IMac Intel :: Moving Data From One External Hard Drive To Another ERROR-36

i got a new hp simplesave external hard drive, and i'm moving all my files from an older external hard drive (can't find brand name). Some of the files are bringing up error 36 which is something along the lines of can't read/write file. which is causing the file transfer to stop on that one file. there are a lot of damaged files so the file transferring is going very slowly. is there a way i can find out which files are bad ahead of time so i can get rid of them AND THEN transfer the files?

IMac Intel :: Moving Music And Photos From External Drive?
Bought a new 27inch iMac for Xmas this week. Today my G5 imac wouldn't boot and has a video RAM error code 2NYD/1/4:2103 and I can't boot in safe mode or from and external drive with carbon copy cloner backup. I am resigned to the G5 being toast. This of course removes transferring files using Migration Assistant. My question is can I bring all my iphoto pictures and itunes songs/ library to the new iMac from the external drive and what is the best way to do this ?? Will there be issues with the backup being 10.5 and the new iMac being Snow Leopard ?

Should I go with a RAID, will it work with IMAC? I did tons of research and found nothing but conflicting info about each brand. My eyes are bleeding now.

IMac Intel :: Is Hard Drive Dead (zeroing Out Data)
I tried installing Snow Leopard to no avail (it was progressing, but it was at ~70 percent or so after like 8 hours, so obviously something is wrong). So I put the SL disk back in and decided to format the drive and zero out the data. It's saying "Writing zeros to disk. Estimated time: 4 days, 16 hrs" This is an extremely long time for a 160GB hard drive! I don't hear the hard drive seeking or writing or anything. The progress bar doesn't seem to be moving (although I wouldn't expect to see progress on a 4 day estimated time). Does anyone know how to fix this, or am I going to have to end up taking this iMac in to get it's drive replaced?

IMac Intel :: Retrieving Data From Crashed Hard Drive?
Not sure if I'm on the correct forum. This is a first for me! I excitedly bought an iMac 8 months ago, after years using a Windows based system. I regularly back up my PC, although it has never crashed... Finally succumbing to the hype of Mac, i decided to change, primarily for the iPhoto, and now I am without a computer, 20000 images, and months of work invested, after my Mac started flashing with a question mark in a folder, and crashed. Stupidly I never thought my Mac would crash! And regretably, i hadn't backed up, so a lesson learnt I know.

I am now being told that the technical centre cannot retrieve any data, and that the hard drive is dead. In order to replace it under the warranty, they have to return the old drive back to the factory, so I am stuck, in that I cannot give it to anyone else to try and retrieve data as my warranty then falls away? A catch 22! I have been told by a number of colleagues that it is impossible that data cannot be retrieved? I am not technical in this regard, so please I am needing some advice? Is it possible that a hard drive can be so 'dead' after only 8 months? And is it possible that I wont retrieve my photos?

IMac Intel :: Reinstall OS X With User Data On External Drive?
I need to replace my iMac's internal hard drive (Genius bar under warrenty) but before I take it in I had a question for the community. The internal hard drive currently only contains the OS 10.6.2 (upgraded from 10.5), the Administrator account and I guess applications I have installed (I assume). The other user accounts are all on a external firewire RAID 1 drive. When I look at the advanced options they are list as on /Volumes/External/Users/username.

1. Can I use the Snow Leopard upgrade disks when I reinstall the OS or do I need to use my original disk and then run the upgrade disk?

2. After the OS X reinstall, can I just recreate my user accounts and then change them to look where they are/were located at /Volumes/External/Users/username

3. Is my best bet just to back up my internal drive to a different external drive and after the internal drive is replaced do a restore?

I am confident since all our app settings, e-mail, photos, video, music, files are on the external raid drive I will have them but I want to make sure what I do does not cause any access permissions down the road.

IMac Intel :: Can Data (user Account) Be Migrated By A Hard Drive Alone
Probably a dumb question, but I thought I'd ask it anyway.

My dilemma:

My 20" G5 iMac is experiencing very bad screen issues: the dancing lines, after images, video artifacts etc.
I really like the machine, but no way I'll be able to afford $800 to replace the logic board(again). At the present moment I'm really low on funds, so my in-laws gave me their iMac Intel Core 2 Duo(They gave it to me, but I'd like to return it in a couple of months when hopefully I'll be able to afford a new or refurbished one). So actually there are a few questions here:

1- Can I migrate the data using only the hard drive pulled(and placed in a proper enclosure) from my G5?

2- If not, would it be too risky to turn the G5 on "one last time" and attempt to migrate the data that way?

3- Since I'd like to give the computer back in a couple of months, I don't want to erase my in-law's present user account/data. If I can successfully migrate my stuff to their computer-do I have to make a new user account? If so, will I have to reinstall all my programs or do they just "transfer over" as they were set up on the G5(preferences intact, etc)?

I know these are probably really stupid questions, a long time ago I migrated data from my G3 to a G4 and I had some issues, which I've long since forgotten. So I figured I should ask the people who know best before experimenting on my own.

