Intel Mac :: Where Are Files Taking Up Storage

Apr 9, 2012

I just transferred my iTunes library from my iMac to a LaCie D2 Quadra external HDD. I followed the instructions on how to transfer the library and then delete the files from my iMac. I have approximately 400 GB of Music/Movies. The transfer worked seamlessly and everything is showing up in iTunes.

I then went into "about this Mac", more options, and then selected storage to see the allocation of my hard drive. It has freed up the majority of the 500GB HDD on my iMac, however it still shows some files. The largest allocation it still has is under Movies, according to the color coding at the bottom. It still show 40GB allocated here. I looked through all of my documents and folders in Finder and cannot find what files are still taking up this space.

how to locate what files these are? I moved everything to an external HDD to free up the space on my iMac. I understand 40GB is not that much out of 500GB but still would prefer not to be wasting space.

MacBook :: OS X Mavericks (10.9.4) Apps Taking Up Storage

Aug 26, 2014

I just recently bought my mac about two weeks ago and it came with 120 gb of memory, but I just checked today and it says I only have 96gb left, I haven't downloaded hardly any apps or transferred my music. How can I find out what is taking so much of my memory?

MacBook Air :: Storage Reporting Photos Are Taking Up Excessive Space

Aug 24, 2014

I can't seem to find out why my Mac is reporting such excessive storage use for "Photos". My iPhoto library says it's only about 1.47GB. Earlier today, I unchecked the option of importing photos from other locations to the iPhoto library, since we have an external hard drive that we use to store photos.

Why it's reporting such high usage? In the screenshot is OmniDiskSweeper, which shows sizes of each folder. They definitely aren't adding up to the 92GB that it says is in use, unless all that extra data is coming from some folder I don't have permission to.

MacBook Pro :: "Other" Category In Storage Taking Up Too Much Space

Jun 20, 2012

My Macbook Pro says that it has 300 GB taking up space in the 'other' category of the storage of my MACINTOSH HD. What can possibly take up 300 gb?? Is there a way that I can view the individual items that are taking up space in this 'other' category, or is there a way that I can erase them? My Macbook is always warning me that my "startup disk is almost full", because I do not have any remaining memory with 'other' taking up almost all of it. For this reason, my Macbook is running very slow at times, and is having many errors.

OS X :: How To Find What Files Taking Most Of Space On MacBook

Jun 28, 2009

I've only had my macbook for about 3 weeks, and already it's saying I've reached like 110GB. That can't be right though, cause I've only used like 50GB worth of space. I've searched and searched through my Hard Drive to see what's taking the space. But can't find anything. Is there like a program I can download to see all the large files on my Macbook?

OS X :: Zip Files Taking Long To Download On MacBook Pro

Feb 2, 2010

I'm at a university and I've had a MacBook Pro for about a year now. The OS is Mac OS X 10.5.8. The processor is 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. The Memory is 4 GB DDR2. When I'm at the University we use a secure wireless network. When I option click on the AirPort icon, I get the following readings:

0:26:cb:82:8d:80
Channel: 11
RSSI: -68
Transmit Rate: 130

Because it's a university-wide system, I have no idea what the router information is. When I asked our IT staff about it - a group of part-time college students - they just shrug and tell me everything is working. I can download movie files in an instant. Zip files, even the most basic ones, take about half an hour. This is true even when the movie and the zip file is on the same website. A movie file, six or eight times the size of the zip, downloads much faster. I've read through this forum and others. I followed this suggestion: I deleted my AirPort setting and reinstalled it under "wireless". This did not seem to change anything.

MacBook :: Deleted Files Still Taking Space?

Jun 23, 2014

I had a folder with about 11.5 gb worth of files in it. I copied this file to an external hard drive, and deleted the copy on my desktop.

I emptied the recycle bin and could see no trace of this file, yet the space is still being taken on my hard drive (only 2 gb available).

