Mac Pro :: Flashed Sapphire 4870 In Mac Pro - How To Install Snow Leopard And Configure It
Aug 30, 2009
I have a MacPro3,1. It currently runs 10.5.7, and I use it for development. I bought Snow Leopard on Friday, and I'm worried about installing it. I have a flashed Sapphire 4870 card running in addition to my 2600 XT (stock.) I made the BIOS with which I flashed the card using a python script I found on MacRumors.
I know the card works pretty well in 10.5.7. I have Dual-DVI, rotation support, and Quartz Extreme working. Sleep does not work (crashes the machine) but I'm pretty okay with that; I seldom sleep the Mac anyways.
I understand that to get everything working in Snow Leopard, I have to add the device ID to a .kext file that is installed with Snow Leopard.
I've found the device ID in System Profiler on this line:
Device ID:0x9440
Is this the right line to look for a device ID? Should I be looking somewhere else?
Also, on [URL], netkas says "just need to add dev-id into ATI4800Controller.kext." for my kind of card. How do I add the device ID to the kext? I think it goes somewhere in info.plist, but I'm not sure...
Will I still have Dual-DVI? It's very critical that I have it working, so I'd like to make sure before installing the new OS.

i recently bought a Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 512M GDDR5 PCI-E DUAL DVI-I/TVO SKU# 21133-00 S/N 180825044742 flashed with mac firmware.
The instructions said to take out my existing card put the sapphire in slot 1, then boot up and install drivers.
So i took my Nvidia 7300 GT card out of slot 1 and put in the 4870, then started up. I get the grey start up screen with the apple in low resolution for about 8 sec, then the screen just goes blank.
What am i doing wrong?... do i need to keep the Nvidia 7300 GT in slot 2, then boot up connected to that first?

I went for flashed Sapphire 4870 512 off eBay for my Mac Pro 1,1 running SL 10.6.2, with two Viewsonic VP2030b. The guy selling the card had sold flashed cards before and had 100% feedback, said the card worked with dual monitors and supported SL. Got the card, installed it without a problem, but could not get it to work with both monitors. Second monitor said no signal on both DVI channels. Checked all the wires, reinstalled, rebooted, no luck. Plugged both into my 7300GT, no issues at all. At one point, I got the left monitor to boot as the extended desktop, showing the dock but not showing the HDD or icons (which should be on the right screen), but the right screen still showed no signal and was black. Used the gather windows botton in the display preferences to see if adjusting settings helped, still nothing. Detect displays button was no help either. Is this a compatibility problem on my end or a flashing problem on his? Contacted him and he said he had no issues with his MP 1,1 and two 20" Apple displays.

Ever since the 3870 came out last year, I've been waiting to see if anyone was able to dump the ROM from the Mac version and flash a PC version with it. But it seems no one was able to do it.
How come suddenly everyone and their brother is now able to flash the PC 4870? Anyone know what the differences between the two are, that would prevent the 3870 from being flashed successfully?

I have a Mac Pro 1.1 and I've been successfully running a flashed XFX ATi 4870 card for a month or so.
Yesterday evening I left my computer in sleep mode, when I came back it appeared to be awake with only one of the two screens working and everything frozen. Both screens were connected to an Apple ATi 2600 XT and nothing was connected to the 4870.
I held down the power button and restarted, the fans on the graphics cards ramp up and then down as usual and the computer makes the startup dong noise. I can hear the hard drives and optical drives working as usual then the drives appear to shutdown and I'm left with the computer apparently doing nothing.
- Fans are running
- Screens are in standby (LED's on)
- Both screens are connected to the ATi 2600
- 2 x 20in Apple Cinema Displays
- Nothing is connected to the ATi 4870
- No LEDs are lit up inside the case
Once I remove the ATi 4870 the computer starts up normally, putting the 4870 back in give the same startup problem.
Is there anything I can do to get the 4870 working again?

I am looking at getting one from bruinmacs and was looking for feedback from others that may have bought one and whether there have been any problems.

I have just ordered a xfx 4870 that will be placed into my mac pro 2006 (1.1). I dont have the infamous power cables from ati so i was wondering if it would be possible to use the power from the optical drive. i have two 6-pin pcie power cables that each connects to a 4-pin molex. i addition to these i have a 4-pin molex Y splitter.
With this setup i should be able to feed the card with power but is this dangerous or will the system be unstable? what will happen

I recently flashed my Sapphire 4870 1gb card and haven't been able to get dual monitor support working in Mac OS. Has anyone been able to get this working on a Sapphire 4870?
It works fine in Windows, not sure why it wont work in MacOS as I imagine the 10.5.7 drivers should be doing all the work.

