MacBook Pro :: Consolidating Copy Of ITunes Folder On External Drive Via Terminal

Jun 28, 2012

I've recently got a new MacBook Pro, and for at least 6 years or more, I've been using Windows to handle my iTunes library. At one point, when trying to transfer my library, somehow I lost ALL my music. As a result, I learned to back it all up...And I learned to be patient when doing so.Any way, I want to make sure that when I transfer my files THIS time, I do it right. I just need to consolidate my iTunes library that I have backed up to an external hard drive to another folder on the same drive.

Then when I move it to iTunes on my Mac, I only have to put the files into the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder. That said, I'm fairly decent with using the terminal; I've used Ubuntu for a while, and right now I'm using Fedora. I would use the terminal on my Mac, but I really don't want to use it there; I'll stay safe and let my Fedora computer do the work. That said, I know that both Mac and Fedora have "rsync" and "find" as part of the UNIX kernel both are built off of. With all that out of the way.

My question is simply which commands I ought to use to manually consolidate the files in the iTunes folder to a separate folder on the same external hard drive. I also happen to have a number of duplicate files, for some reason, except the duplicates are sometimes .mp3 files, while others are .m4a files. While the majority of my music has been restored because of "Purchased" section of the iTunes Store, I'm unsure of which files I'm looking to preserve; Do I just copy the mp3 files, or both? I hate doing music database repair.

Applications :: ITunes Make 2 Copies Of Each Song When Consolidating...

Dec 26, 2010

I consolidated my iTunes library because some files were on an external and the rest on the computer and when I did this it made copys of most of the songs in my music folder. Also it didn't consolidate the whole library it still shows many songs on the external.

The actual iTunes library is right, just not all songs point to the computer hard drive.

I have about 100 gigs worth of duplicates that I have no idea how to delete besides doing them one by one.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

This is how my iTunes folder looks for most albums.

OS X :: Consolidating ITunes Library - Manage Multiple Drives?

Dec 30, 2008

First one was a portable 500gb freeagent, and also I put it in a folder in my 1.5tb time machine drive. Tonight I am updating the second, and I think I'm noticing a problem, but not sure. First of all, when I move my library locatation in preferences to the ext. drive in preferences, and do consolidate library the "info" on a few of the songs still shows a filepath leading to the built in hard drive on my mac (the original library). Also, when I perform the Library>consolidate library function it seems like it copies all of the files that are already on the drive, too. So they only appear in itunes once but they appear in the actual folder more than once, in appended form. Anyone else think this is unnormal. How do you manage a library on mulitple drives? The original reason I did this was to clear some space on my macbook's hard drive, but I'm always too scared to delete the files on it.

ITunes :: Media Folder Relocation And Consolidating Files To External HDD?

Jul 4, 2012

My internal hard drive is FULL so I am planning to relocate the entire iTunes media folder of music and movies to an external hard drive. I found this article which describes the exact process:

[URL]

But here is my problem... Step 11 starts me down the path of organizing the library and consolidating the library. Keep in mind, I have long used the option to keep my media organized by Apple's naming convention and suggested location. But when it comes to consolidating, I am very hesitant. The reason being, I have media files, which I do not want to incorporate into iTunes. Like stuff relating to old jobs, my own crappy mp3 files, home movies of the kids, etc. I fear that consolidation will seek out every possible media file which iTunes is capable of reading and suck it inside. I do not want that. All my media files for iTunes are already inside the iTunes Media folder. I just want to move that external.

Another important goal for me is to maintain my precious playlists and the "date added" of all existing media files in the iTunes library... I love sorting music by date of purchase (or date encoded) and would be VERY upset to lose my long history.

Final Cut Pro X :: Consolidating Used Portions Only In Project In 10.1.2

Jun 29, 2014

I have some video clips that are very large.  I have projects that use only a very small portion of these clips.  Id like to consolidate a project with only the used portions (maybe a handle on each side for future edits).  Is this possible with 10.1.2 and the new media management options, or is this still unavailable?

Applications :: Consolidating Library - Don't Have Enough Drive Space

Dec 15, 2009

I am running the latest iTunes on my G5 and added a new internal hard drive - capacity 1.5TB. Now I want to consolidate my iTunes Library to the new drive. The 219GB of music is currently on my external 250GB drive. I first set my Music Folder file to the new drive, then perform the function: File>Library>Organize Library>Consolidate Files After it runs a 30 second "Preparing Copy" function, I get the incorrect error: There is not enough room on <MyNewHardriveName> to copy all of the requested files." Does anyone know the solution to this?

OS X :: Unable To Play Itunes / System Goes Into Sleep Mode While Playing Itunes

Sep 1, 2010

I recently upgraded my system HDD to an SSD with a new install of OSX 10.6.4 and mimicked the settings I had on my previous set up to replicate it. however, when for example I was using iTunes to play music the screen saver would come on and a short time later the system would pause iTunes and goes into Sleep mode.

my previous install never did that so I'm not sure if its because of the SSD and it not being mechanical it doesnt recognize it accessing or seeking 'per se' because regardless of unchecking "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" it still does it. here is an image of energy saver settings; btw I had the system plugged into and still went into sleep mode when iTunes was playing and even other media formats such as Video in iTunes or VLC.

OS X :: MacBook Pro And System Preferences - ITunes Album Artwork Screen Saver Not Working

Jun 30, 2009

My dad just bought the $1999 model of the new MacBook Pro a few days ago. Previously he had a MacBook Pro with a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo processor in it. We used target disk mode to transfer all of the data over and everything went fine. The only problem now is in System Preferences when using the screen savers his favorite iTunes album artwork screen saver is not working saying there is no album artwork in iTunes which isn't true (I checked ). When in that preference it causes System Preferences to slow down to the point where I need to force quit it and it causes the application to crash.

