MacBook Air :: MacBook Air Grey Line Photos
May 16, 2009
Ok, I just got my MBA. People have being talking about the grey line issue. I googled and only found 2 photos.
Photo 1.
I can't really see where the line is on photo 1. If you know, can you highlight it and reply this thread?
Photo 2
I can see clearly that the line is across the apple logo. But does this happen at other location on the screen as well? If this is it, then I think mine's ok.

Whenever I try to use Screen Sharing to control this one particular Mac Mini, and someone else is using the mini, and I pick "Connect to Virtual Display", I get dropped to a grey linen screen. Like the login screen, but without a list of usernames or anything. There it sits. Here is what I see in the console of the mac mini when I try and use a virtual display from the other machine:Â
3/10/12 7:30:04.291 AM mds: (Error) Backup: Couldn't stat source path '/Users/glados/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.finder.savedState/window_3.data' -- importing from backup path instead

My line out port on my late 2007 white macbook recently died and I no longer have AppleCare. I never use the line in port on my computer and use the line out quite alot. I have tried all kinds of fixes to fix the problem but nothing works. I would like to use the line in port as a line out port. I am not sure if this is possible so I thought I would ask here if anyone knew of a way.

My old ti-book won't boot, tried it with the cd, zapped the pram, nothing. So I hooked it to my MacBook Pro via firewire and started it as a T drive. But I can't find our family photos or email (mac mail) files anywhere.
I've also searched the following:

Double poll here. There are two questions:
How much DATA do you have Oo-line?
This is data and not total capacity. This includes all your on-line data: music, images, video, the OS, all of it. It doesn't include back-up data even if it's on-line like Time Machine tho. Just active data.
And of the on-line storage devices used for that DATA totally, what % are they filled to?
For example if you had two 500 GB drives and about 400 GB of data you would answer:
"I have < 500 GB of DATA on-line." and,"My on-line storage is between 25% and 50% full.".

i'm having some issues recording in garage band which should hopefully be easy to clear up. i record an instrumental track into garage band through the line-in jack in the back. the track shows up in garage band just fine and plays, but i'm running into trouble recording while that track is playing. i plug my headphones in so i can try to hear the track while i am recording vocals, but i am unable to hear the track. i checked the inputs/outputs in system preferences and output is set to headphones, microphone is set to line in. so i'm not too sure what it could be.

I've had this problem since Friday with my Mac Pro (March 2009) and haven't been able to solve it.
On Friday my speakers suddenly stopped working. After first having confirmed that the speakers were working with another source, I tried headphones both in frontal headphone slot and with the analog line out in the back, both without success. There's a red light in the optical audio out, indicating that it's on for some reason, although I have selected different audio out source. The internal speaker works just fine, only the normal audio out doesn't give me anything.
I found a thread in the MBP section similar to this problem, but solutions for MBP didn't work.

Seems like it should be a straight forward deal, but it's not obvious how to make this happen. I can tell the audio is coming in, as the input levels are reflected under System Pref's. But I can't hear the audio on the line-out speakers and there doesn't seem to be an option to explicitly route the audio.Â

I am trying to record a talk from my MD player using the line-in on my macbook, but I have no idea how to do it. (I have selected the line-in in the input and it shows that it is receiving the input, but there is no sound.)

I have a feeling they'll eventually phase out the MacBook line in favor of the MBP/MBA notebooks. The 13" MBP is almost the same as the MacBook in terms of specs, the only real difference being the aluminum uni-body, which should really be included in the entire MacBook family anyway. I can see how the Air and Pro are two different beasts entirely, but the negligible differences between the 13" Pro and the regular MacBook no longer makes sense to have them separate. The white MacBook is also starting to look a bit dated.

I've got some synths connected to a mixer, which I've got going into my Mac's line in. It hears it fine, and I can record what's coming in via a wave recorder, but I want to be able to HEAR what is coming in too. I mean like, have it playthrough the computer and right to the speakers.

i just bought a used macbook, for about 1 year now there has been a red pixel line on the lower left side of the screen and the pixel line runs about 4 inches up, i ran a pixel check and tried massaging the screen and nothing works, i ran a program called PiXel and found out that it turns red on red, yellow on when all the other colors on the screen are blue and And it turns reddish when all the other colors are blue, it turns orange-yellowish when all the colors on the screen are black and its white when all the colors are white.
now my question is do i need a new lcd screen? or do you believe it's one of the connectors? or do you think its the logic board?

