I am running a Mac Pro 2,1 and just had my x1900XT die. I know the 4870 isn't officially supported but was told on many a forum that it would indeed run. So I purchased a new Mac HD 4870 card and put it in yesterday. Seems to work fine and the user interface is snappy. However when I run Xbench and just the Graphics benchmarks I can see that I am actually scoring on average 30 points slower than when I was running the X1900! What is going on here? Is the card not being fully utilized due to it not being fully supported on my Mac Pro 2,1? Is it under powered? I plugged in the provided 2 power cables directly to the 2 connectors on the board. However in Cinebench 11.5.29 I scored a 24.96 which is something I couldnt run with my X1900 XT. Anybody have any answers? Extremely frustrating to upgrade to downgrade. Thinking about returning it and buying the officially supported HD3780. I work in Pro Apps all day long and need a good performer.

The card is in an 8 core mac pro and is running a 30" ACD.It started a while a go before installed Snow Leopard but happened very infrequently
Have installed snow leopard and added two new dvd drives and I now have these blackout nearly everyday.
Have found info on ATI's website about the Radion HD 4870 suggesting the LCDs indicate a faulty power supply or even disconnected power leadsthe same thread also mentioned overheating could be the cause a of the red light.
anyone know what the Red diagnostic lcds on Mac ATI Radeon X1900XT mean.
Extra info: The two DVDs I have added I had to replace the data cable as I damaged the original
to do this meant a total strip down, while I was there I added two sata data cable threading them through connecting to a new sata drive and leaving one spare for the future.
The DVDs work perfectly, could adding the sata cables have an effect on the power supply.
Having to remove the ATI Radeon X1900XT, I am sure the cables are seated correctly, should it matter which cable is connected to each connector on the motherboard.
There is a thread on apple website about this black screen, all describing similar problems but relating this to Snow Leopard and some sort of video bug.
No answers on that site and no one else seem to have the Red diagnostic lcd
I have been having some problems with my MacBook Pro going slower and slower and then eventually grinds to a halt. I'm not sure what is causing it....Is there a log that will show me any memory leaks or at least what was using up the most memory/CPU at the time it freezes? a lot of times it freezes awhile after the screensaver kicks in.
Ordered from eBay Graphics Card Upgare (Ati Radeon x1900xt / Part# 102A5202752 000006) for my new Mac Pro (early 2008). It came in white box with Apple logos. Attached and powered it but I get only "No Signal" on my monitors (LCD: Eizo FlexScan S2401W and Samsung SyncMaster 225BW). Tried different cables: DVI-D Single-link, DVI-D dual, DVI-I Dual and VGA+Apple DVI-adaptor - no effect.
It seems like the new card isn't recognized properly?
Im just a few days away from ordering my much anticipated MacPro. I will use it mainly for webdesign, including Photoshop, Coda, VirtualMachines, Illustrator, etc. While im still waiting for the confirmation of the possibility for more than 8Gb ram with bigger dimms, my dought for now is, should i upgrade the memory from 3gb or its a better choice go for the ATI Radeon HD 4870 now and pick the ram later? Just to add, most likely i'll go for the Quad core.
I will buy an HD4870 soon, but it's consuming so much power on idle. Is there any software to underclock it's clocks when it's not used? On Windows no problem, but what about Mac OS X?
I have a 2008 MP 8 core and I want to get a new video card, I have a 8800 in it now, and I need a more powerful card for Win 7 for Flight Simulator. I have 12 GB of ram in the system and I am going to add a 256 SSD for Win 7 and use a WD raptor drive for the Flight Sim. Which is the BETTER video card for the windows side ( dont care about it in OSX ) The GtX285 has 1 GB ram on board and the ATI only has 512mb.. ( like the 8800 ) I dont want to get the GTX 400 series and make it work I rather go with the 4870 or GTX285.
Which cooler do you recommend for the HD 4870? I just got my Mac Pro and while it's not dreadfully noisy, I can hear the gpu fan, it hums a bit. I've seen the Thermalright T-Rad2 VGA Coolers - but are they any good for the Ati cards that ship from Apple?
