IMac Intel :: Boot Up Unexpected Power Outage And Repair Options?

My intel imac 7,1 refused to boot up following an unexpected power outage and after trying to repair it using the disk utility and running the hardware check I have come to the conclusion that I must replace the hard drive. Always looking to turn lemons into lemonade, I will use this opportunity to increase the disk size to 1T, max out my RAM and replace the long dead superdrive that eats, but doesn't spit out my disks. My main concern and question is how to restore the new hard drive once it's installed. The old one had a windows xp partition but I think time machine was only backing up the mac side. There was nothing of importance on the windows side so I don't have a problem starting from scratch. Can anyone direct me to a step by step procedure for formatting and partioning the new drive?

IMac Intel :: Power Outage - Dead Computer
I'm new to this forum & plan to stop in more often. We had a brief power outage, it is one of many that happen during the month even in our urban setting. If we can save our precious mac, we are buying the U.P.S. system. Most other times, there's no problem, this time however, the mac will not power up, silence & a black screen - gulp. I've unplugged & replugged everything, I've even taken out the memory cards & replaced them. Nothing. I have half a mind to call the power company & give them an earful, I'm using our 5 yr old iBook G4 for this & I'd rather not have to use this keyboard for long.

IMac Intel :: Some Applications Cause System Freeze After Power Outage
We experienced a power outage today and after I started up my intel iMac my system freezes when trying to open any Adobe CS application. I had been experiencing problems in the past with my old iPod and iTunes, I'm not sure if they are related. When mounting the iPod the clock sometimes freezes. Also, Console freezes when I open it, but it doesn't freeze the system. So far all other applications seem to be working ok. I have repaired permissions several times even from the boot CD, but it doesn't help.

IMac Intel :: Power Outage During Partitioning ... Can't Recover Space?
Last night I was running Boot Camp and was in the process of repartitioning my 250 GB drive (to allow 32 GB for Windows); it was about halfway done when we had a power outage. When the power came on again a few minutes later I restarted the computer and it worked fine...however I have lost about 20 GB of my empty drive space. It is not a partition yet and I am not able to make it one or bring it back to the original configuration.

IMac Intel :: Internal Hard Drive Disappears After Power Outage
since a couple of months I have this strange problem: after a power outage my internal hd becomes unusable. If I start my imac using a clone from an external hd, the internal hd may be either unreadable or it appears as a raw 7.5 GB partition (instead of 160 GB). After a couple of days, I normally reboot my imac, it starts up from the external hard drive and the internal hd is back there with all its data and partitions! This happened at least three times (always after a power outage). I don't know if I have to find a replacement hd or if it may be a problem with my imac's batteries and power supply. When the hard drive is back in action I try to check it with TechTool, Drive Genius etc and all of them report it's working fine (no bad blocks etc)

IMac Intel :: Intel IMac Won't Boot From Disc Or In Safe Mode - Cannot Repair Disk?
I have an early Intel iMac 20" (2GHz core duo) that generally works fine. I recently ran Onyx and it reported a startup disk error, suggesting I insert the install disk, hold 'c', and use disk utility to repair the disk.

NOTE: I have performed this operation successfully in the past and know how to do it.On this occasion, the iMac simply booted up to the normal desktop each time after multiple attempts at booting from both the original OSX 10.4.4 install disc and the OSX 10.5.1 install disc (current os is 10.5.8).

I then attempted to start holding 'shift' to start in safe mode but again, repeated attempts all landed me on my normal desktop.I then attempted to hold 'option' to be given the choice of startup disc but again was ignored and went straight to my normal desktop after multiple attempts.Note that my iMac appears to be running fine otherwise. I was just trying to perform some routine maintenance and have run across this problem.Any ideas? This mac will be 5 years old soon and I would like to keep it running for a while longer.

My wife noted the power had gone out upon seeing the microwave clock. I checked the outlet (her Macbook was plugged into the other receptacle), and there's still power going to my machine.