I Have reason to believe that Arrendale Processors will not be coming to the Macbook Pro line anytime soon. As you all may know Apple is currently using NVIDIA as its primary chipset. If apple was going to transition to Arrendale (nehalem) processors, they would likely use NVIDIA as their primary chipset. BUT there is a battle between NVIDIA and Intel (because of licensing) and Intel will not let NVIDIA make chipsets for its Nehalem micro-architecture, So if Apple was to transition to Arrendale they would likely have to use Intel's chipset (which is also their intergraded graphics) or they will have to stick with Penryn as their processors and use keep using NVIDIA as their chipset.

today I just upgraded my stock Macbook hard drive to a Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid 500GB 7200 RPM drive, and I upgraded the stock RAM to 8GB of DDR3 1333. After the upgrade, everything worked smoothly. And freaking screamed out frames on Wolfenstein and Devil May Cry 4 in Boot Camp! Barely dropped under 50 FPS on high settings. It was a beautiful thing When I quit Wolfenstein, and rebooted using the Windows menu, OSX was starting up normally. Then a grey progress bar loaded up and took about five minutes to fill. I should also mention that the Wolenstein disc was still in the drive when this happened, in case that's in any way relevant. I wondered what was wrong, so I restarted from the Apple Menu and got it again. And then a third time. So now I'm making a full backup onto my external drive. In case it's a failing hard drive like most of the stuff I found from googling and searching on here said it was, if the progress bar showed up numerous times. And I'm writing this question in the hope that someone highly competent answers. I really know my hardware stuff, I have my A+ certification for my job and a computer science and engineering degree from CMU i honestly barely use, this is just a problem I haven't ever encountered before. Could anyone shed some light on exactly why the bar is showing up for me, and how I can fix it?

When my son's computer is turned on it just goes to grey screen.. I've tried a number of troubleshooting things...starting while holding "c" to boot with install disk...starting holding "shift" for safe boot. I did the PRM (?) reset thing holding Apple-option-p-r keys while starting and that did add the start up chime...before it would just go to the grey screen, no chime no spinning wheel...but still no boot. The computer is still under warranty but soonest appointment at Apple Store is 3 days from now!!!

I have a weird problem going on currently. My 13 inch macbook pro (2009) works PERFECT but I've tried 3 times to update to the OSX to 10.6.3 or 10.6.4 and everytime the update works but after it reboots I get the grey screen of death.
When I have a time capable backup which I restore from when this happens so its not a big deal however whenever I restore I no longer have access to the old history. It's like the drive cannot go back in time. Is this normal?

Just placed a new harddrive in my macbook pro and had the geeks at the Genius bar to install the OS system. Now I'm dealing with a clicking noise and a grey screen with a question mark on it. Tried to place the install dvd in and boot from the it won't. I did notice after going to the Disk utility that my hardrrive isn't recognized.

I tried to install 10.6 on my 10.5.8 Macbook Pro. It installed just fine, I restarted, it goes through the apple logo and asks me to pick a language. I pick english, it goes to the grey screen and stops there forever. I'd be happy just to go back to 10.5.8, I just don't want to lose all my stuff. Also, all the function buttons work (volume, adjust screen brightness, etc). Just nothing else will.

Okay well, to start off, I got my MacBook from a distant family member who got a new one so they let me have their old one. They got it from a pawn shop so I don't have the disk that we got the OS from but it hasn't had any issues UNTIL NOW. I need to use my laptop for a homework assignment. Everytime I turn it on it'll just stay on the loading screen, I left it for 4 hours yesterday and it still wouldn't work. I reset the (insert acronym here) thing already, the thing where you press control, option, P, R keys at start up. because my assignment is on the laptop and it's due tomorrow.

My Macbook Pro (2008) was upgraded to Lion 10.7.2 before I bought it used. It's always been slow and after a little while it won't boot up properly, it only gets as far as the apple logo with the spinning wheel underneath.
I've have used Recovery HD and Disk Utility to repair/verify the hard drive and after the repair it still won't boot up past the apple logo. I downloaded OSX Lion 10.7.4 (client combo) update onto an external drive but I can't install the update when using Recovery HD. I've tried mounting the existing hard drive onto an external drive, but I get an error mesage immediately.
There are only a few folders I need to take from the existing hard drive in the Macbook Pro. What can I do to either access my hard drive or get it to boot up properly? I have a retail copy of a Snow Leopard DVD that I can use. I believe I might have saved Lion onto a DVD a while ago, but Apple seems to insist we intall by downloading the latest Lion? Basically I need to access the hard drive without erasing the data.
