IMac Intel :: Slow After Boot In Safe Mode To Run Disk Utility

After booting up my iMac in Safe Mode to run Disk Utility, then rebooting, my iMac (early 2006, 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, currently running 10.6.2) now runs painfully slow. So slow I can no longer use it without booting in to Safe Mode. Details if they help: Bootup in normal mode now takes 10-15 minutes. During bootup, for about two minutes I now see a grey screen with two checkered vertical lines through it.

After bootup, all menu functions respond typically 15-30 seconds after being chosen, and programs and files take anywhere from 30 seconds to three minutes to open up. Rebooting does nothing. Hard resets do nothing. Unplugging and replugging does nothing. I have the same issue every time. I can still use the machine in Safe Mode, though I lose functionality I need.

MacBook :: It Won't Boot After Trying To Repair With Disk Utility, Cannot Boot In Safe Mode
I have a MacBook 4,1 with Intel Core 2 Duo processor 4GB Ram. It is taking over 10 minutes to boot up past the gray apple screen when I turn it on. First I cleared the PRam (?) then I checked the disk using Disk Utility Verify, and it said the disk needed repairs. So I ran the disk repair and it said it was unable to fix the errors on the HD.

I did a little research and tried booting into the Single User mode, then running /sbin/fsck -fy. It said that it found errors but could not fix them. I ran it two more times as suggested and got the same result each time. I then tried rebooting and now instead of taking 10 minutes to boot up, it takes about 5 minutes on the gray apple screen and then just turns off. I started in Verbose mode to try to troubleshoot the error and it appears the last thing to come across the screen before power down is a message "Apple Yukon 2: RxRingSize <= 1024....etc".

I decided next I would run the Apple Hardware Tester. The test came back with an error code "4SNS/1/40000001:IG0C-0.265". I am very good at searching the web but I could not find any errors that had the IG0C or IGOC or any combination at the end, but plenty of 4SNS/1/40000000(1) errors with different endings. From what I can tell people are saying anything with 4SNS/1/4000000 is a logic board failure, but this computer was literally just booting this morning until I did the /sbin/fsck -fy.

IMac Intel :: Cannot Boot Even From Disk And In Safe Mode
I'm stuck on the grey spiny screen. Here's what happened: I tried to share my Macintosh HD on my network, then, when it was finished, a whole bunch of errors popped up saying that I would have to reinstall. So I restarted, now it chimes and boots to the grey screen and is stuck there. I tried to boot from the CD, but it didn't work, I also tried to use the reinstall disk which didn't work either.

IMac Intel :: Intel IMac Won't Boot From Disc Or In Safe Mode - Cannot Repair Disk?
I have an early Intel iMac 20" (2GHz core duo) that generally works fine. I recently ran Onyx and it reported a startup disk error, suggesting I insert the install disk, hold 'c', and use disk utility to repair the disk.

NOTE: I have performed this operation successfully in the past and know how to do it.On this occasion, the iMac simply booted up to the normal desktop each time after multiple attempts at booting from both the original OSX 10.4.4 install disc and the OSX 10.5.1 install disc (current os is 10.5.8).

I then attempted to start holding 'shift' to start in safe mode but again, repeated attempts all landed me on my normal desktop.I then attempted to hold 'option' to be given the choice of startup disc but again was ignored and went straight to my normal desktop after multiple attempts.Note that my iMac appears to be running fine otherwise. I was just trying to perform some routine maintenance and have run across this problem.Any ideas? This mac will be 5 years old soon and I would like to keep it running for a while longer.

OS X Tiger :: Intel IMac Cannot Boot Into Safe Mode
I cannot boot into safe mode. I ran onxy, all appeared ok. I booted from installer DVD,- repaired the drive, - nothing wrong with the drive and repaired disk permissions, twice, as a few permissions were incorrect. The only app which automatically logs in user account is KeyCue and has done so always and I don't know what what it belongs to. Nothing logs in automatically in the admin account. I intermittently have a problem with DVDs not mounting, and a safe boot fixes the problem.