IMac Intel :: Won't Boot / Repair - Even After Erase And Install
One day my iMac acts weird. Apps bounce but don't open. I restart. I get greyscreen and spinning gear for 1.5 hours. Uh-oh. Disk Utility run from OS X disk: cannot repair - "Invalid Node Structure" and "Invalid Key Length" - multiple instances. So I erase volume and install. All goes fine. Install Tiger. Use upgrade to Leopard disk. Leopard boots and apps work (I try Safari and web connects) so I do software update thinking it's fixed.

Huge software update to 10.5.7 plus sundry others. After update reports "Could not install updates" - then it lists a load of updates (keynote, iwork etc) that it cant install. Say's it'll restart. You guessed it: grey screen and spinning gear for 1.5 hours. Won't boot after forced restart either. Run disk utility from OS X disk again: same errors, "node"; "key length" etc. What now? Is 10.5.7 the problem? I have apple care so no major sweat but I need to get this thing operating baby. PS - my boot camp partition that I have had for months and months still boots. So the HD isn't totally dead. At least can rule that out.

Power Mac G5 :: Repair Permissions And Disk Options?
Using the Apple Disk Utility...

What the difference between running Repair/Verify (Permissions or the Disk itself) on the hard drive or the boot volume listed in the window?

Some say just run it on the boot volume, others say run it on both.

Is there an advantage in doing both (if so, why) or should it be just the boot volume?

IMac Intel :: FireWire Audio Interface Power Options
I just bought a Presonus Firebox, which connects via Firewire 400 to my iMac. I use it to record audio for maybe 30 min per day. The box is powered by the Firewire, but gets a little warm after it's on for a while. But I don't want to keep unplugging the FW cord for fear of eventually wearing out the port. So, is there some external switch that I could use to kill power to the FW? Or perhaps there's some simple app to toggle the FW port on the iMac.

IMac Intel :: Disk Utility Says Harddrive Needs Repair - How To Boot From Original Disk
My iMac has been acting up badly. Finally on Friday, it had trouble turning on and a burning smell arose from the top. Came on but with the blinking folder with question mark. So turned it off and tried again to turn on: no chime and couldn't turn it on.

Went to Genius bar this a.m. Tried different cord. It turned on. Everything came up fine. Genius ran special test. Everything came back with green check. But he said the internal hard drive could very likely be starting to fail.

Back home. Just ran the Disk Utility to "Verify." It couldn't continue verification. Got these messages:

Invalid volume directory count.

Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.

The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Questions:

1) Can I repair using the First Aid utility (or is it more about getting a new HD)?

2) If so, can someone remind me what keys to press on startup to boot from the CD?

3) I have 10.5.8 right now. Can I still boot from the original Tiger installation CD and use that Disk Utility?

IMac Intel :: Unable To Boot From Install Disc - Get Repair Disc Running From DU?
My iMac has been running a little slow the past two days and so I ran Disk Utility. DU reported that I had the incorrect number of thread records and an invalid volume count. It instructed me to repair the disk by booting from the install disc. The problem is that when I try to boot from the install disc (after I choose the disc from the options), I just get a gray screen with the apple logo on it. Nothing else happens, no disc activity, nothing.

Anyone have any ideas as to how to get my iMac to boot from the disc and, ultimately, to get Repair Disc running from DU?

Power Mac G5 :: Hard Drive - Wants To Three Boot Up Options?
I have a pM G5 and two installed internal HD. They are both about 600GB. One I use to Clone my main drive using Carbon Copy Cloner to basically create a back up. On the main drive I use I also have an "edrive" partition created with Techtool Pro.

Question i have is when I boot up holding down the option key I only see my selected start up disk and the edrive and not the second internal HD. It is bootable and I have used it to boot up by selecting it in system prefs and restarting. Basically I'd like to see all three boot up options - my main drive, my back up and my edrive when i hold the option key on start up?

