I was in the middle of migrating my data from my pc to my mac (refurbished) and it stopped at about 3/4ths of the way. I want to know if any of the data was actually put on the mac or if it's an all or nothing transfer.

Here's what's happening: We can connect the iBook to the MacBook with a FireWire cable and boot the iBook into FireWire Target Disk Mode (TDM) successfully. The MacBook recognizes the iBook and mounts it as a drive on the desktop. When we try to launch Migration Assistant, it asks us where the old data is located. Specifying another Mac (which is the logical choice) causes it to beachball for about 10 minutes then tell us to connect the two computers with a FireWire cable and boot the other one into TDM, which we've already done. Choosing from a Time Machine backup or other disk causes it to display a blank window, as if it can't detect any other systems.

Both with Lion.it just clonated the old MBP into the new one (the main user), wich replaced some new apps (ilife, and others) with the old vervions tha were im the old MBP.I tried to erase the Macintosh HD, reinstall Lion from scratch but it happened again. Today I started a brand new MacBook Pro for the first time and followed the on-screen prompts to transfer data from an older Mac (MBP 2.16GHz Core2Duo running 10.6.8) via firewire. The procedure was different from the one I am accustomed to, which involves starting the old machine in target disc mode. This time, I was instructed to open Migration Assistant on the old MBP and select "from this Mac". This I did, whereupon it appeared that Migration Assistant on the new MBP established a connection with the old MBP, which was already connected to the new MBP with a Firewire cable. But once the transfer started, it progressed at a snail's pace. It started almost 5 hours ago and will very likely continue all night long. It occurred to me that the transfer is proceeding as though it were taking place over wi-fi.
Is it possible that OS X Lion took it upon itself to connect with the old MBP over wi-fi even though the two machines were wired together via Firewire? I do not recall having any opportunity to explicitly select Firewire as the transfer mode.
Used Migration Assistant to move everything from iMac 24" running OS 10.6 to new iMac 27" running OS 10.7. Multiple data files didn't get transferred. One was part of entrys in address book. Is there anyway to manually transfer the data over? Where are the data files located?

But it never gets beyond Step 4 (where it's trying to see other Macs on the wireless network). We don't have the same revision of the OS (the 15" has 10.5.8 whereas the 13" is a brand-new Snow Leopard), so is this the problem for some reason?

I mistakenly(?) thought i could change Permissions by selecting "Everyone" from the startup volume HD icon's Permissions panel and in turn, chose "Apply to All Enclosed Files and Folders" option thinking this would allow all other computers on a small office network to have total free and clear no-security-required, file-sharing read/write- access to this Imac's contents. After doing this and attempting reboot, I couldn't get access to the OS at all even after i ran DiskWarrior and DiskUtilities, so, wound up doing Archive/Install - but used an OS 10.5 disk because i (mistakenly)thought that my 10.6 Snow Leopard disk was only an Updater. So after installing 10.5 again I ran the OS 10.63 disk's installer, bringing the new System Folder up to Snow Leopard. I'm up and running - most system software updates downloaded/done. Problem is now this -- stuff like: Email Clients, Itunes, Browsers, any Apps that had associated data/content files isn't recognizing the old, original contents that belonged to them - instead, these apps all

I transferred about 400 gigs of data from my MacBook Pro to my new iMac using Migration Assistant, but can't find any of my data on Finder. I'm thinking that the data got transferred but not cataloged. Finder shows about 400 gigs of my hard drive being used, but the files it shows don't come anywhere close to 400 gigs. I just bought a new Mac Mini (Late 2014, ships with Yosemite) to replace a defunct MacBook Pro (Late 2008, last ran 10.8.5). I have a local administrative user account and some server and network data that I want to migrate from the latest Time Machine backup of the MacBook Pro to the Mini. I don't want to copy anything else to the Mini. Neither Setup Assistant nor Migration Assistant will let me deselect anything though. All the check boxes are greyed out. Clicking on them does not uncheck them. This forces me to copy everything from the Time Machine backup to the Mini. Then the Mini won't restart.  It won't even boot into safe mode. It just gets stuck in a reboot-loop until I enter recovery mode, wipe the system drive, and reinstall Yosemite.Â

Yesterday I did a migration assistant (MacBook Pro to MacPro)to get a music file from a friends computer and what i think happened is that I migrated his WHOLE system because now my hard drive has 4.3 GB left when before it was virtually empty because I use ext. hard drives. My question is WHERE are all these files because I dont see any new files (not even the music file that I intended on migrating) but my hard drive is filled up. And if possible, can I remove all the files at once since they all came at once?

I purchased a new Macbook pro( OS Lion) and used migration assistant to migrate my files form (OS Snow Leopard) this worked really well. The only problem is that my office 2011 requires me to key in my product key again. I cant find the disk with the sleeve with the key number on it but the box says it covers two machines at home so I should have no problem. Does any one know how I can find my product key on my snow leopard Mac so I can use office 2011 on my new mac.Â

I just used migration assistant to bring my data from my pc laptop to my new macbook air. It brought it over, and deposited it under a new user id. But I can't log in as that user because it says the password expired, and doesn't recognize the password I had on my pc (awful vista). When I try to change the password on system prefs, those usernames are greyed out and can't be changed.Â

I just bought a new MacBook Pro because my other computer pretty much died, in that the screen can no longer be seen. The guy at the store told me it was probably a bad cable running from the computer to the monitor. Anyways, I am trying to get stuff off of my old computer with migration assistant. Right now, I cannot even see if my old computer is logged in, connected to the internet, or anything. In trying to using the network migration assistant, it prompts me to right in a set of numbers to connect with my old computer. How can I do that when I cannot see the screen? Would it work if I bought a cable to connect the two, therefore not requiring me to put in a password or numbers in my old computer?

I have a very fast internet connection, so I am not sure why this would be happening. Is there a way to use an ethernet cable instead of wifi? I tried connecting the two computers with an ethernet on a whim but my Mac didn't reconginze the PC, and vicea versa. Â

Trying to resurrect my old MacBook Pro. Installed a fresh Snow Leopard system on it, then used Migration Assistant to get my stuff off my iMac (running Lion that I purchased from AppStore). First time, migrated from a Time Machine backup. Then, erased and installed again and migrated via Firewire directly from iMac. Problem is, both times, I get to the login/startup screen of the MacBook and it will not accept my password. Using the same password I used on the iMac. My user name and even the custom icon show up properly.Â

I've just purchased a new MacBook pro, and previously I had a windows PC so I'm new to Mac OS X, so please don't go using super technical vocab I've read through Apple's article explaining how to use the migration assistant, and it says that the mac will create a new user with the migrated data. So, do I need to make a temporary user, use the migration assistant, and then delete the original user I made first? Or could I make a user, use the assistant, and copy the data from the new user made by the assistant to the original one?Â