IMac Intel :: Disk Utility Says Harddrive Needs Repair - How To Boot From Original Disk
My iMac has been acting up badly. Finally on Friday, it had trouble turning on and a burning smell arose from the top. Came on but with the blinking folder with question mark. So turned it off and tried again to turn on: no chime and couldn't turn it on.

Went to Genius bar this a.m. Tried different cord. It turned on. Everything came up fine. Genius ran special test. Everything came back with green check. But he said the internal hard drive could very likely be starting to fail.

Back home. Just ran the Disk Utility to "Verify." It couldn't continue verification. Got these messages:

Invalid volume directory count.

Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.

The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Questions:

1) Can I repair using the First Aid utility (or is it more about getting a new HD)?

2) If so, can someone remind me what keys to press on startup to boot from the CD?

3) I have 10.5.8 right now. Can I still boot from the original Tiger installation CD and use that Disk Utility?

Software :: Won't Boot Into Safe Mode Or From The Osx Disk?
In an attempt to fix a sibling error showing in disk utility, following online help using fsck, my iMac will no longer boot. It just gets stuck on the grey screen with the circle constantly spinning. It won't boot into safe mode or from the osx disk. It will boot into verbose and fsck mode though.

When I try to boot from disk by holding c it just constantly restarts. I have nothing on my computer that I don't mind losing and I have tried everything on the apple support.

IMac PPC :: It Will Not Boot Out Of Safe Boot Mode
I have a Imac PPC with a 2Ghz processor and 1GB of Ram.  I am running leopard 10.5.8.  Recently i woke the PC from sleep mode to find a blue screen with only the cursor working.  Using the internet, I determined how to get the PC booted in safe mode.  I have used all the disk utilities at my disposal along with onyx and cocktail to try and fix what I believe is a startup problem. I hae booted the PC in single user mode and tried the fskc codes, which i believe is just the same as the disk utility. Based on my computer all permissions are correct and there is nothing wrong with the HD.  The PC still will not boot normally.  I have even done an archive and re-install of Leopard.

IMac Intel :: System Running Very Slow / Fatal Hardware Error Reported To Disk Utility
I usually run Final Draft, iTunes, and have my Firefox browser open while writing which has been fine in the past. Recently my computer has been running very slow so I decided to re-install OS X. After doing so the computer runs like new, but after installing Final Draft again I tried to repair the disk permissions and received the message, "this drive has reported a fatal hardware error to Disk Utility." I ran the extended Apple hardware test and no errors were reported.

Should I be worried? Are there any other tests I can run to ensure my hard drive is okay? Please bear in mind I'm not the most Mac savvy.Has anyone else had to pay for a hard drive repair through Apple out of warranty, and if so what was the damage?

PowerPC :: G4 Will Not Boot After Using Target Disk Mode Connected Intel IMac?
We have some new Intel iMacs and have transferred some information from our previous G4 PM (one MDD and one Quicksilver) to the new iMacs. For some reason the G4's will now not boot up and kernal panic on the gray Apple boot screen. This has happened to all the G4's we have in our office. They are running OSX 10.2.8 and the iMacs are running OSX 10.4.4. We can still mount the drives from the G4's using FireWire Target Disk mode.

I have tried zapping the PRAM etc but they still wont boot. I have also tried running the OSX 10.2 Installer disks to try and reinstall OSX on the G4's but the installer cannot see the drives?

I tried running the disk utility. It finds the hard drive but wont let me verify/repair permissions (the option is grayed out). It will only let me verify/repair the disk, but it finds no errors. The installer cannot find the disk at all.

We have more than one hard drive in the G4's and the target disk mode will only mount the system drive, it doesnt see the others, so we cannot retrieve out information. Whats going on. Never had this problem before.

Anyone have any idea what is wrong. Never had this problem before using the FireWire transfer.

