Mac Pro :: TM Ran Out Of Space And Stopped Backing Up

Apr 7, 2008

I have a Mac Pro - 2 x 2.66, with 5 GB of RAM as my desktop, running Leopard; I have an internal 500 GB HD, and a 500 GB external that I use for Time Machine. The desktop has about 60 GB of iTunes material, and iPhoto is managing over 65,000 photos (almost 200 GB). This week, TM ran out of space and stopped backing up. There was a perplexing message stating something like, "You have 300 MB of material to backup and there is only 350 MB of space available on the backup volume." I excluded a bunch of stuff from the Time Machine backups, and it ran fine for a few days and ran out of space again. Thinking I just need more HD space.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Time Machine Has Stopped Backing Up

May 20, 2012

Time machine has stopped backing up. Under the 'Backing up' progress bar it says that it is scanning thousands of items followed by preparing thousands of items and then cleans up. However, after all of this the latest backup remains the same and no fresh backup is made. I think the problem started when I added a new user restored using time machine (my wife's computer was in for repair and she needed a temporary home!).

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Time Machine Has Simply Stopped Backing Up Any New Files?

Apr 28, 2012

I have a Macbook with OS X 10.6.8 and a 500GB external hard drive, which still has 208.5GB available. For some reason, Time Machine has simply stopped backing up any new files (documents, music, movies--anything). No items are set to be excluded from backups in Time Machine options except for the external hard drive itself. Also, no error messages appear, Time Machine seems to run just fine, but when I enter Time Machine, or look through the files on the hard drive, new files just aren't there. I am not very tech savvy, so I was not able to understand some of the answers people gave to similar questions on here. I did go to Pondini's website and followed as many troubleshooting instructions as I could understand (for example I did manage to do a full reset of Time Machine) but nothing changed. Do I just need to erase the entire backup drive and sart all over? If so, what will prevent this from happening again later on?

MacBook :: Time Machine Stopped Backing Up, "preparing"?

May 19, 2012

I recently moved and backed up an imac I left behind as well as my macbook using Time Machine. Everything was fine until Feb 27 when I was hit by a car and spent the next several weeks away from the computer.  When I did get the laptop back, I didn't have the backup drive.  Until a few days ago. So I reconnect and the backup starts with no problem until it finally tells me that I am out of space on the drive.  I decided that I should just dump the imac time machine folder since I had a duplicate on another drive.  That was much more complicated than I expected but I finally reclaimed a lot of space. The problem is that now when I connect time machine, it just says preparing backup.  I can enter time machine and see my last date before the accident, even going back into last year.  But it won't back up any more.

I've looked at the forums and on one suggestion deleted the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file after disconnecting the drive and then reconnecting everything but to no avail.  Here is the message on the Time Machine Widget buddy

Starting standard backup
Backup requested by user
Backing up to: /Volumes/2TB BB/Backups.backupdb
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUntrustable|

My first thought would be that the backup I trashed was the one for the macbook and not the imac but the last saved dates would all be wrong and it wouldn't explain my ability to enter time machine and look back at my computer's history. Anyway, At this point I really want to just have a complete back up that I can use to wipe my drive and reinstall everything.

OS X :: Memory Space Disappearing / Disk Space Reduces While Streaming Videos

Dec 2, 2009

I have been running out of hard drive space and have deleted a whole bunch of files... even deleted all the languages i didn't need from all my applications... about a week ago i freed up around 2GB.... but without saving and downloading anything my free space is now 70MB!! All I have been doing is watching streamed videos and I notice this reduces the drive space as I'm watching it!! Even opening firefox and some websites drops my memory by 0.1MB. I can't find anywhere where temporary files might be so i can delete them.

I never used to have this problem but I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that I now use wireless internet through a phone provider and a USB modem rather than my previous WiFi via cable broadband.

Can anybody shed some light on what is stealing my memory when browsing?

Cheers

MacBook Pro :: Time Machine Backup Fails Due To Lack Of Space, Although Plenty Of Space Available On External Drive?