09 Quad Mac Pro, with flashed 1g XFX 4870 ...
all the OpenCL sample apps from Apple, except for the "hello world" example, are failing.
Can anyone else confirm the same errors on their setup? Just so that I know for sure it is due to the 4870.
I will try putting in my GT120 and see what happens.

I've got a 1GB XFX 4870 that I flashed using the info from the exhaustive 4870 flashing thread. It's being used in my Mac Pro with a GT120 and I use 3 monitors.
When using Aperture 3 the 2 displays that are attached to the 4870 exhibit graphical glitches when performing adjustments...
The glitches range from a garbled mess of of the original image, to being able to see the previously viewed image very briefly. After I've performed one adjustment on the image the adjustments work as they should. The display with the GT120 performs fine with fairly smooth performance.
This was not an issue with Aperture 2.
Are there any other users of flashed 4870's and Aperture 3 seeing this issue?
I thought that the card could the card be failing but it still gives stellar performance everywhere else including gaming in Windows 7.

by following the very active community you have set up for the scene of flashing PC cards to work under OS X I myself bought a 4870 XFX ZWFL & ZWFC 1GB and flashed it.This occurred about one month ago, and since then the card has been working flawlessly, so a big thanks for that.
A very nasty problem occurred after the 10.6.3 update tho, as since then I started having horrible fps's in any application that required 3d acceleration (say, World of Warcraft); down from a rock steady 50-60fps (that easily topped the 120 mark) i can barely get a 30fps after the update.
I checked the other topics, and all of them pointed me into downloading the last version of Zeus and update the drivers, wich I did for every time an update (or fix for a fix) as been released, and tried every time to install both before and after the reboot from the 10.6.3 combo update.
I'm using only one monitor, so I did not encounter any problem concerning dvi ports not working or anything.

I'm running a Mac Pro 1,1 with a flashed ATI HD4870 - everything has been fine since getting the card back in March - played HL2 and Torchlight with nice framerates and no problems.
I bought Starcraft 2 today, partly to give the new card a proper workout.
Everything looked great to start with ? smooth graphics, nice lighting effects etc. then I started to get flashing lines and angular artifacts appearing all over the screen.
Now, thing is, this is what happened to my old X1900 XT when playing WoW. At first just slight graphic glitches and flashes but, over time, getting worse more quickly until the game became unplayable within minutes of starting it up. Getting the HD4870 fixed this and I was able to play WoW no problems after that.
I'm just wondering if this means my card is (already) on its way out - deteriorating like the X1900 did - or if it's something else in the computer that might be showing signs of stress?
I haven't seen anything here about the HD4870 failing on Starcraft

I guess curiosity got the best of me and I attempted to re-flash my working Sapphire 4870 with a different bios image provided here, and now when I boot I dont get any video. Just a black screen and no chime.
After this I tried putting in my old 7200gt to try and get it to boot so I could reflash back to the old firmware - but as long as the 4870 is installed I get no video at all. As soon as I take it out everything works fine.
Please advise me on what to do next.

I have a new issue with my Mac Pro (3,1 - 2008), it just popped up (and I don't think it was caused by 10.6.3, I remember this working correctly after it was installed I have two monitors connected via DVI to a flashed XFX 4870. The 4870 has never given me any trouble. In the Energy Saver settings, I usually set the machine to never sleep, and the displays to sleep after 5 minutes. This used to work great, never had any trouble with it, ever. Now, the displays don't go to sleep after 5 minutes, they just stay on with a screensaver.

Apparently, Apple is seeding updated Graphics drivers .
Can any of our GPU gurus hazard a guess at whether these will benefit those of us with flashed cards, or will they more likely brick them, or do we just not know until we test them?
I don't want to get my hopes up for improvements that might never happen!

So I have an Early 2009 Octocore 2.93 and I have a flashed ATI Radeo HD 4870 video card that is supposed to work on a PC but its flashed so it works on a mac. I know its not officially supported but the issue im running into is that the operating system cannot recognize the full resolution the HP LP3065 30 inch display is capable of. The display can run up to 2560x1600 on any other system but not with my ten thousand dollar machine. The windows side can display at the full resolution but Snow Leopard can only run 1280x800 and it makes the OS look like a pile of dog **** on sunday.
Anyone else run into this issue?
Heres the link btw to where this guy shows how to flash the card.

Using the ati flashing tool I flashed the XFX 4870 1GB ZFWC. When I start up a dialog shows up saying the cables are not connected, when in fact they are (I have double and triple checked). Also when I put the computer to sleep then wake it up a weird distorted blocky pattern appears and I have to restart the computer to fix the problem.

