I have an Imac about 18 months old. Occasionaly the screen just goes blank and black and then comes back on again. Is this just a hardware failure or is there something else happening that I should should know about?

I have an brand new iMac i3 and have linked it into an old ACER v223w 22" display for a dual screen solution via mini dviThe issue I have is 2 fold1) There is a ghosting of text on the dual screen almost like a water ripple effect2) The monitor works at all resolutions but not at the highest approved 1680 x 1050 - the display works (with ghosting as above) but there horizontal justification is way off left of screen and there is a big black band down the right hand side.

IMac Intel :: 24" Aluminum IMac Will Not Boot - Have Black Screen
Long time Mac user with my first Intel Mac. Machine is a 24" Aluminum iMac refurb with a mid-2007 production date. I purchased the machine approx one year ago and am just now having issues with it. Should be noted that I installed 4GB of OWC RAM December of last year.

Computer will not start up at all - no start up GONG, and no gray screen. About a week ago I started having problems w/freezing on wake from sleep. A restart, PRAM zap, unplug power cables, ect. would resolve the issue. Sometimes it would wake just fine, other times it would require a hard shut down via the power button and then a restart.

I was able to initially boot from the restore disk and run the expedited hardware test, which gave the computer (and memory) a clean bill of health. It was after this that I noticed the screen would flicker and go to black. Subsequent restarts would give me nothing more than the black screen.

I could hear the disk spin up in the superdrive, but after a few seconds it would spin down and go completely silent. I was able to get the disk ejected, though, with the folded paper trick. So now, the drive doesn't even spin at all. All I hear is that initial 'wirr' sound, then complete silence.

I'm under AppleCare for another two years, and it's looking like I'm going to have to take the machine in for service. So, my question (finally)...is there any way to recover data on the HD currently in the iMac? I've been able to boot to TDM once but, like an idiot, didn't have enough external drive space to do a complete back up (yeah, I know).

Unfortunately I can't seem to boot back into TDM now that I've picked up my randy new drive. Currently, my plan is to reset the SMC (or is it the PMU??) by letting it sit overnight with everything unplugged and pray that I can get it to boot tomorrow. Shorter unplugged sessions don't do a thing.

IMac Intel :: 24in Aluminum Imac Screen Freezes And Turns White Or Black
Recently, my 24in intel imac screen went black. I had to hold down the power button to turn it off. My computer turns on and loads the desktop fine but whenever I start to launch applications, the screen freezes and turns white or black.

I've done the full hardware check and gone over it with an apple expert over the phone.

He couldnt find any problems so he suggested I bring it to the apple store. The apple store expert thinks it could be a problem with the logic board, graphics card, or memory. They are keeping it for 3-5 days.

IMac Intel :: Spare Parts / Screen Goes Black
Anybody know a trustable source of getting spare parts of iMac in Europe? (better in Spain, but the UK will be fine)

A couple of days ago my iMac just died. The screen turned off but i could hear the iMac running. I restarted in safe mode to check if that could be a Software problem and the it lasted on for a couple of minutes and it turned off completely. It never turned on again.

I talked to the repair service and they said the most common cause could be

1 - The Internal Power Source (around 200 euros of repair cost)
2 - The Inverter (around 500 euros of repair cost)

For a 3 years old iMac, paying 500 euros y NOT an option. I am a bit **** out about the reliability of Mac now.

Anyhow, i have to resolve the problem or use it as a fairly big paper holder. I might buy the piece and ask a friend of mine who is an electronic engineer to help me out. I checked the iFix guides and also parts in the US and the cost of the Power Source or Inverter in never more than 100 euros.

By the way, by reading on the Internet about this turn off monitor problem most of the people say the the usual causes are the Display Power Source or the Inverter, but it could be that the memory went bad too.

Software :: Black Screen Leopard 10.5.2 Intel IMac
Middle of last month I bought a 20" IMac. Everything was fine up until about 1 week ago when the screen went black. I clicked on the mouse button several times only to have a password box pop-up. After filling in the response, all was fine.

Next, same scenario but the password box didn't appear any more. The only way to get the screen back was by a forced restart.

I turned off the screen saver, set the 2 controls in energy server to off, unchecked the box at the bottom left & put "auto login" to to on the Accounts window.

Problem continued.

Next move was to zap the pram, this was 2 days ago. The screen didn't go black but often asked for my pw. It's now back to its beginning phase which is a forced restart !!

I was told that it was due to Leopard 10.5.2 & am considering going back to 10.5.1

IMac Intel :: System Powered On But Screen Remains Black
Having sort of a major problem with my Intel IMac. It's a late 06 17 inch White intel core 2, 2ghz, 2gig RAM. I was using it like normal the other night, shut down like normal, next morning when I start it up....it makes the BONG noise but the screen remains black, power LED is glowing, can hear CD drive spinning and fan...no other sounds. Nothing I can find in the apple trouble shooting articles to this point.

