MacBook Pro :: Black Screen Or Multicolored Horizontal Lines All Over

A few days ago my Mac Book Pro screen freaked out. Specifically, it had multicolored horizontal lines all over, but underneath I could see a dark grey dialogue box telling my to restart the computer. Now, about two thirds of the time, when I try to start up the screen stays black and it does not make any startup noises but the power light comes on steady. One time this was accompanied by a beeping tone that beeped in sets of three. The other one third of the time it starts up fine. Once it shut itself down after the horizontal lines appeared again. Once it has frozen while on the screensaver and I had to manually shut it down. My computer is still under warrantee but I live over an hour and a half from the nearest apple store.

MacBook Pro :: Black Horizontal Lines Appear / Disappear Quickly
I have my MBP Alu since October 2008 and so far I am just in love with the machine. The only problem that started to appear recently is the black thin lines that appear on the screen for a very short period of time (shorter than 1 sec) and disappear very quickly. Imagine just a very thin black horizontal line appearing in some place on the screen. See the picture, please: [URL]. It doesn't happen that often, maybe 2 times in an hour.

When it happens, I use the integrated Nvidia 9400M graphic chip. I see it a lot when I use Firefox and listen to the music through AirTunes. Maybe there is a connection between those two things. Sometimes I see it just on the desktop without Firefox turned on. To be honest I start to worry about my laptop. Maybe my graphic card is about to die. I have been hoping that the recent update 10.5.7 would solve the issue, but it is not the case..

MacBook Aluminum :: Flickering Multicolored Lines In Middle Of Screen
On some graphics I get a stack of flickering, multicolored lines appearing in the middle of my screen. This sometimes happens with pictures on webpages or on my background when I use Expose. They aren't consistent and come and go seemingly randomly. The computer is less than a month old. I tried taking a screen shot, but nothing showed up leading me to believe its a hardware issue.

MacBook Pro :: Monitor Display Not Working Fine / Horizontal Scan Lines And Black Out Occasionally
So I had a recently purchased 17" BTO with the 7200RPM drive that worked great, but with one issue - the display would have horizontal scan lines and black out occasionally. So I called up Apple and eventually managed to get a cross-ship set up(they let me hold on to my current unit, charge my credit card and send me a second brand new 17" unit as a replacement, and then refund me for the second 17" after I send back the defective unit).

Anyway, the replacement unit looks great, but with one issue - there's a very small light dent on the bottom panel(maybe about the size of a dime). I was annoyed but don't think this is worth having to exchange, since I could probably just unscrew the panel and pop it back into place.

However, what really got to me was the fact that my replacement unit was slightly louder than my original - my original is so silent that I can't even tell it's on. However, with my replacement unit, I can hear the hard drive spinning, which is slightly annoying.

Anyway, I proceeded to restore from a time machine backup and test my replacement unit when I noticed that it would occasionally get the hard drive click + beep + freeze issue that many others who have the 7200 RPM drive seem to be facing. It's extremely annoying, and more importantly I miss the complete silence of my older unit.

My question is, while I'm still in possession of both units(which both have the exact same specs, same 7200 RPM drive, etc.), should I simply just open both up and take the silent(good) hard drive from my old unit and put it into my new one?

The click+beep freeze issue is really pissing me off, and my old unit didn't suffer from it - it's just this replacement one(doesn't make any sense).Anyway, would notice if I switched the hard drive? Would I get screwed somehow? Do they keep track of the hard drive serials or something?

I really don't want to go through the pain of sending this back, especially considering that a LOT of people are suffering from this issue, and I don't want to end up with another defective drive. I'm sick and tired of games and just want a computer that WORKS.

MacBook Pro :: Occasionally Getting Three Horizontal Lines On Screen
I'm new to mac in general. I totally love it, and will never go back to a 'PC' again, ever! On my new MBP (late08) I am occasionally getting three horizontal lines, at the same place on my screen. It happens like once a day, or once every other day or so. The lines look EXACTLY like the three horizontal lines at the bottom right of all windows (where you click and drag to resize a window), but they just sit there on the screen, above everything, and always at exactly the same place. I took a screenshot and would love to share it with you all, unless someone knows right off the bat what this problem could be? Other than this minor issue, I've had no problems. Should I take it into a store?

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Know Horizontal Lines Across The Screen In MBP?
I have a MBP purchased in late 2006 so it's fairly old.

Lately I've been having really random lock ups and freezing maybe once every week or so. Sometimes when I hard reset it, there's a few horizontal lines across the screen, usually just on the background. It'll go away if I restart it again.

I used the onboard disk checker and no problems are detected. Is this a sign that the hardware will fail soon?

OS X :: Macbook Pro (2007) Black & White Horizontal Lines & Doesn't Boot Up?
There's some known documented issues concerning the Nvidia graphics chip in the particular model of macbook pro I have.

Basically when turning on the machine, the screen is filled with black & white horizontal strips like a piano keyboard, but thats it - it doesn't actually boot up fully at all, you cannot hear the hard drive running !

Would the hard drive have anything to do with this ?

I explained this to apple telephone support & they informed of the article

[URL]

[URL]

& stated that the symptoms were linked.

On taking the mac to an apple store they ran a special 'firmware' boot up 'test' using an instore ipod to determine if it was a faulty Nvidia chip, so as to prove to Nvidia, the company funding the repairs whether it is that to blame.

Because the machine didn't even boot up & complete the 'test' they couldn't say whether it was the graphics chip - so 'no free repair' under extended warranty & the final answer was as usual ' buy a new logic board' that will cure it !