Power Mac G5 :: Boot From Slave Or Master - Performance Options
I have a 1.8 duel G5, 3 gig of ram, and 2 internal hard drives, a 120 gig and an 80 gig. My question: does anyone know if it makes a difference (performance wise) which drive I boot from? The 80 was the original boot drive, but due to space problems, now I boot from the 120. I've run every diagnistic imaginable, including Diskwarrior. I have the identical machine at work, and that one just seems snappier. I maintain both machines the same, cocktail, MacJanitor etc. There is plenty of room on both drives. So the last thing I can think of is the master/slave thing.

Osx 10.6.8 Slow After Power Outage
My 2007 intel imac lost power a while back and has been slow and somewhat erratic since that happened. My area suffered a power interuption that lasted a couple of minutes. When i turned the machine on the next day I used the disk utility to verify the disk and repaired permissions. the disk was fine but there were some permission errors which were repaired. After doing all that I found Finder could no longer search and find files, I could still access a file normaly but I could not search for a specific file or a group of files 9 .dmg for example)Firefox was very slow to fully load (30 seconds), one loaded the internet access was fine - 20 mbs or so. I downloaded the latest version of Firefox but it did no good.I had loaded Enequeue a week before the failure occured and that stopped woking. When i would click on a song in my library it would just hang.console error msg indicated the library had changed.A remote printer that had worked fine before the event was no longer reachable. I can see the printer but I can't print to it and if I try to modify the printer settings in CUPS I have to reload the printer driver on the remote machine (a 27" 2011 Imac) because that computer shows the printer as being paused.

All of this seems like it's either a permissions problem or a corrupt system file. I've done the following ton try and fix it Used Disk utility to verify the diskUse disk utility to repair disk permissionsDone a safe mode startReset all the plists. This older imac  is used mostly to access my music files on the new Imac, I then use the optical audio output to feed an outboard DAC attached to me stereo in the living room. The new imac is backed up daily but this one is not because it really doesn't have any data on it. It seems that i should be able to fix this without reinstalling everything. Both machines are running OSX 10.6.8.Is there anything else i can try or should i just reformat the disk and reinstall OSX?

Software :: EMac Screwy After Power Outage
Yesterday evening there was a little lightening here abouts and the whole town lost power for around seven hours (I do not believe my home was struck, just the utility.) Upon manual restart, the date and time on my eMac had reverted to I think December 1977. Odd, because the PRAM battery is less than a year old, and they generally last me three to five years. Also now, when I start up my eMac, Airport asks me to choose a network to join and then asks me to enter a pass word. The Network Preference remains checked, "Remember any network this computer has joined." What ever could have happened, and how do I fix this?

OS X Leopard :: Mail Crashes Repeatedly After Power Outage?
This evening we had a power outage that shut down my computer without warning (no, no UPS; we're in a temporary rental house, and I didn't bring the UPS, which was probably dumb). Ever since, when I try to start up Mail, it will open, remain open for maybe 10-20 seconds, and then quit unexpectedly. The "safe start" option doesn't fix the problem, nor does moving the preferences files or "unfoldered" items from the ~/Library/Mail folder to the desktop and letting Mail rebuild the mail folders. Can someone suggest a fix?

OS X Leopard :: Lost POP3 Email Accounts After Power Outage
Following a power outage, my seven POP3 email accounts disappeared from Mail together with all emails in those accounts. I can locate them on disk in the library but is there a way I can restore the accounts and the emails back to Mail? I also have a backup of Mail on Time Capsule but I am uncertain of how to do selective restores.

MacBook Pro :: Slow Wireless Internet After Power Outage
I am using a MacBook pro on a home wireless network, and all the rest of the computers (including the primary one the network adapter is connected to) are PC's. The internet was working well on all the systems, until there was a very brief power outage. Immediately following, the wireless was either not working or extremely slow on all of the computers. After some tinkering it now works for all of the PCs, but is very slow for my MacBook, and some sites won't even load. I'm assuming there's a settings problem of some sort, although the Diagnostics in AirPort say it is working fine.

Information:
MacBook Pro
Mac OS X (10.6.4)
2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