Just noticed the Snow Leopard Graphics Update, anyone install it yet/found noticeable improvements (can't install it until I get back home in a week)? Hopefully no problems for people with flashed graphics cards? I would like this update to let me run SC2 in Mac OS X; it's so much faster in Win 7...

I have a Snow Leopard Install Disk for the 13-inch Macbook Pro model.I also have a 21-inch iMac. I have OS X Lion installed on both. I have Snow Leopard installed as a partition on my Macbook Pro, which I installed via the install disk. I want to do the same thing for my iMac but I am unable due to (seemingly) my install disk is for a Macbook Pro and not for an iMac.

Today I performed a clean install of Snow Leopard on my late 2009 Mac Mini. After completing the installation, I began running software update to bring everything up-to-date.While software update did find and install a number of updates (10.6.8v1.1 Combo update, Security Update 2012-002, Apple Software Installer Update, iLife Support 9.0.4, Remote Desktop Client Update 3.5.3, Airport Utility, Java, Safari) it did not find an update for iTunes (which starts at version 9.x, I believe, in a SL clean install).I assumed that this was some sort of random glitch and manually downloaded and installed iTunes 10.6.3.After that, I re-installed iLife '11 (from a retail DVD, not the App Store). When I ran Software Update again, it found updates for Garage Band, iDVD, and iWeb, but it did not show the updates for iPhoto and iMovie.I found this to be unnerving, as I performed a clean install when I first obtained this Mini a few months ago and didn't experience any of these problems - all of my Apple software updated automatically through Software Update without a hitch.
I began researching this problem online and found that other people have been experiencing this same problem (or some variation of it), and it seems like it began appearing around the time Apple updated some of its security certificates in March. In particular, I've found several references to the missing iPhoto update. This one is especially noticeable because an iPhoto library created in iPhoto 9.2.3 will not open in iPhoto 9.0, and this generates an error upon opening the program (i.e., a user backs up their iPhoto library created in 9.2.3, performs a SL clean install, reinstalls iLife, goes through the Software Update process until it shows that no more updates are available, and are shocked to find that they are unable to open their backed up iPhoto library because they have an out of date version of iPhoto). The most common (and admittedly logical) solution proposed in the threads I've read is to download any necessary updates directly from the Apple website. However, I am curious as to why this previously functional feature now appears to be broken.Has anyone else been struggling with this? Does it indeed have something to do with the new security certificates? Is Apple aware of the problem?

This is the first time i reinstalled(clean install) my snow leopard on my MBP. All went fine but then i inserted the disc for bundled application (which contains the ilife apps) but it keeps failing.Â
It says that "the installation failed. the installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. contact the software manufacturer for assistance".Â
I've also done my research on this matter. I've gone thru a few steps i tried as below without success:Â
1)normal install - fail
2)repair permission - fail
3)install in safe mode - fail
4) install using another admin acc - fail
5) made an image out of the disc and install - fail
6) used a similar disc(my dad's since we have identical version) - fai
7)updated my system and install - fail
8) reinstall the mac - failÂ
i cant think of any other solution as im a bit noob when it comes to mac. is there any other things i could try before taking it Apple?

I'm currently using a MBP 13 inch and am running Leopard on it.
I just bought a copy of snow leopard today but i don't know if I should do a direct upgrade from leopard to snow leopard, or wipe my MBP and do a fresh install so i have snow leopard on a clean slate.
Have any of you tried the second option before? Or do any of you have advice on which path I should take?

The internal hard drive on my early 2009 iMac is being replaced but I have to reinstall Snow Leopard myself.I did search in MRoogle and at Apple and cannot seem to find instructions on how to perform a clean Snow Leopard install on an iMac internal HD.
Can I do this? And if so how? Or do you think I should try and install Leopard on the existing Hd in the iMac? I still have these discs but have to get the SL applications install disc out of my drive (it's stuck and the iMac won't boot past the blue screen).

I jsut did a fresh install. wanted to use my SL DVD but the MBP i5 refused to star with it so I used the original DVD (10.5) and upgraded with the SL DVD to 10.6. However after the initial SL Installation, it tried from the SL DVD and this failed. I did a manual restart, starting from the HD and everything ran fine. however today I note there is a locked file on the HD named Mac OS X Install Data. It contains 181 .pkg files. Now I suppose this should have been moved or deleted as part of the install process. Can I move them to a file where they belong?Â

Did a search through here but couldn't find anything concrete. What are the differences between a fresh Snow Leopard install and a factory Snow Leopard install? I ask because I bought an Intel SSD and don't know if I should bother cloning the hard drive that will come with my new 15" MBP or I should just install a fresh copy from a Snow Leopard install disc. I'm aware macs come with next to no junk pre-installed, but are there some factory settings that are worth preserving if they aren't documented well?