IMac Intel :: Writing Huge Amounts Of Data To Hard Drive For No Reason?
I have a new i7 iMac and it's been fine for the 2+ months I've owned it but recently it's been acting funny. Today I had to force shut it down and when I got it up and running again I noticed the hard drive was working constantly and I my hard drive space gradually dwindling in the Finder going from 712gb free to 702gb free. I thought maybe it was a memory swap issue so I rebooted it hoping it would clear but it hasn't and so I have this random 10gb of data that has been written to the drive. I have noticed in the past that I will lose 2gb of data here and there but I've never been absolutely certain. This time I saw it happen right in front of my eyes.

IMac Intel :: External Disc Drive (not Hard Drive) Compatible With 27"?
I have a few hundred mini CD-R discs that have pictures on them shot with a Sony CD350. The camera died. I have been transferring the pictures from a Dell computer to a Compact Flash card, then from Flash card to iPhoto '09 on the iMac. This takes a lot of time but does work.

Question: Is there an external disk drive out there that will work with the iMac?

One more thing, I really don't want to put a windows os on my iMac. (Trying to break completely free of Windows if at all possible.) All the disk drives I'm finding say they require Windows of some sort.

IMac Intel :: Unable To Boot System / Fatal Hard Drive Error
My worst nightmare has come true. My iMac froze last week and would not boot up upon restart. After repeated diagnostic tests and during a call to AppleCare to try and resolve the issue, I got the heart-stopping message "Fatal Hard Drive Error". The person on the line said Apple would exchange my hard drive as it is still under warranty but I would lose all my data.

I've spent A LOT of money over the years on iTunes purchases and fear I may have lost everything. I know, I know... my mistake for not backing up my data and purchases.

I was told I could send the hard drive to one of those data retrieval companies but they are very expensive and wonder if iTunes would allow the re-downloading of my purchases on the same computer?

IMac Intel :: Error Code (-50) On Hard Drive - Can't Move Any Files
I attached my hard drives to it yesterday and left for the day. I came back today and one of my drives is acting up. I can't move any files around on the drive (the files are primarily video files), I get this error when I try to do that: The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50). I don't have a good feeling about this so I had to force eject the drive (it wouldn't eject on it's own even though no programs were using it) and I shut it down.

What should I do at this juncture? The drive in question is a G drive Terabyte and it's formatted as Mac OS extended (journaled). Also, whenever I try and make admin changes the password check appears like this. WHY. [URL]

ITunes Mac :: Moving Library To External Hard Drive
I have viewed many YouTube videos on how to do this, and different people give different instructions. The one that made the most sense and that I could actually hear clearly was one by a man from C-Net but his instructions also are quite different from one I read here. I want to move my iTunes music and its related files to my 2-terabyte Seagate external hard drive.

The C-Net guy says to make the moves all from within the iTunes program. He describes going to the iTunes icon, then having the application copy all the songs to the EHD. But others say different things, like "Move the iTunes Library folder to the EHD." That means it's a manual move, and that doesn't sound right from other things I read. In the past I bollixed up my iTunes because, in a fit of organization-itis, I moved songs around and, I guess, I lost them.

IMac Intel :: Swapping Internal Vs External Hard Drive
My iMac G5's logic board is dying. I just bought a refurbished Intel iMac from Apple.com (not the newest version). It has a 250 gig HD which I thought I would swap with a 1 TB drive but I have just discovered that the interior is not as accessible as the G5 and drive swapping needs to be done by a pro. But I would like to do the following set-up culled from the archives instead: "There is operational efficiency to running the OS and apps off a limited size volume, about 160GB to 250GB, and storing user data on a separate drive. My setup is the stock 160GB internal drive which is mostly used for the OS and apps. Most of my user data is on an external drive, so more than 50% is free space on that internal drive. I have a 320GB FireWire (400) drive that holds most of my user data. And I have a 750GB USB 2.0 drive that is my Time Machine archive drive, which backs up the internal drive and FireWire drive." I wold like to do this set-up using the 250 gb iMac drive for the OS and apps and the 1 TB drive as an external for the user data. Here's what I've got -- iMac with 250 gb HD no info on it yet but the OS and apps that come with it. My old system, setting, files etc. are backed up on my 500gb Time Capsule (as well as still on the old iMAc G5 which can turn on but when it goes to sleep it does not come back on without a restart and other issues.) I just bought a 1 TB drive that I thought would go into the iMac but if I use your set-up I will get a case for it and use it externally. How do I get all this stuff configured so I have my apps and OS on the new iMac and the user data on the external? The catch is this -- the old IMac G5 has over 300 gigs of info, apps and OS on it so I cannot put it all on the new iMac and the move it around.

I was wondering if there was any way to remove an external drive without having to hit eject on the computer?

I remember years ago using windows you could set it up so you didnt need to properly eject, as all the writing was done when you asked it to and nothing was done upon eject, so it was possible.

Is there a setting for this, or some kind of trick? Would make things a little easier.
