Intel Mac :: Crackling When Recording Or Playing Audio
Mar 14, 2012
I'm having a very annoying problem, and I simply can't figure it out. Recently I updated my OS from Leopard to Snow Leopard, because I had some problems with the firewire connection to my fireface 400 sound card. So far this seems to have solved the problem, and for a couple of weeks I was actually able to get some work done. Now a new problem has occured:Â
When I input audio (i.e. trying to record something) I get some really weird crackling noises. It's very different how loud they are. Mostly they are at the same volume as the instrument I'm recording, and normally it sounds very digital. I've tried hooking a presonus firebox up to my mac, which gave me the exact same problems, so it can't be the fireface that's the problem. The problem is not something that occurs, when recording, but simply when sending audio into the mac. There are absolutely no problems when playing back files from iTunes and Logic. Â
I've tried repairing disk permissions, and ran all the tests in techtool pro, which all turned out fine, so I'm having a hard time believing that it's a hardware issue even though I've had problems with the firewire connection earlier. Â
Though it does not sound like clipping, the problem seems to occur more rarely, when playing soft, which just makes it even more weird.Â

Everything is up to date, it just seems like something has been messed up somewhere inside the mac. Next step is to wipe the hard disc, but I'd rather not do that.

Apart from soundflower, which no longer works, is there any way to mute the audio stream while it is still being recorded with, for example. audacity?

My brand new 2.8 8-core mac pro arrived a couple of days ago, and needless to say its great..for the most part It's standard spec but with the 8800GT and the airport card.Although I use it with OSX for most things, I need to be running Vista for the odd bit of gaming, and more importantly for software development (still need Visual Studio and .NET)So i've installed Vista x64, installed the bootcamp drivers, and then updated the graphics to the latest Nvidia drivers

I just bought a new MBP and install Vista on it. It's horrible, the trackpad is simply not usable, this problem can be solved by using wireless mouse. The audio pops noise every 30 secs, turning wireless off or use Vista Anti Lag will solve it. Now the most annoying part, the computer hard freezes about twice day, this is unacceptable, I have not seen a computer hard freeze for many years. I meant blue screen of death is kinda okay, but my computer just freeze Ctrl Alt Fn Del won't work, tried re installing, no luck. Anyone had their computer crash with the new MBP?

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Mac Mini and make the switch to OSX. However, there is a TV subscription that I use that plays the channels through windows media player. I tried watching them on my sister's Macbook but it didn't work - Quicktime replaced the WMP box and said that there was an unknown source or something.

Trying to figure out if something is up with mine and a buddies machine specifically or they are all buggered....
Please post if you have an audio pop or click type sound that is intermittent (every few minutes or couple hours) on your i5 or i7 machine while playing audio through external speakers.
If you have it, please describe your situation as it occurs so we can perhaps isolate it:
I.e. Plugged in / on battery, programs running, usb plugged in, etc.
Mine happens whether on battery or not, iTunes, games, movies, Locked in video card...

I tried to record some audio (voice) with garageband earlier this day and it didn't work! I have a built in microphone that is working fine, it tested it (mac OS X, version 10.5.8) and my input volume level is turned up (system preferences). I tried to record with isight (imovie) and can record a video, but no sound eighter. I've been able to record in the past with garageband so i haven't a single clue what happened.

I am running leopard on an iMac 24" and am having trouble getting my iSight camera to record audio on 2 channels. I have changed my audio input to line in (inbuilt input) in order to record using a better microphone than the inbuilt one in my iMac, and am running a Shure microphone into the input in the back of my iMac via XLR to 1/4" stereo jack cable and then through a 1/4" to 1/8" stereo jack adapter. However when recording video in Photo Booth, iMovie etc. the audio only plays back out of the left speaker. It is not a problem with the output because all of my other sounds (music from itunes for example) play fine out of both left and right speakers. I believe I have run everything into the computer just fine and I can get 2 channels when recording like this in Garageband and Logic.

My macbook pro runs louder than my now dead powerbook G4 used to. I'm wondering if there is a way to make the hum softer when I'm doing audio recording? I know it's bad to put something cushy underneath since it will heat up the machine, but I've experimented with that kind of thing, and it does lessen the hum. Are there different feet I can attach? I've searched the forums and I'm surprised other people haven't written about this.

Do you know of any simple audio recording app (ie: not a monster audio suite) which takes low CPU usage, and lets you choose the internal bit depth using for audio sampling (ie: sample at PCM16, at PCM24,...) ? Â
Now, in case you need it, the long version of the question:Â
I'm digitizing my huge collection of audio tapes, with my G5 iMac (OSX 10.4). The quality of the recordings is somewhat low, so I don't need a high-end audio card, and I believe the builtin audio card of this G5 is more than adequate for this task (Burr Brown PCM3052 with support for PCM16, PCM24, and AC3 16).Â
I've done my first tests with the just-released new version of Audacity (2.0.0), which is compatible with 10.4 and higher, so I'm very happy to be able to install a brand-new application in 10.4.Â
Audacity works fine, but has a couple of issues:Â
First, you can choose the audio track bit depth, but not the internal bit depth at which you're sampling. In other words, I'd expect to use some selector to choose from PCM16 or PCM24 recording, which is what this iMac seems to support. However, I can only choose the storage bit depth, not the sampling bit depth. I suppose Audacity is recording at PCM24, but I've no way to test this.Â
Second, it takes about 40% CPU usage while recording (yes, I disabled the realtime graphics update of Audacity... if I don't disable it, usage becomes 60% or higher).Â
I tried Audio Hijack Pro (well, the last version supporting 10.4), and it won't let me choose the sampling depth either.Â

I am using QuickTime to record audios of myself talking in a quiet room, using the built-in microphone, but I just found that the audio quality is poor, even less than the voice memos I recorded on my iPod touch 4 (I said the same thing in the same room). Although I can hear my every words, I think it is near the sound quality of talking on telephone; the voice is not clear and pure.
I have the model of early 2011 MacBook Pro, with the newest OS X Mountain Lion.

