MacBook Pro :: No Volume - Volume Icon Grayed Out. On Late 2008

I am having no volume; however, if I were to plug in my headphone jack sound would work. I read that theres a switch within headphone jack that makes the sound to optical out?..There is a red light within the headphone jack as well..I read that you can push the switch with a toothpick or something similar but didn't work..I don't got a close apple store nearby

MacBook :: Volume Icon Grayed Out On Lion?
I was listening to my itunes through headphones today, and right after I took the headphones out, my volume icon and slider are grayed out and unresponsive, and my volume buttons bring up the volume square-thing with a white "no" circle under the volume level. I've restarted my computer multiple times, blown out the headphone input with compressed air, verified my disk through disk utility and it said everything is fine, yet the problem persists.

MacBook Pro :: New Wireless Printer With Mbp - Volume Keys Don't Change Volume
I have a new Macbook Pro and just set up with the new bluetooth/wireless keyboard. When I hit the volume keys (mute, volume down, and volume up) which are also F10, F11, & F12 respectively it does not change the volume. For example if I hit the volume down/F11 key the open window minimizes. When hitting volume up/F12 it launches the "Dashboard" instead of increasing the volume.

I've tried holding down the Apple key while hitting the volume keys to see if that would work but it did not.

Can you tell me why the keys are not working as they are labeled (F1/F2 keys which are brightness controls also do not work as labled, etc)? And how can I resolve this so that they do work (I'm also curious why it didn't work when I set-up the keyboard and my Mac searched and found my keyboard).

is a way to increase the volume any further on my MacBook Pro? I am experiencing the same problem on my iPhone, as well. Yes, I'm a little hard of hearing, but I have my volume all the way up and can barely hear anything and my boyfriend had trouble hearing a movie this afternoon, too. This is quite frustrating.

Logic Studio / Pro :: Unable To Adjust Volume / Volume Is All Screwed Up
I've been having this weird problem for a while and I'm not sure how to get rid of it. Basically, I start a new project lay down some audio tracks as well as software tracks and everything works fine. Then randomly, when I open a new audio track the volume is all screwed up.

I'll explain, when I play into it normally it comes out at normal volume, however when I record it plays back at a volume so low it's barely audible. Other things I've noticed is that the volume on the mixing desk no longer has any affect on the volume of my sound on that track, also soloing the track makes it play at the volume that it comes out when recorded (i.e almost silent). -(this problem then occurs on every audio track I open afterwards)

1.I've also got a list of things I know it's not. I know it's not my sound card because I've used two different ones and the problem re occurs.

2.I know it's not my computer because it happens on both my lap top and my desk top.

3.I know it's nothing to do with the speakers, or FX pedals I'm using.

Theres no difference between the way I'm opening the new track and the way I have opened previous ones (that worked fine) in the project. Oh yeah, and the most weird thing is I after the problem occurs it happens on every new track I open.

So at the moment audio tracks 1, 2 and 3 all work fine. But I've tried opening more and more tracks and all of them have this problem.

IMac Intel :: Internal Speakers Volume Control Grayed Out
I have seen a few posts that say they have lost the internal speaker sound, but there does not seem to be any answer. The headset works fine, but when they are not plugged in the volume control is greyed out and there is no sound out. The mic works fine and as I said the headset gives great sound also the machine makes the usual start up sound. The machine is about 3 months old and everything was working fine until yesterday (27th Dec)afternoon 3pm ET.

Applications :: Control ITunes Volume (not System Volume) From Apple Aluminum Keyboard?
I have a Mac Pro and not too long ago I swapped from a fat, heavy and filthy white Apple Keyboard to a new skinny silver one. I like it, and also love that the F7-9 Skip Back-Pause/Play-Skip Forward keys work for iTunes, even when another app is active (what's the word I'm looking for - in focus or whatever). But I use Optical output, so the volume keys (F10-12) don't do anything. I know that, when iTunes is the active app, I can command-+/- to change the volume, but I'd love to be able to map the F10-12 keys to do that - without having to have iTunes active (playing, but not the active window).

