IMac Intel :: White Keyboard Shift Key Stopped Working

I have a white keyboard that came with my iMac G5. Recently the left "Shift" key quit working. Nothing in particular...no water, coffee, food etc., dropped on/in the keyboard. I removed the key and cleaned around it to no avail. Applecare is long since gone, any hope or is it toast?

I bought this machine about November 2008 with only the basic warranty.

IMac Intel :: Aluminum Keyboard Wired - Spacebar Key Stopped Working?
I own 2 of these keyboards, one for work, one for home. The other day the spacebar on my work keyboard slowly ground to a halt... first it stopped working intermittently, and then it got worse and worse until now, I can't use it all. I brought it home and tested it using apple's KB articles, disabling Universal Access options, and testing it with the Keyboard Viewer, as directed. On my home setup, with both identical keyboards connected, the work keyboard continues to not work, while the home keyboard (same exact model) works fine. Same thing if I connect just one or the other-- the work keyboard spacebar key just doesn't work.

IMac Intel :: Keyboard Alt & Shift Key Cannot Switched
alt & shift keys have switched functions but only for the "3" key along the top of the keyboard. Previously shift + 3 gave the pound sterling sign, but this is now alt + 3, which took some finding, shift + 3 is this sign #. I would like the pound sign back at shift + 3 where it's shown.

My Mac works very well but I got a problem, if I want to put any sign such as the interrogation mark or any other that goes with Shift plus number it doesn't work, a random sign comes up, same happens when I try to put accents. I think it might have to do with something related to the keyboard setting but how to fix it.

IMac Intel :: All Of Sudden Keyboard And Mouse Stopped Working?
I was using my iMac Al 20', everything was working fine, and after I did what I had to do, I shut it off, to go to bed, then I remember that I had to pay a bill, and turn it back on, but when it start up I noticed that my mouse wasn't working, I've tried my keyboard and noticed it didn't work also ( don't know about the remote, forgot to try it ).

I pick up my mouse and noticed that it was 'turned off' ( no light below it ), so I've unplugged and plugged it back again, the mouse turned on, but it still didn't move ( the cursor were at the apple on the top ).

IMac Intel :: Apple Wireless Keyboard, F Key Is Not Working?
I just got a new 27" iMac with the wireless keyboard. I'm using this keyboard with my 24" iMac from last year. My problem is that the functions on the "F" keys (the functions represented by drawings) do not match the drawings. For instance, when I press "F12", it calls up the dashboard. The picture on the key indicates it should adjust the volume. Can anyone tell me how to get the functions on the "F" keys to match their pictures? I looked at the keyboard settings in System Preferences, but couldn't find anything there that changed things to the way they are supposed to be. Mac OS X (10.6.4)

OS X :: F-key Keyboard Shortcuts Stopped Working / Restored Default Under Preferences
On my MBP under Snow Leopard, the F-key keyboard shortcuts (e.g. Ctrl-F2 (select menu)) suddenly stopped working. This might have happened after a recent OS-update, I'm not sure. Anyone else have this problem, or a possible solution?

I've already pressed restore default under Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts*, this made no difference.

IMac Intel :: Bluetooth Keyboard Brightness Controls Stopped Working?
I've got a 27" iMac 3.06 GHz with bluetooth aluminum keyboard (2-battery version) and Magic Mouse/Mighty Mouse, depending on whether my fingers are hurting or not. It's running OS 10.6.2, and Win 7 in an 80 GB Boot Camp partition. All Apple updates, including the two 27" iMac video firmware updates and the recent keyboard firmware update, have been applied.

The problem is that the brightness controls on the keyboard do not work when booted into Snow Leopard; they do work when booted into Win 7 (they worked with Boot Camp 3.0 and still work after the BC 3.1 update). The same holds true for a first-gen aluminum keyboard (3-battery version) as well as a USB aluminum keyboard. All keyboards are the "shorty" versions. The brightness controls on all three also do not work when I'm booted into a Snow Leopard "Test" user account with administrator privileges.

When I'm booted into a clone of the iMac's hard drive on an external hard drive, the brightness controls work. That clone is dated Jan. 30. But a second clone on yet another external hard drive, dated Feb. 20, does not let the brightness controls work. Something, obviously, happened between Jan. 30 and Feb. 20. All I can think is that there was a keyboard firmware update for the 2-battery version that I applied in the last week, as well as a second iMac 27" video firmware update earlier this month.

In my attempts to get the brightness controls to work again, and to resolve a problem caused by the recent 27" iMac video firmware update that apparently broke the ability of Win 7 to boot, I wiped the iMac's hard drive and did a clean install of 10.6.1 from the system disk, then installed all Apple updates. I did not import any of my data from Time Machine. The brightness controls were working. I used Migration Assistant to import all of my data, apps, settings, etc. and upon restart the brightness controls no longer worked.

I got exactly the same results when I wiped the hard drive, reinstalled Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and restored all my personal data, etc. using Time Machine during the post-install setup process.

(As an aside, it was a bear to reinstall Win 7, which installed very easily last November before the iMac 27" video firmware updates. Apple issued a special "iMac Late 2009 Win 7 Drivers" (bluetooth and ATI video) folder in late January that has to be placed on a FAT USB thumb drive during the Win 7 install to let people see the final setup screens. When that didn't work for me, I installed an Acer LCD with DVI as a video mirror. Without the Acer, which had video when the iMac didn't, I was able to see what was going on and enter the commands necessary to complete the install. That video update really messed up what was a very smooth dual-boot setup.

