Hardware :: Open DNS With AEBS Router?
Dec 3, 2009
Just read about Google's new Public DNS. Can use use this or Open DNS with the AEBS router? I did some searches and it seems people have had problems in the past with Open DNS and the AEBS. Would be interested in any comments before I try to play with this.

I've tried searching, but can anyone point me in the directions of how to set up and Airport Extreme (old) and an DI-524 (D-link) b/g router. I obviously am looking to turn my old AEBS into dual band. The two routers will be connected via Ethernet cable.

I have a Power Mac G4 dual 876Mhz MDD ,recently bought. I am trying to connect to the internet and am having no problem when I connect an ethernet cable to a netgear Wireless router that shares the connection. However as I have an airport express base station, would it be possible to connect the airport express base station to the powermac via ethernet and then connect to the internet wirelessly via the netgear router and airport express base station?

I'm sure there is a few people on here that have made the swap - is it worth it? Is the difference in speed noticible to warrant an upgrade.
My current setup:
2.4 MBPu
Mac Mini (coming soon)
Dell Inspiron
Canon Printer
Touch
Slingbox (hardwired to AEBS)
AE (old school version)
WD 1TB external (connected to AEBS via usb)
All currently connected to a AEBS wireless.

I currently keep my iTunes library on an external drive, connected to my Airport Extreme. I also have another drive attached to the AEBS that I would like to back my iTunes library to.
Can this be done? I've got the full version of Super Duper which will let me back up local drives to any network drive but I can't seem to get it to back to to a network drive to a network drive.

I just recently got Verizon Fios internet. I am having a problem with making the router they supplied my default router.I am not trying to piggy back or connect additional routers. I just want to use the Fios router.Prior to Fios, I had Time Warner and i used my own router and as soon as I opened up my macbook, it would immediately find that router as my default. Now, with Fios, when i open my "Airport" icon at the top on my screen, it NEVER choses my Fios router as my default, making me change to it every time i want to use my internet after opening up my computer.

model number: GT704-WG
And i have a Wireless Router from Netgear is there any way i can make both the modem and router to work together using Netgears router because the one verizon sent me always loses connection and i just dont like how it operates. I had my old modem working perfectly with the Net gear router but i guess since this has a built in Router it automatically makes it use it

Upstairs I have my AT&T provided router's wireless turned off and have plugged my Airport Extreme into the ethernet in DMZ mode. Wireless works fine in the house.Downstairs my Xbox 360's ethernet cable is plugged into my AT&T provided set-top box (receiver/DVR) and internet works fine on that. I cannot stream my media (using 360 Connect) from my mac to my xbox since they are on different networks, although using the same U-verse connection. When checking the AT&T router's system summary page I can see that there is an IP assigned to the xbox.

I just built a PC that actually works. However, I was really cheap and didn't wanna buy a wireless access card, thinking I could connect to an extra router and use this router to connect to my other router that's network enabled. Is this possible, and if so, how would I go about doing it? I tried googling it, but I dunno what this is called.

I have a Linksys Wireless Router and a Linksys Modem, the router is 6 years old or so 802.11b, how much faster would the Internet be if I had a combined Linksys wireless router/modem versus the 802.11b that I have now?
Would I see a huge difference? I am running my Macbook off it and an olde Toshiba laptop.

What I'm trying to do is set up the apple tvs to be connected to a router that is not connected to the internet, which we'll call Router B.The Mac Mini has all the movies and TV Shows on the iTunes account is hardlined into another router that is connected to the internet, which we'll call Router A.Is it possible to have the Mac Mini hardlined into Router A (to have an internet connection) and simultaneously connected wirelessly to Router B (so the AppleTVs can pull from the Mac Mini iTunes.)?Or vice versa, hardlined into Router B (non internet connection) and Wireless to Router A (internet connection).
Info:
Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

I'm thinking about getting a Airport Extreme Base Station, and have a few questions.
1) Are the Ethernet ports 10/100/1000 ?
2) Can I setup MAC based access with WEP or WPA security?
3) Does it support uPnP ?
4) Can I setup IP reservations for my other devices? iPhones, Laptops, Servers, etc..
5) Does it support Port Forwarding?
6) Can I plug in a External Drive and use it as a Time Machine backup device?

So I've recently setup my AEBS(non dual) for N only and network utility shows it's about twice as fast(I haven't really done any tests or know how though). However now my iPhone can't access it. Now I've got a AE that I use strictly for wireless audio(I live in a one bedroom setup so no need to extend), is there a way to set that up as a G network somehow for my iPhone, and in case friends come by with non N laptops? If it helps any, the AEBS is not that far from the AE if wiring is an option.
Right now I have AEBS+MiniStack(hdd)+printer, and AE+iPod HiFi. I'd like my MacBook to be able to run off the AEBS and access my ministack, but at the same time transmit audio to my HiFi. Then I'd like my iPhone and older laptops to access my AE. I don't mind a mess of wires on the other side of my room, I just don't want anything with me on the couch but the power cord.

If you can't fit your media on the small SSDs do you access it wirelessly using the above? Do you lose your snappyness of the MBA if your wirelessly accessing your pictures, movies, mp3s through iphoto, VLC n iTunes?
Any negatives to this when in home network, know the obvious issue of when away and some solutions for that, with the caveats over access over internet.
I was planning on setting up 2 iphoto n iTunes albums one locally n one on the wireles attached HDD and using just favourites locally when away from the home.
Assuming this must be a common issue for all the new small capacity SSD owners coming from larger HDDs like me.

Hi. Looking for some advice on whether to purchase an Airport Express or an AEBS for bridging Wireless-N in my apartment.
Currently I run a Mac Pro via gigabit ethernet to a D-Link DGL-4300 wireless-G router. My Powerbook is wireless-G and connects wirelessly. I also have an ipod Touch which is obviously G. I just recently purchased an AppleTV to get some HD and iTunes streaming in the bedroom, so the AppleTV is not located near the D-Link where I could connect it via ethernet.
So I need Wireless-N in order to stream content to the AppleTV. I also need to maintain a wireless-G network for both the Powerbook and the iPod Touch.
I was considering buying a new router that did simultaneous G and N but it would be an awful waste of what's otherwise a great existing G router.
So my question is, should I get an Airport Express and run it in Bridge mode to provide wireless-N connectivity to the AppleTV and any other follow-on N products I may purchase, or should I go with the AEBS which would come with a USB port for an external hard drive?

I have an AEBS and have to make some changes to use the Air Video app for my iPhone.
I have to switched it to Bridged Mode and also set up Port forwarding on my comcast router (SMC 8014) to get Air Video to work over the internet.
The missing piece is I need to know the WAN address of my AEBS. How do I find this out?

Every evening (almost) I loose my internet connection. Thought it was my provider, but hooked up with a cable and the connection is fine.
I do have a WD 1T USB drive attached for TM backups of my wifes MB, so Im thinking it has to have something to do with this set up.

I currently have one router (AEBS) distributing service to over 5 machines at times. Considering buying a new router, and was wondering if this will improve the speed of the internet (also going to upgrade to 50 MB service). I wouldn't have it connected to a computer though, rather kept in my bedroom plugged in. Is this possible or does a router have to be connected to a computer at all times to distribute wifi signal? I understand setting it up initially with a computer, but does it need at all times to work?