OS X :: Won't Work With Kernal Panic / No Safe Mode And Target Disk Mode
I have a 15" mbp with 10.6 Intel core duo, 4gb ram with a boot camp and ubuntu partition through parallels. The other day I was installing xcode from apple's website, which failed 3 times after downloading saying the package couldn't be expanded. I left my computer for a while and came back where i then had to log in again. it rejected my password numerous time (i'm positive it was correct). when i restarted my computer i got a kernal panic screen when the apple logo came up. it told me to restart the computer which i did. didn't work. i restarted with the osx cd to use the disk utility. when it checked the drive it found a bunch of errors, which i then tried to correct. it went for a couple minutes then told me they couldn't be fixed and i should try to back up my data and reinstall osx. i don't know how to back up my hard drive when i can't log into my account. i've tried to boot in target disk mode and copy some files that way, but the only disk the other computer sees is my windows partition- no mac partition.

i've also tried these, none of these have worked: restarting in safe mode resetting the ram and pram booting with different sticks of ram all result in a kernal panic.

my windows partition still works fine though (as much as i hate to say it) the only things I really care about on my computer are my files from school and my itunes library. is there any way i can get these files off my computer?

IMac Intel :: Booting Or Loading Into Safe Mode
I have a 20" Intel IMAC (non-aluminum). A few months back, a DVD became stuck in the slot loading drive and after many attempts, I have been unable to eject the disc. I just continued using the computer without removing the disc. I've noticed over the past few weeks, the DVD drive makes a lot of loud noises while booting up. Now today, When I boot, I get the screen with the apple logo and spinning circle for awhile and hear lots of strange sounds from the DVD drive and eventually the computer restarts and it keeps going through that cycle. I dried booting in Safe Mode, and it gives me a disk error 3 or 4 times before restarting. It never brings me to a command prompt. I'm not sure if the disk error is referring to the DVD drive or the Hard Drive. So without the DVD drive, I can't run the Apple Hardware Test, without loading into safe mode, I can't run "applejack". What can I do to boot this computer up ?

IMac Intel :: Freezes Normally - Works Perfectly In Safe Mode
I have a iMac with 10.5.8 installed. We have had it since 2007. The issue we are having is that when in the normal boot mode the graphics become 'torn' and 'stretched', horizontal colored lines appear and certain pixels turn pink or blue. After being on for a couple of minutes the computer will freeze. However the computer is not completely frozen, I can still move the cursor, music keeps playing(until the end of the song) and I can adjust the volume with the keyboard but it is very delayed. If I put the computer into safe mode it works perfectly, there is no graphic issues or freezing. Here is some information from system profiler.

IMac Intel :: Verify/Repair Disk Corruption - Disk Utility On OS X CD Not Working?
I have an Intel-based iMac that was running on Leopard until a few days ago. My sister-in-law gave me her Snow Leopard upgrade disc, which I ran and successfully upgraded the machine to Snow Leopard.

Over the past few days I have noticed the machine running quite slow, so I ran Disk Utility-->Verify Disk, to which it said the drive was corrupted and needed the utility to run from the OS X disc. I don't have the original iMac discs, and the disc I used to upgrade the machine is no longer in my possession. I tried the OS X disc that came with my MBP, but it didn't work (being from a different machine).

Short of getting the upgrade disc back, any other ideas on how I can run the disc utility or get another set of original discs?

Power Mac G5 :: Cannot Boot Normally But Only In Safe Mode
My PowerMac G5 (dual 2GHz rev.A, Mac OS 10.5.1) has begun to seize working. Today it froze with a black screen. After a restart the OS launched though the gray Apple, the spinning wheel, and up to the blue screen, and then went black, and froze. All the time. So I tried to reinstall the OS using the 10.5 DVD; the same thing happens. The installer/OS cannot launch beyond the gray Apple/spinning wheel screen.

Now; I have run the (extended) Apple Hardware test, and there are no error reports. I can install Mac OS 10.2.7 and Mac OS 10.3 without any problem. However, after I installed 10.4 I could no longer boot from it. Nor could I later boot from the 10.4 CD. I can boot from the machine in safe mode, but not normally. I can still not boot from the 10.5 DVD.

Possibly, there is something that is launched in normal mode that is broken, and when it is turned off (in safe mode), allows the mac to start up. What could it be ? I have unplugged the airport card, I have unplugged all devices, except the built-in bluetooth card and the screen. Last week (I only use my computer on weekends), I had a problem with the same computer, where is went stuck on a blue screen on startup. I though it was the Airport card, but it seems that that is not the case.
