Mac Pro :: How To Make Output Sound From The Digital Output And Line Out

want to simultaneously output sound from the Digital Output and Line Out. (The computer is wired to play music around the house). My old 2003 G5 did this no problem. I've looked into setting up an aggregate device in Audi MIDI Setup but that still only seems me let have one audio output source.

MacBook :: Keeps Switching Between Internal Output And Digital Output For Sound?
My sound keeps turning off. When I check the settings, the output device switches randomly between Internal and Digital output. I have no idea where the Digitial Output is coming from and this started about a month again. It switches randomly and then I loose all sound for a few seconds. Sometimes it happens once then stops for a few days, other times it switches back and forth for 5 min. No idea!!!

MacBook Pro :: Digital Sound Output Is Often Silent?
Short sounds (email notifications, system sounds, etc) usually don't make it through the digital output (mini-toslink optical cable) that connects my new MacBook Pro to my stereo.

Here's why:

It seems that the digital-out goes into a sort of "sleep" mode after a minute or two of silence, and then requires about 2 seconds to wake back up after a new sound is played. For instance, if I hit PLAY on a song, it will chop off the first 2 seconds of the song.

Not a big deal for music listening. But shorter sounds like email notifications are completely silenced by this 2-second delay.

This was not a problem on my old (2006) MacBook Pro. It would cut off a fraction of a second of the first sound it played in the morning, but then stay fully on for many hours after that.

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? Of course the obvious solution would be to simply hook the system up with analog cables, but I love the digital cable for its clarity and immunity to interference (my office has lots of electrical hum).

MacBook Pro :: Sound Output Permanently Digital Out?
Yesterday I was at a shoot and brought my laptop just to check email periodically. That is truly all I did. And yet, at a certain point I went to play something out loud and when clicking the volume button it seems I can't control the sound, and I don't hear anything.

When I go into preferences it reads: Digital Output - built in output

When I plug in headphones that changes to: Headphones - built in output

and I can hear again.

Still, I have never used digital output. Why is that the new default? Where did my other option go? How can I fix this?

MacBook Pro :: Digital Audio Output - No Sound
MBP connected to ONKYO HTIB via TosLink cable.

Cable tested and known good, input on HTIB tested and known good.

When Cable (and adapter) are plugged into MBP, Sound prefs panel switches to Digital Output, as does MIDI App. I just get no output of sound. HTIB is set to auto detect DTS or PCM and MIDIApp set to 44k/2ch 24bit. Even though I see light from Output end of cable, I cant get any sound output...iTunes, system beeps, nothing. I pull the adapter and prefs switches back to internal speakers and sound comes out of speakers.

I have tried all configurations of MIDI App, Sound Prefs, ONKYO input configs. I am at a loss.

Mac Mini :: Sound Output To Home Theater System Optical / Digital
I need to hook the sound to a Sony Home Theater System for a client that does not have assignable inputs. The Mac Mini connects via HDMI and sound is supplied to the TV ok. On the Home Theater System the assigned sound source to that HDMI port is Coax so basically am I write in thinking I need one of these

TOSlink Optical Audio Digital Cable to Toslink 3.5mm [URL]
and then one of these
Digital Fiber Optical (Toslink) Female to Digital Coaxial (S/PDIF) Female Converter [URL]
and then a standard digital Coax cable to complete the connection.

I see from the Apple tech specs that they do not mention the 2010 Mac Mini as having optical, they do mention optical for the 2009 model and I see on the forums that people are using such connections, can I actually use the above solution with this model Mac Mini?

MacBook Pro :: How To Turn Off Digital Output
So I've posted this question before a few months a go. None of the answers I got helped. This is kind of my last effort before I have to send my baby to Apple and pay God knows how much. I hear this is pretty common, but my audio jack is stuck on digital output. I've got the whole red LED light shining through it deal. I was told it was a swtich in the jack that had been triggered and all I had to do was a) stick a toothpick in it and wiggle it around till it trips the switch. b) spray some compressed air in there. Well I 've tried the first a hundred times a hundred different ways and I just spent 10 bucks on can of air, and that didn't work either.

Mac Mini :: Losing Digital Audio Output From SPDIF
I have a 2010 Mac Mini connected to my HDTV/AV Receiver. I send digital audio to the av receiver with an optical cable. I have sleep disabled for OTA DVR. I have not tried to see if it will wake the mini to record. I have it working, but often upon using the mini the next day, the device changes away from the Digital Out to the Soundflower 2 channel output device. This virtual output is used by one of the rogueamoeba applications to catch audio streams. At night the AV receiver is turned off, so the mini may think the digital output has failed and does some sort of failover to the next device.

Mac Pro :: Sound System - Getting Audio Through Optical Output
I recently bought a 2009 Mac Pro. Now, I'm trying to setup a small bedroom home theater. And sound is still my main problem here. I used my Mac Pro mainly for doing graphic works, listening to music, watching movie, and gaming sometimes.