I'm about to buy a macpro with an ATI HD4870, but i'd like to know if i'll be able to plug an Apple cinema display LED on the mini display port and a dell 22" on the DVI port? will there be any problems?
I got an MP09 with Apple HD 4870 512MB graphics card some time ago and while I enjoy working with Mac OS, I also enjoy playing games. At the Mac OS side I don�t really play games or do much heavy 3D stuff but on the Windows side then I play. I noticed that the graphics card kinda get�s hot, not in amounts to worry but still. Catalyst Control Center states the following: 79�C while at 70% load with fan at 20% windows 7 x64, Catalyst 9.12 I would like to tune the fan to 33%. Is there a way to do this? I enabled Overdrive and checked manual fan speed, which doesn�t work (known bug). Then I edited an profile and loaded it, still not at 33% fan speed. I also tried Speedfan to tune the PCI fan of the MP but it doesn�t show me the fans of the MP.
I was trying to flash my video card but when i tried re-booting all my MacPro does is that it keeps chiming every few seconds and won't bootup.

Option - command - P - R Boot it with my uncle's PC running on Win 7, My card doesn't even showed up with I use GPUZ or Atiflash. create a partition using FAT and used Freedos to bootup, tried Atiflash, it still doesn't show up when i use the -i option bootup using bootcamp Win7 on my MAC, it showed unknown device yesterday, I finally managed to get GPUZ to show HD4870 but, its not detectable by winflash and when I rebooted it, the same chiming starts again.
i want to install a hd4870 card for windows only gaming. from the research that i have done it looks like i can do it, but the one thing that has me second guessing the whole thing is the two 75W 6-pin PCI Express connectors that are needed. i'm a bit of a noob in this area and i'm not sure what those are, if i have them, or if they are connectors that i need. i've searched the forums and haven't found the answers that i need, so if you can help me out, hold my hand if you will, my hd2600 kinda blows.my rig is a 2008 macPro 2.8ghz with 6g ram
i ordered an 4870 card for my mac pro about the time it got out, march 3rd. Shipping date was set to april 21st. on that date it jumped to may 19th. anyone got their cards, or got an earlier shipping date? i live in norway btw. maybe that has something to do with it.
after a lot of testing we have managed to clear everything around the topic of flashing stock PC X1900XT/512Mb (256Mb is NOT working!!) with MacPro EFI ROM. Thank you all guys at Strangedogs! It WORKS prefectlly! Ofcourse flashing card with MacPro EFI rom reenders card useless in regular PC, you have to flash it back with original bios to make it work in PC again. His is a 2010 15" i7 with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB Apple SSD. Mine is a 2009 15" 2.66GHz C2D with 8GB of RAM and a 320GB 5400rpm HDD. His results when we run JUST the XBench for memory was almost twice what mine was! Same bus speed and everything... Why would this be? Does the processor or SDD/HDD
I make good use of dashboard. I use the calculator and unit conversion tools every day. I also have the TV program and my internet usage tracker displayed always. These are the only four widgets I have on my dashboard 90% of the time. Over the past year I've noticed the dash becoming slower and slower. Earlier this year I upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger hoping this might help (and help boost the computer in general) and while I have seen many improvements, dashboard keeps feeling slower and slower.
E.g. I want to do a simple sum in the calculator. I use a hot corner to activate the dashboard and the calculator is unresponsive for 5-20 seconds, same goes for the unit conversion widget. When I do this many times a day I find it frustrating and that it slows my workflow down. I've taken to my handheld calculator again but would prefer to use dashboard for ease of use. I'm running a MBP 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB memory and Mac OS X 10.6.4 if that helps.