Is there any software out there that's cheap (or free) for Mac that allows you to record a video/audio session of your desktop? I'm talking about software similar to what Adobe Captivate and Camtasia do.

How can I disable this?
I want it to only record an application, say Skype or Firefox. But, yet it uses the mic on my MB and I can hear myself talking as well as my keyboard.

I want to record a Quicktime movie using iSight as the video input, external audio (guitar) via a Focusrite Saffire LE (1874) audio interface and internal audio (a backing track) from either iTunes, Logic 9 or MainStage 2 (I don't care which), so I can record myself playing and then send the video to another guitarist via Dropbox or similar.

2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Snow Leopard 10.6.8
The following apps: protools 8.0.5, Guitar Rig 3, or Reason 4 freeze on startup. They all hang up and I get error messages regarding midi. I've tried deleting prefs, throwing midi drivers in the trash, etc. nothing works. This happened after I installed an update for Guitar Rig 3. Now everything's broke.

I received an e-mail with an audio recording from my yoga teacher. On my PC I was able to click on the "address" and download it directly to my docs.
But I'd like to have it on my Mac Air notebook so I can have it with me when I travel.Â
However, when I click on the "address" to download it takes me to a dropbox sign-up page. I'd rather not sign up with dropbox.

I use my quicktime and built-in isight on my macbook to make video chats and email them to my relatives. The audio in my recording hace a "cricket like sound" in the backround. This does not appear when I just do an audio recording. Only when I do a video recording. I use the built in microphone. I've adjusted the microphone settings in the system preferences still with the same result.

When accessing the website; 'WhatUsersDo', which is used for testing websites, you are required to provide an audio recording of your thoughts about the website which you are testing, However, I am unable to submit an application to become one of the testers, as it is saying that I need to enable a microphone before I can continue with my application (as you are required to take a practice test during the application). Â
I have looked through other forums, and my microphone is working fine.

My MBP (2007 intel) freezes or spontaneously shuts down and crackling comes from the speakers. Sometimes this happens together all at once? It happens with and without peripherals. It does not seem to be linked to a specific program or peripheral use.Â

I was putting together a music video out of boredom, and getting used to using iMovie 09, but a lot of clips near the end will not stop playing snippets of sound here and there. Sometimes a bunch of the play at the same time over one clip. This happens even when I turn the volume of the song to 0% just to see if the random sounds would play without it over them, and they do.
So I deleted the audio from each clip by detaching them and then deleting, but they still played. Then I tried just setting the audio to 0% and even reset ducking on the Song playing over them to 0%. None of this worked. Mind you, this only happens when it is played in fullscreen mode. If I just press space bar and play it as is, it works fine. Can anyone explain what is going on?

Setup : Itunes 9.0.2 on a Macbook 5,2 running OSX.5.8. Audio Files on NAS (brought there using "consolidate library" in itunes), libraries still on main drive. I created a NAS account with the same ID as my admin one, and connect to it with a script executed on startup. I can do exactly the same things as when audio files were on my drive. The only problem is lag, when I play next track, edit metadata,...I checked wifi, ethernet, different cables,... didn't change a thing. Moreover, I can browse through all my tracks with VLC without lag. Last evening I ran idefrag for a totally different purpose and found 'itunes music library.xml" was fragmented (≈20 MB in 7 parts), "Itunes Library" too.
Here's the thing :When I defragment these two files at startup, and then launch iTunes, the lag issue disappears. When I quit iTunes, the library files are saved but written in parts again, and the lag comes back. Finally, if I defragment the files between a quit and a start, they must be edited again because they're split up again and the lag is still there.Since I didn't add new songs, itunes must be saving stuff like playing counts, which is useless to me. Make the library read-only?Â

I have an iMac - running Snow Leopard:
10.6.2
2.4gh intel core 2 duo
1gb 677 mhz ddr2 sdram
256gb free disk space
Randomly throughout the day, an audio file will start to play and will repeat until I shut the machine down.
The file starts by saying: Mikano (best guess), two seconds later I hear a gong followed by some Asian music.
The file is not in my iTunes.
I may or may not have iTunes open (and if open, the file continues to play when I close iTunes).
I may or may not have Safari open (and if open, the file continues to play when I close Safari).
I will close all applications and the music continues to play.

I never had any replies to my initial post and I'm still having the same issues with my Macbook Pro, iTunes and my iPhone. After sync, I'm seeing on some albums the album artwork and full track listings but the audio won't play on my iPhone. However, the same tracks play fine using iTunes on the MBP. Anyone come across this before and/or have any ideas how to solve the problem?