ITunes :: It Crashes System After Launch?

Feb 10, 2012

For the last several days my iMac will freeze a few minutes after launching, then proceed to freeze my entire iMac, forcing a hard reboot. I ran Activity Monitor when launching iTunes and noticed that before the trouble started simply mousing around or scrolling could take up 25% of my processor. Then it would jump up to 80-105% then it would fall to 0% and the system would freeze. If I then immediately used 'Force Quit Applications' I could force-quit iTunes... but only after the system itself had frozen for 10-30 seconds before finally giving me the pop-up asking to make sure I wanted to force-quit. (iTunes Helper never seemed to take any processor power.) iTunes 10 is definitely the culprit.

My setup: 2007 Core2Duo iMac 4Gb RAM, iTunes with 29,000 songs running 10.6.8 with latest updates. I have 185Gb left on my 750Gb drive. I've run Onyx to clear out all caches, and I've even trashed iTunes and downloaded a fresh copy from Apple and reinstalled.

ITunes For Mac :: System Extension Cannot Be Used After Installing 11.4

Installing latest version of iTunes (11.4) today led to the following error message: System extension cannot be usedThe system extension “//System/ Library/ Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.

I'm able to use my USB drive for Time Machine, and that appears to be functioning ok. And what does it mean for the continued safe operation of my MacBook?(Other than the distraction of getting a worrying error message that I take time out to report?)

MacBook Pro :: System Update And Lost System Time And Background

Once the reboot was complete I had lost my system time (which had been reset to December 31, 2000 and my background had been replaced with the original generic MAC background. I have been unable to find the source of this issue and I am unsure how to fix this. I was able to change my clock by adjusting the Date & Time Preferences and fix my background image as well, but I am concerned that this is a temporary fix. Has anyone else experienced this with a system update?

Software :: Tweaking ITunes - Increasing Performance Of System

Nov 4, 2009

I recently installed the new OS X on my MacBook 13" (the 2Ghz Dual Core white one) hoping it would increase the performance of the system, and specifically iTunes. [URL]. My iTunes library, like many out there, is large, but not overly large and definitely not to the point where it should be a problem. It's now at (I would guess) about 30 or so gigs, filled with mostly large MP3 files (70-200Mb).

- It's got to the point where I wait 3-4 seconds to go to the 'next' song when I press the 'right' arrow. This is (obviously) unacceptably slow. I thought about upgrading the RAM of the machine since it only has 1Gb I think. Now can anyone guarantee that doubling the RAM will properly increase performance again up to the point where I don't want to throw the machine out of the window? Yes, of course it will increase performance, that's obvious. But will it be enough, if not, I'll wait until it's completely unworkable and buy one of those new babyproof MacBooks (Edit: Or 4Gb?)

- The library is on an external 1Tb USB2 drive, but I could easily move it to the MacBook's HD but that's slower than the USB2 drive. Would this help any bit?

- Would removing all CD covers and images I have in there significantly increase performance?

Applications :: Deleted Entire ITunes Library - System Restore

Sep 23, 2007

I accidentally deleted my entire iTunes library. What happened was that I intended to delete all the songs from just one artist but for some reason, my iTunes deleted everything in my library which I have collected over the past 6 years. It gets worse because:

1 - I can't get my files back from my iPod because it died about a year ago
2 - I agreed to move all files to my recycle bin (at that point I had no idea I was deleting my entire library) and when I went to check the bin, none of the files were there
3 - I attempted a system restore but all it did was to return my folders with no files in them
4 - I tried to use a couple of undelete files software but none of them found the deleted files.

I'm really desperate to get my files back.

However, that was when I was a Windows user. Now, I'm using a Macbook Pro that I've had since December of 2006 and it's still running like a champ, but I would like to have all the latest features that come with Snow Leopard. My questions are as follows:Is there anything special I need to do prior to installing the new OS? Should I do a clean install? If so, are there any special files I should back up outside of my iTunes and iPhoto libraries, and my documents?

Applications :: ITunes Freezing During Launch And MP3 Playback/causing System To Lag

Jul 16, 2010

Before anyone says anything: Yes, I did do my research with MRGoogle before creating this thread. Most of the questions people had ever never answered (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=791337) or the posts where from 2+ years ago and not that relevant to the newer releases of iTunes.

Anyway, I decided to do a bit of song searching on iTunes today. I have a bunch of songs from the DDR series that I wanted to find the original, full versions of. So I opened up iTunes (which took about 30 seconds to load, mouse cursor pinwheeling the entire time) and opened up a playlist of said songs in a separate window. In the main window I opened up the iTunes store and started my search. To pass the time, I played the playlist in the background while switch between the two windows to check song tiles, artist names, and the like. While searching for songs, iTunes would randomly start pinwheeling for ~5 seconds, music still playing in the background. The same thing happened when I tired to change to a different song in the playlist. I tried to open TextEdit so I could copy down the songs I couldn't find in the iTunes store and the system pinwheeled yet again. It 5+ seconds to open TextEdit. Even when I'm running Firefox with multiple tabs and windows open, it opens instantly.

I know my machine is a bit old (Early 2008 MBP 2.4 C2D) but its not ancient. I'm running 4GB for crying out loud. I've had similar issues in the past that got so bad I stopped using iTunes all together for awhile. I've tried installing iTunes, uninstalling iTunes, even going so far as to remove most of the iTunes-related fumes from my Library. Nothing seems to help.

I'm at a loss to why this is happening. Originally I thought it was a corrupt library or something, but I've rebuilt my library and it was a temporary fix. Anyone here have ideas about what I can do?