OS X :: Volume Opens The Window For Expose And Does Not Control Volume Monitor Brightness?
Recently, my newer (last year) iMac probably running 10.5 started speaking and wont shut up... there is no obvious way to turn it off. I usually figure problems out myself but there are no system preferences that effect it. I even changed the voice in preferences as a test and it is still the same guy reading everything clicked in all applications except when I am in system preferences so far. Usually when I run into a dead end like this there is some mystery key command that works... anyone know?I also noticed that some of the top line (f) keys are not doing what they are supposed to any longer as well... volume up opens the window for expose & spaces it looks like and does not control the volume monitor brightness controls are not working either... I went to the key and mouse preferences and set the key strokes to default and still the same.

OS X Leopard :: Volume Bars Don't Change Volume - Using Firewire Audio Interface
I'm using a presonus firepod (FP10) and using the line-outs to get sound to my speakers.

i noticed that my system volume controls do not change the volume. The sound volume at 0% system volume is the same as the sound volume at 50% system volume, which is also the same as the sound volume at 100% system volume.

Sound IS coming out, and it works, just that volume controls don't affect the volume.

Of course, I have my sound input / output set to the firepod in my system preferences.

OS X :: New HD Not Showing Up In Disk Utility - This Volume Is The Startup Volume And Cannot Be Erased
I have my imac apart right now and replaced the internal HD as it was not working. I assume the problem is the new one is not formatted with OSX, so from the INSTALL CD I opened the disk utility and see only one drive called "MEDIA".? Or is that just part of the install dvd that looks like a HD? In the system it shows as not formatted, 0 bytes. When selected in Partition it says :

"This voume is the startup volume and cannot be erased. Size 7.1 GB The disk is not writable and cannot be partitioned"

So i guess thats not my new HD I am seeing? Other than that there is only the two OSX install CD icons.

OS X Tiger :: Audio Volume Automatically Goes To Full Volume?
my Imac is idle. I am using an audio interface made by Presonus ( firepod ) for recording and playback. When I set the volume on the Mac at, say to 1/2 and use the computer, all is fine. BUT>>>>> when it sits idle for a while, somehow the Mac volume auto resets itself to full volume, why, how does this happen? It has caused a pair of studio monitors to literally blow the speaker covers across the room as I sent a Mac email, the jet sound that accompanies the mail sending process was loud enough to fry the monitor speakers. How can I correct this other than keeping the output volume of the Presonus interface at a minimum, and constantly re adjusting it.

PowerPC :: The Volume Icon In The Menu Bar Has Disappeared?
I just started using Skype and use a Plantronics USB headset/microphone. It works pretty well calling a phone but has a really annoying side tone when calling another computer.

My problem, though, is that since I started using the headset, just a few days ago, my built in microphone and speaker and the ability to plug in just a headset and listen have vanished. Also, the volume icon in the menu bar has disappeared. If I go to System preferences, there is only plantronics in the menu. I've tried restarting with no change. It used to work just fine...where might it have gone?

[URL] Mode A1621, Boot Rom MB41.00C1.B03 I've read a number of postings which indicate 4GB is the official supported amount by Apple,  6Gb will work (unofficially) and this posting [URL] indicates some late 2008s can be upgraded to 8gb after a EFI update.. however mine comes up as a MacBook pro 4,1 not 5.1 (shame).

- Am I on the latest EFI/Boot Rom? Can I simply install the latest and it will

MacBook Pro :: Late 2008 Goes Black Randomly?
I purchased a macbook pro late 2008 model on December 30, 2008. Since recently, its screen goes black randomly when the built-in 9400m graphics chip is switched on. During the black screen process, the keyboard still keeps shining. I might wake it up by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Eject, but quite often I have to shut it down by holding the power button and restart. I have never encountered the problem when it is working with the 9600M chip, or when it is running window xp.

The screen can go black at any time, when it is booting (the gray screen with the Apple logo), or in the Apple hardware test. I have run Apple Hardware Test for several times, and no errors were found.

Desperately, I brought my laptop to the local apple store, and there I was unable to reproduce the black of death, and I left my computer there for check, after 3 days, they just called me, saying there was nothing wrong with it. But when I take it home, turn it on, only to find that the problem still remains the same.

Could it be the problem with a defected graphic chip? Or is it a problem with the firmware or the OS?

PS I tried to reset the SMC as it is instructed in Apple Support, but I did not see the led blinking at all, so I did not know whether it worked or not.

So is there anyway of itunes getting its volume level from the system level rather than being independent.

I know the software call AirFoil can do it but i do not want the other features of this program. The feature was called something like "Link iTunes volume to System".

Or would it be possible to write an applescript that intercepts the system volume up or down command then repeat the up or down to itunes' volume level?