Mar 14, 2012

I've bought a 1 TB iomega ego mac edition II external fire wire drive. Once connected it asked whether i want to create a password and whether i want my data encrypted, to which i answered yes. Then a time machine backup started and failed after backing up 5.25 GB out of 39 GB of my data with the following error: "The backup disk ran out of space unexpectedly. Time Machine will try to make more space available by removing expired backups during the next scheduled backup". When i look at time machine it shows there is 994.29 GB available on iomega ego drive. The drive then went into: "Encrypting Backup Disk" message and it takes forever.

MacBook Pro :: Disappearing HDD Space With Time / Less Space Showing In Finder

I have the MacBook Pro 2010 13" and recently I've noticed my disc space is slowly decreasing with use.

Im not downloading files or anything, but today I lost around 600 MB of space, I just kept opening my Finder to discover less and less disc space each time.

Is this normal or do I have a problem, this is the first time I've noticed it in the month and a half I've owned the machine.

Intel Mac :: HD Space Disappearing And Missing 100 GB Of Hard Disk Space?

Mar 21, 2012

Can anyone explain to me why, on my iMac's 500GB hard drive, the displayed size of the only 4 items on it is 207GB, that the info box on the HD itself says 393GB used?  Unless I failed grade 1 math, 500GB - 207GB = 293GB, right?  So where's the missing ~100GB?  That's a lot of space I know I haven't filled up.

Looking at my migration assistant, I won't be able to transfer a lot of my applications over. Anyone who wants to do some video work, bootcamping, or photoshopping/editing shouldn't even look at a 64gb. An ultimate 11" seems to be a must for the harddrive space and the 4gb of ram.

OS X :: Skipped Erase Free Space, No Space On HD?

Apr 23, 2009

I managed to interrupt the computer when I selected the "Erase Free Space" option. I had 0GB left on the computer and had to cancel almost all of the applications. I Googled and found that /var/root/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems should locate the file when entered in Terminal, but whenever I try that, it just says "Permission denied." It only asked for a password once, and when I tried entering it, it said that there was no such file. I located a few other temporary files and deleted those, and also tried making empty folders on the desktop to empty the trash. It freed up 6.7 GB, but there's still a lot of space missing. I'm not sure what else to try or how to get the space back.

OS X :: Time Machine Eating Disk Space / Eat GB's Of Hard Disk Space While Preparing Backup

Dec 11, 2009

whenever I run Time Machine on my PowerBook G4 (1.5 Ghz / 1Gb RAM / OSX 10.5.8) it will eat up GB's of hard disk space while 'preparing the backup'. After that it finishes the backup, but I don't get the space back. I'm talking about the internal HD, not the external target disk of course. Does Time Machine use the space to generate some temporary files? Any ideas how I can get my disk space back

Applications :: No Disk Space After Failed Disk Utility Erase Free Space?

Dec 15, 2010

I'm having a pretty serious problem. I attempted to erase the free space on my HD, as I do from time to time, except this time it appeared to hang/freeze at the end, when it gets to the part where it creates a temporary file. I waited for several minutes and it didn't move. I tried clicking the skip button, but that did nothing either, so I force quit Disk Utility.

The problem is, it left the disk at "Zero KB" of free space, effectively making my computer inoperable. I was in the process of studying for a huge exam tomorrow, and am currently flipping out.

If it matters, I'm on a Macbook Pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo, running 10.4.

I really don't want to have to reinstall the OS and import the old files, but my real fear is that I will have to do a fresh install of the OS.

Power Mac G5 :: Backing Up ITunes DVD

I have an iMac G4 (see specs below) and have recently been ripping tons of CD's into iTunes in preparation for a major home audio upgrade. I am now trying to back-up my iTunes library. However, when I try to use a blank CD-R, as expected, I get a message stating that there is not enough room, and that I must insert a blank DVD. The problem is, when I insert the blank DVD, it gets spit right back out. My computer has a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4480B. I tried to insert a Philips DVD+R 4.7 GB, 1-16x speed, 120 minute blank DVD. Anyone know why my computer won't read this DVD? Is there another DVD I should be using or will my computer simply not burn DVD's?