MacBook Pro :: Screen Freezing, Horizontal Lines - High Pitched Noise?
I bought the new Macbook Pro a couple days after it came out. I upgraded to 4GB of memory right away and have had weird horizontal lines about an inch thick all the way across my screen like a striped shirt and a high-pitched noise coming from it randomly. Usually it is when I am watching a video or listening to music...it freezes so I have to force the computer off and restart it. It is really strange. I took it in to Apple and they replaced the computer but it is still happening on the new one. I called the memory company tech support and they said to reinstall the OS and try again. I did....same problem. I did a memory test and it showed no problems with the memory. i did a hardware test and it said there are no problems. I checked the memory and it is installed properly.

MacBook Aluminum :: Computer Freezes And Screen Has Horizontal Lines
I was hoping this would eventually stop with OS10.6 but I actually think it got worse as it happened 3 times today and twice yesterday since the upgrade. I initially suspected the 24" cinema display screen that I use for my large excel spreadsheets, but then it happened also when I was traveling. From then, the computer also started to freeze in its sleep and being unwakeable from time to time. It is really getting on my nerves as it starts running like a PC. So anyway, I think I am going to bring it to a certified apple center. Here is a picture of the macbook going nuts with lines, etc...what do you think? A week ago I attempted to view the G4 screen. Instead of the normal display, Screen Sharing showed a screen of colored horizontal lines of varying heights. There were a few random blocks with different color lines. Nothing on the screen was recognizable.

The same display problem just occurred with an iChat screen sharing session (iChat 5.0.3 viewing iChat 4.0.8 on the G4). Restarting the G4 cleared up the problem.

When I boot into Linux or Windows the same problem appears, so it's probably a hardware problem.

I have no expensive adaptor to connect to an external lcd screen, so I don't know yet if the problem is in the mac screen or in the cabling or somewhere else...

Here are 2 screenshots of black squares a drawed in Illustrator, one taken on the mac (cmd + shift + 3)

one taken with a camera (where you can see the red lines)

MacBook Pro :: Screen Consists Of Black And White Bars / Lines?
I got a brand new 15" i7 MacBook Pro today. Things were going fine until this evening, when I clicked on something (not sure what) and suddenly my screen went from normal to a series of black and white horizontal lines or bars, each about 1/2 inch thick. I could still see and move my cursor around, but couldn't see anything else. The computer responded to keyboard input and I was able to restart.

On restart the grey apple appeared along with the spinning wheel. Then the screen went blue, just like it always does before you get to the logon screen. But instead of the logon screen with space background, it went back to the black and white bars.I shut it down and restarted again, this time in Safe Mode, and am having no problems. (Other than being in Safe Mode, of course!)I also ran the hardware diagnostics and they're telling me the computer is fine.I'm back in Safe Mode to send this. Can anyone suggest anything else? I'm leaning towards thinking this is a software issue, that there's some preference file or something I need to delete, I just don't know where to begin.

OS X Leopard :: Horizontal Lines Appearing On Screen Display
I updated to Leopard 10.5.6 two weeks ago from Tiger 10.4.12. Almost immediately, I started seeing horizontal lines on my screen, especially in Safari. I hoped updating to 10.5.7 would fix this. It doesn't happen nearly as often, but it still happens. I also was having the freeze up problem mentioned in another thread. I repaired permissions and haven't had a screen freeze since, but now have a whole new problem. I'm noticing sometimes when I'm watching videos and occasionally even when I'm just scrolling down my browser, for literally a second or less I'll see something that looks like a tear in my screen, like the screen literally developed a rip in it and peeled apart. It's not a continuous or predictable problem, just a nuisance--especially considering none of these things happened when I was running Tiger. The graphics engine in this Mac is an ATI Radeon X1600. Are there updated drivers I need to download to stop these things from happening? I've run Disk Utility on my hard drive and it shows no issues.

It started happening after i left my mac running in vista for about 10mins, when i got home the screen had gone black, but it had a backlight so i knew it wasnt turned off. So i held down the On/Off button at the back and when i booted it back up the resolution went huge and very fuzzy so i cannot see whats going on. I think it might be the graphics card becasue while playing games its comes up with errors saying the graphics driver stopped working or something along those lines. Ever once in a while, usually during high performance task (like watching flash or encoding with handbrake) the temperature of my cpu will spike to 85-90 degrees celsius and then the system freezes.

During this freeze, I can still move my mouse, but I am unable to click on anything on the dock or any program. Moving the mouse over the dock does not invoke the magnification either. I have to do a hard reset to fix the problem.

Also every once in a while, a long blue horizontal line will appear in on the screen. (sometimes their in iChat windows, sometimes safari, and sometimes the desktop as shown in the photo).

IMac Intel :: Late-2006 Has Horizontal Lines On Screen, Freezes And Shuts Down?
My late-2006 20" iMac has been playing up for around a year now, having horizontal lines appearing on screen, randomly coloured pixels appearing on screen, frequent freezes whenever certain GPU tasks are performed (nothing too intensive either, simply watching a 10mb file on Quicktime would occasionally cause the system to freeze/crash) and many more issues. Initially I thought it may of been a software issue so I reformatted my hard drive, after reinstalling everything the problem lingered. By then I was certain it was a manufacturing issue, something that was solidified after I found this petition that was asking for the recall of these late-2006 iMacs due to problems identical to the ones I have listed.