I'm in the market for a new MBP and, looking through the models, it's between the: 13" 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo with 8gb of RAM 13" 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4gb of RAM I'll be using it for: Adobe apps (Flash, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, InDesign; often 2 of these at a time), videos (esp. streamed online), word processing, and general web browsing. I often have at least 1 of the mentioned Adobe applications, as well as a streaming video and 5-10 browser tabs open at once. So, which is better for my purposes, the 4gb more RAM but slower processor, or the faster processor with 4gb less RAM?
anyone noticed after the 10.5.7 update you run slower. my keyboard is taking time to catch up with my typing now and i have to wait a noticeable amount of time longer to load webpages. i have a Intel iMac, which has not been affected as badly, but my MacBook is really bad since the update?
I have scanned for viruses and used onyx to see if that solved it. but not luck.

I have always used firefox. But lately when trying to access web sites it seems to take so much longer. I can open the same website in safari and it is so much faster. I know it has nothing with my internet speed because my download speed is around 16 down and 1 up. I also don't believe it is the DNS because safari can load it much faster. Try different news sites such as CNN.com or foxnews.com . Both seem to take a lot longer in firefox. Not sure if it has to do with all the adds that are in these pages. I should mention I am running a late 2008 iMac with 4gb of ram
Well, my Macbook [white 2,1] has been running at a normal speed and all, but up until a few days ago, my internet has been noticeably slower. I view a lot of pictures and manga/comics online, so when i click to go to the next it loads very slowly, Youtube videos take a long time to load, and buffer every few seconds.
Normally, they would go smoothly and fast, I'm wirelessly connected to my router which hasn't changed and I've been in the same area of my house too. The desktop and other laptop that my family members use don't have this problem either. My family uses a Telus cnnection.
I've already cleared cookies and cache, I went into the Cookies folder from spotlight and deleted all inside it and emptied trashbin.
After reformatting my macbook, it seems to be running considerably slower than the "out of box" condition. For example, before reformatting restarting the system was quick. Now, when i want to restart, i have to wait 30 seconds before it restarts.
like many of you i have bought snow leopard. also i went to memory express and got a set of 2GB ram sticks for my macbook pro. so after putting in the 4GB of ram everything feels good... except for when i come to shutdown.
before, it used to shut down almost instantaneously but now that i have added ram it takes much longer. infact the apple loading circle comes up near the lower part of the screen!
is there something i have to do or should i return the ram and stick with the stock 2GB
My new macbook pro i7 comes with Lion. I noticed it is slower than Snow Leopard (iMac) at my office. When I opened that same file that I worked on iMac which perfectly fine, sometimes crashed or loading very slow on Lion (mostly graphic files like PS or AI) I checked the Disk Utility n it said everything was fine. Or it supposed to b that way?
It seems like my MacBook Pro starts up pretty slow, about 20 to 30 seconds. I don't think this was the case before, I have the HD almost full but it has been like this for a while and just a few weeks back started to do this slow start behavior.

I back up the iMac to a three year old OWC 500GB external HD with ultra ATA drive. I was backing up the MBP to a similar device. Both machines connected via USB 2 cable. I use CCC to perform backups.Â
I recently got a new WD My Book 2TB external device that is USB 3. I use it to backup the newer MBP. I have noticed that the backup takes longer with the new drive. I didn't expect the new drive to take longer. Is there some overhead when using a USB 3 device to a USB 2 machine that causes backups to take longer than with a USB 2 Ext. HD?Â
I recently upgraded the RAM and Hard Drive in my Macbook Pro 2012. I know that the first time it boots up it is suppose to boot up slower, but what about the times after. I upgraded the RAM to Corsair 8gb 1333 MHz DDR3 and the Hard Drive to the Seagate Momentus XT 500gb.
Everything on my mac is running slower and slower, I have the last ver. of the eMac, and still running the 256 Ram, and 12 GB of storage with an external of 250 GB. I dont know why, if you need a list of apps or anything just ask. I also dont have the 100 I need right now to upgrade the ram. Plus if anyone could tell me if and how I can use my external as my main drive, but it is a usb, that sometimes hikups being on my mac for access, it will access it sometimes 5 min after I boot, so I may not want to, or is it a glitch of my mac.
