a new macbook pro yesterday. I am trying to download movies for a flight, but I can't even sign in (or authorize) my new comp with the apple store. When I try to do either I get an error message, "we could not complete your request the request resource was not found". The weird thing is my itunes works fine on my imac. I was able to buy a TV episode earlier today no problem. both itunes versions (on both comps) is up to date. I've read old threads where some suggested that itunes was down and/or to exit itunes and log back in. I don't think ITunes is down b/c it works fine on my imac (just tried a few minutes ago). I tried exiting IRTunes on both comps and still no luck.

OS X Leopard :: FireWire Error - No Valid Self IDs After Bus Reset
We are having an issue with firewire on two different macs. One is Mac Pro running 10.5.5 and the other g5 running 10.4.11 (I am not on my home machine). We were shooting tethered to a hasselblad h3d via firewire 800 this morning when we first encountered the problem, although subsequently all firewire devices (externals, various manufacturers Lacie, iomega) drives were affected. The camera, and the the hard drives were not recognized. We have followed all steps appart from step 9 in this document [URL].

We have also ran permissions repairs and subsequently applejack [URL]. Resetting the PRAM resulted in successfull remounting of the external hard drives but when we started the camera it was not recognized. I subsequently noted the external hard drives that had remounted after the pram reset were no longer mounted although I am not sure when this happened. This message shows up repeatedly in the system events log, even when no firewire devices are physically connected.:

Jan 19 15:55:02 Mac-Pro kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) TI ID 823f built-in: no valid selfIDs for more than 3 minutes after bus reset.
A similar message repeatedly shows up in 10.4.11. I would have said that the fact it was not working on two different machines would isolate it to the camera (changed firewire cables too) but these messages on both systems is just weird.

OS X Tiger :: Error - No Valid Packages - Boot Emac In Safe Mode
I booted my eMac in Safe Mode and tried to verify and repair my disk permissions. When I did, I got the following: "Error: No valid Packages." That doesn't sound good. I restarted in normal mode, and although all programs I've tried start up fine, here I am, feeling like a complete dummy. Why, you ask? Because I deleted all those pesky packages in Utilities this morning. They just looked like old Install thingies. Why do I need install packages for software updates I did in 2006? And then I emptied the trash. Like the boneheaded dummy I am. So, the long and the short of it is this: What does this failure to verify or repair disk permissions due to a lack of packages mean? Is there a way to get new packages? Everything still works fine and fast. So how bad is it, doc?

In case you're dying to know how I went so far astray, here's the short version (the long one is on the Lame post): Despite being a light user I'd gotten to about 35GB of my 37.27GB hard drive. So, I ran cleanup programs (Xslimmer, AppCleaner, and Printer Setup Repair). Then I ran Disk Inventory X, which led me to delete duplicates of most songs in iTunes, and some big unused native or installed apps (Tony Hawk, movie-making stuff, etc), figuring that when I sell the old eMac I'll just reinstall the OS from the startup disks. That brought me to about 17GB or so. I ran Cocktail to make sure everything was still connected, including repairing disk permissions. Everything was ducky, ran pretty fast, I was happy. Weeks went by. Weeks went by. Then, while I was bored this morning, I decided to re-image the hard drive. The new picture of my reduced drive revealed that there were tons of these old installer packages in the utilities folder, dating back to 2006. But wait, you say, didn't you recoil from touching anything in the utilities folder? Nope. Didn't I already say I'm a dope?

Final Cut Pro :: Not Found Error Appearing On Timeline
I have a very strange error appearing in FCP on my latest edit. The footage I'm editing is XDCAM EX1080i50 captured using log and transfer. I have been working on the project for a number of weeks. The other day I was adding some sync sound for the cutaways. When I got about half way through the timeline I went to review what I had done and then suddenly an error came up at a certain point saying "!Not Found" and stopped playback. This happened at a particular point where there was a cutaway over an interview. I then removed the cutaway and the sync sound and played back the clip. The same error message appeared at the same point. I removed the interview so there was nothing at that point in the timeline, but the error still popped up.

I then checked to make sure that the clips in question were working and they appeared to be fine in the viewer. I then re-added them to the timeline but the same error appeared. I then copy and pasted all of the timeline to a new timeline but the same error appeared in exactly the same spot. I then re-captured the footage from "log and transfer" giving them a different name. Tried adding them, but had the same problem. As I had a tight deadline I managed to create a new time line added the two clips in question from the viewer and then copy and pasted the rest of the edit around them. This worked fine and I carried on adding my sound. Later on it happened again with two totally different clips.

Another thing to note is that from now on whenever I open this project in FCP it comes up with the "offline files" box. It indicates that 1 media file is offline. I click reconnect and under Files to connect it shows:
Offline Files:
'G-RAID3:
It shows nothing else, no media files, nothing. G-RAID3 is the name of the external hard drive where all of the footage is stored. This is clearly not missing because every file is showing up and can be accessed from finder.

Final Cut Pro :: Codec Not Found Error When Trying To Render/export Layered Sequence?
I have a sequence that I never had problems with in the past but as of yesterday when I open the project and try to render or export. I get the infamous dialogue box saying, "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card."

I've narrowed it down to only being a problem wherever I have two particular types of media clips layered one on top of the other. In this case it is occurring wherever I have an Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) clip layered with an Animation codec clip containing a graphical bug that was created in After Effects and exported as a Quicktime Movie with RGB+Alpha. Because of the Alpha channel in the bug clip, it is automatically given the Animation codec upon export from After Effects to retain and preserve the transparency needed. I've also narrowed it down to only occurring when all this is combined on a sequence with its compressor set to standard ProRes 422 or ProRes HQ. If I set it to any other codec, such as any DV/DVC Pro or MPEG IMX codec then I can render and export again.

And if anyone else reading this comes across this this same type of problem themselves, then I suggest what I just got to work: Duplicate your sequence, then delete the clips from the new sequence and nest the original sequence into it.