Here is what I currently have.
8-Core Mac Pro
40" 1080p LCD TV for Movie
24" LCD for doing graphic work
Harman Kardon Sound sticks (trying to get rid of this and replace it with a 5.1 or 7.1 system)

And here is what I'm buying
5.1 or 7.1 Receiver
Speakers

My plan is to get audio out through the optical output. But according to several articles I read online, optical output does not transmit audio when I play music on iTunes or play games (in BootCamp), is it true? So far, I couldn't find any sound card (internal or external) which work for mac pro that has 3 analog 5.1 signal output which I can use with standard 5.1 speakers. The only things I found is the Creative DDTS-100 and the FireWire which were all discontinued. What other options do I have?

MacBook Pro :: Getting Low Quality Audio From Optical Digital Output?
My MacBookPro5,1 2.66 GHz sounds much worse using its built-in optical digital output than when using the AirPort Express digital output, both fed into the same high-quality Meridian 203 D/A converter. The MBP output seems to be processed or equalized and sounds rather distorted, even though the EQ, Sound Check and Sound Enhancer are turned off in iTunes. Why is this?. The digital audio output should be as unprocessed as possible. How can I bypass all signal processing and get the purest possible digital output from my MBP without resorting to send it to the Airport Express?.

Mac Mini :: 3.5mm Jack Accommodate Digital Optical Audio Output
I just picked up a new 1.83 core 2 duo at a price I couldn't pass up. I am going to use it as a HTPC so I have my hdmi cable, etc. All hooked up and ready to go. Last bit is the audio but I am having a bit of trouble. I bought a standard miniplug cable and assumed it would plug in just like my macbook. The problem is that the miniplug doesn't fit in the jack on the mini. I understand that the jack on the mini is a combo analog/optical jack but as you see below, it seems as though a standard miniplug y cable should work.

From the Apple support website:
The headphone / line output jack accommodates digital optical audio output, analog audio output with a 24-bit, 44.1-192 kHz D/A converter, digital audio output up to 24-bit stereo and 44.1-192 kHz sampling rate and supporting encoded digital audio output (AC3 and DTS). For analog headphone / line output a standard audio cable with 3.5mm metal plug should be used.

For digital audio, a standard toslink cable with a toslink mini-plug adapter can be used.I have done my research and some reading and can go out and buy an optical cable plus a miniplug/optical adapter but would rather go the analog route (I understand the quality difference) because I already have the cables and don't have a receiver or speakers, just my tv speakers.

Mac Pro :: No Audio Output At All When Digital Audio Cable Is Connected?
Question: Can anyone else send digital audio into their Mac Pro and hear it? I can't. I see level coming into Mac Pro perfectly in Sound Prefs Input page and the level is boucning in time with music coming from iTunes on my MBP, I stop playback, level dies, so I know digital audio is coming into my Mac Pro.

I know digital audio out on the Mac Pro works because I monitor it this way daily on my Lavry DA10 out to my speakers. Optical cable right out and optical into the DA10. Beautiful sound.

Problem: Connecting an optical cable to the Mac Pro, suddenly ALL OUTPUTS are dead. Nothing, no headphone, internal speaker, digital (didn't test analog out but regardless..) no audio while toggling through AMS or Sound Prefs Audio output tab.

back to audio hijack for now. I paid for the program since it's pretty rockin anyways.

Anyone have any clue? I'm sending 44.1/24 and receiving 44.1/24 and I've swapped optical cables yet I know both of these work individually.

3) force resetting to internal audio osx

4) force reset coreaudio osx

I thought I'd ask first before calling Apple...

Only started happening last night but when I plugin my speakers, headphones or whatever else into the sound output of my MBP the left speaker has horrendous static and you can kinda hear internal things i.e. moving the mouse around, clicking on stuff etc. The internal speakers are fine though.

I've gone into Audio MIDI Setup and clicked on Configure Speakers so I can hear the output from each speaker and nothing comes out of the left external speaker - again, fine when listening through the internal ones.

Now, I'm sure this going to have to be a trip to the Apple store but just wanted to check before I do.

MacBook Pro :: Sound Output Device Stuck On Headphones - Other Sound Related Options ?
This started happening randomly earlier tonight, and I haven't managed to find a fix just yet.I was encoding a video file for quite awhile (I don't think that parts important, but I thought I'd include it anyway) and then I tried to play a youtube video. I noticed there was no sound, so I tried to up the volume using the Volume Up key on the keyboard. The volume visualisation appeared on the screen like normal (albeit a bit laggy), but the sound still didn't change, neither did I get the usual 'click' noise you get when you change the volume.I went looking into the sound options in the system prefs. only to find that the Output Sound device was headphones. For a test I plugged in some headphones to see what happened and, low and behold, the Output Sound device changed to the Internal Sound and my speakers were working again, but only with the headphones plugged in.