I've gone into System Preferences>Language & Text and followed troubleshooting tips here by setting up the Keyboard Viewer: [URL] All this did was to confirm that the keyboard brightness increase and decrease buttons (F1 and F2) did not work -- on all three keyboards. When I changed Keyboard preferences to set all preference keys as standard F1, F2, etc. keys, the keys showed they were working in Keyboard Viewer, but the brightness control window didn't show up on-screen.

I've Googled, Apple Discussioned and otherwise run out of clues and answers. Something obviously got munged and it's probably something like a plist. My suspicion is that the latest iMac 27" firmware update is the culprit, but I find that hard to believe. It would seem the iMac 27" bluetooth keyboard firmware update is the culprit, but that was only applied to that keyboard, not to the other two aluminum keyboards I'm using for tests. Interestingly enough, though, when I boot the iMac from the external clone that does permit the brightness keys to work, Software Update says there's a keyboard firmware update needed, even though it's already been applied (I watched the green light flash, etc. myself.) So perhaps that update is what's behind this problem.

There's no other way to adjust brightness on the iMac, and booting into Win 7 to adjust brightness, then back into Snow Leopard, isn't a, um, bright way to do it.

IMac Intel :: Keys Y, H And N Stopped Working On Wired Aluminum Keyboard?
The "Y" "H" and "N" suddenly stopped working on my wife's wired, aluminum, iMac keyboard which is about 2.5 years old. She typed an e-mail and the keys worked--she then started a Word Doc and the keys would not respond. There were no spills, but it has been very humid here for two months here in Athens GA. The machine is covered by Apple Care which, I think would, replace the keyboard, but is there any home remedy to try before taking to the local Apple store?

IMac Intel :: 24'' White Dead - Motherboard Stopped Working?
I have a 24'' white intel iMac from 2006, and it stopped working. It happened after I replaced the HDD fan (underneath the logic board).I have previously replaced the harddisk with more luck. After I assembled the computer, I powered it up - the indicator light went on and the fans started, but nothing more. I turned it off and tried again - but now nothing happened. I tried resetting the SMC and nothing.I tried holding down the power-button while inserting the powercable, and that makes the fans run at full speed, but no light. Now the fans come on slightly, and the indicator light seems to light at half power (slightly pulsating), but other than that, it is dead. (no light in mouse either)I also tried removing the RAM and reinstalling it.I fear that the board might have some how been damaged during the installation.

IMac Intel :: Aluminum USB Keyboard Stopped Working / Caps Lock Light Stays On
I tried to plug the USB (not wireless) aluminum keyboard that came with my girlfriend's iMac to a KVM switch and since then in stopped to work. Everytime it's plugged, the Caps Lock light stays on and cannot be turned off. I tried to plug it directly on the iMac and on my MacBook, with no result. The keyboard doesn't appear in the System Information's USB devices list.

I tried to install the Keyboard firmware update, but since it's not detected at all it can't be installed.I'm affraid that my KVM Switch gave too much power to the keyboard and "fried" it or something like that, but if somebody have an answer I'll be glad to hear it.

OS X Tiger :: Wireless Keyboard Shift Key Wrong Entries
I have an Apple wireless keyboard which was working fine for the past 10 months, until this morning. Now, when I press the shift key, it types an "I" and whatever other key I hit. Also, there are occasional random capital letters when I type without pressing the shift key. I've tried things like resetting the PRAM, going into keyboard preferences and resetting to the defaults, and unpairing/repairing the keyboard to my iMac. It is definitely the keyboard, as I plugged in the USB keyboard from my daughter's iMac, and that works fine. Also, I've tried to get support, but can't get past Apple telling me my serial number is invalid.

IMac Intel :: Keyboard Keeps Locking When Double Pressing Shift, Control, Command?
I am sure this is an easy answer, but I can't figure it out. Everytime I hit shift or command or option or control, the imac makes a sound and I see an icon on the screen. If I press the key again, it locks that key down, and the icon stays on the screen. I get issues with typing all caps by double hitting the shift key on accident and it's a pain to keep re-hitting it to get out of caps. But this happens for all these keys: Shift, Option, Control, Command.

Intel Mac :: Volume Keys Not Working On Apple 10-key Keyboard?

I asked the folks at my local Apple store both over the phone and in person if the 10-key keyboard (non-wireless) they were going to sell me was compatible with Mac OS X version 10.5.8 (I think I'm Leopard) and they assured me it was. When I hit the volume keys, it initially used the assigned function of the F10, F11, and F12 keys (manipulated the windows and dashboard). I removed those key assignments through system preferences but now the volume keys do absolutely nothing. I tried looking for volume controls through the assignments but couldn't even find them to assign the F10, F11 and F12 keys to them.

i've moved to toronto and i'm wondering it might not be possible for the applestore to give me another keyboard in japanese. they may give me another one in english but i prefer the japanese for convenience.

IMac Intel :: Keyboard Not Recognizing Desired Key
This may not be the right forum to ask this question, but it was the closest I could find, so here goes: I am using an Apple Aluminum Wired Keyboard with my Intel iMac. Recently (last couple of days) two specific key combinations cmd + c and shift+e have stopped working. Basically I cannot type a capital e and I cannot use the keyboard shortcut for copy. When you open the keyboard viewer when typing it recognizes when you are pushing down the shift or command keys but it doesn't recognize that I am pressing the e or c key. My suspicion is that one of the plist files is bad and should be deleted, but I don't know which one it would be. It could be something else entirely too, I just don't know. It seems very unlikely to be a hardware problem since the e and c keys work when one of the modifier keys isn't held down, and all of the other keys work when shift or command are held down (including command + e and shift + c).