Here is what I have tried so far:
Boot from system CD holding C key
Running apple hardware test by pressing D on startup
Resetting PRAM
Took RAM out left everything unplugged overnight reinstalled new ram next day, Which should have reset the SMC

Doesn't seem to respond to any keyboard inputs...I made a firmware restore CD but now I can't get my system CD out of the mac. I even tried using the open firmware commands using command option O F...nothing. So now my system CD is also stuck in the drive. I thought the keyboard might be the problem but it works fine when plugged into my laptop. I found an article on apple's site saying if the LED light is on but screen remains blank it is a: POST or BootROM failure.

It sounds like the computer is running just no screen on even after resetting PRAM. I tried just holding down option key upon start up and get a small cursor on the screen with nothing else. I have about 150gb of free HD space on the computer, so its no too crowded, it just wont start up properly. First my emac the other day now my IMac seems to be gone.

IMac Intel :: Screen Intermittently Start Flickering And Go Black
I got my 21.5 " iMac 3 months ago and just started having my first problems with the display over the past few days. It will intermittently start flickering (black) and then will eventually go completely black. Is this what was happening with the 27" displays? I called tech support a few days ago, but the 'genius' acted as though he had never heard of such a problem with the displays. I'm making an appointment to take it in to the store, but was wondering if others with a 21.5" have had the same problem and have been successful in fixing it?

IMac Intel :: Display Flickers And Turns Black The Screen?
Basically what i've noticed so far is the display flickers and turns black at lower brightness settings while gaming. (Primarily WoW). I did a quick google search and pulled a TON of old forums dating back to last nov 2009 (when we got ours) to feb and even may 2010. We have had problems with the display before. We had to take our comp in to get it looked at for screen tearing. They decided to replace the logic board, and when we got it back it made a funny brushing noise when on ( they guessed it was the optical drive).

IMac Intel :: 7,1 Takes Several Attempts To Start - Black Screen Some Noise
Some days back it wouldn't completely wake up from sleep, that is the fan was spinning but the screen remained black. A manual restart solved the issue.

Since then it has become more and more difficult to start up the iMac. Usually, I press the button, the fan starts and, I believe, so does the HD, there is that chiming noise and that was it. On the screen nothing happens, it remains as black as it is when it's off. And the Mac definitely does not boot since there is nothing more to hear and after some time the fan stops.

Multiple retries have the same result, but after 6 to 10 attempts the screen would come up and with it the iMac boots up. When it's running there have never been any issues whatsoever.

IMac Intel :: Start Up Noise And Fan Running But The Screen Is Totally Black?
My Mac is the most treasured thing I own and has always worked perfectly since I bought it approx. 2 years ago.

Recently I went on a business trip to America from the UK. I left the clock on my mac set to the time in America so my partner could check the time difference.

When I arrived home last night with some trepidation he told me it was broken.

Well it's not broken it just has no light in the screen.

When you turn it on, you hear the start up noise and fan running but the screen is totally black.

However when you shine a light on the screen you can barely but just be able to see the icons on the screen as it should look.

Its as if there is no light in it, but I have no idea how this just happened.

He used his own laptop for the 2 weeks I was away and assures me he did nothing, that he looked on the time and put back to sleep and then the next time he went to check it, the screen never 'woke up'.

I really needed to use the computer to upload all my photos taken on the recent business trip as well as to finish the artwork for the business. I only have a few weeks and I'm very worried that I will have to send this off to apple and won't be able to do my work.

The back light on the power button also does not seem to be working. No flashing no nothing.

When i bought the mac it had a tiny sort of smudge in the top left corner, like a patch of white smoke was trapped in the glass. I have no idea if this is relevant, but now that it is black, the patch seems to look bigger and more obvious than ever. I just wish I'd had the sense to mention it at the time, I did have apple care package but only for a year, which is now run out.

IMac Intel :: At Start Up No Chime, Black Screen No Options On G5 17" 1.83 Ghz?
this morning my imac failed to boot up, the dreaded gray screen with the perpetual spinning gear. i shut it down, restarted and reset the pram. it booted up, i logged in and within seconds i got the multi-language dialogue to restart the computer. i did so, and after a gray screen spinning gear hang i once again got the restart dialogue. i did so again while inserting my snow leopard install dvd and pressed the option key, selected the install disk (via tab) to once again get the dialogue after several minutes of reading the dvd. restart again holding the "c" key to get the same result. i then unplugged everything, held the start button in for 5 seconds, replugged the power cord and the keyboard only to get the same result. i then unplugged again, extracted the memory chips and reinstalled them, started up again (each time hearing the chime loud and strong) holding the option key again, only the selections available were EFI boot (instead of macintosh hd) or install disk i selected the latter, and after a longer period of time hearing the combo drive scan the dvd i get again the same result. i then attempted a start up in safe mode while pressing the shift, command and v keys (again hearing the chime) viewing all the text during the boot, only i can't recall the final line before nothing but a long series of "v"s after the text. i then let go of the keys i was pressing and saw everything on the screen turn into a garbled mess of unreadable characters before the screen went black.

I just had the hard drive replaced in February so I hope it's not that. just wanted to clarify that when I restart, I get the chime but the screen stays black- I don't get to the grey screen.