How can I delete the stupid file so that my space is back?? I have already disabled time machine, as this was the only solution I could find. I have restarted my rMBP multiple times, and even started in safe mode to see if the files would appear there for emptying in the trash bin. Nothing was there in the trash bin. I have run out of solutions. I have Cleanmymac2 and have run the automated system cleaner with the external attached and without it attached. (This external BTW is NOT the one that I do backups with time machine to). I have also verified my mac partition as well as the internal hard drive with disk utility and show no errors.

I know this has nothing to do with time machine, as I moved the folder to my hard drive this morning, watched it take 11.5 gb of space, then moved it, and saw the space remained the same.

OS X :: Copying Files Taking Long Time While Using Internet?

Mar 21, 2010

After reformatting I got to the setup screen after the cool intro. I noticed several problems.

When on the screen asking about transferring files from another computer I chose no since I have none to transfer. But after choosing my option and trying to move forward it sat on that screen for a while until it finally moved forward. It didn't do this before.

On the screen where you'd set up your internet connection and it lists available wireless networks it was slow on there too. It took me a while to move forward after choosing a different option. It took a while to recognize that I had hit a different option. Again, it didn't do this before.

Under the internet sharing option it listed an option called bluetooth DUN. This option wasn't there before. If I recall it only used to list ethernate and airport under these options, but bluetooth DUN was the first option listed. I reformatted again because this seemed too strange, but even though ethernate was listed first bluetooth DUN was still is this listing.

On the second reformat I got a message when turning airport off. I was dumb and didn't write the message down, but I believe it said something about airport power. Again, I didn't get this message before. Not when I first set up my Mac and not on the first reformat.

None of this has happened before. It bothers me. What's wrong?

I have a Macbook Air with 128 GB, and half of that was used up. I got Steam and a game that was about 1,300 bytes. After I deleted the game file through steam, my storage went down... I decided to delete Steam, and it went down more... I currently have 16 GB left. Whenever I delete things, my storage left goes down more, or seems to.

I have a 250 Gb internal Hard drive.  I started running out of space so I purchased a 750 Gb external Hard Drive and moved all my picutres, videos, etc. I freed up about 35Gb of space on my internal hard drive.  I also cleared out my download folder.  I hardly have any files left on the computer and after a few weeks I get the hard disk running low on free space error again. I checked the available space and I have less than a Gig.  I don't know what is taking up the space.  I have Time Capsule and am using Time Machine.  I am running Lion.

MacBook Air :: Realization - IPhone Storage Versus MBA Storage?

Jan 10, 2010

I thought I would share a cool realization. I am now eligible for any iPhone upgrades and most likely will be getting the new one coming out this summer - whatever it may be. I realized today that most likely it will have 64GB of storage - the exact same size as my Macbook Air - I think it is so wild my future phone/pocket computer will have the exact same storage capacity as my main laptop. I could potentially mirror everything on my Mac that is on my iPhone in the future.

Intel Mac :: Running Out Of Storage

Jun 4, 2012

I have a 21.5 iMac with an i3 processor and 500GB hard drive. Unfortunately I am running out of internal storage space and I was wondering what options I have for upgrading the storage. I am also going through my photos (in iPhoto) and videos (in iMovies), deleting the ones I don't need. I also have a 500GB external hard drive with the purpose of backing up my iMac (via Time Machine). I can think of the following options and I was wondering what people think about them and if you could share any feedback / ideas? Internal Upgrade: Can I upgrade my storage internally on my iMac to another 500GB (i.e. 1TB in total)?External Upgrade Scenario 1: Purchase a 500GB external drive and save my iMovie and iPhoto library on it. Purchase another 500GB external hard drive as back up (via Time Machine) Question -> Can I run 2 back ups at the same time via Time Machine? One for my existing internal storage and another for iMovie and iPhoto library on the external 500GB hard drive.External Upgrade Scenario 2: Use my existing 500GB external hard drive (which I currently use to back up my iMac) and reformat it to save my iPhoto and iMovie library. Purchase a 1TB external hard drive to back up both my internal storage (500GB) and external storage (500GB). Is this even possible with Time Machine?
